Proposed deletion |
On this page, the deletion or merging of templates and modules, except as noted below, is discussed. To propose the renaming of a template or templates, use Wikipedia:Requested moves.
How to use this page
What not to propose for discussion here
The majority of deletion and merger proposals concerning pages in the template namespace and module namespace should be listed on this page. However, there are a few exceptions:
- Stub templates
- Stub templates and categories should be listed at Categories for discussion, as these templates are merely containers for their categories, unless the stub template does not come with a category and is being nominated by itself.
- Userboxes
- Userboxes should be listed at Miscellany for deletion, regardless of the namespace in which they reside.
- Speedy deletion candidates
- If the template clearly satisfies a criterion for speedy deletion, tag it with a speedy deletion template. For example, if you wrote the template and request its deletion, tag it with {{Db-author}}.
- Policy or guideline templates
- Templates that are associated with particular Wikipedia policies or guidelines, such as the speedy deletion templates, cannot be listed at TfD separately. They should be discussed on the talk page of the relevant guideline.
- Template redirects
- List at Redirects for discussion.
Reasons to delete a template
- The template violates some part of the template namespace guidelines, and can't be altered to be in compliance.
- The template is redundant to a better-designed template.
- The template is not used, either directly or by template substitution (the latter cannot be concluded from the absence of backlinks), and has no likelihood of being used.
- The template violates a policy such as Neutral point of view or Civility and it can't be fixed through normal editing.
Templates should not be nominated if the issue can be fixed by normal editing. Instead, you should edit the template to fix its problems. If the template is complex and you don't know how to fix it, WikiProject Templates may be able to help.
Templates for which none of these apply may be deleted by consensus here. If a template is being misused, consider clarifying its documentation to indicate the correct use, or informing those that misuse it, rather than nominating it for deletion. Initiate a discussion on the template talk page if the correct use itself is under debate.
Listing a template
To list a template for deletion or merging, follow this three-step process. The use of Twinkle (explained below) is strongly recommended, as it automates and simplifies these steps. Note that the "Template:" prefix should not be included anywhere when carrying out these steps (unless otherwise specified).
Step | Instructions |
---|---|
I: Tag the template. | Add one of the following codes to the top of the template page:
Note:
Multiple templates: If you are nominating multiple related templates, choose a meaningful title for the discussion (like "American films by decade templates"). Tag every template with Related categories: If including template-populated tracking categories in the TfD nomination, add TemplateStyles pages: The above templates will not work on TemplateStyles pages. Instead, add a CSS comment to the top of the page:
|
II: List the template at TfD. | Follow to edit today's TfD log.
Add this text to the top of the list:
If the template has had previous TfDs, you can add Use an edit summary such as Multiple templates: If this is a deletion proposal involving multiple templates, use the following: {{subst:Tfd2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be deleted. ~~~~}} You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters If this is a merger proposal involving more than two templates, use the following: {{subst:Tfm2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|with=main template (optional)|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be merged. ~~~~}} You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters Related categories: If this is a deletion proposal involving a template and a category populated solely by templates, add this code after the {{subst:Catfd2|category name}} |
III: Notify users. | Please notify the creator of the template nominated (as well as the creator of the target template, if proposing a merger). It is helpful to also notify the main contributors of the template that you are nominating. To find them, look in the page history or talk page of the template. Then, add one of the following:
to the talk pages of the template creator (and the creator of the other template for a merger) and the talk pages of the main contributors. It is also helpful to make any interested WikiProjects aware of the discussion. To do that, make sure the template's talk page is tagged with the banners of any relevant WikiProjects; please consider notifying any of them that do not use Article alerts. Multiple templates: There is no template for notifying an editor about a multiple-template nomination: please write a personal message in these cases. |
Consider adding any templates you nominate for TfD to your watchlist. This will help ensure that the TfD tag is not removed.
After nominating: Notify interested projects and editors
While it is sufficient to list a template for discussion at TfD (see above), nominators and others sometimes want to attract more attention from and participation by informed editors. All such efforts must comply with Wikipedia's guideline against biased canvassing.
To encourage participation by less experienced editors, please avoid Wikipedia-specific abbreviations in the messages you leave about the discussion, link to any relevant policies or guidelines, and link to the TfD discussion page itself. If you are recommending that a template be speedily deleted, please give the criterion that it meets.
WikiProjects are groups of editors that are interested in a particular subject or type of editing. If the article is within the scope of one or more WikiProjects, they may welcome a brief, neutral note on their project's talk page(s) about the TfD. You can use {{Tfdnotice}}
for this.
Tagging the nominated template's talk page with a relevant Wikiproject's banner will result in the template being listed in that project's Article Alerts automatically, if they subscribe to the system. For instance, tagging a template with {{WikiProject Physics}} will list the discussion in Wikipedia:WikiProject Physics/Article alerts.
Notifying substantial contributors to the template
While not required, it is generally considered courteous to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the template and its talkpage that you are nominating for discussion. To find the creator and main contributors, look in the page history or talk page.
At this point, you've done all you need to do as nominator. Sometime after seven days have passed, someone else will either close the discussion or, where needed, "relist" it for another seven days of discussion. (That "someone" may not be you, the nominator.)
Once you have submitted a template here, no further action is necessary on your part. If the nomination is successful it will be added to the Holding Cell until the change is implemented. There is no requirement for nominators to be part of the implementation process, but they are allowed to if they so wish.
Also, consider adding any templates you nominate to your watchlist. This will help ensure that your nomination tag is not mistakenly or deliberately removed.
Twinkle
Twinkle is a convenient tool that can perform many of the posting and notification functions automatically, with fewer errors and missed steps than manual editing. Twinkle does not notify WikiProjects, although many of them have automatic alerts. It is helpful to notify any interested WikiProjects that don't receive alerts, but this has to be done manually.
Discussion
Anyone can join the discussion, but please understand the deletion policy and explain your reasoning.
People will sometimes also recommend subst or subst and delete and similar. This means the template text should be "merged" into the articles that use it. Depending on the content, the template page may then be deleted; if preserving the edit history for attribution is desirable, it may be history-merged with the target article or moved to mainspace and redirected.
Templates are rarely orphaned—that is, removed from pages that transclude them—before the discussion is closed. A list of open discussions eligible for closure can be found at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Old unclosed discussions.
Closing discussion
Administrators should read the closing instructions before closing a nomination. Note that WP:XFDCloser semi-automates this process and ensures all of the appropriate steps are taken.

