Proposed deletion |
On this page, the deletion or merging of templates and modules, except as noted below, is discussed. To propose the renaming of a template or templates, use Wikipedia:Requested moves.
How to use this page
What not to propose for discussion here
The majority of deletion and merger proposals concerning pages in the template namespace and module namespace should be listed on this page. However, there are a few exceptions:
- Stub templates
- Stub templates and categories should be listed at Categories for discussion, as these templates are merely containers for their categories, unless the stub template does not come with a category and is being nominated by itself.
- Userboxes
- Userboxes should be listed at Miscellany for deletion, regardless of the namespace in which they reside.
- Speedy deletion candidates
- If the template clearly satisfies a criterion for speedy deletion, tag it with a speedy deletion template. For example, if you wrote the template and request its deletion, tag it with {{Db-author}}.
- Policy or guideline templates
- Templates that are associated with particular Wikipedia policies or guidelines, such as the speedy deletion templates, cannot be listed at TfD separately. They should be discussed on the talk page of the relevant guideline.
- Template redirects
- List at Redirects for discussion.
Reasons to delete a template
- The template violates some part of the template namespace guidelines, and can't be altered to be in compliance.
- The template is redundant to a better-designed template.
- The template is not used, either directly or by template substitution (the latter cannot be concluded from the absence of backlinks), and has no likelihood of being used.
- The template violates a policy such as Neutral point of view or Civility and it can't be fixed through normal editing.
Templates should not be nominated if the issue can be fixed by normal editing. Instead, you should edit the template to fix its problems. If the template is complex and you don't know how to fix it, WikiProject Templates may be able to help.
Templates for which none of these apply may be deleted by consensus here. If a template is being misused, consider clarifying its documentation to indicate the correct use, or informing those that misuse it, rather than nominating it for deletion. Initiate a discussion on the template talk page if the correct use itself is under debate.
Listing a template
To list a template for deletion or merging, follow this three-step process. The use of Twinkle (explained below) is strongly recommended, as it automates and simplifies these steps. Note that the "Template:" prefix should not be included anywhere when carrying out these steps (unless otherwise specified).
Step | Instructions |
---|---|
I: Tag the template. | Add one of the following codes to the top of the template page:
Note:
Multiple templates: If you are nominating multiple related templates, choose a meaningful title for the discussion (like "American films by decade templates"). Tag every template with Related categories: If including template-populated tracking categories in the TfD nomination, add TemplateStyles pages: The above templates will not work on TemplateStyles pages. Instead, add a CSS comment to the top of the page:
|
II: List the template at TfD. | Follow to edit today's TfD log.
Add this text to the top of the list:
If the template has had previous TfDs, you can add Use an edit summary such as Multiple templates: If this is a deletion proposal involving multiple templates, use the following: {{subst:Tfd2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be deleted. ~~~~}} You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters If this is a merger proposal involving more than two templates, use the following: {{subst:Tfm2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|with=main template (optional)|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be merged. ~~~~}} You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters Related categories: If this is a deletion proposal involving a template and a category populated solely by templates, add this code after the {{subst:Catfd2|category name}} |
III: Notify users. | Please notify the creator of the template nominated (as well as the creator of the target template, if proposing a merger). It is helpful to also notify the main contributors of the template that you are nominating. To find them, look in the page history or talk page of the template. Then, add one of the following:
