Reset Password with Inaccessible Email Address
How can I reset my password if the email address associated with the account no longer exists?
173.59.123.56 (talk) 01:28, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi IP 173.59.123.56. Unfortunately, I don't believe that's possible as expained in WP:LOSTPASSWORD. I'm pretty sure you need a valid email address to reset your password because the system will send you a link that allows you to reset your password. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:45, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks. Any idea what I should do?
- For a site with such a large membership that's been around so long, they don't seem to have thought this out very thoroughly. I've been able to rescue my userID on several other sites where this has happened since I retired.
- 2600:4040:7E06:F700:715C:F324:1C32:A253 (talk) 16:35, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
- The only thing you can do, if you cannot remember your password, is to create a new account and identify it as a successor to your old account("I am User5678, I was User1234 but lost access"). It's up to the user to keep any email address they attach to their account updated in case they need to recover their password. No one has access to the email addresses of other users. 331dot (talk) 16:47, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

Main page for a category is disambig
Should this category: Category:Cableways main article be the disambig page of Cable car?
(on other subjects how to you link to a category in a discussion?) BeckyAnne(talk) 03:46, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
- @BeckyAnne: [[:Category:Cableways]] yields Category:Cableways. You could try to discuss this at the category's talk page, but you are not likely to get a response, so you can try to discuss it on the talk page of the relevant project, or even at talk:Cable car -Arch dude (talk) 04:33, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
How to access deleted talkpages
There's this rather dubious article Automated Lip Reading. Its talkpage even has an entry from back in 2007 sqaying that the entire issue is highly suspect, linking to a talkpage for this ominious Frank Hubner where the entire issue of supposed Automated Lip Reading, as discussed in the article, was pointed out as an absolute hoax. Unfortunately, the original article for Frank Hubner seems deleted due to said evidence for hoax and foul play and was re-directed to an utterly different person called Frank Hübner.
Thing is, I have found out by myself that Hubner's supposed results from his miracle software was an entire hoax. There's the British Channel 5 documentary Hitler's Private World Revealed (2006), which remains the only original source to Hubner's claims about ASL, and you can clearly see from that YouTube excerpt alone that the supposed results from his fabled miracle software are, in fact, simply excerpts from the 1974 film Swastika, where its director Philippe Mora had openly admitted that he had created the very lip-readings and dub himself (where Mora had employed human lip readers) that Hubner tried to pass off as results from his own miracle software in the 2006 documentary. Not only are the texts identical, it's even the very same dubbing sound recordings and mix, complete with sound FX and all, from the 1974 film that you can buy on DVD ever since 2010/12. The only reason why the press didn't blow the cover on Hubner in 2006 right away was the fact that on its 1974 Cannes premiere, Swastika caused a scandal and the screening was aborted but a few minutes into the film that afterwards remained largely unreleased for decades, which is why it's also virtually unknown.
So, I'd like to know how I can access the above deleted talkpage for further evidence, in order to use it in order to get that hoax article about Automated Lip Reading deleted. Or, well...maybe with today's Machine learning of the 2020s, there *MAY* be a justification to have an article about the topic, but the entire ASL thing by Hubner back in 2006 was nothing but a huge hoax. 2003:EF:170A:9274:E56D:1979:D7AE:B44E (talk) 04:16, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

