Requested moves is a process for requesting the retitling (moving) of an article, template, or project page on Wikipedia. For retitling files, categories and other items, see When not to use this page.
Please read the article titling policy and the guideline regarding primary topics before moving a page or requesting a page move.
Any autoconfirmed user can use the Move function to perform most moves (see Help:How to move a page). If you have no reason to expect a dispute concerning a move, be bold and move the page. However, it may not always be possible or desirable to do this:
- Technical reasons may prevent a move; for example, a page may already exist at the target title and require deletion, or the page may be protected from moves. See: § Requesting technical moves.
- Requests to revert recent, undiscussed, controversial moves may be made at WP:RM/TR. If the new name has not become the stable title, the undiscussed move will be reverted. If the new name has become the stable title, a requested move will be needed to determine the article's proper location.
- A title may be disputed, and discussion may be necessary to reach consensus: see § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves. The requested moves process is not mandatory, and sometimes an informal discussion at the article's talk page can help reach consensus.
- Unregistered and new (not yet autoconfirmed) users are unable to move pages.
Requests are generally processed after seven days. If consensus is reached at or after this time, a reviewer will enact the request. If not, the request may be re-listed to allow more time for consensus to develop, or the discussion closed as "no consensus". See Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions for more details on the process.
Wikipedia:Move review can be used to contest the outcome of a move request as long as all steps are followed. If a discussion on the closer's talk page does not resolve an issue, then a move review will evaluate the close of the move discussion to determine whether or not the contested close was reasonable and consistent with the spirit and intent of common practice, policies, and guidelines.
When not to use this page
Separate processes exist for moving certain types of pages, and for changes other than page moves:
- Making an uncontroversial move – if you can, be bold and do it yourself! If you can't, see § Requesting technical moves.
- Renaming a category – propose the move at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
- Renaming a stub template – propose the move at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
- Renaming an image or other file – see Wikipedia:Moving a page § Moving a file page.
- Moves from draft namespace or user space to article space – Unconfirmed users: add
{{subst:submit}}
to the top of the article. See Wikipedia:Articles for creation. Confirmed users: Move the page yourself. - Merging two articles – make a request at Wikipedia:Proposed mergers, or be bold and do it yourself.
- Splitting an article – make a request at Wikipedia:Proposed article splits, or be bold and do it yourself.
- Requesting that page histories be merged – list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge.
- Contesting a move request close – use the Wikipedia:Move review process.
Undiscussed moves
Autoconfirmed editors may move a page without discussion if all of the following apply:
- No article exists at the new target title;
- There has been no discussion (especially no recent discussion) about the title of the page that expressed any objection to a new title; and
- It seems unlikely that anyone would reasonably disagree with the move.
If you disagree with such a move, and the new title has not been in place for a long time, you may revert the move. If you cannot revert the move for technical reasons, then you may request a technical move.
Move wars are disruptive, so if you make a bold move and it is reverted, do not make the move again. Instead, follow the procedures laid out in § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves.
If you are unable to complete a move for technical reasons, you can request technical help below. This is the correct page if you tried to move a page, but you got an error message saying something like "You do not have permission to move this page, for the following reasons:..." or "The/This page could not be moved, for the following reason:..."
- To list a technical request: the Uncontroversial technical requests subsection and insert the following code at the bottom of the list, filling in pages and reason:
This will automatically insert a bullet and include your signature. Please do not edit the article's talk page.{{subst:RMassist|current page title|new title|reason=reason for move}}
- If you object to a proposal listed in the uncontroversial technical requests section, please move the request to the Contested technical requests section, append a note on the request elaborating on why, and sign with ~~~~. Consider pinging the requester to let them know about the objection.
- If your technical request is contested, or if a contested request is left untouched without reply, create a requested move on the article talk and remove the request from the section here. The fastest and easiest way is to click the "discuss" button at the request, save the talk page, and remove the entry on this page.

- Theatre World Award → Theatre World Awards (currently a redirect to Theatre World Award) (move · ) – keeping naming convention with other awards ceremony articles — Paper Luigi T • C 05:37, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
- I believe the plural awards apply via WP:PLURAL as distinct entities considered together when there are multiple categories to the awards. This particular award seems to be a single award given to multiple honorees in a given year, so singular might be better. (Most awards actually resided at the WP:SINGULAR until a couple years ago, and were moved with a formal RM.) -2pou (talk) 23:11, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
- List of engagements during the 2023 Israel–Hamas war → List of engagements during the Israel–Hamas war (move · ) – Event continued into 2024, so removing “2023” is needed. The Weather Event Writer (Talk Page) 22:00, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
- Not uncontroversial. An RM is currently already open for the name of the article about the war, and the subject matter has been officially identified as contentious (and the requester has a history of disputed editing). — BarrelProof (talk) 04:10, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
- Chief technology officer → Chief technical officer (currently a redirect to Chief technology officer) (move · ) – more companies use "chief technical officer" and most people are more familiar with that term. Mechanical Keyboarder (talk) 09:50, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Mechanical Keyboarder: there was a RM in 2010 which resulted in the existing setup, Talk:Chief_technology_officer/Archives/2011#Move?, making this request a potentially controversial one. Do open a full discussion instead. Thank you. – robertsky (talk) 11:33, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- Class A (baseball) → Single-A (currently a redirect to Class A (baseball)) (move · ) – This is the name used since 2022. See [1] 162 etc. (talk) 04:47, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- @162 etc.: Given there was a series of moves and reversions in 2021 (though not to this name), I would tend to think this would be potentially controversial and need an RM. E.g., Oknazevad said in 2021 that "Class A" was the most common name in sources (when reverting a move to apparently then-official Class Low-A). Also, this edit to the article was not a minor edit. The discussion process is used for potentially controversial moves. A move is potentially controversial if either of the following applies:
- there has been any past debate about the best title for the page;
- someone could reasonably disagree with the move.