- Module:Dssplit (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
Propose merging Template:Double strikethrough/backend with Module:Dssplit.
Template:Double strikethrough/backend is only used by the module. In general, if there already is a module, then the entire code should be there and not split between module and templates. Gonnym (talk) 06:53, 4 July 2022 (UTC)
- Delete both without merging as part of a walled garden of unused templates created by the same person who does not appear to be here to build an encyclopedia. * Pppery * it has begun... 16:20, 4 July 2022 (UTC)
- Move Template:Double strikethrough/backend to Template:Double strikethrough, Delete the module. The current setup of a template invoking a module which expands a sub-template is daft and unnecessarily complex - just use the template directly. I don't think the "added functionality" in the module of redacting url's is a good idea - a double strikethrough template should just strike through the text, it shouldn't have extra functionality as it is more likely to confuse than help. 163.1.15.238 (talk) 18:01, 4 July 2022 (UTC)

- Delete both without merging per Pppery. Proliferating templates or modules should only be done with a good reason related to improving the encyclopedia. There is no reason for these. Johnuniq (talk) 07:54, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
- I have no issue with a delete both outcome. I didn't nominate the module for deletion out of the benefit of the doubt that it has use, but seeing as how the other related modules created by the same editor (Module:RedactURL and Module:Qssplit) are at TfD, it seems the community does not find these useful. - I don't see what there is to merge, this is a "pass through" wrapper that sets the various categories needed for a themed area. Per WP:TEMPLATECAT, having the infobox set the categories may not be the best solution. I could see removing all the automatic categorization from Template:Infobox amusement park, but until that happens, I don't see a better solution for keeping themed areas out of the amusement park categories. So for now, I think keeping the wrapper is the best solution. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 12:43, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

Template:Hasan ibn Ali
- Template:Hasan ibn Ali (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
Template links to only six articles, two of whom (Family tree of Ali and First Fitna), include scant info about Hasan. The other four (Twelve Imams, Event of Mubahala, Fourteen Infallibles and Ahl al-Kisa just include Hasan's name and nothing else. The template is just used on two articles (one is Hasan ibn Ali itself). The template was already deleted in a discussion of 5 November 2020. - Comment User:RegentsPark, should this nomination be removed since the nom is a sock or should it move forward? --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 01:40, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- I'll leave it to content editors in this area to decide whether this should be deleted or not. Per WP:SOCKSTRIKE anyone can remove this (since they're appear to be no comments on it) or decide to let the discussion proceed.--RegentsPark (comment) 15:25, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- Keep – This is very similar to {{Abu Bakr Abdullah}}, {{Umar}}, {{Uthman}}, {{Ali}}, etc.: a sidebar-type template on an important early Muslim figure (Hasan ibn Ali is the third most important figure in Shia Islam after Muhammad and Ali). None of these templates are incredibly useful in my view, but as long as they are actually used in articles there seems to be no reason to delete them (better to leave the decision on whether to use them to local consensus or to something like WT:ISLAM). Also note that the OP here is a LTA who regularly pushes anti-Shia POV. ☿ Apaugasma (talk ☉) 17:04, 4 July 2022 (UTC)

