A new year, a new FAC
Heya Ceoil. Greetings from Denmark! Can you please take a pre-FAC look over Marriage License? The painting raises interesting questions about what art it and who should police that boundary. -- In actu (Guerillero) 09:49, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
- Had a read through looks good. Wont be able to look again for a week or so. Ceoil (talk) 23:42, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
- No worries. Thank you for your help! -- In actu (Guerillero) Parlez Moi 07:31, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi In actu, your very welcome and I'm really not seeing major issues here - well written, comprehensive, nicely sourced, all nicely formatted etc; It looks good to me. I have a few more trivial suggestions, but as they are slight might demand via the talk rather than any future FAC page.
- Re :"what art it and who should police that boundary" I have been reading your statements on this, and its certainly thought provoking - I see art in two buckets - pre and post early-modernism and try not use the same measures to compare (to be glib, same as I see rock as pre and post sex pistols, or a favourite comparison of boomers, can you compare Keats to Dylan...no). Ceoil (talk) 23:59, 26 January 2023 (UTC)
- Ps - Denmark! wow! Spent two months in Copenhagen in the mid 90s when Christiania was in it prime. I remember nothing :) Ceoil (talk) 00:06, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

Hello.
I noticed you deleted a lot of valuable information in Knockraha.
Do not do this please. It goes against the spirit of Wikipedia
185.31.96.96 (talk) 19:41, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi 185, the reasons you were reverted is that all claims here need to be cited to a reliable source, which you have not provided - your additions are overly detailed...but could be summarised down, if you let me know where they came from. Anyway, posted comments on the article's talk - we could do with a section (or separate article) on Sing Sing prison (Knockraha), its a deeply interesting and very lonely spot. Ceoil (talk) 23:48, 26 January 2023 (UTC)
Which punct?
Your revert reason didn't say which bit of punct you found problematic, so I tried a different way. Feel free to say. Dicklyon (talk) 04:45, 27 January 2023 (UTC)
Meaning of edit summary?
Regarding this edit of yours, I certainly don't oppose the content of the edit, since I wrote what you restored, but I don't understand your edit summary ("wrong voice"?). Care to explain further what "wrong voice" was supposed to mean? I don't see what was wrong with it. I added the additional introductory clause since it didn't seem to be clear enough to the person who made the previous edit that there is already criticism in the preceding sections of the article. If you think it's clear enough without the extra clause, that's fine with me, but I don't understand what "wrong voice" was supposed to mean. Biogeographist (talk) 13:23, 27 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Biogeographist, I can see where you are coming from but the edit was intended as helpful rather than disparaging. Apologies if it seemed heavy handed. What I meant is that the wiki "voice" can't refer to itself ("In addition to criticism previously mentioned..."), because it is personalising in a format that is edited by thousands rather than one user, and also it is circular: as you are then effectively using yourself as a source. FAC for The Widows of Culloden
Posting here so as to not take over Tom's FAC :) Since you appreciate the Widow's Weeds, I'd love to have your comments at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/The Widows of Culloden/archive1, if you have the time/interest. ♠PMC♠ (talk) 06:17, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