Use this process if there is any reason to believe a move would be contested. For technical move requests, such as to correct obvious typographical errors, see Requesting technical moves. The technical moves procedure can also be used for uncontroversial moves when the requested title is occupied by an existing article.
Do not create a new move request when one is already open on the same talk page. Instead, consider contributing to the open discussion if you would like to propose another alternative. Multiple closed move requests may be on the same page, but each should have a unique section heading.
Do not create a move request to rename one or more redirects. Redirects cannot be used as current titles in requested moves.
Requesting a single page move
To request a single page move, click on the "New section" (or "Add topic") tab of the talk page of the article you want moved, without adding a new subject/header, inserting this code:
{{subst:requested move|New name|reason=Place here your rationale for the proposed page name change, ideally referring to applicable naming convention policies and guidelines, and providing evidence in support where appropriate. If your reasoning includes search engine results, please prioritize searches limited to reliable sources (e.g. books, news, scholarly papers) over other web results. You don't need to add your signature at the end, as this template will do so automatically.}}
Replace New name
with the requested new name of the page (or with a simple question mark, if you want more than one possible new name to be considered). The template will automatically create the heading "Requested move 4 January 2024" and sign the post for you.
There is no need to edit the article in question. Once the above code is added to the Talk page, a bot will automatically add the following notification at the top of the affected page:
Unlike other request processes on Wikipedia, such as Requests for comment, nominations need not be neutral. Make your point as best you can; use evidence (such as Google Ngrams and pageview statistics) and refer to applicable policies and guidelines, especially our article titling policy and the guideline on disambiguation and primary topics.
WikiProjects may subscribe to Article alerts to receive RM notifications. For example, Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Article alerts/Requested moves is transcluded to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Biography. RMCD bot notifies many of the other Wikiprojects listed on the talk page of the article to be moved to invite project members to participate in the RM discussion. Requesters should feel free to notify any other Wikiproject or noticeboard that might be interested in the move request, as long as this notification is neutral.
Single page move on a different talk page
Occasionally, a move request must be made on a talk page other than the talk page of the page to be moved. For example, a request to rename Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Resources to Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Reviewing and templates would need to take place at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Articles for creation because the talk page of the project page to be moved, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Articles for creation/Resources, is a redirect to that centralized discussion page. In this type of case, the requested move should be made using the following code:
{{subst:requested move|reason=(the reason for the page move goes here).|current1=(present title of page to be renamed)|new1=(proposed title of page)}}
The |1=
unnamed parameter is not used. The |current1=
and |new1=
parameters are used similar to multiple page moves described below.
Requesting multiple page moves
A single template may be used to request multiple related moves. On one of the talk pages of the affected pages, create a request and format it as below. A sample request for three page moves is shown here (for two page moves, omit the lines for current3 and new3). For four page moves, add lines for current4 and new4, and so on. There is no technical limit on the number of multiple move requests, but before requesting very large multi-moves, consider whether a naming convention should be changed first. Discuss that change on the talk page for the naming convention, e.g., Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (sportspeople).
To request a multiple page move, edit at the bottom of the talk page of the article you chose for your request, without adding a new header, inserting this code:
{{subst:requested move
| current1 = Current title of page 1
| new1 = New title for page 1 with the talk page hosting this discussion
| current2 = Current title of page 2
| new2 = New title for page 2
| current3 = Current title of page 3
| new3 = New title for page 3
| reason = Place here your rationale for the proposed page name change, ideally referring to applicable naming convention policies and guidelines, and providing evidence in support where appropriate. If your reasoning includes search engine results, please prioritize searches limited to reliable sources (e.g. books, news, scholarly papers) over other web results. You don't need to add your signature at the end, as this template will do so automatically.
}}
For example, to propose moving the articles Wikipedia
and Wiki
, put this template on Talk:Wikipedia
, and replace current2
with Wiki
. The discussion for all affected articles is held on the talk page of the article at page 1 (Talk:Wikipedia
). Do not sign a request with ~~~~
as the template does this automatically. Do not skip pairs of numbers.
RMCD bot automatically places a notice section on the talk page of the additional pages that are included in your request, advising that the move discussion is in progress, where it is, and that all discussion for all pages included in the request should take place at that one location.