How do you extend tables in list pages of Wikipedia?
The list List of In Our Time programmes stops rather abruptly in October 2022. Is there any way in which it could be extended please, so that it can have in details for subsequent programmes, such as that on Wilfred Owen, that on the Morant Bay rebellion or, indeed, the programme that will be on today (January 12 2023) on John Donne? How to be sure the article is neutral enough?
Hi! I had submitted a draft for Jonathan Cherki's bio in English that was declined a month ago. I found new sources to back it up and edited it but I want to be sure it fully respects the neutral tone of voice. What do you think? Thanks! Draft:Jonathan Cherki ~~~~ UnicornMadrid (talk) 10:17, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
- UnicornMadrid If you want a review, the best thing to do is submit it for a review instead of asking for a pre-review review. Since you are here, I would ask you if you are associated with this person or his company in some way. The draft seems more about his company than about him personally- it could be that the company merits an article and not him. The sources offered do not seem to have significant coverage of Mr. Cherki, they just tell the things he has done, and not why he is significant or influential enough to merit inclusion in an encyclopedia of human knowledge. We need sources that go into detail about how Mr. Cherki is significant or influential as the source sees it. Please read the definition of a notable person and also a notable business.
- Funding rounds and business acquisitions are routine business activities that do not establish notability of either him or his business. 331dot (talk) 10:24, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
- The word "passion" will trigger any reviewer's bullshit detector. The statement in which it occurs is sourced to an article based on things Cherki has said; Wikipedia is not interested in what people have said about themselves, only in what independent sources have said about them. Assistance in trying to determine notability
Hello! While patrolling SWViewer I came across someone who changed the birthplace of Alex Clark (animator) who I reverted for not providing a source (i've since removed the birthplace since it's unsourced). The user responded on my talk page and claims to be his sister (whether that's true or not I don't know). I told them about having a COI and also about our BLP policy. I also said that they might not be notable enough to have an article, and I started searching for sources. However I"m having a hard time finding any that are actually relevant to the subject since many people have had the name "Alex Clark" and I"m not sure if they actually aren't notable or if I'm searching wrong. Could someone possibly help me? ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 16:58, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

- @Blaze Wolf: You have made a good-faith effort to find sources, and failed. Your next move is to nominate the article for deletion (maybe WP:PROD first). It will then be up to the article's defenders to find the sources. See WP:BEFORE. I think the principle here is that you cannot prove a negative. -Arch dude (talk) 14:07, 13 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Arch dude: Ah alright. I figured I"d ask here since I'm sometimes terrible at searching for sources (which will sometimes end up with me in nominating an article for deletion because i Couldn't find sources when I just was searching wrong). ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:11, 13 January 2023 (UTC)

- Mercresis should not have cast aspersions about modern_primat's possible political motives. It was wrong to do that, even if not necessarily a personal attack. Such accusations of political bias should either be made at the appropriate noticeboard (and with adequate proof), or not at all.
- That being said, once they explained themselves, modern_primat did keep a very belligerent tone. Modern_primat, even when you are completely right, you should remain calm. If you really, really, really want to escalate this, the way to go is WP:ANI, but I strongly advise against it.

we must be "passionate" when we creating ansiklopedia(wrong word, i too lazy to fix it). take it or leave it.
:- No, you should not be passionate. If you are angry, tired, sad, etc. to the point that it affects your interactions with other editors, step away from the keyboard and come back later.
- You should definitely proofread / edit your posts as a matter of netiquette. When you talk / write to a single person, it might be socially acceptable to not correct easy-to-overlook mistakes, because spending one minute of writing to make the recipient win one second of reading is not worth it. However, if what you write is read by 100 people, then spending one minute of writing to make all those people win one second of reading is worth it on the aggregate.

Signature and timestamp button
I have been doing some work in the Template:Did you know nominations area recently, and I've found that there is no "signature and timestamp" button to automatically add my signature as there is in most of the rest of Wikipedia. Here at the Help Desk, for exampkle, when editing, I see a B for boldface, an I for italics, an "x and cursive l" for signature and timestamp, two chainlinks for a link, etc., but over at, say, Template:Did you know nominations/Berta Berkovich Kohut there's no "x and cursive l" for signature and timestamp. Why is it different over there? I don't see any reason why it should be so that I have to type ~~~~ by hand. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 18:54, 13 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Metropolitan90: The template namespace is not meant for discussions with signed posts so the signature button is omitted from the toolbar like in articles and some other namespaces (a signature would often break actual templates). "Did you know" nominations use the template space inappropriately. It has been discussed to move the nominations but it was deemed too much work. Below the edit area you may have have a drop-down list which inludes "Wiki markup" with a clickable