Hello
I thought I'd fill a red link with a small simple article. But no! It's ENA, so there's the well maybe its a van Eyck, no it's not really a van Eyck, and the van Eyck isn't a Christus; the date depends on when van Eyck died, when the donor was in Bruges, when Christus was active, etc. In other words, more than I thought it would be - but it's a lovely piece. Thanks so much for adding bits and linking to Panofsky. I had a little spurt of activity that's about to run out, but wanted to get this into main space then add to it slowly as I can. Hope all is well. I see you're still in the tomb business. I love the Burgundian ones. Victoria (tk) 23:54, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
- Funnily while in the US over xmass I didn't have international roaming on my very old iphone, and while out an about was distracting myself with a pdf of the Ainsworth saved from the Met. Also, not sure why, had a premonition this page was going to "manifest" - maybe you red-liked it sometime ion the last few weeks or so, but whatever delighted to see it here now! and I might pick up on expanding here and day if you dont mind. Re the tomb business, while the Mary tomb was meant to be primarily about sculpture, finding myself increasingly veering towards the tragedy of her life, and idealised romance she had with Max. Although a hard nosed accountant by day, hers is such great story, my old bones are almost swooning. Ceoil (talk) 00:04, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
- I found the same Ainsworth pdf on an old back up drive a few days ago. Which was nice. And I thought it might be time to do something about the tree, which frustrates me to no end. I'm finding the Exeter Madonna more interesting for now, but my time is limited. Laughing at the hard-nosed accountant swooning. Victoria (tk) 00:14, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, of course, expand away. You're much faster than I am these days. Victoria (tk) 00:14, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
- I might if thats ok - Craig Harbison discusses how and why it was initially attributed to Jan, and why the theory was finally rejected. Someday would also love to put aside time to dig into the painting to the right - really calming, pastel and harmonious colours vs. a very, very unsettling, god in the sky watching, perspective. Of course I find the idea of god in the sky ridiculous, but the sense of being part of a play, or whatever, for somebody else's amusement, does resonate. Ceoil (talk) 00:21, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
- I don't have Harbison. I have Ainsworth, Upton, and a newer pdf that I've not yet read (can't remember the author, but it's from the Frick exhibition, I think). And since I've basically been awol from Wikipedia for years and years in terms of writing anything, well.. I've never known what to think of that Annunciation - it's interesting. It's true that Christus used angles to settle or unsettle. Victoria (tk) 00:38, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
- Phew. The above was sort of guessing. Absent for years or not, your clarity when writing still puts me to shame, so if you don't mind me helping on research, steppin on toes or not, but we always bounced well of each other when building content, that would be fine. Ceoil (talk) 01:46, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
- I don't think I'm being terribly clear, more like flailing - but thanks. No, there's no toe stepping, if anything I kinda feel it goes the opposite way, that I'm stepping on toes. I was going through the Dry Tree and it bugged me that we didn't have that article. I didn't realize it was so complicated. Anyway, I've barely scratched the surface on reading and things being as they are need to work slowly and I have to keep forcing myself not to get too involved, to step away, if you know what I mean. Victoria (tk) 02:13, 16 February 2023 (UTC)

FYI - I'm done with the tomb. Didn't want to edit conflict you but saw lots of edits there and investigated, saw it was at FAC and took a quick run through. Victoria (tk) 04:25, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
- Much, much appreciated, esp with the US vs Brit spelling; was a loss there and starting to panic! The Madonna is coming on great. I love the tiles (although they are at a an unusually steep angle) and of cource the townscape and small figures...never bettered imo than in Saint Luke Drawing the Virgin. Ceoil (talk) 04:34, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks so much for the crop! I was wondering about that crop tool but couldn't find it and then gave up. Don't panic re the tomb. I'll try to take another run through if I get to during the weekend. Victoria (tk) 04:45, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
- My crop is now way too small and looks a bit silly - the origional file isn't great, so searching around for a better repro so can get higher rez details. I wonder if we could use File:Petrus christus, madonna exeter, 1450 ca. 01.JPG for the lead, as it has a frame. Ceoil (talk) 04:49, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
- I tried looking for one at a higher rez but no luck yet. Am done for the night but will have to have you teach me how to use that crop tool - I'm not seeing it on the list of tools? Putting in the file w/ frame is fine w/ me if we're allowed to do that. For some reason I thought frames had to be cropped away. Victoria (tk) 05:25, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
- Im not finding higher rez repros either. Flip. The crop tool is an add-in on commons, use https://croptool.toolforge.org/ (which will know your en wiki signon after first log on) and change the file name before saving. You were a life saver tonight on the tomb...thats now 18 pints of Guinness I reckon I owe you :) Ceoil (talk) 05:33, 18 February 2023 (UTC)

my daily stories |
Thank you today for Corp Naomh, introduced: "Highly ornate and visually appealing (although badly damaged) 9th or 10th century bell shrine that was heavily rebuilt in the 15th century for the better. Originally commissioned as a reliquary container for the hand-bell relic of a, by then, long dead Irish saint (whose identity is now lost), it is now considered a high point of medieval Irish metalwork."! - I remember reviewing it with interest and pleasure. I like that it appears on the Sunday (last Sunday before Lent) for which Bach had composed his audition cantata. - Happy new year time, - when I came in January, small flowers seemed in conflict with the serious image ;) -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:12, 19 February 2023 (UTC)