Occasionally the discussions for significant multi-move requests may be hosted on WikiProject talk pages or other pages in Project namespace. For multi-move discussions hosted on a page which is not itself proposed to be moved, specify |current1=Current title of page 1
for the first page to move.
Request all associated moves explicitly
Please list every move that you wish to have made in your request. For example, if you wish to move Cricket (disambiguation) to Cricket because you do not believe the sport is the primary topic for the search term "Cricket", then you actually want to move two pages, both Cricket (disambiguation) and Cricket. Thus you must list proposed titles for each page affected by your request. For example, you might propose:
If a new title is not proposed for the sport, it is more difficult to achieve consensus for a new title for that article. A move request that does not show what to do with the material at its proposed target, such as:
is incomplete. Such requests may be completed as a request to decide the best new title by discussion.
- Cricket → ?
If a disambiguation page is in the way of a move, the request may be completed as proposing to add (disambiguation).

Commenting on a requested move
All editors are welcome to contribute to the discussion regarding a requested page move. There are a number of standards that Wikipedians should practice in such discussions:
- When editors recommend a course of action, they write Support or Oppose in bold text, which is done by surrounding the word with three single quotes on each side, e.g.
'''Support'''
. - Comments or recommendations are added on a new bulleted line (that is, starting with *) and signed by adding
~~~~
to the end. Responses to another editor are threaded and indented using multiple bullets. - The article itself should be reviewed before any recommendation is made; do not base recommendations solely on the information supplied by other editors. It may also help to look at the article's edit history. However, please read the earlier comments and recommendations, as well as prior move requests. They may contain relevant arguments and useful information.
- Vested interests in the article should be disclosed per Wikipedia:Conflict of interest § How to disclose a COI.
When participating, please consider the following:
- Editors should make themselves familiar with the article titling policy at Wikipedia:Article titles.
- Other important guidelines that set forth community norms for article titles include Wikipedia:Disambiguation, specific naming conventions, and the manual of style.
- The debate is not a vote; please do not make recommendations that are not sustained by arguments.
- Explain how the proposed article title meets or contravenes policy and guidelines rather than merely stating that it does so.
- Nomination already implies that the nominator supports the name change, and nominators should refrain from repeating this recommendation on a separate bulleted line.[a]
- Do not make conflicting recommendations. If you change your mind, use strike-through to retract your previous statement by enclosing it between <s> and </s> after the bullets, and de-bold the struck words, as in "•
SupportOppose".
Please remember that reasonable editors will sometimes disagree, but that arguments based in policy, guidelines, and evidence have more weight than unsupported statements. When an editor offers an argument that does not explain how the move request is consistent with policies and guidelines, a reminder to engage in constructive, on-topic discussion may be useful. On the other hand, a pattern of responding to requests with groundless opinion, proof by assertion, and ignoring content guidelines may become disruptive. If a pattern of disruptive behavior persists after efforts are made to correct the situation through dialogue, please consider using a dispute resolution process.
Closing a requested move
Any uninvolved editor in good standing may close a move request. Please read the closing instructions for information on how to close a move request. The Simple guide to closing RM discussions details how to actually close a requested move discussion.
Relisting a requested move
Relisting a discussion moves the request out of the backlog up to the current day in order to encourage further input. The decision to relist a discussion is best left to uninvolved experienced editors upon considering, but declining, to close the discussion. In general, discussions should not be relisted more than once before properly closing.[b] Users relisting a debate which has already been relisted, or relisting a debate with a substantial discussion, should write a short explanation on why they did not consider the debate sufficient to close. While there is no consensus forbidding participation in a requested move discussion after relisting it, many editors consider it an inadvisable form of supervote. If you want to relist a discussion and then participate in it, be prepared to explain why you think it was appropriate.
Relisting should be done using {{subst:RM relist}}
, which automatically includes the relister's signature, and which must be placed at the very end of the initial request after the move requester's signature (and subsequent relisters' signatures).
When a relisted discussion reaches a resolution, it may be closed at any time according to the closing instructions; there is no required length of time to wait before closing a relisted discussion.
If discussion has become stale, or it seems that discussion would benefit from more input of editors versed in the subject area, consider more widely publicizing the discussion, such as by notifying WikiProjects of the discussion using the template {{RM notification}}. Banners placed at the top of the talk page hosting the move request can often be used to identify WikiProjects suitable for notification.
Notes
- ^ A nominator making a procedural nomination with which they may not agree is free to add a bulleted line explaining their actual position. Additional detail, such as sources, may also be provided in an additional bullet point if its inclusion in the nomination statement would make the statement unwieldy. Please remember that the entire nomination statement is transcluded into the list on this page.
- ^ Despite this, discussions are occasionally relisted more than once.
- This section lists all requests filed or identified as potentially controversial which are currently under discussion.
This list is also available in a page-link-first format and in table format. 95 discussions have been relisted.