Fair use photos
If I want to edit a Wikipedia page about a person, is it allowable to upload a non-free photo of that person under fair use? The ones I have seen on other pages were all for deceased persons - is that a rule that you can't do it if the person is still living? I'm also wondering about the maximum allowed resolution. The photos I've seen on other pages all had maximum dimensions of 400 pixels or less is that a general rule? Fracton (talk) 19:04, 13 January 2023 (UTC)
- Fracton, the WP:FAIRUSE criteria #1 states that fair use is unapplicable if a free equivalent could be created, or a picture of the living person be taken. Sungodtemple (talk • contribs) 19:10, 13 January 2023 (UTC)
- WP:IMAGERES has recommended dimensions. Sungodtemple (talk • contribs) 19:11, 13 January 2023 (UTC)
- Ok, though that's unfortunate since in a lot of cases it will be impractical to obtain the photo and so a lot of pages will never display a photo of the person they are about. Fracton (talk) 20:46, 13 January 2023 (UTC)
- Have you read Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria? Under WP:NFCC#1, non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, or could be created, ... For a living person, someone could take a photo, so that crierion isn't met. - David Biddulph (talk) 19:13, 13 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Fracton You didn't link the BLP article where you wanted to add a photo so I can only give general advice. One possibility is to do a Google image search for their name and then use the "Tools" menu on the results page to seek images with Creative Commons licenses. Such images can be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (as long as the license doesn't include "NC"=no commercial use). Alternatively, if the biography includes a link to their website or the name of their institution you could reach out to them via email and offer assistance in getting a selfie they have taken uploaded to Commons. Restoration of an article that was previously deleted
Hi. How do I restore an article that was deleted in March of 2019 by a roving gang of illiterate British editors with zero background or educational exposure to the topic at hand. The topic at hand, was on the Central Asian-American Enterprise Fund (also the name of the article) that had been orginally posted in 2009 or 2010, but 10 years later or so, was nominated for deletion by a complete ignoramus (a British low-level techie), and once moved to the article for deletion phase, was deleted against mine and another Wikipedia editor's wishes, by a group of solely British editors and administrators, who had never heard of US efforts to fund private enterprise in the post-Soviet satellite nations, during the 1990s. Unfortunately, for me, I was the only editor of this article which should never have been deleted to begin with and was a working article for nearly 10 years on Wikipedia. How do I restore this article to Wikipedia, since Central Asia and its issues, have recently emerged in the US press, and would have provided some background for these recent news events? Thank you. Stevenmitchell (talk) 05:46, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, Stevenmitchell. If you are hoping to get an article restored, accusing editors who disageee with you of being a
roving gang of illiterate British editors with zero background or educational exposure to the topic at hand
is pretty much the opposite of a productive approach. It is metaphorically like taking a loaded Colt .45 revolver and firing three shots into your own ankle and foot. This is a collaborative project. Insulting your fellow editors simply does not work. Calling a fellow editor acomplete ignoramus
is an utterly unacceptable personal attack. If you do not cease that misconduct forever, you will be blocked from editing. Cullen328 (talk) 07:19, 14 January 2023 (UTC) - You can see some advice on re-creating the article here:[1]. See also [2]. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:20, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Stevenmitchell See No Personal Attacks. Talk about content, not about other editors. An illiterate editor would clearly not be able to nominate an article for deletion, so your note is not logical. (Notice that I didn't say anything here about you. I made a comment about the content only.) And a "roving gang", really? How do you know their movements? You would do well to heed Cullen's advice. David10244 (talk) 12:01, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Central Asian-American Enterprise Fund sheds some light on this.
- What Cullen328 said, Stevenmitchell. But if you can lay off the indignation and name-calling, and can instead coolly, concisely and persuasively explain how the decision to delete was based on premises that are no longer valid, then the person to ask is BD2412, on User talk:BD2412. -- Hoary (talk) 08:17, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
Drafts vs. Sandboxes / Moving pages
Hello! I just wanted to ask a couple of questions about dealing with drafts, sandboxes and their respective namespaces, hopefully I'm in the right place to do so.
1.) Firstly, how do I determine when I should choose a sandbox over a draft while creating my test articles, and vice versa?
Since I joined this platform in the last summer, I've used AfC tools to create several drafts and submit them for review, as I was still learning how to structure full articles and meet notability criteria, rather than just editing or adding citations here and there. However, I think I've got a decent grasp of the fundamentals now, or at least the ones regarding specific topics: for now, I mainly cover association football articles. [Here are, respectively, one of my "passed experiments" and one of my "failed" ones, for context]. What's more, I've realized that I can create multiple subpages and sandboxes in order to make tests, as well.
So, should I use my own userspace pages more? Or could I still take advantage of AfC tools in particular cases, especially when the article is really close to meet WP:GNG? I'd really appreciate anyone who can clarify this aspect, as I should probably stop filling up what's already a pretty saturated draft backlog...
2.) Now, being an auto-confirmed user, I'm allowed to move pages and sandbox articles by myself. However, if one of my Drafts happens to meet GNG after a while, should I still let someone else review it, rather than performing the move by myself?
Also, can I directly turn sandbox pages into full articles, once they meet GNG? I still haven't had the opportunity to rename a page, so I'm still unfamiliar with it...
I hope I've expressed myself clearly enough.
Thanks to everyone who will take (and have) the time to reply!
Oltrepier (talk) 14:18, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
- My personal approach is to build articles up in userspace, then move directly to article space when I am happy that they're finished. I think that's always what I've done for every new article I've written. There's no policy requiring me to do that, but I find it most convenient. You don't need to go through AfC, but be aware that new pages in article space will still be reviewed by WP:NPP reviewers. Girth Summit (blether) 14:36, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Girth Summit That's right, I didn't even think about it!
- And new pages that fail the review can still be kept as Drafts (or re-converted to sandboxes), proved that their quality and/or content is at least acceptable, right? Oltrepier (talk) 15:06, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Oltrepier: Generally articles are moved back to draft/their creator's userspace if they turn out to be unsiutable for mainspace but they meet none of the speedy deletion criteria, however, since draftifying is not meant to be a backdoor deletion per WP:DRAFTIFY, theree is a chance they end up at AFD instead]]. Victor Schmidt (talk) 15:56, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Victor Schmidt Right. So, in short: you should publish a full article only when it's really time to publish it. : D