- Template:Infobox baseball team (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
Propose merging Template:Infobox Negro League franchise with Template:Infobox baseball team.
No reason for Negro league teams to have a separate infobox than other baseball teams. Will help with consistency of infoboxes on baseball team pages. –Aidan721 (talk) 01:58, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- I would strongly agree, this template is very restricted on information options. Consistency in infoboxes would provide consistent information and a uniform look for all baseball team pages.Skilgis1900 (talk) 02:31, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose Template:Infobox baseball team was recently substantially redesigned by the merge nominator with no discussion or input from members of WikiProject Baseball (see this discussion about what changes were made). The changes are glaring and seem out-of-step with other baseball templates and formatting. For these reasons, Template:Infobox Negro League franchise should not be merged with Template:Infobox baseball team. I agree that consistency is good, but the current state of Template:Infobox baseball team is not, and merger would not be beneficial to Negro team articles or their readers. NatureBoyMD (talk) 13:09, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose. Great points, thanks for the information on the recent redesign. Collaboration on infoboxes is essential and the current Template:Infobox baseball team redesign deserves further input before becoming universal. Skilgis1900 (talk) 13:21, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

- The Negro League & Federal League teams don't belong in Template: Infobox MLB, but could be included in Template:Infobox baseball team. Only the American & National League teams belong in the MLB infobox template. GoodDay (talk) 19:09, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- I suppose it wouldn't hurt to merge with the current, reverted version of the generic baseball team infobox. I could see the possibility of some Negro league teams using the MLB infobox (i.e. those retroactively granted major league status), but that's another discussion. NatureBoyMD (talk) 19:24, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

Template:Born in
- Template:Born in (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
We already have too many birth day templates, with the main ones being Template:Birth date and Template:Birth-date. The fact that this adds an abbreviation for the word "born" is not sufficient in creating a new template. Gonnym (talk) 08:53, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- It's not a birth day template; it is an abbreviation template that happens to work with birth dates. It is also complimentary to the long-standing and much-used {{died-in}} template. The templates you suggest are not a substitute for {{born-in}}'s purpose, which is to visually denote a birth year in situations where a year alone would be otherwise ambiguous. Yes, the abbreviation could be done in other ways, eg, using markup like so d. 1995 ({{abbr|d.|died}} 1995) but on the complex family tree templates these are commonly used on that extra bit of clutter is really unwanted compared to the simplicity of d. 1995 ({{died-in|1995}}). It would make a difficult task even more difficult and I doubt anybody would question the value of {{born-in}} or {{died-in}} over the longer mark-up after creating just a few large family trees.
- Considering your proposal, {{Birth date}}'s documentation suggests not to use it when only the year is given, which is the typical intended case for {{born-in}}, because the template uses microformats. The only alternative then is {{Birth-date}}.
- One solution might be to add an optional parameter to both {{Birth-date}} and {{Death-date}} to add the "b." or "d." abbreviation, respectively. This however presents a problem. It is desirable to keep the ability to allow the {{circa}} template to be used between the abbreviation and the date. This would start to be cumbersome to add to the template. Maybe it should be done. Maybe not. But here's the key thing: {{Birth-date}} and {{Death-date}} are adding semantic meaning to the dates. That's their role. But that's not what {{born-in}} and {{Died-in}} do. They merely add presentation. The crux is that you can do both by combining the templates. For example, d. c. 1995 ({{died-in|{{circa|{{Death-date|1995}}}}}}) does everything desired. It includes both the presentational aspects and the semantics if wanted.
- It'd actually be nice if a new parameter would be added to {{Birth-date}} and {{Death-date}}. But not having {{born-in}} and {{Died-in}} would limit us in our expressive ability unless somebody really wants (and can) extend the other templates to include "b." and "d." along with an optional "c.". - Template:Died in was created only a few months ago and has 49 transclusions so not sure how it is
- Delete. Unless this is used by bots, in my view its much easier to just type in "b. 1234". As the Op states we already have so many templates focused on birth/death dates. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 15:05, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- Delete per nomination. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 15:26, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- Keep As I discussed above, this is not a birth data template but an abbreviation template that happens to work with birth dates. This is a subtle but crucial difference as the proposed birth-date template substitutes do not duplicate the desired functionality yet do extra undesired things related to hCard microformats. The suggested {{Birth date}} template is not intended for year-only dates as per its documentation and so must be removed from consideration. This leaves only the {{Birth-date}} template, whose main purpose is to add hCard info but does not perform the nominated template's function. The nominator's two proposed solutions are both fatally flawed. This could have been discussed and discovered prior to nomination. The other proposed alternative ("b. 1234") by Knowledgekid87 was considered but, as already discussed above, the desired markup is "{{abbr|b.|born}} 1234" so it fails to meet the specifications. Both the abbreviation tag and thin space serve a purpose and are wanted so that proposal must be declined. Jason Quinn (talk) 15:58, 9 July 2022 (UTC)

Huge navbox that is way too large to provide any useful navigation. WP:NAVBOXCREEP and WP:NENAN. See Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Plants/Archive74#Oversized_navigation_template. Mbdfar (talk) 19:37, 10 July 2022 (UTC)