- (Discuss) – AEG (disambiguation) → AEG – I think that there's no primary topic for this intialism. Either Anschutz Entertainment Group or Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go are likely the primary topics because both have a high number of page views. per WP:NOPRIMARY and the German AEG is common on Google or Bing, although I want to base it on pageviews. An alternative for AEG would be AEG (Germany), AEG (electricity company)/(electric) or AEG AG.GabrielPenn4223 (talk) 23:42, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – History of the Balkans → History of Southeastern Europe – I do not see the clear scope of the article, and being titled as "History of the Balkans" neither the poor definition in the very short lead as "The Balkans and parts of this area are alternatively situated in Southeastern, Southern, Eastern Europe and Central Europe. The distinct identity and fragmentation of the Balkans owes much to its common and often turbulent history regarding centuries of Ottoman conquest and to its very mountainous geography.[1][2]". As first, the term "Balkans" is ill-defined and controversial confusing term which is steadily being replaced by more accurate and acceptable term Southeast Europe/Southeastern Europe hence on Wikipedia we should not promote the term Balkans more than needed. As second, there's no distinct identity, fragmentation is part of a much wider political and sociological context studied by Balkan studies/Balkanology (which is mostly popular in Eastern Balkans and also called as South-East European Studies). As third, current article is heavily overlapping with Prehistory of Southeastern Europe hence with additional medieval and modern history this article is literally "History of Southeastern Europe". Perhaps in the current article something about the idea of the Balkans etc. can be added in the modern history sections (and lead as "The history of Southeastern Europe, or the Balkans, ...", but the whole scope and title should not mention the Balkans per se. As fourth, there is no article History of West Europe, History of Central Europe (just a redirect to Central Europe), History of East Europe, History of South Europe etc., so it is confusing there's one for Southeastern Europe and even more named as the "Balkans". - (Discuss) – Slavic migrations to the Balkans → Slavic migrations to Southeastern Europe – Move and merge of history, talk pages etc. of the articles. The term Balkans is ill-defined and controversial because of which is steadily being replaced by more accurate and acceptable term Southeastern Europe. The term Southeastern Europe can be commonly found in scientific literature and else for the specific topic and context. The other Slavic migrations are to/from Central or Eastern Europe - not some vague term like the Balkans. Slavs are linguistically etc. divided into East, West and South Slavs - not Balkan Slavs. Generally and terminologically is more simple and concise to have the same style neither there's need to promote furthermore the term Balkans more than needed in primary meaning instead of Southeastern Europe for Southeastern part of Europe. This, of course, is reflected in the WP:CONCISE and WP:PRECISE policy. That is not at all the case for these gold rush articles. See ngram results: [7][8][9][10] - in some cases gold rush has an outright lead, while in others the Gold Rush variant leads but it is close enough that the "significant majority" mark is not met. — Amakuru (talk) 14:51, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Pre-Columbian Belize → Archaeology of Belize – Mainly for consistency with each other. "Pre-Columbian X" is the most common formulation, but I think by now it's widely accepted that classifying Indigenous history with reference to the arrival of the man who began their genocide is... less than ideal. Pre-Hispanic, pre-contact, etc. suffer from the same problem. "Indigenous history of..." would be one alternative. However I prefer "archaeology of" because that is what the vast majority of these articles actually cover (as opposed to oral histories, mythology, etc.) and it has the benefit of consistency with similar articles on countries outside of the Americas (see archaeology by country). – Joe (talk) 10:32, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
If further disambiguation is needed, because there is more than one sculpture of the same person with an article, then disambiguation by location rather than the sculptor is usually better. This may be done as either "Statue of Fred Foo (Chicago)" (typically preferred for North America) or "Statue of Fred Foo, Glasgow" (typically preferred elsewhere). If the sculpture has a distinct common name, like the Bronze Horseman, that should be used." I should note, Statue of Shakira currently redirects to Cultural impact of Shakira. There are other statues of Shakira but we do not need to disambiguate until a similarly-named entry is created for another notable statue. --Another Believer (Talk) 02:08, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
While "investigation" seems appropriate for the Timeline of the Bad Newz Kennels dog fighting investigation article, the title of this article should reflect the unambiguous results of that investigation - a ring was uncovered. When an investigation yields an unambiguous result, I can't see why the title of the article would say "investigation" instead of what that result was. When George Floyd's death was investigated and rules to be a murder, the resultant article title was "Murder of George Floyd," not "George Floyd death investigation." - (Discuss) – Frederick IX of Denmark → Frederik IX of Denmark – - I know it was discussed above a couple of years ago, but I really find arguments for using the spelling with c (German spelling), as opposed to his actual name without c (Danish spelling) basically absent. A little web search indicates that Britannica and some other sources do use the German spelling, but the German Wikipedia uses the Danish spelling, and many sources in English do the same - including news outlets writing about the abdication of his daughter, Margrethe II, announced on New Year's eve 2023. In the absence of a concensus in English language sources for the German spelling, I see no reason to propagate any other spelling than the correct "native" one. Going back to his predecessor, Gorm the Old (reigned approx. 