The Writer's Barnstar | ||
For expanding the Stan Lopata article, which deserved a good expansion, and for the rest of your baseball related expansions I give you the writer's barnstar.Orsoni (talk) 09:54, 6 November 2010 (UTC) |
I too share your goal of expanding articles of lesser known players, especially catchers, who if they didn't hit, toiled in relative anonimity, like Jim Hegan. Can I ask how do you find your most excellent newspaper references?Orsoni (talk) 04:38, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
GA nominations
I have yours and Orsoni talk page watchlisted for a while now, I could place the article though a GA nomination it's not that hard to fix the suggestions. A FAC is hellish but I passed Ben Paschal and Bob Meusel through it so it's a positive sign. Place it in GA I could give it some feedback (as a major baseball expert), and I could get one of the sports copyeditors to give a look though it, like User:Sarastro1 he's the best, with that help you could try FAC, also go though paperofrecord.com, with the Sporting News archives. Thanks Secret account 17:21, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hello. Thank you for your interest in the possible promotion of some of the articles I have expanded to good article status. I was a B- average student in English throughout my schooldays, so I know they still need a bit of work to fix up. I'm having to deal with a chronic pain illness this week that was amplified by a stomach bug that sent me to the ER, but in the next week or so I'd be more than happy to collaborate with more experienced editors in improving Stan Lopata and Hobie Landrith to a high quality level that these two subjects deserve. I've already scoured through the back archives of The Sporting News for rare information included in the two articles and cited them accordingly. I am 70% done with a third article, located at User:Vodello/Don Demeter.
- I won't be able to be of much help this week, but next week I should be able to help with the process of potentially promoting at least one article. Thanks! Vodello (talk) 01:00, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
- I'm already started to copyedit Landrith, this is FA class material, better than most of the GAs on baseball biographies. Secret account 01:26, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for the improvements you've made to Hobie Landrith. Your experience has proven very valuable in making the article look much more appealing, especially with the addition of readily available images. I wish I could find a free image of the player, but could not find one in Baseball Digest or anywhere else. The article is FA-class potential? I feel like I'd be lucky to have an aritcle promoted just to GA status. I would love to have the article featured on the front page of Wikipedia. It would not be for my sake, but for Hobie Landrith's sake. Sure, having a little copper star or green plus mark on my user page would look nice, but I don't know if my article contributions are worthy of such a rare status of FA as only 26 articles out of 38,250 WP:BASEBALL articles carry the distinction.
- Landrith is only the 5th article I've expanded on Wikipedia. My prose is presumably average at best. I'm not sure what the procedures are on getting an article to featured status. I'm currently busy working on a job from home, and I do not know how much work I would need to do in order to meet all the criteria of what is worthy of being a featured article. I am clearly a WP:RS nut, but it would not be fun if I had to go through and edit 60 or 70 of Hobie's 120 sources because I left a necessary field empty like URL or something like that.
- I still want to finish User:Vodello/Don Demeter soon, which may end up being longer than Hobie Landrith.
- Would attempting to promote Stan Lopata to GA take considerably less time? At a quick glance, his personal life section I left oddly incomplete. I want to make these articles so complete that someone reading the article in the year 2110 or 2210 will come away knowing just about everything there is to know about the player. GA or FA status should hopefully server as a confirmation that I have completed my task for that particular article.
- Thank you again for your help. Each and every one of these baseball players deserve only the best treatment for their articles, and you are certainly doing a great job to help permanently preserve the memory of these men. Vodello (talk) 08:44, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
- Wow, I wrote a lot last night at 2:40 AM. I'm trying to take a miniature wikibreak until Tuesday to finish an important project for my IRL job Monday night. Starting Tuesday I will ask for help to promote whichever article you think we should go for first, whether it be GA status for Stan Lopata or FA status for Hobie Landrith. If Hobie does indeed get to FA status, I think User:Vodello/Don Demeter can get there as well. I have documented the forgotten player's very eventful career from his high school days to all of his minor league stops and have currently gotten only to May 5, 1963. Reading the last paragraph I wrote, I also sometimes wonder if I do not 100% properly adhere to WP:NPOV.
- On May 5, Don was involved in a dramatic play to end the game against the Houston Colt .45's. Phillies pinch hitter Wayne Graham hit a ground ball back toward Houston pitcher Hal Woodeshick, who threw the ball back to catcher John Bateman. Demeter attempted to run towards home plate from third base and collided with Bateman, knocking the ball loose and scoring the final run in a 6-5 win.[1]

- I just wonder if the word 'dramatic' is acceptable to use in this scenario. Home plate collisions to occur on a regular basis, but it very rare when it is a game-winning walk-off event. To this day people still remember Pete Rose steamrolling Ray Fosse in the 1970 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. I try to be careful and adhere to WP:NPOV, but the WP:BASEBALL copyeditors should keep an eye out for my slipups nonetheless.

