Lua Error when using Rail color box template for a specific rail line
Whenever I try to use the Rail color box (rcb) template for MTR's Guangzhou-Kowloon line, I return with an error: "attempt to concatenate local 'color' (a nil value). "
{{rcb|MTR|guangzhou-kowloon}}
I've checked Module:Adjacent_stations/MTR and the line does seem to in fact have a color value, as with all the other lines. Yet this specific "Guangzhou-Kowloon" line is the only one causing such an error. As you can see below, this error cannot be replicated on the other lines.
{{rcb|MTR|Island}}
{{rcb|MTR|Disneyland}}

How can one flag that a locked article needs to be edited?
Hi All, I am looking to edit a Wikipedia article that is locked (protected from edits). Not that it is wrong, but rather one of the paragraphs has a lacking point, where it may be misleading if not edited due to its ambiguity. I would like to add to the final sentence and tag a source or two. Many thanks for your help! TheLibyanIntellectual (talk) 10:26, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
- TheLibyanIntellectual, you need to make an edit request, see instructions at Wikipedia:Edit requests, then your request will be added to a list of requests for editors who can edit the article. Requests should be specific, such as Change X to Y; Insert X after/before Y; Remove X. TSventon (talk) 10:33, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

How do I nominate WP:BITASK & WP:BITSE for deletion? It's been inactive for over a decade. GoodDay (talk) 12:58, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
- The simple answer is to MfD, similar to the last time. However, I think you need to ask why deletion would be preferable to just blanking ('archiving') it with a big 'historical' tag. IMO this would, or should, be the number one question at any deletion nomination. -- zzuuzz (talk) 13:19, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
Calendars
Is it correct that even start and end dates in article «Six-Day War» are listed only in Gregorian calendar? 94.25.164.209 (talk) 13:15, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
- This is the English-language Wikipedia. Our manual of style pretty much sticks to the Gregorian calendar, which is in use in all English-speaking countries. --Orange Mike | Talk 13:22, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
- As a general principle, that is not quite correct, Orangemike. See MOS:JG and the paragraph immediately preceding it. From my experience, we generally provide dates in the format used at the time / place of the event as well as a Gregorian conversion. Consider for instance the lead of February revolution, an event that took place in (Gregorian) March.
- For the Six-Day War, I am not sure though. I could not find any information about the calendar historically used in 1967 with a quick search, but it seems to me that (in 2022) Egypt uses only Gregorian while Israel uses a mix of Hebrew and Gregorian. I could see an argument either for inclusion of Hebrew conversions of major dates or for pure Gregorian.
- In any case, I would suggest that when a source uses a given date system, that date is used in-text (with a conversion to Gregorian). TigraanClick here for my talk page ("private" contact) 10:00, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
Stem matching
I was wondering if it could be explained to me how to create keywords similar/related to an article or page name when searching. For example, when searching for the band Motörhead, you do not need to include the umlauted Ö, and can search "Motorhead" or "Motorhead band" instead. I have looked through the Help:Searching page and found the Help:Searching#Under the hood section's topic on Stem matching but it doesn't explain how to perform the action. Any help is appreciated. – HPSR (talk) 14:08, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
- What you're looking for is a redirect: see WP:REDIRECT. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:04, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for the suggestion, however, I believe my question is in regards to the Search string syntax rather than WP:Redirect. – HPSR (talk) 18:53, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
- Editors cannot give input to the search engine. It generally treats o and ö as the same character. Character equivalence classes like this is not the same as stemming. Stemming is to treat different words the same way if they have the same root like cloud/clouds/clouded. Editors can only create redirects. For example, Motorhead is a redirect created at the English Wikipedia. It redirects to Motörhead. Without this redirect, Motorhead would be a broken red link, and a search on "Motorhead" would not go directly to Motörhead but give a list of search results. Motörhead would probably still be the first result. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:49, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
- @PrimeHunter: Apologies for the slight misinterpretation. I have created redirect links, but to sum this up, I created a new article, Stöner, recently and have noticed a further example regarding the issue when you search "Motörhead ban" without completely typing out the word "band", Motörhead still shows up in search results. However, despite providing a redirect link for "Stöner band", the search result is nonexistent in the middle of typing; for example when "Stöner ban" is in the search bar. I believe this has to do with a missing real-time search factor that the former article has and my newly created article does not. Again, sorry if this is confusing but this seems to be a stretch rather than just providing a redirect link. – HPSR (talk) 22:30, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
- You created the redirects a few hours ago. Autocompletion in the search box can have a delay for new pages. I think the data is usually updated once daily. If you type the whole exact title then it doesn't need autocompletion but can see that the page exists. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:07, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
- This makes sense. Thank you kindly for all your help and cooperation. – HPSR (talk) 0:03, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
- The data has been updated. Typing "Stöner ban" or just "Stöner b" now suggests Stöner band. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:40, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