Template:Election Results table
- Template:Election Results table (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
Unused election result table for a specific election. Gonnym (talk) 08:55, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- As explained below this is supposed to be a subst only template. However I'm amending my deletion rational as I still believe it should be deleted. This template is hardcoded to work only for India 2020, as can be seen from the links and references. If this needs updating each year, then the template fails its purpose and the code can just be copy/pasted. If this needs to be edited for every country before it can be used, it again fails is purpose. If this is indeed only for India, then an empty example should be placed in a sub-page of Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian politics somewhere like Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian politics/Election: Article structure so the project group and copy paste it. --Gonnym (talk) 09:31, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- Keep: I created it. This template is used to substitute blank election results template on all the constituencies of a state after Election. The table fields can then be manually filled. The year and the state field in the table is updated depending on the need and then used. It was not marked for substitution, I have now added the template to mark this clearly and also added usage documentation. Please don't delete this useful template that is needed whenever an election is updated in the constituency articles. Also this template is now linked from Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian politics/Constituencies: Article structure and WP:POI pages so it is no longer unused. Venkat TL (talk) 09:12, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- Gonnym, I just added the parameters for the State and year, instead of hardcoding so this template can now be used for any year and for any set of constituency around the world. This template is used from AWB because lets say I want to update for 2022 Gujarat state election, I will need to substitute this on 200-300 pages using AWB. Deleting this useful template is pointless as it will have to be again recreated every time someone wishes to update election data in a set of constituencies. substitution cannot be done from he target location you have suggested. substitution templates are kept if they are useful. --Venkat TL (talk) 09:39, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- As I explained on your talk page, the template is still hardcoded. If you want to use it for your personal use, then just move it to your sub-page but it will take a lot more work than what you've currently did to make it viable for general use. Gonnym (talk) 09:44, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- Please look at the documentation page again. ALL the names in the template can now be substituted. It is made for community use, for anyone who wishes to update a set of constituency article. Please withdraw this nomination. I dont understand what is going to be achieved by deleting this (now) used and clearly usable template, that WILL be used again in future after every few months. - Template:History of Thailand (1973–2001) (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
- Template:History of Thailand since 2001 (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
Similar to the Sri Lanka templates that were deleted on April 12 I nominated. Don't see the need for navboxes for every certain period in Thailand's history. All of these are primarily just clutter for listing every leader and institution that relates to the specific period. But these fall under template creep when there are other templates covering the scope for all the articles under the events section in all three navboxes. Template:History of Thailand navbox can probably cover the scope. But these navbox is broader for its subject matter. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 20:23, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
- Tentative keep. While I would have agreed with deletion for the aforementioned Sri Lanka templates, I don't think they are comparable because the Sri Lanka ones were based on individual years, while these are historical periods corresponding to Wikipedia's coverage of the topic. While I do think that the first two could do with some major redesign as they are currently overlinked and waste too much space, I would defend the last one, which I created, as it assists the reader in navigating between important topics within the topic. While for example the 2013–2014 Thai political crisis may already have a navbox linking to other major protests since 1973, a reader approaching the topic from an interest in contemporary Thai history would be better served by navigational aids to articles that are relevant to the period, e.g. those about the protesters ("People's Democratic Reform Committee"), the prime minister they were protesting against (Yingluck Shinawatra), the election disrupted by the protests (2014 Thai general election), and the coup and junta that followed (2014 Thai coup d'état (admittedly already included in the coups and protests navbox) and National Council for Peace and Order). These are not easily accessible via the category system, and Template:History of Thailand navbox is for navigation between the main articles in the history of Thailand series and not meant for navigation between topics within each period. Also, Template:Rattanakosin Template:Thonburi are missing from this nomination. --Paul_012 (talk) 08:21, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
- I get your point, but why can't the main history navbox and Template:History of Thailand sidebar be enough? At least for larger or more main history of Thailand subjects. Even if these two templates don't link to the articles one is reading, they are normally added due to their relation to the broader history-related subject. I don't see any other templates like this for say Cambodia, U.S., U.K. And there should be consistency with these types of navboxes. If the history of one country is going to be covered in this way, then the same should apply to all other nations as well. For Template:Rattanakosin and Template:Thonburi, I wasn't aware until your post. But I think they qualify for deletion for the same reason. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 20:21, 10 July 2022 (UTC)

Dijk en Waard has no flag of its own (yet). This template requires a flag image, though, but a placeholder flag does not fit, nor the province or country flag in my opinion. Better to delete it and recreate when it has a flag of its own. Thayts ••• 12:59, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
- Keep. There are many Country data templates like this, some with placeholder flags like this one and Template:Country data Maashorst just below this entry. Some of them even have flags, but they are non-free and cannot be used in the CD templates. Most of them fly the flag of their countries, provinces and so on. Does Dijk en Waard fly no flag? or does it fly the flags of its province, North Holland, and its nation, the Netherlands? Either or both of those flags, & respectively, can be used as aliases/variants for Dijk en Waard. I think we should be improving these, not deleting them. P.I. - As far as I know, these templates are meant to show the flag of the subject itself. In this case, the municipality simply has no flag and there are more municipalities in the Netherlands without one. They may fly the flag of the province or country, but that doesn't make it their flag. In my opinion, putting the province flag as the main flag is not an improvement. A flag-alias-xxx parameter should be used for this, at most. To prevent a placeholder with a question mark being displayed at Municipalities of the Netherlands without using a flag that is common for more municipalities in that list (like the province flag), I put a blank placeholder as I actually also did with Template:Country data Dijk en Waard. However, this is of course also not the real flag, so the best compromise would be to delete the template and let the flag templates handle the missing template (as they already do). I think that the improvement that should be made is to allow the country data to provide no flag at all, nor a placeholder with a question mark, and have the flag templates properly handle a missing flag too. Thayts ••• 07:53, 10 July 2022 (UTC)

