Proposed deletion |
On this page, the deletion or merging of templates and modules, except as noted below, is discussed. To propose the renaming of a template or templates, use Wikipedia:Requested moves.
How to use this page
What not to propose for discussion here
The majority of deletion and merger proposals concerning pages in the template namespace and module namespace should be listed on this page. However, there are a few exceptions:
- Stub templates
- Stub templates and categories should be listed at Categories for discussion, as these templates are merely containers for their categories, unless the stub template does not come with a category and is being nominated by itself.
- Userboxes
- Userboxes should be listed at Miscellany for deletion, regardless of the namespace in which they reside.
- Speedy deletion candidates
- If the template clearly satisfies a criterion for speedy deletion, tag it with a speedy deletion template. For example, if you wrote the template and request its deletion, tag it with {{Db-author}}.
- Policy or guideline templates
- Templates that are associated with particular Wikipedia policies or guidelines, such as the speedy deletion templates, cannot be listed at TfD separately. They should be discussed on the talk page of the relevant guideline.
- Template redirects
- List at Redirects for discussion.
Reasons to delete a template
- The template violates some part of the template namespace guidelines, and can't be altered to be in compliance.
- The template is redundant to a better-designed template.
- The template is not used, either directly or by template substitution (the latter cannot be concluded from the absence of backlinks), and has no likelihood of being used.
- The template violates a policy such as Neutral point of view or Civility and it can't be fixed through normal editing.
Templates should not be nominated if the issue can be fixed by normal editing. Instead, you should edit the template to fix its problems. If the template is complex and you don't know how to fix it, WikiProject Templates may be able to help.
Templates for which none of these apply may be deleted by consensus here. If a template is being misused, consider clarifying its documentation to indicate the correct use, or informing those that misuse it, rather than nominating it for deletion. Initiate a discussion on the template talk page if the correct use itself is under debate.
Listing a template
To list a template for deletion or merging, follow this three-step process. The use of Twinkle (explained below) is strongly recommended, as it automates and simplifies these steps. Note that the "Template:" prefix should not be included anywhere when carrying out these steps (unless otherwise specified).
Step | Instructions |
---|---|
I: Tag the template. | Add one of the following codes to the top of the template page:
Note:
Multiple templates: If you are nominating multiple related templates, choose a meaningful title for the discussion (like "American films by decade templates"). Tag every template with Related categories: If including template-populated tracking categories in the TfD nomination, add TemplateStyles pages: The above templates will not work on TemplateStyles pages. Instead, add a CSS comment to the top of the page:
|
II: List the template at TfD. | Follow to edit today's TfD log.
Add this text to the top of the list:
If the template has had previous TfDs, you can add Use an edit summary such as Multiple templates: If this is a deletion proposal involving multiple templates, use the following: {{subst:Tfd2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be deleted. ~~~~}} You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters If this is a merger proposal involving more than two templates, use the following: {{subst:Tfm2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|with=main template (optional)|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be merged. ~~~~}} You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters Related categories: If this is a deletion proposal involving a template and a category populated solely by templates, add this code after the {{subst:Catfd2|category name}} |
III: Notify users. | Please notify the creator of the template nominated (as well as the creator of the target template, if proposing a merger). It is helpful to also notify the main contributors of the template that you are nominating. To find them, look in the page history or talk page of the template. Then, add one of the following:
to the talk pages of the template creator (and the creator of the other template for a merger) and the talk pages of the main contributors. It is also helpful to make any interested WikiProjects aware of the discussion. To do that, make sure the template's talk page is tagged with the banners of any relevant WikiProjects; please consider notifying any of them that do not use Article alerts. Multiple templates: There is no template for notifying an editor about a multiple-template nomination: please write a personal message in these cases. |
Consider adding any templates you nominate for TfD to your watchlist. This will help ensure that the TfD tag is not removed.
After nominating: Notify interested projects and editors
While it is sufficient to list a template for discussion at TfD (see above), nominators and others sometimes want to attract more attention from and participation by informed editors. All such efforts must comply with Wikipedia's guideline against biased canvassing.
To encourage participation by less experienced editors, please avoid Wikipedia-specific abbreviations in the messages you leave about the discussion, link to any relevant policies or guidelines, and link to the TfD discussion page itself. If you are recommending that a template be speedily deleted, please give the criterion that it meets.
WikiProjects are groups of editors that are interested in a particular subject or type of editing. If the article is within the scope of one or more WikiProjects, they may welcome a brief, neutral note on their project's talk page(s) about the TfD. You can use {{Tfdnotice}}
for this.
Tagging the nominated template's talk page with a relevant Wikiproject's banner will result in the template being listed in that project's Article Alerts automatically, if they subscribe to the system. For instance, tagging a template with {{WikiProject Physics}} will list the discussion in Wikipedia:WikiProject Physics/Article alerts.
Notifying substantial contributors to the template
While not required, it is generally considered courteous to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the template and its talkpage that you are nominating for discussion. To find the creator and main contributors, look in the page history or talk page.
At this point, you've done all you need to do as nominator. Sometime after seven days have passed, someone else will either close the discussion or, where needed, "relist" it for another seven days of discussion. (That "someone" may not be you, the nominator.)
Once you have submitted a template here, no further action is necessary on your part. If the nomination is successful it will be added to the Holding Cell until the change is implemented. There is no requirement for nominators to be part of the implementation process, but they are allowed to if they so wish.
Also, consider adding any templates you nominate to your watchlist. This will help ensure that your nomination tag is not mistakenly or deliberately removed.
Twinkle
Twinkle is a convenient tool that can perform many of the posting and notification functions automatically, with fewer errors and missed steps than manual editing. Twinkle does not notify WikiProjects, although many of them have automatic alerts. It is helpful to notify any interested WikiProjects that don't receive alerts, but this has to be done manually.
Discussion
Anyone can join the discussion, but please understand the deletion policy and explain your reasoning.
People will sometimes also recommend subst or subst and delete and similar. This means the template text should be "merged" into the articles that use it. Depending on the content, the template page may then be deleted; if preserving the edit history for attribution is desirable, it may be history-merged with the target article or moved to mainspace and redirected.
Templates are rarely orphaned—that is, removed from pages that transclude them—before the discussion is closed. A list of open discussions eligible for closure can be found at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Old unclosed discussions.
Closing discussion
Administrators should read the closing instructions before closing a nomination. Note that WP:XFDcloser semi-automates this process and ensures all of the appropriate steps are taken.