PROFESSIONAL WRITERS
HI all, I am super confused. I spent weeks working on an article for a person who definitely deserves a wiki page. dozens of published books, articles, congress testimony, featured on documentaries on and on.. I followed the outline of other wiki articles and feel like it was very well backed up. But it was rejected. I find the feedback confusing. when I ask specific questions about how to fix it, I dont get an answer. so as I was googling around to try and understand what I am doing incorrectly...I saw that there are companies you can hire to write articles and submit them for you. I assume they know exactly what is needed but I thought this was unacceptable? I thought wiki could only be written by an individual who is not closely associated with the subject but not hired to do so. Can someone clarify for me? it might be worth hiring someone to help me understand how to write it so it won't get rejected. advice please>>> Childrenandart (talk) 16:10, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
- Professional companies that write articles on a subject aren't banned per se, but they do have lots of things that they have to do to be done correctly (such as denoting the payment and their WP:COI on the subject). However, there's no guarentee that these articles will be any better, or be any less deleted. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 16:12, 14 January 2023 (UTC)

- @Childrenandart The draft appears to be Draft:Michael Fairbanks and currently, I'm afraid it is in a terrible state. Writing acceptable articles, particularly of living people, where Wikipedia has exacting standards summarized at WP:BLP is extremely difficult for new editors. For example, you have not followed the guidance at WP:SURNAME as you often refer to Fairbanks as "Mike", which is not appropriate. The draft strays into topics that have little to do with him: for example details about his family and their home. Why do we need to know
The home contains 1828 murals on the first and second floor by itinerant artist, Rufus Porter.
? My advice would be to cut 80% of the text, leaving only the parts that will convince reviewers that Fairbanks is notable by Wikipedia's criteria. Back up all that you leave in with properly cited references to reliable sources and forget that anyone "definitely deserves" an article: it is our job as editors to demonstrate why this person is more noteworthy than the 7-billion-plus people on the planet who don't have one but may feel their life is equally "deserving". - The article is Draft:Michael Christoper Fairbanks. Like many drafts that have been turned down, it reads far more like a CV than an encyclopedia article. The reason given was that it needs more cites to reliable sources.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 16:14, 14 January 2023 (UTC)