- What I already take issue with is known. I also take issue with your statement, "They may fly the flag of the province or country, but that doesn't make it their flag." My city has no flag; however, there is a state flag and a national flag, both of which my city flies. They are my flags. I flew my national flag from my home on a recent holiday that honored my country's deceased soldiers. It is my flag. Just as my state flag and national flag are also the flags my city flies and are our flags, the flags of a province and country are most assuredly their flags. P.I. - A different notion of ownership. Let me put it this way: the municipality has not been assigned a flag representing itself and only itself. Let's stop this word game. Thayts ••• 22:30, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
- I think there is where you go wrong. If it's a game of words, then "ownership" is a loser. I don't "own" my national and state flags. It's a matter of being proud of my country's origins, proud of the hundreds of years of progress, and therefore proud of the symbols of my nation and state, the flags, the seals, even the state birds. Are you saying that you think the people of Maashorst and Dijk en Waard are not proud of their national and provincial flags? Because that is exactly what you sound like. These CD templates should fly both flags: that of their provinces and that of the Netherlands. I don't know, Thayts, maybe it's my Dutch ancestry getting in the way. If I were you, I'd withdraw both of these deletion suggestions and allow the CD templates to fly the flags. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'r there 02:00, 11 July 2022 (UTC)
- Again, let's not do a word game. This has nothing to do with pride, that is what you make of it (you sound very American by the way). I'm just trying to have these templates be used the way they are supposed to be used: to store the flag of the subject itself, not of any of its parent divisions. I suppose it also doesn't help that this kind of templates was originally introduced for country data (where one could argue that a country always has a flag representing the whole country) and started being used for subdivisions as well. Thayts ••• 08:52, 11 July 2022 (UTC)
- Word games again. If you truly believe those things, then you're going to be very busy deleting thousands of these templates, because the majority of them are entities that are part of their larger entity, their country/nation. And many of them do not have "their own" flags, but use the flags of their larger entities. When you're done, you'll have a much larger edit count at least. And yes, I'm proud to be an American! Spread the good! P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'r there 01:55, 12 July 2022 (UTC)

- Since it is useful to have a placeholder flag in articles like Municipalities of the Netherlands, where this template is currently used, I think the best answer for subnational entities without flags is to redirect this and similar templates to {{Country data Example}}, which is a template created specifically to display blank flag icons where they are needed. If this place ever adopts a flag, the template page can be converted easily from a redirect back to a real template. – Jonesey95 (talk) 05:38, 12 July 2022 (UTC)

Lets redirect these overly long hatnote to {{further}} and/or {{seealso}}. Currently used for timelines and outlines articles that are self explanatory in their title. Simply no need for an explination of what is being linked. Seem to have a subset of these specialty hat notes for groups of articles being used out of the blue.Moxy- 14:53, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

- Delete. Hatnotes are to be used for disambiguation and navigational purposes, not for giving particularly interesting related articles special prominence in an article. This is laid out in the relevant policy page, WP:Hatnote, I draw particular attention to point 3 of the 5 basic rules
Mention other topics and articles only if there is a reasonable possibility of a reader arriving at the article either by mistake or with another topic in mind.
Looking at the first usage of this template in the list of transclusions, Centimetre–gram–second system of units it is obvious that this is not a valid hatnote and should be removed - no reader searching for "Centimetre–gram–second system of units" or any of the terms that redirect there is actually going to have been intending to end up at Outline of the metric system - the link belongs in the "see also" section, not at the top of the page. There are also some usages of this template in see also sections, however this is against the manual of style, MOS:SEEALSO, which states thatThe section should be a bulleted list
. For the handful of legitimate usages, {{hatnote}} can be used, it doesn't require a standalone template. 163.1.15.238 (talk) 15:57, 8 July 2022 (UTC)- Linking to a chronological guide to a topic is a navigational purpose. The argument you laid out is also directed against {{Further}}, which is a totally valid hatnote to add under relevant section headings. Thrakkx (talk) 21:52, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