Are there limits on cosmetic edits made by human editors?
Hello!
I read recently in WP:Cosmetic edit and WP:COSMETICBOT that bots are limited in carrying out some cosmetic edits such as fixing links who's title and linktext are identical ([[link|link]]) because they do not change the visual look of the page and can bloat page histories and by extension watchlists. Generally, such edits should only be done in concert with other, more substantive edits.
I prefer to improve Wikipedia from behind the scenes, fixing typos, broken links and so on through the WP:TT/M and WP:CHECKWIKI projects — basically only minor and usually cosmetic edits.
My question is, are these edits considered disruptive when done by a human editor? I quite enjoy doing them but if there is community consensus against them then I'm sure I can find something the community considers more constructive to do.

Red vs Blue/Alerts
On top there's a red number which I thought were alerts, and a blue number which I thought was for notifications. When I hover on either it says Special:Notifications. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a problem? Nuts240 (talk) 04:47, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
- I get
Your alerts
when I hover overand
Your notices
when overas tooltips. Maybe it's a caching issue? Otherwise they both lead to the same Special page if you click
All notifications
. Sometimes if you click on either of them before a page is fully loaded it brings you to that page. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 05:01, 8 August 2022 (UTC) - (edit conflict) @Nuts240: There is no problem. The blue number is officially called notices. Alerts and notices together are called notifications. Special:Notifications shows both but if you click one of the icons at top then only the corresponding type is shown, unless you then click "All notifications" at the bottom. Some users and pages may say "Notifications" about notices alone so there is a little confusion about the terminology. PrimeHunter (talk) 05:06, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
Buck Rogers comic strip reprints
My source is personal experience, since being a fan since age 4, which encouraged me to learn how to read, so that I can read the Sunday comic strips, to buying as many reprints of both daily and Sunday strips as get published.
Your article at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Buck_Rogers_comic_strips is Correct in that Hermes Press beGan to reprint the Buck Rogers dailies and Sunday comic strips. However, since 2014, they have reprinted Nothing further than - 8 Volumes of Daily strips; + a volume with Murphy Anderson dailies; although I pre-paid for this volume, Amazon couldn't just Charge me for it, and Send me the volume. Oh, NO! They had to leave the order Open, perchance to save me a few cents should the price sag. Then I had bad charges on my charge card, and had to get a new credit card account #. So when the Anderson dailies volume Finally came out, Amazon couldn't link to my new account #, so I Never Got this volume. I'd Far rather have paid an Extra 5$ and just gotten the charge posted on my account, and ReCeived the Volume.
- 3 Volumes of Sunday strips; + a thin volume with 3 Murphy Anderson storylines, beginning with "The Search for Impervium" (in which the Unicells wrought havoc).
And so, these 8 years on, No New Buck Rogers reprints. No explanation from Hermes. No indication that another publisher will resume publishing these reprints. I am totally bummed! Bgorby (talk) 05:54, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