- Thank you for your support. I am glad there is at least one administrator and/or bureaucrat out there that actually has respect for the project and its procedures. I'll still be waiting for whatever bogus forthcoming block down the road as I'm sure this will not be the last time I will be forced to respond to an admin making a mockery of the project. I've certainly been threatened for far less when questioning an administrator that takes his/her position far more lightly than Pedro has and treats every day on the project like a new episode of Days of our Lives. Thank you for being bold in this matter. I can only wish all administrators were as responsible and represented the project even half as well as you do. Vodello (talk) 03:47, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
- I'm going to note here that, per WP:TALK guidelines, I removed a rude comment from Pedro left on my talk page at [2] without a response strictly because he did the exact same action on his talk page when reprimanded by Raul654, a Wikipedia bureaucrat.[3] If he thinks a bureaucrat is "foolish" and that Pedro "simply supported the candidate as a level headed fellow and per nom", there is no response I can make to what the administrator is treating as a game. Hyperdrive (video game)
Great work finding the articles about the game, Hyperdrive (video game). When I looked for it I was unable to find anything. I was wondering if you could share how you found those old sources through archive.org? --Odie5533 (talk) 17:03, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
- The official website for the game had a page of links for news and reviews, located here. Since all the links were dead, I threw the URLs into the Wayback Machine and many were thankfully archived. I apologize for seemingly getting upset, but I probably spent two hours overall trying to find scans of the coverage of the game in EGM2 and Electronic Gaming Monthly. It's hard enough to find coverage of arcade games in magazines as opposed to console games. I now know that you do look for reliable sources unlike 99% of the others I've encountered at AFD that ignore WP:BEFORE, and I apologize for assuming you were in the same group.
- It looks like it received a lot of coverage for an arcade game. I'm way behind on a bunch of other projects right now on and off-wiki, so I don't have time to incorporate the references into the article. I prepared the five web sources using Template:Cite web, and also have the GamePro source ready below with Template:Cite journal. If you could find a way to put these references into the article, it'd be very much appreciated. Thank you for withdrawing the nomination. Do you know if there will always be a tag on the talk page if an article has previously been nominated for deletion? - Sorry, you'll have to pursue this without me. There's plenty of proof of disruption littered throughout his edits, including his favoritism displayed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tom Kotchman. I've really just gotta stay away from this place for a while. I feel like if I brought this to WP:ANI I'd be the one that gets vilified. I feel responsible for the temper tantrum he's had at Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Baseball, and I don't want to be the one to take this any further. I can't believe he's reacted this way. He must be stopped. I'm on break, though, until at least December. There's only so much of this passive aggressive bullshit that I can take. I hope I didn't offend you by changing the type of dash used on Detroit's current article. I think the use of two types is rather silly, personally, but I try to keep everything uniform. After watching the whole Alex thing go unnoticed by an admin for almost a month, to the point where it was archived without even being resolved really put me off on bothering to report things there, as though they only pay attention to the dramafest known as WP:AN/I but not WP:AN. I'm not too familiar with all the places to report users, especially WP:AN3. I was uninvolved with his disruption, but just a quick look at his history showed a very disturbing trend. Hi
I saw your post on the Wikiproject talk page. Glad to see you editing around again, and trying to help us make us focus on these key bios. The baseball project have changed their focus from creating and working lists (some of which were kinda useless) to improving baseball biographies of old-time ballplayers, and some amazing work is being done there. I dedicated most of my time to expanding baseball biographies as well though I'll admit it's a bit hard for all of us because it's the beginning of baseball season, and dealing with the usual vandalism and such. There's WP:HighBeam if you are interested. I also acquired a massive library of baseball history and biography books in which I'll let people confirm citations and such with. Think about the next work you planning to do and let me know if I could be an help. Thanks Secret account 16:40, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
You're doing an amazing job!
My dad hadn't checked the article for Hobie Landrith in a few years, and he was blown away by how much more detailed it was, with over a hundred well-placed references. We looked through the change history and discovered that you were single-handedly responsible for adding 60,000 bytes to a 4,000-byte article in July 2010. Further, Landrith was only on of the many articles you expanded to keep the records of these players in living memory. So I just wanted to write to say thank you for being such an asset to the project; what you do here makes a huge difference. I wish you good health and all the best; thanks again! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.126.66.107 (talk) 19:17, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

Anyway, to add onto the comments I made last month, I just want to ask if this is Gary I'm speaking to. If so, I do have plans for the wife and I to move back to the Sacramento area next year.
- I found out today that the long tradition of Landrith family catchers continues, leading me to follow up here in case you ever read this stuff. Thanks again for your kind words and for letting me know your father read the article. That definitely helped me through a still tough time. My dad is just a fan who remembered Landrith, and looked him up because he sees him occasionally at a local municiple golf course. Sorry for the confusion. I showed my dad your reply and he said he'll try to say hi and show Landrith your article if he sees the player again. I am not Gary, though I hope your move goes well. - Whoops, sorry for the mixup! I'm still glad you guys liked the improvements made to the article. I hope Mr. Landrith likes the additions I made. Mr Landrith is in the, I guess I'll just say general area of where I'll be moving. It'd actually be nice to meet him for lunch one day at least once after I move to Sacramento next year if possible, as I'd be making yearly trips to Santa Clara/San Jose for a convention.