- Comment: This looks like a classic case of trying to fix something that "ain’t WP:BROKE". More importantly, the proposed remedy could introduce breakage rather than fix anything. I’ve seen two reasons for deletion: 1. template is unnecessarily redundant with {{See also}}, {{further}} or {{hatnote}} and 2. hatnotes should be concise and the content of these templates are unnecessarily lengthy.
- Regarding redundancy with other templates: MOS:HATNOTE guides
In most cases, hatnotes should be created using a standard hatnote template, [which] permits the form and structure of hatnotes to be changed uniformly across the encyclopedia as needed
. Redirecting these templates to {{hatnote}} reduces the ability to maintain consistency across the encyclopedia as that text is fully supplied in the template call. Neither {{See also}} nor {{Further}} however, can be assured to accurately reflect all the cases where {{For timeline}} and {{For outline}} are used. One use of "For outline" seems to be in the "See also" section of very broad topics such as Database#See also and Epistemology#See also. Engineering#See also however uses {{Main}} for this purpose which, in this application, is arguably a better fit than the proposed redirect targets. The example can be debated of course but then that's the point: redirecting these templates supplants a specific solution with a generic one that could just as likely be a step backwards with no real benefit to the encyclopedia. - Regarding conciseness: although these template use slightly more text than {{See also}} and {{Further}}, readers actually read less of it. The stock text ("For a topical guide"/"For a chronological guide") immediately informs readers what type of content follows regardless of what text is part of the linked title; the reader doesn't even have to read it unless there's more than one topical guide or timeline listed. This approach is more effective — indeed more concise — than requiring readers to read through the entire hatnote. In the proposed redirects, both the uninformitive stock text and the linked title must be read before assessing the relevance of the hatnote. The independence of these templates also represents a significant improvement over lumping "outline" or "timeline" article titles with other linked titles in a single hatnote.
- Regarding redundancy with other templates: MOS:HATNOTE guides
- The only real benefit here seems to be a reduction in the number of templates. While that may have technical benefits, I'm having a really difficult time finding the encyclopedic value of removal. --N8wilson 🔔 20:17, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
- its about space as well. Why do these subset of articles need a hatenote that takes a full line. Why make our redaders scroll more? All these were taken out of the see also template with other pages to its own line as if its the most improtant see also....page after page now have an extra line just for these articles that have always been in dispute.Moxy- 00:45, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
- Why do these hatnotes need to be reduced to a partial line? The miniscule difference in space is not a compelling argument for overriding the decisions of local editors who already selected these templates over the proposed redirection targets. Reducing scroll distance is not a goal of Wikipedia. That just leads me back the assertion that there is nothing to fix by this proposal. --N8wilson 🔔 12:58, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
- They were just added all over....making a new line for just these sub set of articles leading to WP:DUE problems Undue weight can be given in several ways, including but not limited to the depth of detail, the quantity of text, prominence of placement, the juxtaposition of statements, and the use of imagery. - These are being highlighted over the others because timeline and outline articles are in a drastically different format than the default article and list types. Thrakkx (talk) 19:23, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
- For these templates applying WP:NEUTRAL (of which WP:DUE is a part) feels a bit pedantic. Nonetheless, the change in wording from "See also"/"Further information" to "For a topical/chronological guide see" is strictly descriptive and not unduly weighted to any particular point-of-view. It remains neutral. As for relative placement, that is an article-scope decision; the proposed solution to redirect these templates cannot have any influence on prominence. I fail to see how WP:DUE applies here, let alone favors either course of action. --N8wilson 🔔 21:28, 9 July 2022 (UTC)

useless template, simple strike through is perfectly sufficient and this is disruptive and hideous. PRAXIDICAE🌈 22:22, 7 July 2022 (UTC)
- Keep @Praxidicae: The reasoning is this: If you want strike-out part of your own comment, you use single strikethrough. If you want strike-out a spam/invalid comment you use double strikethrough. If you want to strike-out particularly bad spam/vandalism, you use quadruple strikethrough. – Ilovemydoodle (talk) 22:27, 7 July 2022 (UTC)
- No. Just simply no. This isn't an established process and there is absolutely no reason for it. Strikethrough is to indicate various things - if we wanted to make a comment unreadable with a template, it would just be removed. Stop creating useless templates. PRAXIDICAE🌈 22:28, 7 July 2022 (UTC)

Template:Infobox natural region of Germany
- Template:Infobox natural region of Germany (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
Not a standard request but this will make sure this gets more eyes. Propose to convert this template into a always subst template (if this is indeed a template used to convert German language articles) with a new template created with English parameter names. The template's parameters are in German and from past consensus we don't allow for non-English parameter names in articles. While it has only 11 transclusions, I don't see any other template it can be merged with which is why merge wasn't proposed. Gonnym (talk) 12:40, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
- Support the proposal (as the creator of the template) to convert it into a subst, provided it can copy with the parameters from de.wiki. The idea is that editors can import the German template and have it automatically converted into an English one. The only translation task is then to change any data if necessary. This is done elsewhere and is a huge time-saver. Bermicourt (talk) 12:54, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
- If we want to make this a substitution-only template, then we need to decide which infobox we want to replace substituted instances with. Our
{{Infobox natural region}}
redirects to {{Infobox settlement}}; but {{Infobox protected area}} might be more appropriate in some cases. Either way, we don't need a separate new infobox just for a dozen regions of Germany (or any other individual country). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:05, 3 July 2022 (UTC)- Comment. A dozen! There are literally hundreds of natural regions of Germany, the main article only captures the top 3 levels; there are 6 in total. And Britain has 159 national character areas which are similar in concept. Natural regions are nationally and sometimes internationally important from a geographical, geological, biological and economic perspective. So capturing the key information in an infobox seems a worthwhile thing to do. Clearly it doesn't have to be this infobox, but any generic one should take this one into account. Bermicourt (talk) 10:45, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
- I don't think Andy was saying this concept isn't important but saying that there might be another similar infobox which covers this area. As you yourself say, Britain has 159 places like this. Do they use an infobox? If so, which one? Gonnym (talk) 14:22, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Gonnym Having looked at a couple dozen articles for national character areas there doesn't seem to be any standardisation. I've seen {{Infobox landform}}, {{Infobox protected area}} and {{Infobox UK place}}, along with a few national character areas served by specific templates like {{Infobox river}} and {{infobox English county}}. 192.76.8.85 (talk) 19:30, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