to the talk pages of the template creator (and the creator of the other template for a merger) and the talk pages of the main contributors. It is also helpful to make any interested WikiProjects aware of the discussion. To do that, make sure the template's talk page is tagged with the banners of any relevant WikiProjects; please consider notifying any of them that do not use Article alerts. Multiple templates: There is no template for notifying an editor about a multiple-template nomination: please write a personal message in these cases. |
Consider adding any templates you nominate for TfD to your watchlist. This will help ensure that the TfD tag is not removed.
After nominating: Notify interested projects and editors
While it is sufficient to list a template for discussion at TfD (see above), nominators and others sometimes want to attract more attention from and participation by informed editors. All such efforts must comply with Wikipedia's guideline against biased canvassing.
To encourage participation by less experienced editors, please avoid Wikipedia-specific abbreviations in the messages you leave about the discussion, link to any relevant policies or guidelines, and link to the TfD discussion page itself. If you are recommending that a template be speedily deleted, please give the criterion that it meets.
WikiProjects are groups of editors that are interested in a particular subject or type of editing. If the article is within the scope of one or more WikiProjects, they may welcome a brief, neutral note on their project's talk page(s) about the TfD. You can use {{Tfdnotice}}
for this.
Tagging the nominated template's talk page with a relevant Wikiproject's banner will result in the template being listed in that project's Article Alerts automatically, if they subscribe to the system. For instance, tagging a template with {{WikiProject Physics}} will list the discussion in Wikipedia:WikiProject Physics/Article alerts.
Notifying substantial contributors to the template
While not required, it is generally considered courteous to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the template and its talkpage that you are nominating for discussion. To find the creator and main contributors, look in the page history or talk page.
At this point, you've done all you need to do as nominator. Sometime after seven days have passed, someone else will either close the discussion or, where needed, "relist" it for another seven days of discussion. (That "someone" may not be you, the nominator.)
Once you have submitted a template here, no further action is necessary on your part. If the nomination is successful it will be added to the Holding Cell until the change is implemented. There is no requirement for nominators to be part of the implementation process, but they are allowed to if they so wish.
Also, consider adding any templates you nominate to your watchlist. This will help ensure that your nomination tag is not mistakenly or deliberately removed.
Twinkle
Twinkle is a convenient tool that can perform many of the posting and notification functions automatically, with fewer errors and missed steps than manual editing. Twinkle does not notify WikiProjects, although many of them have automatic alerts. It is helpful to notify any interested WikiProjects that don't receive alerts, but this has to be done manually.
Discussion
Anyone can join the discussion, but please understand the deletion policy and explain your reasoning.
People will sometimes also recommend subst or subst and delete and similar. This means the template text should be "merged" into the articles that use it. Depending on the content, the template page may then be deleted; if preserving the edit history for attribution is desirable, it may be history-merged with the target article or moved to mainspace and redirected.
Templates are rarely orphaned—that is, removed from pages that transclude them—before the discussion is closed. A list of open discussions eligible for closure can be found at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Old unclosed discussions.
Closing discussion
Administrators should read the closing instructions before closing a nomination. Note that WP:XFDcloser semi-automates this process and ensures all of the appropriate steps are taken.