I'm not trying to trick you into giving anything away here, it's just best that you are frank and honest about the situation so we can give you the best advice on doing things properly. It's difficult to believe that you have no particular connection to this person, but also that you are so keen that we host an article about them that you would be willing to pay a company to write one. Theo Stavropoulos, artist
Hello, I would like to know how I can submit my father's information (Théo Stavropoulos, 1930-2007) for entry into Wikipedia. He was a fine artist of note. Thank you, Dominique (Stavropoulos) Williams Dgsinteriors (talk) 19:56, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Dgsinteriors Welcome to the Teahouse. I googled your father's name and all the main links are to his own website and social media, together with an obituary that has not been published on a reliable source like a mainstream newspaper. Thus it is unlikely that there is sufficient published information in depth about him to base a Wikipedia draft demonstrating he is notable in the sense used here. Nevertheless, if you wish to try to create a draft, please read the links I've provided plus WP:YFA and WP:BACKWARD and proceed via the WP:AFC process. - @Dgsinteriors Not easily. You can't base such an article on your own knowledge. On WP, an article on Théo Stavropoulos should be a summary of published reliable sources (WP:RS), independent of him (and his family etc). Articles in journals and newspapers, books that write about him, etc. What are the 3-5 best such sources you can think of that write about him in some detail? Without such sources, a WP article will not be kept. Also, take a look at WP:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing. If WP accepts such an article, it will not be under your control. If there are media reports that he was involved in the theft of America (perhaps not a very likely example), it will be mentioned in there. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:42, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
Redirecting articles I created
Hi, I created a select number of articles on concert tours a few years ago. I made them when I was younger and looking back at them now, I don't think all of them should stay on Wikipedia due to their brevity, sourcing, and lack of importance. However, since I created those articles, I don't know if it would be an issue if I was the one to redirect them back to the band's WP page. Additionally, a few of these articles feature images I uploaded, and they may end up being orphaned and subsequently deleted. Any thoughts? Thank you. Chrisnait (talk | contribs) 23:48, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Chrisnait, it would not be an issue to blank and redirect those articles. If another editor disagrees, they can just revert you. Yes, any fair use images would likely be deleted, though it's likely that re-uploading them should the article be restored would be easy to do. For Category:Clock Designs, why is Grandfather Clock listed under L?
I mean, I think my question says it all. There is no G section in Category:Clock designs, and for whatever reason, Grandfather Clock has been listed under L. 104.157.57.223 (talk) 00:46, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- Interesting. It looks like it's been sorted under longcase clock, but that's not a likely place to look for it. I am going to look at Talk:Grandfather clock to see if there's a reason for it, and if not, I'll move it. —C.Fred (talk) 00:49, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- See Wikipedia:Categorization#Sort keys for the feature. If a sort key appears unconnected to the article title then the key was usually made before a move.[6] PrimeHunter (talk) 01:42, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
Tagging an uncredited translation from fr.wikipedia
Earlier today I came across the article Marie-Gabriel-Florent-Auguste de Choiseul-Gouffier. It's essentially a one-author article, created in 2007 and largely unchanged since then. It is almost completely unsourced, but the amount of specific detail and the prose style both suggested that it had been copied from somewhere else. A quick search showed that all but a single paragraph of the content had been translated (or in some places, mistranslated) from the corresponding article in French Wikipedia. I've tagged it with Template:Translated page, but I want to make sure that (a) this was the right thing to do, and (b) I applied the template correctly, especially the insertversion parameter (which if I understand correctly should point to the second big text dump on the day the article was created, which is where the copied material was first introduced). If a more experienced editor could give it a quick look, I'd appreciate it. Thanks, Crawdad Blues (talk) 01:06, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- Crawdad Blues I think you have done what is needed according to Help:Translation, which is
- (a) Make an edit with an edit summary like:
Content in this edit is translated from the existing French Wikipedia article at [[:fr:Exact name of French article]]; see its history for attribution.
- (b) Optionally place the template {{Translated page}} for example
{{Translated page|fr|Exact name of the French article}}
on the target article's talk page. You put it on the article page, from where it was moved by a bot.
- (a) Make an edit with an edit summary like:
- I checked whether the article author needed a warning, but they have not edited since 2017.TSventon (talk) 16:41, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- Ah, on the talk page rather than the article page. I missed that. Thanks, TSventon. Cheers, Crawdad Blues (talk) 18:21, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