The template as it exists is misleading--the Colebrookdale Railroad, a heritage railway, does not and did not serve most of the stations shown, and the actual line was abandoned north of Boyertown long before it came on the scene. I recently created Colebrookdale branch and {{Colebrookdale branch}} to properly cover the history of the infrastructure. Already fulfilled by Category:Films based on the Ramayana. As the creator myself, I now keep wondering, "Why on Earth did I create this?". Since I can't find any other navbox beginning with "Films based on", I think this shouldn't exist. Kailash29792 (talk) 06:38, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
- Keep. Besides speed and ease of navigation, I feel that the way it has been organized according to release date adds some value compared to alphabetical ordering of the category page. If you're seeking similar navboxes as precedent, see {{Batman in film}}, {{X-Men in film}} and {{James Bond in film}}. There appears to have been a botched attempt to incorporate it into Template:Ramayana, so merging instead of outright deletion is an option. Alternatively, convert to list article Ramayana in film or with expanded scope Ramayana in film and television. A basic sortable table (release date, country, language, etc.) will already be of value, and there is potential to flesh out further (see: Middle-earth in film, Tarzan in film, television and other non-print media). -- 2406:3003:2077:1E60:C998:20C6:8CCF:5730 (talk) 08:37, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

- Keep - I intend to use this on a couple of other New Zealand wine region pages, I just haven't quite got around to it yet. I do not want to have to repeat it more than once, and also updating each year's data will update it in all locations. That's what I thought templates were for, one reason anyway. — Jon (talk) 06:31, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

{{Wayback}}
is not nor ever was compatible with {{Webarchive}}
. A substitution will create either breakage or unintended results. If instances of {{wayback}}
get imported from other wikis or old diffs, the correct action is a red error message [missing template] so they are fixed. A lot of work was done to get rid of {{Wayback}}
years ago when {{Webarchive}}
was created, we had 100s of thousands, bringing it back from the dead is a bad idea for a couple reasons. GreenC 03:22, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

- Procedural keep until the end of July. I've mentioned this to CX Zoom on their talk page that eventually the templates will get be sent to TfD. There are currently around 50 of these unused. A full year to transclude a simple table template is way too long, and in the future it would be best to create a template and use it immediately, instead of creating a set and forgetting about them. If this template is kept, and if they are still unused next month I will re-nominate them. Gonnym (talk) 20:09, 5 July 2022 (UTC)

- I have done that because it's much easier to edit them at once. I don't see what barrier you're talking about. They have been edited several times by other accounts and IPs as and when required. I have explicitly added (view/talk/edit) links to the table for that very reason. I did not create them for nothing. The tables I already replaced with the templates sometimes were often way outdated for several months, because it didn't catch anyone's eyes. Plus there were inconsistencies in PVI ratings, incumbency date, and residency across articles. Consolidating the exact same table from across many articles into a single one, helps keep them better updated, and show correct information. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 08:15, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
- But they are not used across many articles. That's the whole problem here. You should not sequester main article content into a template if there is no compelling multiple use case. In fact, both of these templates at TFD are only edited by you, so there is evidence that you are creating a barrier to editing. If they are outdated, simply edit the content in the article. Putting the information into a template does not make it more likely to be updated and in fact would likely have the opposite effect. Axem Titanium (talk) 16:29, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
- I said
as and when required
. There have been no changes in Delaware & Montana's delegation yet. Why would anyone want to edit the template, unless they still believes strongly in 2020 election conspiracies? Well, now, look at Template:Current U.S. representatives from California (11 of 13 edits are other accounts & IPs). Similarly Template:Current U.S. representatives from New York, Template:Current U.S. representatives from Texas, Template:Current U.S. representatives from Nebraska. These states had a change in delegation, because of vacancies and subsequent special election and hence were editedas and when required
by other accounts and IPs. The barrier, or so you claim, is just a very visible "edit" link on the top of table, that has had no visible problem for IPs. As for usage of the template, I've already committed to use them efficiently across articles that share the same template. Give some time man. There are 50 states, and I have a non-WP life too. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 04:38, 7 July 2022 (UTC)- There's no way to know how many edits you've inhibited by hiding article content in a template. What we do know is that they're only transcluded in one article each and should be WP:SUBSTed into those articles. See WP:TMP, article content should not live in the template namespace. Axem Titanium (talk) 20:31, 7 July 2022 (UTC)
- I still ask why would anyone want to edit that more than the edit numbers we've already had? It's perfectly updated, without any input from my side since creation, apart from subtle maintenance work. As for WP:TMP, it doesn't refer to "article content" even once, it clearly says
Templates should not normally be used to store article text
(emphasis added) all the times it approaches anything close to that meaning. Tables aren't text. The information page the blue linked "article text" takes us to doesn't mention anything about tables either. Further, I did say that these are supposed to have 3 transclusions when I reach there. I don't understand what's so difficult for you to understand. As for the current number of transclusions these templates, I already said I need time. Contrary to popular beliefs, I'm not a bot, neither do I know how to build one. When you have to compete with some 3 million students for a few tens of thousands of seats at affordable government colleges, right after you spent entire 23 months at home (not school) because of lockdown, you'd know my burden but you wouldn't. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 20:57, 7 July 2022 (UTC)