Propose merging Template:20th Century Studios theatrical animated features with Template:20th Century Animation.
Largely overlapping subject matter. DilatoryRevolution (talk) 06:14, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose: There's no need to merge the two. Template:20th Century Studios theatrical animated features is for all of the theatrical animated movies released by 20th Century Studios. What needs to happen is for all of the other films that were not made by 20th Century Animation (e.g., Garfield: The Movie) need to be removed. ZX2006XZ (talk) 12:04, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
- Do you want to make the edit that you propose? As they stand, the two articles largely overlap.
- One alternative would be to create a third template for 20th Century Animation feature films and nest it into these two.--DilatoryRevolution (talk) 08:18, 8 September 2022 (UTC)

This appears to be unused, and I'm not sure that it ever should be used. This template orders admins to indef the editor after deleting the userpage. The actual policy, at WP:PROMONAME, indicates that it's not just a clearcut delete-and-block situation, and it's the admins, not CSD patrollers, who need to make these decisions. No transclusions; redundant to {{8TeamBracket-PagePlayoff}} (without the line spaghetti). – Pbrks (t • c) 18:06, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
- Keep The AFL and NBL final 8 system require the so called "line spaghetti" as teams cross halves of the draw unlike the page 8 system. These are not redundant templates. Please do not touch the NBL and AFL articles until there is a resolution. RoryK8 (talk) 21:44, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
- I disagree. The text "Winner advances to Preliminary finals" is clear enough that the winning teams advance to the next round. No readers would be confused trying to figure out how Team X made it from Round 2 to Round 3. – Pbrks (t • c) 21:57, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
- Yes they would, they suddenly change halves of the draw, this is a different finals system to the one you have put on all of the AFL pages without any consultation with WP:AFL or any consideration whatsoever. RoryK8 (talk) 22:11, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
- It's less clear than the bracket that was used previously where it showed you which match the week two winners went to. RoryK8 (talk) 22:17, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
- I find the "no transclusions redundant to..." egregious behaviour from a long-time editor who went on an editing spree to then suggest there were not multiple articles using these templates before doing this tfd nomination, without proposing changes to either WP:AFL or WP:RL. Storm machine (talk) 01:38, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
- It's less clear than the bracket that was used previously where it showed you which match the week two winners went to. RoryK8 (talk) 22:17, 5 September 2022 (UTC)

- Keep for now. The rectangular line spaghetti isn't perfect, but neither is the alternative. Diagonal crossovers would be the ideal solution. Even though the templates are redundant (and I agree that they are), that alone shouldn't warrant deletion; and the layout in the AFL template (preliminary finals positioned closer together than semi finals) should still be an option as a matter of style, preference or familiarity, as this is the most common layout used for it in Australia. That said, with some tweaks (options for more than one score in a box like the Page template has, and options to enter your own round names) the AFL-replay and NBL templates could ultimately be made fully redundant and deleted, but that's not yet the case. Aspirex (talk) 22:56, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
- Keep. The {{8TeamBracket-PagePlayoff}} does not have the same utility value that this one has across multiple Australian sports, and deleting the replay variant breaks the unique occurrence in 2010. Storm machine (talk) 23:41, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
- Keep the {{8TeamBracket-AFL}} as it shows how the finals actually work to an outsider. It is much simpler to understand than other templates used for this context. Talsta (talk) 00:18, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
- Keep – the AFL version looks much neater (even if it could be open to a couple of tweaks, which should have been discussed first), and the crossing lines for switching sides of the draw at the preliminary final stage, whether rectangular or diagonal, are far better than "Winner advances...". The nominating editor's behaviour, to remove the transclusions without any discussion and make out that there were never any at all, is disruptive, and better should be expected of a more experienced editor than most of us. 4TheWynne (talk • contribs) 01:59, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
- Keep As per above the AFL version is clearer and more understandable. Also users' behaviour of removing all instances of a template and then claiming "no use" is below the belt. I'll also note that {{8TeamBracket-PagePlayoff}} was created less than two weeks ago (28 August) by Pbrks and this seems to be trying to push use of their template. The correct way for this whole process would be to open a discussion with the relevant projects. --SuperJew (talk) 04:20, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
- I withdraw my nomination - Fair enough, brackets reverted. I did not think there would be such a backlash from replacing this template. I will look into a good way to implement diagonal lines and consult the relevant WP if I indeed have a new proposal (which, in retrospect, I realize I should have done).
- In regards to comments by Storm machine and SuperJew, know that these changes were in good faith, as I believed the bracket was a clear upgrade to the previous one, and I am not trying to "push" my own templates; I am trying to standardize. Cleaning out the seemingly unending duplicate brackets from Category:Tournament bracket templates has been a very long process (as you can imagine, every sport/league has had their own extremely slightly different version version of the same bracket), and I did get carried away on this one. – Pbrks (t • c) 05:25, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
- Keep The AFL and NBL final 8 system, it will cause too much backlash.