936-958), English wikipedia uses the English name, rather than the Danish Gorm den Gamle. Obviously, that makes sense. The same may be true for e.g, Frederik I (r. 1523-33), spelled with c in English wikipedia, and there may be no clear line for when to switch away from the German spelling, which seems to have some traditional basis in English sources, to the Danish one. Going far back, spellings were variable. I would think we might spell Frederik VIII (r. 1906-12) in Danish, but spell Frederik VII (r. 1848-63) according to English tradition - but clearly, it is also (or primarily) a question of which spellings are generally found in modern sources in English. One source (but clearly not authoritative in this respect) is the English language webpage of the Danish Royal Court, www.kongehuset.dk/en. They use Danish names for all regents since Christian I (r. 1448-81), including Frederik I (where spellings may be said to differ), but English ones prior to that - where most kings had bynames that are naturally translated into English (except for Valdemar Atterdag (r. 1340-75), where it seems his byname is traditionally not translated). - (Discuss) – Ciampino–G. B. Pastine International Airport → Rome–Ciampino International Airport – Currently, we're inconsistent in naming airports in Italy. Most of them have the city name with a designation if necessary to distinguish, or at least start with the city name then the airport's name. For example: Milan Malpensa Airport, Alghero–Fertilia Airport, Bolzano Airport, Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport, Abruzzo Airport, etc. despite all technically having different official names. Changing the names would align them with what the airports are generally referred to in reliable sources we reference. For example, in the case of Rome, see even the airport's official website which refers to Rome Fiumicino and Rome Ciampino. The difference in search interest between da Vinci Airport and Rome Fiumicino is also overwhelming on Google Trends (not perfect but the margin in Italy is dramatic). That's not to mention that "Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport" is clunky (if we want to keep da Vinci, shouldn't it be Rome-Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci", "Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci" or "Rome Leonardo da Vinci"? However, I think the best solution, for both consistency with other Italian airports and common usage reasons, all of these airports should be renamed. Avgeekamfot (talk) 21:16, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
Bottom line, the vast majority of English-language RS not only call it by its Soviet official name, but they also primarily cover its extensive history in the Soviet Union rather than a few years in the 90s when it was a holdover organization inherited by Ukraine and soon dissolved and reorganized as happened to many other Soviet-era formations in their successor states. Looking at page views from the last two years, it seems that the song (and its associated album) on the same order of magnitude page views as the film, and that the song and album combined (both from The Ventures) outperforms the film. - (Discuss) – Mars Inc. → Mars, Incorporated – This is a request to overturn the previous RM that was closed several weeks ago, per this discussion. WP:NCCORP explicitly states:
If the legal status is used to disambiguate, it should be included in the article title using the company's own preference for either the abbreviated or unabbreviated form. Likewise, whether or not to include a comma prior to the legal status should be governed by company usage.
Contrary to popular belief, WP:COMMONNAME is not the only criterion we consider when deciding an article's name; WP:NATURAL states that when the most common name of a subject is ambiguous (emphasis added):Using an alternative name that the subject is also commonly called in English reliable sources, albeit not as commonly as the preferred-but-ambiguous title, is sometimes preferred. However, do not use obscure or made-up names.
By definition, natural disambiguation disregards the most common name, so in the case of proper names, we fall back to the official name. For titles of works, we use the subtitle even if it commonly omitted in sources; for companies, we use the official legal suffix. "Mars Inc.", however, is a made-up name using a made-up legal suffix (directly contravening NATURAL) masquerading as the company's official name. We can make things up if it's a common noun or descriptor, but we're now asserting that "Inc." (note the capitalization) is part of the company's name, which is false. There is no such company called "Mars Inc.", or "Mars, Inc.", or "Mars Incorporated". MOS:TM instructs us to modify trademarks that are stylized in a way that breaches our MoS; corporate legal suffixes do not, and none of our PAGs give editors free rein to arbitrarily modify a trademarked name without reason. WP:CONCISE discusses truncating excessively long names, not altering punctuation and inventing abbreviations. InfiniteNexus (talk) 19:41, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Ab urbe condita (Livy) → History of Rome (Livy) – It's been several years since this was last discussed, and while there were one or two attempts to discuss the best title since then, they didn't really resolve the issue. Although the current title is widely used, I couldn't find any evidence that Livy ever called his history Ab Urbe Condita. Yes, it's a history of Rome from the founding of the city, but "From the Founding of the City" doesn't seem to be part of the title—not even a subtitle (Historia Romae ab Urbe Condita would make sense, but there's no evidence that it was Livy's title, and while that might strike people as a practical alternative, it's a bit wordy and translates easily). There is some suggestion that Livy called his history Annales, but that title isn't widely used to refer to Livy today. "History of Rome" seems to be the best alternative, since it describes the topic and is widely used as a title; it would need disambiguation, but so does the current title. It's certainly no less correct than Ab Urbe Condita, and unlike that, it doesn't give readers the false impression that it's what Livy called his work. P Aculeius (talk) 19:00, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