Multiple tabs - on Windows desktop app
Hi, I have an Android version of Wikipedia for my Samsung phone. It has multiple tabs (as a built-in feature). Sometimes I have 20 tabs open, (so I can read them later on). I would like to know if I could have multiple tabs open, when I use the Windows app, (that I have downloaded to my Window Home PC). It doesn't appear to have multiple tabs. Mpeb67 (talk) 01:21, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Mpeb67: Use Ctrl + T to open a new tab on the web browser you're using on your PC and visit Wikipedia on each tab which will enable you to have multiple tabs on Wikipedia open at once, plus they are stored in your history if you don't wish to have them open 24/7, meaning they can be visited at a subsequent time. Hope this helps. StarryNightSky11 ☎ 03:28, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
I edited a stub template--problem
I tried to edit a stub template, but it's not working the way I intended. I edited Template:Azecidae-stub (a family of molluscs). The template had been feeding into Category:Gastropod stubs. But I wanted to move it to a more specific stub category--Category:Orthurethra stubs. So I edited the template to match others that are already feeding to Orthorethra stubs. Now, the stub articles that have that template show Orthurethra stub on their pages. But they do not appear on the Orthurethra stub category page. They DO still appear on the Gastropod stubs category page. Also, Azecidae does not appear at all on the page listing the stub types (I did a search for the word). Have I missed something? Or do I have to wait? Uporządnicki (talk) 02:46, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- In case it helps, let me add this. There are two stub articles I wanted to move. They are Gomphroa remyi and Hypnophila. They both already had the Azecidae stub template (which already existed, and fed to Gastropod stubs); I did not edit the article pages. Uporządnicki (talk) 02:53, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- @AzseicsoK: You have to wait. If a category is added by a template then a template edit is often reflected much sooner on pages using the template than on the category page. A null edit of a page with the template (not the template itself or the category page) will force an update of category pages for that specific page but there is no hurry in this case so just wait. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:33, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

Nominate a .css or .js for deletion
Hello. Can you tell me how to nominate CSS or JS style page for deletion? It is impossible to put a deletion template on it. Can someone remove this page: User:Alex Great/vector.css? Thanks. Αλέξης ο Μέγας (📢 | 📥) 06:31, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Alex Great: Speedy deletion templates do work on CSS and JS pages. Just place {{db-user}} or {{db-author}} on it and the page will be added to speedy deletion categories which is what counts. CSS and JS pages are processed like normal wikitext pages when categories and link tables like WhatLinksHere are built. It's only the page itself which looks different. PrimeHunter (talk) 07:03, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hm. Ok, I did it. Thank you for answer. Αλέξης ο Μέγας (📢 | 📥) 08:31, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