Tomb of Philippe Pot
I'm in the process of booking a flat in Paris for a week at the end of April, and will certainly make a point of visiting the Louvre to see the tomb. Thank you for a lovely article. Incidentally, do we know how the surname "Pot" is pronounced? I'm often unsure which French words ending in "..ot" have a silent "t" and which don't. Tim riley talk 15:25, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Tim riley: It is a fantastic sight in person! Thinking of the pattern of Paris tourism, the line for the Louvre should be as reasonable as that line ever gets in April, assuming you are missing the Easter holidays. -- In actu (Guerillero) Parlez Moi 15:51, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for that! I've always been lucky with the Louvre, and I hope we'll get in this time without too much queueing. Tim riley talk 15:59, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
- Tim, my guess that its not pronounced (as with Guillot etc). Also its derived from Philip via the pet name Philipot. Enjoy trip and dont forget to take pics of the tomb, espically his odd facial expression[1], which frankly reminds me of early 80s sitcoms - as in "oh crikey, I dead"! Ceoil (talk) 18:30, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
- Ps, am madly jealous of your visit - the joys of retirement. Hope it goes great for you. Ceoil (talk) 15:09, 25 February 2023 (UTC)

FAR for Sex Pistols
Not going to give you the template on this one - was basing the FAR off your concerns from 2021 about "excitable language and bloat". I'm sure Nikkimaria & Co. will give you as much time as you want if you would like to work on it, just thought I'd get the ball rolling. I'll be basically useless at content work on this one - the closest to punk music I ever listen to is Ball and Chain (Social Distortion song) and I do some of my editing on a work computer whose filtering software would probably report me to IT if I spend too much time on something with that title. Pot's tomb
Since I made edits to Pot's tomb as far back as 2018, not long after it was started, and at some point had sources stuffed away, I'm feeling a bit invested or something. Anyway, have made some edits there that might work. Revert anything you hate. I have to bail out of Wikipedia for the foreseeable future for the same health reasons that usually keep me away. Because of those reasons I've decided not to post to FAC; leaving that you :) Best, Victoria (tk) 21:43, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
- I'm so sorry to hear, but please do (privately or here) let me know how you are going. ps: your edits to the tomb have been great, thank you once again :) Ceoil (talk) 22:34, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
Tomb of Philippe Pot
Hi @Ceoil! I saw the other day that the peer review discussion on Tomb of Philippe Pot was already closed and I had one small comment. I've noticed that the article could more explicitly address the relevance of naturalism. The comparison to Rogier van der Weyden is one such opportunity, i.e. thinking about these figures in reference to the exact naturalism and the almost sculptural qualities of van der Weyden's painting. Again, this is not really critical as far as the content is concerned, but it'd be worth mentioning.
And it also reminded me to express my appreciation for your extensive contributions in Northern Renaissance art. I had posted on Victoriaearle's talk page earlier today with the same sentiment and wanted I give the same barnstar to you. I hope we can collaborate on art history topics in the future.

For your extensive contributions to Northern Renaissance art content on Wikipedia, a valuable learning (and teaching) resource. Ppt91talk 20:52, 4 March 2023 (UTC) |
Thank you very much for posting. I agree re Rogier, and can add, as have done with the stunning Tomb of Isabella of Bourbon. Its always great to talk to a fellow appreciator of Northern Renaissance art. But to be clear, Victoria is the brains behind the various wiki pages. The next planned project is Madonna of the Dry Tree, if you feel so inclined to help out, eg copy-editing, that would be fantastic. Its a dark spectral work and totally absorbing. Ceoil (talk) 22:28, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
- That's a fascinating painting and most certainly. Feel free to ping me as you're moving forward, either article talk page or either user talk page, just so I know where you are in the process. Or, if you'd like me to copy-edit at leisure–as long as it doesn't interfere with your plans for the article more broadly–I am happy to do so. I also wonder if there is something to be said about its influence on modern artists, especially the surrealists, but I might just be projecting and, either way, will need to find reliable scholarship to support it with. Talk soon. :) Ppt91talk 20:21, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
Sound and happy days. It goes without saying thrat you can shout here for help on anything, and re the tree...talk later. Expect to be pinged :) Ceoil (talk) 20:29, 5 March 2023 (UTC)

Nirvana sound files
Hi Ceoil! I'm asking for some help or advice. I've worked on the article for Nirvana's Nevermind and been having trouble getting a couple of sound files to pass the non-free rationale. There's this bot that removes them and I need the files to get past. They are "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Come as You Are". Carlinal (talk) 19:13, 14 March 2023 (UTC)