None of these navboxes have more than one or two entries, and therefore fail WP:NENAN. Template:Asc
- Template:Asc (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
Previously nominated for deletion earlier this year as an unused template, but was given some time to gain traction. The American Song Contest has now taken place and the template is still not being used. Given the format of the show and the lack of transparency of the process of selecting each state's entry, I don't see a future where "Massachusetts in the American Song Contest", etc. becomes a viable standalone article that would require the use of this template. Grk1011 (talk) 19:54, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
Weak keep;templates are harmless, and if there's a chance it can still be useful (when there are multiple editions of ASC) then no reason to delete it. If ASC stops and the thing is still unused I'd support deleting it. I would also support a merger with Template:Esc. ―Jochem van Hees (talk) 20:49, 26 July 2022 (UTC)- Delete per nomination. Not much has changed since my original nomination. But a merger with Esc could be a better route. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 23:01, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
- I guess I don't see how a merger would be helpful. There doesn't seem to be a future use for x in the American Song Contest. It's a reality tv show by a singular broadcaster that decides everything. Unlike the contests that use {{Esc}}, there are no other parties whose actions are being documented in the offshoot pages. A "state" doesn't perform because state's don't enter; NBC assigns people a state that they can represent based on relatively subjective criteria (if any). If an entrant or song becomes notable on its own, that information would just go to those respective pages. Grk1011 (talk) 13:14, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
- Notability of "state in the American Song Contest" articles is not dependent on whether or not there is a separate organisation responsible for it. It's whether there are enough sources talking about the participation of the state in the American Song Contest through the years. Obviously that is right now not the case, but if this will be a recurring event then it could. ―Jochem van Hees (talk) 01:02, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
- We typically don't preemptively create templates for things that might be useful in the future, especially if it isn't certain. Wouldn't it make sense to delete this now and then add the capability to {{Esc}} if needed when the time comes? Grk1011 (talk) 12:55, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
- Yeah that makes sense too; this would work better as a part of Template:Esc anyway. Delete. ―Jochem van Hees (talk) 16:12, 29 July 2022 (UTC)