Clarification of DEFAULTSORT usage
So, as I understand it, the DEFAULTSORT template sets the default sort key for an article which is then used for ordering within categories, and that those sort keys do not regard accents as relevant and are also case-insensitive, according to WP:SORTCAT. However, I have found that many articles have a DEFAULTSORT template with a name that is the same as the article title except for capitalization differences (e.g. Computer engineering). What is the purpose of the DEFAULTSORT template in these situations? Or, is this just leftover cruft from previous MediaWiki software as this archive discussion alludes to? If it is just leftover, should these seemingly redundant DEFAULTSORT templates be deleted, as might be inferred from the second paragraph of Template:DEFAULTSORT? Thanks is advance! My page Khamekits
Hello. Could you connect my page Khamekits with russian page Хамекиты please? WikiEditor1234567123 (talk) 17:33, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- I believe I have got that done, along with adding some links and some minor corrections, but as this appears to be a direct word-for-word translation of the ru.wp article, I believe there is also an issue of being sure that is properly attributed to the original author, but at the moment I don't recall exactly how to deal with that. Beeblebrox (talk) 17:54, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- I added a notice on the talk page that I think satisfies the attribution requirements, for the record, in the future a link to the original article should be in the edit summary when creating the page, according to Help:Translation. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:07, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
Harrassment by a Bot
Someone who has a vendetta against my brother posts negative and false information on his wikepedia page. When I go to delete it, it reverts right back. This makes me think there is a "bot" putting it up. How can I handle this? VirtuousJohn (talk) 17:36, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- To directly answer your question: you are not being "harassed" and there is no bot involved. You are removing what appears to be properly sourced content, and Wikipedians are reverting your edits for that simple reason. As to what you do now, you should discuss the matter at Talk:Peter Fitzhugh Brown. You should not be editing an article about your own brother as you have an obvious conflict of interest. Wikipedia works by consensus, not edit warring. Beeblebrox (talk) 17:42, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
new to editing
I've noticed that there is a lot of missing information for women's soccer in general and want to start adding information. I was going to start with adding information about players who have played professionally in the three U.S. professional leagues, since that is where I am most knowledgeable. I created a page for a player that didn't have one. I am not clear about the rules for what qualifies as notable for giving people their own pages. If there aren't sources from like ESPN are something does that mean the page won't be accepted? Woso10 (talk) 17:51, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia! I've left a welcome template on your talk page with some helpful links. Notability of sportspeople is something that has generated a lot of discussion around here, Wikipedia:Notability (sports) has a lot of information on this. Beeblebrox (talk) 17:57, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- Notability criteria for sports people are at WP:NSPORT. One thing which would help when you submit your sandbox draft for review would be to change the bare URLs in your references to more complete citations. - David Biddulph (talk) 17:59, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
Adding football team colors
Hello friends,
I am trying to set up a football team’s colors so that a player’s information box would change colors to match that team, similar to how they do with most NFL and CFL teams.
The page has existed for some time now, but I am unable to figure out how to add their colors to the database (presently, it shows the default gray and black colors when you put in the team name under the ‘current team’ section of a player’s Infobox.
If anyone could provide me with a guide on how to add team colors to the database, that would be much appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Taco098541 (talk • contribs) 18:45, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
Policy differences between wikipedias
As per WP:CXT adding unedited machine translations is prohibited and I know they may be riddled with errors. However, it says that 1) they may be unsourced or poorly sourced and 2) they may not meet notability. Why is this? Is this because other wikipedias can have poorly sourced articles and non-notable subjects? If so, why this inconsistency between wikipedias? 26zhangi (talk) 21:11, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- 26zhangi, different Wikipediasb develop their own policies, so en Wikipedia is likely to have articles which are poorly sourced and about non-notable subjects according to de Wikipedia policies and vice versa. Also policies change and editors sometimes ignore policy, so en and de Wikipedia will have articles which are poorly sourced and about non-notable subjects according to their own policies. Furthermore, I note that you refer to the article (Jared Evan) as 'my page'. If you are Evan, you need to read the Wikipedia:Conflict of interest guideline. - The article will not be 'reverted to the way it was'. It wasn't compliant with Wikipedia policy. It still isn't. It appears that this has gone unnoticed previously, but that isn't a reason to ignore the obvious issues. Content (all of it) needs to be cited to published independent reliable sources. And it needs to be shown that such sources provide the necessary evidence to meet our notability criteria. Since you are the article subject, you shouldn't be editing it yourself, so instead I suggest you start looking for proper in-depth sourcing, and then list it all on the article talk page. Request for a review
Hi! I don't know if this is allowed here. If not, please let me know and delete the question. So I have just made two requests to edit, which you can find here: Talk:Douglas Cumming. It's not that I am in a hurry, but if possible, can someone look at it and respond to it?
Again, if this is not allowed, please reply and delete it afterward. Thank you. Bmjc98 (talk) 21:23, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- Bjmc98 You may ask, but it's not likely to speed up the process, as everyone who makes an edit request would like it done quickly.