If further disambiguation is needed, because there is more than one sculpture of the same person with an article, then disambiguation by location rather than the sculptor is usually better. This may be done as either "Statue of Fred Foo (Chicago)" (typically preferred for North America) or "Statue of Fred Foo, Glasgow" (typically preferred elsewhere). If the sculpture has a distinct common name, like the Bronze Horseman, that should be used." --Another Believer (Talk) 16:05, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – General Land Office → United States General Land Office – Per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, WP:PRECISE, WP:NATURAL. The federal General Land Office was the agency that surveyed and then transferred title to formerly Native American lands in the American west while the Texas General Land Office continues to control most public land in Texas and manages a multi-billion dollar college fund. It's not so much that there isn't a primary topic as there are two for different contexts: if you open a history book and it refers to the GLO, it's going to be this agency that lasted until 1946. But if you're interested in contemporary politics, the Texas agency will be the primary topic: a Google search of "General Land Office" excluding Wikipedia pages had 8 out of 10 for the state agency and, obviously, 10 out of 10 for news articles. The proposed rename was the formal title and serves as a natural disambiguation. - RevelationDirect (talk) 15:21, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Azerbaijani-Mongolian cultural relations → Mongolian–Turkic cultural relations – In the AFD there seemed to be a least a somewhat of a consensus that this article is in need of drastic changes, including the removal of "Azerbaijani", which is WP:OR and historical revisionism/negationism as explained in the thread. Both the current article name and the suggested one are essentially Wiki names, I've not seen this being the actual title of a subject, which is what this article is making it out to be, but it's a start I guess. - (Discuss) – Holocaust victims → Victims of Nazi Germany – As per the discussion at "Definition and scope," the definition of the Holocaust in the very first line of this article contradicts that of the article for The Holocaust. Whether or not the millions of non-Jewish people, such as gay men, the disabled, Romani etc. should be considered Holocaust victims is a point of contention even if there is broad historical consensus that they are people murdered by Nazi Germany. We do not need to identify the other groups as "Holocaust victims" as that is an academic debate in itself, nor excise their inclusion in the article if we just rename the article and make it clear that the Holocaust is mostly specifically used for the destruction of Jews. - (Discuss) – Politics of the Republic of China → Politics of Taiwan – Per WP:COMMONNAME, this should not be a controversial move, but due to the move history, seeking comments and consensus to move here. Taiwan is the main article for which this article covers politics. The common name consensus specific to Taiwan-related topics was thoroughly discussed and established through Talk:Taiwan/Archive 20#Final closing statement. This article covers modern topics as well as both Taiwanese history pre-ROC and early ROC on mainland China - the same is true for Taiwan. For what it's worth, this convention is applied to Politics of China (not named Politics of the People's Republic of China), so the move would be appropriate for consistency. - (Discuss) – Pākehā settlers → European settlers in New Zealand – Per WP:COMMONNAME, WP:RECOGNIZABILITY, WP:COMMONALITY, and WP:CONSISTENT. First, elsewhere on Wikipedia we don't use Pākehā to refer to Europeans New Zealanders, we use European New Zealanders. As such, the proposed title is more consistent with our usage elsewhere. Second, readers from outside New Zealand will not recognize Pākehā; in accordance with WP:COMMONALITY and WP:RECOGNIZABILITY, and with the general principle of making Wikipedia accessible to all readers, we should use a term that is widely used in New Zealand, and is recognizable to the broader body of readers; European settlers in New Zealand, rather than Pākehā settlers. Third, the proposed title is the clear WP:COMMONNAME. This can be seen by reviewing Scholarly results since 2021: #191 sources use "Pākehā settlers" #3310 use "European settlers" in relation to New Zealand Not all results are relevant, but a manual review tells us that enough are to make the COMMONNAME obvious. Finally, MOS:TIES is overridden here by MOS:COMMONALITY, as "European settlers" is widely used in New Zealand English, as can be seen by these Google News results from the past year limited to New Zealand domains: #47 sources use "Pākehā settlers". #239 sources use "European settlers" in relation to New Zealand. Of the results for "Pākehā settlers", most are relevant, although some also use "European settlers". Of the results for "European settlers" in relation to New Zealand most are also relevant; a lower ratio than for "Pākehā settlers", but enough to establish the common name. Some true positives are excluded by the requirement that they must mention "New Zealand", which was included to limit the number of false positives, such as New Zealand sources discussing European settlers in Australia. Results that also use "Pākehā settlers" were excluded. This can be further seen by Google Trends, which shows that New Zealanders prefer to use "European settlers", and almost never use "Pākehā settlers". This doesn't only establish that the conditions for MOS:COMMONALITY to apply are