All fail basic navigation. All link to one or two articles outside the main team article in the title. The rest are links to articles sections and categories. Links to personnel should not count as those are just articles about former MLB players that have played a role with the team, but not enough to justify keeping the templates because there is no overall connection to the team itself. All either unused or single-use with no plausible other uses. * Pppery * it has begun... 20:41, 16 July 2022 (UTC)
- Delete/Subst the unused and single-use respectively per nomination. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 15:19, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
- Please do not delete, I put a lot of work into creating modules and templates. Will definitely come in handy over time. Yevrowl (talk) 18:34, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- WP:IWORKEDSOHARD is not a valid argument. And where else other than Hiashatar could, for example, Template:HiaShatar diagram possibly be used? * Pppery * it has begun... 19:16, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- I really don't I agree with the "no plausible other uses" part of this. Surely each one could be used to show examples of different situations that can happen in a game, not to mention showing the board at critical points in notable matches.
I would say that any of these with a current transclusion should be an automatic keep, while if any have been sitting around without a use for too long, it might be okay to userfy them, as the main builder/maintainer seems to have future uses in mind.In an ideal world, the {{chess diagram}} template would be more versatile, but until that functionality is built, these kinds of templates are going to be necessary for improving the quality of non-European games' articles. So I'd encourage User:Yevrowl to start getting all of these into article space, and to hit up a place like WT:WikiProject Board and table games for getting proper use of these templates. See below for distinctions. VanIsaac, MPLL contWpWS 19:59, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- Subst and Userfy/Delete all The only transclusion that any of these templates have are in the main pages for the game. There is a potential use for many of these templates, especially the Chu Shogi and Makruk Templates; however, until people start sub-articles on these games, these templates will be siting around doing basically nothing. Techie3 (talk) 03:12, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
- The more I look at these and the related articles, the more I feel like this is not really a cohesive set. Hia Shatar and Makruk are almost identical to chess in terms of the pieces. Frankly, the {{chess diagram}} module already allows all kinds of board sizes, and would only need to add checkers pieces (which it's criminal it doesn't already have) to be able to diagram Makruk. And it looks like a single piece would be needed for Hia Shatar as well. So with a quick update to the chess diagram module, those templates could be ported to that, and the underlying modules ONLY could be deleted or userfied only after chess diagram module is updated. I don't know enough about Dou Shou Qi to say one way or another whether there's much utility to keeping it. But given the haphazard grouping of all these nominations I'd be hesitant to do any of that outside Yevrowl saying it's no longer needed. The Euroshogi, Pocket Shogi and Chu Shogi modules should probably be condensed to a single module and in the process port {{Shogi diagram}} to it as well. Eurojanggi looks like it's part of a whole other world of Janggi, so I'd suggest not touching that one and encourage Yevrowl to develop it further and build out its functionality to be more universal. VanIsaac, MPLL contWpWS 21:56, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- Question Did you mean to put the Chu shogi board template in this nomination? Techie3 (talk) 02:23, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, I did, and I've now added it. * Pppery * it has begun... 02:28, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
- Delete the unused. For those which are currently used, these are 100% not appropriate to try to put in the text of main space articles. You can sell me on any of the following: modification of an existing module/template to accept values for these, or total removal and subsequent deletion. --Izno (talk) 04:05, 25 July 2022 (UTC)

- comment, it's possible that we could refactor Module:Chessboard or Module:Chessboard mxn to have subpages for types or styles, similar what we have for Module:Sports table, but I (or someone else) would have to work on it. the worst option would be to substitute these templates since it would create an HTML mess. if these are really going to be used only once, then an equally good option would be to convert them into static images. Frietjes (talk) 16:24, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
- after a bit of work, it looks like it's not that hard to replace these with submodules of Module:Chessboard (at least for Hiashatar tested here) so I would say merge these with Module:Chessboard. Frietjes (talk) 17:08, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
- This does not resolve my concern. We still should not have custom code that is used on 1 or 0 articles, regardless of whether it's a standalone module or a submodule. * Pppery * it has begun... 01:14, 29 July 2022 (UTC)

Originally split from Template:The Legend of Heroes by myself but I now believe all the content here can belong there again without issue. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 13:47, 23 July 2022 (UTC)

This deleted in 2020 and recreated in 2021 by (presumably) the same disruptive editor. ★Trekker (talk) 05:18, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- Comment: See 2009 TFD (delete) and 2020 TFD (delete). If this navbox is similar to the previous ones, it is probably eligible for speedy deletion. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:43, 22 July 2022 (UTC)

- Comment I think the recreation was not done in bad faith or in deliberate defiance of the delete outcome, but rather due to misunderstanding the closing statement of the 2020 TfD. Izno said to "delete all but one. No consensus on the last." The phrase "the last" seems to be intended to refer to the Doctor Doom article (which was second on the list), but the recreator misinterpreted this as referring to this template, which was the last on the list of nominated templates. Note that the template recreator recreated only this one, not the other templates deleted in 2020. — Ceso femmuin mbolgaig mbung, mellohi! (投稿) 01:56, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Mellohi!: I disagree, I think it was 100% recreated with the creator knowing it was deleted fairly. I have "interacted" (@Paulharv2: refuses to ever reply on their talkpage) with this person several times and I strongly suspect that they're not only ignoring consensus but were also using Ip's in 2019 to push cruft on navboxes, and possibly still are.★Trekker (talk) 07:04, 29 July 2022 (UTC)

This was nominated for deletion in 2020 and resulted in delete, yet for some reason was not deleted. ★Trekker (talk) 05:18, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
- Comment post-close: I'm pretty sure that this template was explicitly kept in the 2020 discussion. Pinging Izno. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:45, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