Instead, I might say something like "poorly referenced content that has no place in this encyclopedia ". Does that make you feel better? Cullen328 (talk) 06:33, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
- Dazaew26h, I see that you submitted Draft:Skateboard (Jacob Sartorius song) to AFC, a microstub with only one reference, to a lyrics database that is probably a copyright violation. Utterly unacceptable. This raises the question of whether or not you are competent to edit this encyclopedia. What is your explanation for such poor quality work? Help Needed Adding Citation
I have requested a change to a page and using the template sent information. How can I get support making this change? Thank you, Brigid Acuna
Error: Protected edit requests can only be made on the talk page. Dear Editor -
Please make two minor changes:
1) Please change phrasing from:
"Kennedy had no children,[6] but had two step-daughters from Paul's first marriage."[citation needed]
To:
"Diana Kennedy had no children but Paul had two daughters, Moira and Brigid Kennedy.”
2) For this sentence, please add citation:
<ref>“Paul P. Kennedy of Times is Dead.” The New York Times, Obituary/Death notices. 3 February, 1967. “Mr. Kennedy leaves…two daughters, Mrs. Moira Martha Sims [Simms] nee Kennedy, and Miss Brigid Ann Kennedy.”<ref>
Greatly appreciated,
Paul P. Kennedy's granddaughter,
Brigid (Kennedy) Acuna, (Redacted) Brigid (Kennedy) Acuna (talk) 03:10, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

What tag to use when a "fact" is apparently reliably sourced but looks dubious?
See Talk:Lisa_Curry#15_gold_medals?; I have found a claim which is apparently reliably sourced (Australian Sport Hall of Fame claims Lisa Curry has won 15 international gold medals in swimming) but just does not stack up. (Perhaps juniors/seniors medals are included, but then we should clarify). There are a few options suggested at Template:Clarify, but I am unsure: which tag is appropriate in this situation? Adpete (talk) 03:25, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Adpete: use {{dubious}}. lettherebedarklight, 晚安, おやすみなさい, ping me when replying 04:40, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
- @lettherebedarklight thanks. I decided a better solution was to just remove the claim, and replace it with her tally of better known / more prestigious medals. Adpete (talk) 05:06, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank You

AfD Article has copyrighted text, creator claims original authors have granted fair-use permission.
Recently deleted Draft:Oligodon Russelius moved from Draft:Oligodon russelius(tagged speedy) about a recently described species of snake had copyrighed text taken from https://reptile-database.reptarium.cz/species?genus=Oligodon&species=russelius. The creator of the draft Wild Trait (talk) have informed me (via my talk page) that the author(s) of the publication from which the text in question is taken (about the desc. of the species) have provided him the article pdf and granted perms to put it in Wikipedia. What should be done here? upload the pdf to Commons with fair-use license and use the text? Vulpes-bengalensis (talk) 07:17, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Vulpes-bengalensis You might want to ask about this at WP:CP, I don't think you should upload a pdf to Commons even if its licensed appropriately for Commons since that's not really good to mean the text is going to be OK to use. If the text has been appropriately licensed, all that is needed is some way to verify that license and that can typically be done as explained in WP:DCP. However, even if it the text is appropriately licensed, that still doesn't mean Wikipedia should be using it verbatim. The copyirght holder most likely has written the content as they wanted to write it and not as Wikipedia policies and guidelines want Wikipedia articles to be written. So, even if the licensing is acceptable, it will still be preferred for the draft's creator summarize and rewrite things in their own words and appropriately support whatever claims are being made by citations to reliable secondary sources. An acceptable license means the content would not a copyright violation per se, but it doesn't mean Wikipedia has to use the content as written and it doesn't mean things like WP:N, WP:V, WP:NPOV, WP:NOT and WP:OR no longer apply. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:27, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
Instructions for Translation needed
Hi all, I want to translate Wikipedia entries into my native language. Where can I find instructions (or, ideally, a tutorial :-) on how to do the translation? Thanks! White Orchid27 (talk) 08:27, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hi White Orchid27. You can find some information about this at WP:TRANSLATEUS. Wikipedia's licensing requires that all re-uses of article content (including translations of such content) be done in accordance with WP:REUSE. If you're going to translate the article for the purpose of adding it to another langauge Wikipedia project (e.g. French Wikipedia), then it's important to understand that each local Wikipedia project has its own policies and guidelines, and you're going to need to make sure your translation satisfies those policies and guidelines. There might be a lot of similarities between English Wikipedia's policies and guidelines and those of other Wikipedia projects, but there might also be some (perhaps important) differences. So, you might want to find out what these policies and guidelines are first just to make sure you understand what's going to be expected of you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:35, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