met, but that the conditions for MOS:TIES to apply are not met; in New Zealand English, the most common way of referring to these people is "European settlers", not "Pākehā settlers". - (Discuss) – Equestrian at the Summer Olympics → Equestrian events at the Summer Olympics – In ordinary English usage, equestrian is either an adjective or, when used as a noun, means a rider and not events, sports, or equestrianism. See Cambridge, OED, Collins, Merriam-Webster, dictionary.com. Some editors may be accustomed to equestrian as a noun other than 'person who rides horses'; others find equestrian in the current titles ungrammatical. But in either case, "equestrian events" is universally natural and common to English speakers of all backgrounds. (Previously discussed in a 2022 RfC, with no formal closure: "equestrian events" acceptable to the largest number of editors; consensus against "equestrianism"; "equestrian sports" also possible.) - (Discuss) – AEW → AEW (disambiguation) – I think it's a ripe time to reconsider the issue of redirecting. It was perhaps a little premature to have a redirect in May 2019, before they had even produced a single match, but now they've carved out their niche as a solid second place (like Pepsi to Coke), we can reappraise things. From recent clickstream data, about 97% of traffic to this page immediately clicks on the wrestling promotion. It's clearly what's on everyone's mind when they type "AEW" into the search bar. Furthermore, monthly pageviews immediately jumped up by an order of magnitude in January 2019 (when they opened up shop) and have stayed around there ever since, with noticeable spikes in May 2019 (first event), August and September 2021 (CM Punk's debut in AEW/return to wrestling), and August this year (Wembley show); more granular analysis (see this year) shows the peaks in page views coincide almost exactly with PPV dates (March 6, May 29, June 26, August 27 and 28, September 4, October 2, and November 19). Hence, it's pretty clear from the pageview and clickstream data that the primary topic is the wrestling promotion, and the the page at AEW should be a redirect with a disambiguation hatnote provided at All Elite Wrestling; even if it wasn't the primary topic by some metric, the principle of least astonishment should apply and lead to the same conclusion. - (Discuss) – New Zealand national rugby union team → All Blacks – All Blacks is by far the WP:COMMONNAME, and I personally did not understand just by looking at the title that this article was referring to the All Blacks. Looking on Google Scholar, "All Blacks" has 7,180 results whereas "New Zealand national rugby union team" has 39. This article was moved from All Blacks in 2008, which I disagree with the reasoning for. For one, it cites consistency with other articles which is an argument to avoid, and there is no sports naming convention which gives precedence to the current name. Another point in that discussion was that non-New Zealand countries refer to it as "New Zealand" rather than "All Blacks", but it appears to me that media headlines refer to it as "All Blacks", eg here, here, here, and here, so it shouldn't cause confusion to readers. —Panamitsu (talk) 10:19, 21 December 2023 (UTC) — Relisting. As for the diacritic, subject was an American, born in Nevada, whose name was not rendered with a diacritic, as confirmed by his album covers and entries at AllMusic and Apple Music. Since Ralph Pena currently redirects to the two-man Ralph Peña disambiguation page, the dab page can be deleted and a hatnote atop Ralph Pena can point to Ralph B. Peña, who was born in Manila and does use a diacritic, while a hatnote atop Ralph B. Peña can likewise point to Ralph Pena. A nomination which resulted in the move of Ralph Peña → Ralph B. - (Discuss) – Physical therapy → Physiotherapy – I have come to see that time changes things and believe the profession's choice should be respected. The World Confederation for Physical Therapy (note it is now a redirect) has even changed its name to World Physiotherapy because of confusion over terminology and the number of people using the terms. Here are some links that discuss the title change: * New brand and website for global physiotherapy body * WCPT to Change Name The two major reasons for change are # brand confusion # "The majority of our member organisations use physiotherapy and physiotherapist to describe the profession and the people who work in the profession."[29] Those are good enough reasons for me to support a move from Physical Therapy to Physiotherapy. There are two name change discussions in the archives: * Geographic scope: Title change * Support "Physical Therapy" as the title of the article. I am a retired PT, and under my previous username of Fyslee, I supported keeping "Physical Therapy" as the title. I have changed my mind. The profession's choice should be respected. While a search for the two terms in English will show that "Physical Therapy" is used more in English than "Physiotherapy" (Americentrism at play in searches!), we need to ask ourselves whether we want to document reality ("The majority of our member organisations use physiotherapy and physiotherapist to describe the profession") or just use of the word in English? English is not the sum total of reality. America's dominance in this area is apparent, as other English-speaking countries use Physiotherapy, and there are far more of them than there are Americans. This is an example where we need to assign proper due weight by reducing Americentrism. Many languages use various forms of Physiotherapy that do not show in an English search. Fysioterapi won't show, and that's Scandinavia. Fisioterapia is Spanish. Many languages do this, and none of them will show up in an English search. - (Discuss) – Shake It Off → Shake It Off (Taylor Swift song) – In 2023, the pageviews of Shake It Off and the redirect Shake It Off (Taylor Swift song) compared to Shake It Off (Mariah Carey song) and Shake It off (disambiguation) were at a ratio of less than 10:1. This is not enough to establish that there is a primary topic in my opinion. In fact, in January 2023, there