Both of these are not templates, but instead a collage of images of the temples. And should be substituted either all articles used or just the mainspace articles the templates are the namesakes of. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 21:53, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

- Query, WikiCleanerMan, From Wikipedia:Templates
Templates are pages that are embedded (transcluded) into other pages to allow for the repetition of information
, There is no rule against having images in templates - it is quite common - so on what grounds do you claim these are not templates? · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 12:59, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
- Just because it was created in template space, it does not mean it should be in template space. Why should these images be collected like this in a single space? Is it for navigational purposes, then if so it should be a navbox. If not for navigation, then is it to display pictures on articles related to the subject? Each image can be better displayed in a gallery section which could be a better use of space. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 17:08, 6 September 2022 (UTC)

- It seems likely that there are more than three Hindu temples in Myanmar, so has potential. Keep unless there is evidence to the contrary. Also per Thebiguglyalien. · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 12:50, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
- Comment Both keep votes fail to address the nomination. This isn't about the potential of the navbox, but if the navbox navigates across a minimum of articles. The rule of thumb of NENAN has been used for countless TFd nominations for navboxes. At the moment there are only three. It's still a small amount to require a navbox. There plenty of templates in Myanmar, but the current number of articles are three. This has nothing to do with the general subject the navbox was created for. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 17:04, 6 September 2022 (UTC)

- Keep I don't see how deletion gains anything - this is the sort of template that could well have more than just the single use. A use case of users displaying them on their userpages would be a reasonable use and not against policy, I don't see any compelling reason that substing and deleting is needed or would really have any benefit. - Keep – A handful of users utilize it, and a fair amount of work went into it. Substituting would add a long list of wiki markup to users' pages, which would look sloppy. Every template that is not used a great deal does not need to be deleted. Wikipedia servers are not running out of space. Deletion wouldn't provide any benefit. - I'm not sure whether to replace {{FCC letter}} with this or convert uses of that to {{cite web}}. I made this in preparation for a likely switch of documents at the Federal Communications Commission. The FCC letter template supports short citations to URLs like http://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/getimportletter_exh.cgi?import_letter_id=69738. These are documents uploaded into an FCC system called CDBS and have a five- or six-digit numeric identifier. This summer, the FCC has been quietly porting these over to their current system, known as LMS. (If you see an [LMS] link in an infobox like at KUGS, it will show links to these documents.) The same document is available in LMS from https://enterpriseefiling.fcc.gov/dataentry/api/download/attachment/fc783d60-ec01-35bd-4c8c-fcd5ec5a9c4d. FCC LMS letter is designed to take that long hex string as a short entry. The FCC has been progressively deprecating or shutting off functions of CDBS such that all new applications in broadcasting go through the LMS system. There are 1,033 transclusions of FCC letter, many in citations (and a significant portion added by me). The end goal would be to see as many of these ported to LMS letter when the FCC decides to take CDBS out of service.I've also been musing about having many of the citations changed to {{Cite web}} instead, which would permit things like IABot to interact with them and richer metadata (right now, FCC letter does not support anything more than a title or a pre-populated title for the "history cards" that are one of the document sets accessed through it). Pinging Jonesey95 for your feedback. Sammi Brie (she/her • t • c) 18:21, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

Per WP:TFD#REASONS, "The template violates a policy such as Neutral point of view" - inclusion on this list appears to be subjective to the creator. My mistake (per below). However, I'm still not sure if Wikipedia should be mirroring this via a template. It's not clear to the reader that this is based on a list that the franchise publishes, and it still seems somewhat arbitrary to have a list like this for one team. OhNoitsJamie Talk 02:57, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

- I don't see how it's any different than other NFL teams having templates that are unique only to themselves. Look at Template:PatriotsAllDynasty, Template:Patriots2010s, Template:Patriots50th just as other examples of unique honors that a NFL team created for its former personnel/players Diddykong1130 (talk) 04:29, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
- Keep - I fail to see how it is "arbitrary" to keep when we have plenty of similar ones for other teams. I also fail to see how a reader is going to assume it's a fan list written up by a Wiki editor. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 13:11, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

