Welcome to the assessment group of WikiProject IRC! This group focuses on assessing the quality of Wikipedia's Internet Relay Chat articles. While much of the work is done in conjunction with the Version 1.0 program for publication of a stable version of Wikipedia, the article ratings are also used within the project itself to aid in recognizing excellent contributions and identifying topics in need of further work.
Category:IRC articles by quality serves as the foundation for an automatically generated worklist. The ratings are done in a distributed fashion through parameters in the {{WikiProject IRC}} project banner. Filling in a rating in the class parameter of the {{WikiProject IRC}} template on the talk page of an article causes the name of that article to be placed in the appropriate subcategory of Category:IRC articles by quality.

Frequently asked questions
- What are the purposes of article assessments?
- The assessment system allows a WikiProject to monitor the quality of articles in its subject areas, and to prioritize work on these articles. The ratings are also used by the Wikipedia 1.0 program to prepare for static releases of Wikipedia content.
- Are these ratings official?
- Not really; these ratings are meant primarily for the internal use of the project, and usually do not imply any official standing within Wikipedia as a whole.
- How can I get an article rated?
- Please list it in the section for assessment requests below.
- Who can assess articles?
- In general, anyone can add— or change— an article's rating. However, the "GA" and "FA" labels should only be used on articles that have been reviewed and are currently designated as good articles or featured articles, respectively. Individual WikiProjects may also have more formal procedures for rating an article, and please note that the WikiProject bears ultimate responsibility for resolving disputes.
- How do I assess an article?
- Consult the quality scale below; once you have chosen the level that seems to be closest to the article, set the class parameter in the WikiProject banner template to the level's name (omitting "Class" from the end). For example, to rate an article as "B-Class", use
|class=B
in the banner. Again, the "FA" and "GA" labels should not be added to articles unless they are currently designated as such. - Someone put a project banner template on an article, but it's not really within the WikiProject's scope. What should I do?
- Because of the large number of articles we deal with, we occasionally make mistakes and add tags to articles that shouldn't have them. If you notice one, feel free to remove the tag, and optionally leave a note on the article's talk page (or directly with the person who tagged the article).
- What if I don't agree with a rating?
- Feel free to change it— within reason— if you think a different rating is justified; in the case of major disputes, the WikiProject as a whole can discuss the issue and come to a consensus as to the best rating. You can also list it in the section for assessment requests below, and someone will take a look at it. Alternately, you can ask any member of the project to rate the article again.
- Aren't the ratings subjective?
- Yes, they are somewhat subjective (see the disclaimers on the importance scale), but it's the best system we've been able to devise. If you have a better idea, please don't hesitate to let us know!
- How may I begin assessing articles?
- Assessment may be done through a variety of ways, but the most efficient is through use of the MetaData article assessment script.
- Why didn't the reviewer leave any comments?
- Unfortunately, due to the volume of articles that need to be assessed, we are unable to leave detailed comments in most cases. If you have particular questions, you might ask the person who assessed the article; they will usually be happy to provide you with their reasoning.
- Where can I get my article reviewed?
- If you desire a review, you may wish to list the article for the peer review process.
If you have any other questions not listed here, please feel free to ask them on the discussion page for this project.