were a couple days when Shake It Off (Mariah Carey song} received 50% of the pageviews of Shake It Off despite being released a decade earlier and Swift approaching the height of her fame. The 2016 move discussion was flawed as it was largely based on the Swift song's higher RIAA certifications, but this neglects the fact that in 2005 the music industry was far different than 2015 and digital downloads were just starting up. Shake It Off (Mariah Carey song) was at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks in 2005; for all we know, if it was released in the digital/streaming era like Swift's, Carey's song would be certified diamond too. The singles charts/industry, at least in the US, were almost 100% based on radio airplay, so Carey's song is inevitably going to have lower certifications. Shake It Off (disambiguation) should be the primary landing page as there is no primary topic. Shake It Off does not meet WP:PT1 based on pageviews nor WP:PT2 because its notability is not substantially greater. It might be some amount more notable, but I don't think it is so substantial as to be the primary topic. Heartfox (talk) 23:41, 28 December 2023 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Anglican Diocese of Manchester → Diocese of Manchester (United Kingdom) – The article's current name disambiguates it from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Manchester, which is located in New Hampshire, USA. My concern is that the current title implies that there is a Roman Catholic diocese of Manchester in the UK, when in reality the diocese of Salford covers the city. Disambiguating by location rather than Christian denomination makes it clearer that only one UK diocese is named after Manchester. I've opted for 'Manchester (United Kingdom)' over 'Manchester, United Kingdom' as although the name of the diocese includes 'Manchester' it's an organisation rather than a place name. - (Discuss) – 2020 City of Melbourne election → 2020 Melbourne City Council election – Like all other election pages, the general style of an election page name is YEAR/Place/election type (following a wide discussion a few years ago), eg 2007 Australian federal election instead of Australian federal election, 2007. This should apply on this page and ones listed below. Having "Melbourne" instead of "City" as the word after the year is more accurate to the above style and arguably looks better visually. I propose the following moves: Additionally, it's worth mentioning that this proposed style is used by the respective state electoral commissioners - putting the LGA name first instead of the description of City, Shire, etc VEC: https://www.vec.vic.gov.au/results/council-election-results/2020-council-election-results NSWEC: https://registers.elections.nsw.gov.au/s/registers-of-groups-of-candidates (scroll down and select "local government elections" then "council area") Totallynotarandomalt69 (talk) 02:48, 7 December 2023 (UTC) — Relisting. Also note that Frwiki has the DAB page at the base name so its unlikely that in English there is a primary topic and Plwiki has the city at the base name. In terms of usage its clear that the name isn't primary and while the name may be primary by long-term significance the city is a state capital so also has long-term significance especially in an encyclopedia. I have not attempted an extensive survey, but most similar articles appear to use "-inch" and "-caliber" (e.g. see the list at 12"/50 caliber gun). These are using quote marks (not the proper symbol for an inch) and not using hyphenation of "caliber" (or are missing "caliber" altogether). Maybe the first one of these should use "Mark 1" instead of "field". — BarrelProof (talk) 18:17, 28 December 2023 (UTC)
I don't think there is a clear primary topic for "Birchwood". This one has 1,201 views but the village in Wisconsin has 285 views, the Tennessee one has 131, the Lincoln one has 56, the New Zealand one has 25, the Wisconsin town has 15, the Alaska one has 6, the Arlington, Virginia one has 3 and the Kewaunee County, Wisconsin one has 2. Birch has 16,964, Selwyn Birchwood has 332 and Birchwood Village, Minnesota has 51. In terms of long-term significance the tree probably has more even though its claim on "Birchwood" is far less. - (Discuss) – List of transgender political office-holders → List of LGBT political office-holders – There is a discrepancy in the article title. While there are intersex people who are born trans, transgenderism, intersexuality, non-binary genders, and agenderism are very different things. * Transgender people are people whose birth sex does not align with the gender they were born with. * Intersex people are people who are born with one or male gonads and/or genitals, and one or more female gonads and/or genitals. * Non-binary people are people who are born with one or more genders that are neither man nor woman. * Agender people are people who are born without any gender. Thus, I propose that this article should be renamed to List of LGBT political office-holders, since its purpose is to include all LGBTQ+ politicians. — CrafterNova [ TALK ] [ CONT ] 10:33, 17 December 2023 (UTC) — Relisting. - (Discuss) – 'Amina → Amina bint Wahb – First off, we need a move because no initial hamza (the ' in 'Amina) should be written per WP:MOSAR.I'm not entirely sure, but I believe that the prophet's mother is not the wp:primary topic for Amina, i.e., I believe that it is not more likely to be the topic sought after when typing "Amina" than all other possible topics combined, since there are a lot of notable Aminas listed at Amina (given name). This includes both people named Āmina (long a, short i; like the prophet's mother) and people named Amīna (short a, long i), which both need to be spelled "Amina" per WP:MOSAR's basic transcription rules.If 'Amina is moved to Amina bint Wahb, Amina should be a disambiguation page with the content currently on Amina (given name).If someone believes that the prophet's mother is the primary topic for Amina, I'm fine too with simply moving 'Amina to Amina. ☿ Apaugasma (talk ☉) 19:03, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
