Nituparna Rajbongshi is an Indian cartoonist and journalist hailing from Assam.[1][2]
Career
His first cartoon was published in 1997 at the age of 15 in a regional language magazine called Abikal. Started his career in 1997[3] and has not looked back since. [4]That was the beginning of the journey of nituparna who considered cartoons to be the language of the common people. [5]
In 2007, his first solo cartoon exhibition was held at the State Art Gallery in Guwahati, Assam, inaugurated by prominent writer Mamoni Raisom Goswami.[6]Through it, he gained a new experience in cartoons. As a socially dedicated cartoonist, Nituparno also launched his first mobile cartoon exhibition in Assam and the North East in 2007-2008. It covered environmental issues under the supervision of Aranyak and other groups. Exhibitions were also held in Bongaigaon, Pagladiya Kala Bithika, (Nalbari); Bokakhat, (Golaghat), Cotton College(Guwahati),[7] Tihu College (Nalbari) etc.Nituparna's more than 50 cartoons portrayed the contemporary political , economic , and social picture of Assam. Some Cartoons are also based on civic issues, including natural flood,artificial floods,[8] and piling up of garbage which affects residents of city.[9]
In February 2014, his cartoon exhibition entitled “NEOTHANI” was held at the State Art Gallery, Rabindra Bhavan, Assam. About 50 selected cartoons based on contemporary issues were displayed.[10] Nituparna's first cartoon collection AARCHI (The Mirror) was published in 2010 by Jyoti Prakashan,Guwahati. Nituparno also published a collection of poems by six prominent poets of Assam based on his cartoons. Nituparna Rajbongshi's collection “Rekhare Kathare” was published by Rekha Prakashan and inaugurated in December, 2012 in Guwahati.[11]
Nituparna Rajbanshi, an active journalist, was also selected for the GNRC Media Fellowship.[12]His chosen topic was health care for the poor in the North East. In 2013, he was awarded the Jugasankha Journalist Award (Political Category) in 2013 by Jugashankha Newspaper Group.North-East Leadership Award (Cartoon) 2016 was also given to him.[13]
Rajbongshi illustrated a bilingual multimedia guide on Covid-19 named Covid Katha[14][15] containing visual representations.[16] Union health and science and technology minister Harsh Vardhan launched Covid Katha on 4th May,2020.[17][18]
Protest through cartoons
He raised his voice against the Citizenship Amendment Bill by drawing cartoons. As a result He had to face controversy for that and was strongly criticized by social media users.[19][20] [21]