How to rate articles
Any member of WikiProject IRC is invited to rate articles for the project. Unassessed articles can be found in Category:Unassessed IRC articles. An article's assessment is generated using the class and importance parameters of the project template found on article's talk page.
- For example:
Adding {{WikiProject IRC|class=Start|importance=Mid}} produces:
WikiProject IRC | (Rated Start-class, Mid-importance) | ||||||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
The general template without any assessment is: {{WikiProject IRC}}
The most common form for the assessment template is:
- {{WikiProject IRC | class=??? | importance=???}}
The class and importance parameters are detailed in the sections below.
Placing the {{WikiProject IRC}} template on an article's talk page will also add the page to Category:WikiProject IRC articles.
Class parameter
An article's quality assessment is generated from the class parameter in the {{WikiProject IRC}} project banner on its talk page:
- {{WikiProject IRC|class=???}}
The following values may be used for the class parameter to describe the quality of the article:
FA (for featured articles only; adds articles to Category:FA-Class IRC articles) | ![]() |
|
A (adds articles to Category:A-Class IRC articles) | ![]() |
|
GA (for good articles only; adds articles to Category:GA-Class IRC articles) | ![]() |
|
B (adds articles to Category:B-Class IRC articles) | B | |
C (adds articles to Category:C-Class IRC articles) | C | |
Start (adds articles to Category:Start-Class IRC articles) | Start | |
Stub (adds articles to Category:Stub-Class IRC articles) | Stub | |
FL (for featured lists only; adds articles to Category:FL-Class IRC articles) | ![]() |
|
List (adds articles to Category:List-Class IRC articles) | List | |
Current (for articles about current events; adds articles to Category:Current-Class IRC articles) | Current | |
Future (for articles about future events; adds articles to Category:Future-Class IRC articles) | Future |
For pages that are not articles, the following values can also be used for the class parameter:
Book (for Wikipedia books; adds pages to Category:Book-Class IRC articles) | Book | |
Category (for categories; adds pages to Category:Category-Class IRC articles) | Category | |
Disambig (for disambiguation pages; adds pages to Category:Disambig-Class IRC articles) | Disambig | |
File (for files; adds pages to Category:File-Class IRC articles) | File | |
Merge (for redirects of merged articles; adds pages to Category:Merge-Class IRC articles) | Merge | |
Needed (for articles that do not yet exist, but have been identified as subjects that should be covered; adds pages to Category:Needed-Class IRC articles) | Needed | |
Redirect (for redirect pages; adds pages to Category:Redirect-Class IRC articles) | Redirect | |
Portal (for portal pages; adds pages to Category:Portal-Class IRC articles) | Portal | |
Project (for project pages; adds pages to Category:Project-Class IRC articles) | Project | |
Template (for templates; adds pages to Category:Template-Class IRC articles) | Template | |
NA (for any other pages where assessment is unnecessary; adds pages to Category:NA-Class IRC articles) | NA | |
??? (articles for which a valid class has not yet been provided are listed in Category:Unassessed IRC articles) | ??? |
The class parameter should be assigned according to the quality scale below.
Importance parameter
An article's importance assessment is generated from the importance parameter used with to the {{WikiProject IRC}} template:
- {{WikiProject IRC | ... | importance=??? | ...}}
The importance assessment rating places the article into a subcategory of Category:IRC articles by importance.
The following values may be used for the importance parameter:
Top |
High |
Mid |
Low |
NA |
- Top (adds articles to Category:Top-importance IRC articles)
- High (adds articles to Category:High-importance IRC articles)
- Mid (adds articles to Category:Mid-importance IRC articles)
- Low (adds articles to Category:Low-importance IRC articles)
- NA (adds articles to Category:NA-importance IRC articles)
Any article which does not have an importance assessment is automatically classified as Unknown and is added to Category:Unknown-importance IRC articles
The importance parameter is not used if an article's class is set to NA, and may be omitted in those cases.
The importance parameter should be assigned according to the importance scale below.
Other parameters
Other optional parameters may be used with the {{WikiProject IRC}} template. These should be left blank or omitted if not needed.
- {{WikiProject IRC | ... | attention=??? | ...}}
- Answer yes if the article needs immediate attention. This parameter places articles into Category:IRC articles needing attention. Use this parameter only if another parameter below does not cover the need for attention.
- {{WikiProject IRC | ... | needs-infobox=??? | ...}}
- Answer yes if the article needs an infobox. This parameter places articles into Category:IRC articles without infoboxes.
- {{WikiProject IRC | ... | needs-image=??? | ...}}
- Answer yes if the article needs an image such as a screenshot, logo, etc. This parameter places articles into Category:IRC articles needing images.
- {{WikiProject IRC | ... | auto=??? | ...}}
- Projects which use bots to automatically categorize articles as stubs, if they include a stub template, can have the bot add |auto=yes to the project banner, which triggers the display of a small notice that the article was tagged by a bot rather than a human. This parameter places articles into Category:Automatically assessed IRC articles.
It is also possible to leave assessment-related comments on a "Comments" subpage of a talk page. If comments are left on the "Comments" subpage, the article is placed into Category:IRC articles with comments.
Quality scale
This table is transcluded here, and is identical to the one at Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Assessment.
Importance scale
This table is transcluded here, and is based on the one at Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Release Version Criteria.
Importance must be regarded as a relative term. If importance values are applied within this project, these only reflect the perceived importance to this project and related work groups. An article judged to be "Top-Class" by one project may only be considered "Mid-Class" by another project. The criteria used for rating article importance are not meant to be an absolute or canonical view of how significant the topic is. Rather, they attempt to gauge the probability of the average Wikipedia reader needing to look up the topic (and thus the immediate need to have a suitably well-written article on it).
Requesting an assessment
If you would like to have an article assessed or if you have made significant changes to an article and would like to have it reassessed, please feel free to add it to the list below. Note: This is only to rate the article on quality - you may or may not receive feedback on the article. If you desire a review, you may wish to use the peer review process. If you assess an article in the list below, please remove it so other editors will not reassess the same article. Thanks!
Articles submitted here will not be rated above B, unless they are already rated as GA by Wikipedia:Good articles/Candidates. The basic method for assigning A-Class assessments is outlined here.

Statistics
The above chart is a compilation of all articles that are tagged with the {{WikiProject IRC}} template, split by quality and importance.
These logs are automatically generated every 3 days; please don't add or edit entries by hand.
Unexpected changes such as downgrading an article or raising it more than two assessment classes at once are shown in bold.
This information is updated by a bot. By default the bot runs once every three days but it can be launched manually if required. (web form)