I found this template while removing a redlink in a See also section per MOS:SEEALSO. I went through all the transclusions and the majority were also in the See also section. Some were also on articles that had since been created, so I changed those to normal wikilinks. This leaves six left in article space. Judging from the comments in Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2012_October_31#Template:Req this TFD and the lack of use in the last 10 years, I don't believe anyone is actually using this today. - Isn't that just because people copy the format of other requests on the page. No one is actually making any use of the template's supposed function. It is not used at all on other Requested article subpages. MB 15:33, 3 September 2022 (UTC)

Template:DSLR cameras with movie mode
- Template:DSLR cameras with movie mode (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
At a minimum, this needs to be renamed - I haven't counted, but I'm reasonably sure that at least half of the bodies listed aren't even DSLRs in the first place. Categorization into "High-end", "Mid-range" and "Entry-level" is not based on any consistent criteria as far as I can tell (and even if it were, WP:OR). I couldn't name a single camera that came out in the last few years and didn't have some kind of video mode, awful or otherwise, so any right to exist this template may have had back in 2009 is long gone. Redundant to {{6TeamBracket}} –Aidan721 (talk) 22:57, 2 September 2022 (UTC)
- This was replaced to the aforementioned template as an "improvement". Style wise though, the template under deletion hides the 2nd game of the quarterfinals/first round, while the replacement uses dashes. I would've preferred hiding it as that looks to be a cleaner look that having random dashes. If that feature is done here, I have no problems deleting this. Howard the Duck (talk) 00:18, 3 September 2022 (UTC)
- It's sorta-related template, {{4TeamBracket-RP}} deals with this better. See, for example, UAAP Season 84 men's basketball tournament#Bracket (hidden), NCAA Season 97 seniors' basketball tournament#Bracket (with dashes, and somewhat clumsier explanation to the tournament format, without links to the proper sections.) This also used the "universal" word for championship round of a competition "Final", a term rarely used in the Philippines unless you're a pompous dude whose parents own large estates, while the term "Finals'" or "Grand Finals" (non-sports competitions) are the ones that are used. Basically, only The Lord of the Rings is the true "winner" out of this list. For every year except 2001, the AFI lists alphabetically the 10 best films of the year, meaning that the movie that is on top of the list is not the only winner, but one of the ten. I could think of three ways to go next: either rebuild the template from scratch to list all 10 winners for each year, replace this with a category tree, or walk away from it all. — Ceso femmuin mbolgaig mbung, mellohi! Consistency is fine, but why merge into Template:Infobox baseball team and not Template:Infobox MLB? Curious about that rationale.
I still would prefer merging into the MLB infobox rather than the proposed baseball team infobox. Rgrds. --Bison X (talk) 20:00, 6 August 2022 (UTC)- Currently, only current MLB teams use {{Infobox MLB}}, so former MLB teams like Montreal Expos and Brooklyn Dodgers use {{Infobox baseball team}}. I think further down the road the two templates could and should align closer, but right now that's how the two are used. So even if we were to grant Negro league teams "Major league" status, they would still resort to using {{Infobox baseball team}} per above reasoning for now. –Aidan721 (talk) 23:49, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose The Negro Leagues are different from any other baseball league as are their teams. Hence why there is a separate box for MLB teams and one for the Negro Leagues. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 21:27, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
- Actually, it's just an infobox template & no reader would know any difference. It's just a matter of formatting & appropriate parameters can be adjusted to handle a Negro league franchise. In my case, I just prefer the formatting of the MLB infobox over the proposed baseball team infobox. Rgrds. --Bison X (talk) 02:04, 7 August 2022 (UTC)

- Support The most important aspect of infobox mergers in my opion are if they are implementable without losses and if there will be benefits from switching over. In this case it seems clear that both of these are the case. Looking at {{Infobox Negro League franchise}} it's fields are very limited with a bunch of the ones in {{Infobox baseball team}} being potentially relevant for Negro League teams and all the ones in the Negro League infobox being quite easy to convert over. It also looks like {{Infobox baseball team}} is preferable over {{infobox MLB}} as this template is much more widely used and merging there wouldn't be consistent with that templates current uses. --Trialpears (talk) 16:56, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