Unused rail station wrapper. Gonnym (talk) 07:51, 5 July 2022 (UTC)
- Subst and delete. It doesn't seem worth having a template wrapper to hardcode one parameter, especially one with such a short name – if something similar were done for every rail system in the world, we would rapidly run out of short template names (and also confuse the users who worked on the articles). As such, it would need a longer name (something like {{Kyiv Metro station link}}) to be usable, but that isn't any shorter or clearer than {{station link|Kyiv Metro}}, so there's no real value to having a template here at all.
This is currently unused, but if anyone adds a use while the TfD is in progress, the use should be substed rather than removed. --ais523 20:06, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

Template:Informal mediation
- Template:Informal mediation (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
While this not being used is very likely, the fact that it isn't linked from any page, does not have a talk page and the template's only editor is its creator suggests this is not something the community is using. Gonnym (talk) 07:10, 5 July 2022 (UTC)
- Delete This seems like it would be connected to some "informal mediation" process, but all of those appear to have shut down: it links to Wikipedia:Mediation which in turn links to Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal, Wikipedia:Requests for mediation and Wikipedia:Mediation Committee, all of which are now inactive. So it seems like this is the sort of thing which, if it were to be used, we'd want some sort of community guidelines about how to use it, and reflect those in the template. (With so many failed attempts, it's probably necessary to work out what we're doing wrong before trying again!) We don't have those, so there's nothing to reflect. --ais523 21:15, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
- Oh, I just realised that the current location is Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard, which doesn't need this template. So my reasoning was slightly off, but not the conclusion. --ais523 21:17, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

- That is correct, I am unlikely to use this particular template elsewhere, but I do not know how to make a reusable version of this.
- I do not think templates should always be reusable. This one combines the subpages {{SWASTHA articles}}, {{SWASTHA articles/top}}, and {{SWASTHA articles/list}}, and I do not find it simple to substitute three pages into one. Also if someone wanted to copy this model then I think the multiple pages make this easier for copy and adapt.
- I have other designs for language templates such as on meta:Wiki99/LGBT+ which uses one version, and meta:Module:Wiki99 which is another version I am developing.
- The point of these templates is to have a way to coordinate multilingual cross-wiki projects. Usually Meta is the place for that and maybe it will be in the future, but I think it is okay to have an example in English Wikipedia to experiment with the idea and show it off. These are single-use templates, contravening both H:T, that templates are for repetitive material that might need to show up on a larger number of articles or pages
, and WP:TG, that templates should not normally be used to store article text, as this makes it more difficult to edit the content
. These are the same reasons why Template:Results of the 2022 Australian federal election (House of Representatives) was deleted. Template:Transclusion was similarly deleted, as it was used to justify their existence, as they are used alledegly "to avoid disruption and unnecessary server load" (which were rejected in TfD:Transclusion). This is a relisting of a subset of a list proposed on 19 June, following the closing recommendation that the templates should be nominated in similar groups.
— Guarapiranga ☎ 02:31, 5 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Guarapiranga I randomly selected 3 templates and they each had 3 transclusions. Please explain what your nomination proposes to do with these as they aren't single-use. Gonnym (talk) 04:26, 5 July 2022 (UTC)
- Similarly to what you recommended regarding the Template:Results of the 2022 Australian federal election (House of Representatives), Gonnym, they should be subst'd and deleted, as indeed it was to Results of the 2022 Australian federal election (House of Representatives), and from there section transcluded to the 2022 Australian federal election article. For instance, in the case of Template:World Championships in Athletics medalists in women's 5000 metres, it should be subst'd to the List of World Athletics Championships medalists (women), and from there the section transcluded to the 5000 metres and 5000 metres at the World Athletics Championships articles, so as not to hinder editors's ability to edit the table (with Visual Editor, especially). But you're right, Gonnym, single-use is not exactly what they are. — Guarapiranga ☎ 04:41, 5 July 2022 (UTC)
- Keep The majority (possibly all? I haven't checked all of them) of these templates are used on multiple articles, so substing them would be a net loss. Arguably the articles on which they're used should be restructured; those articles are substantial duplicates of each other at the moment, and at that point it would make sense to subst the template into whatever single article ended up holding the list of medalists. But given that we do have near-duplicate articles at the moment, it's definitely for the best that we have a way to keep them in sync (and section transclusion of one article into another should never be used – it's far too easy to break by accident). So we have to keep the templates until the articles can be restructured. --ais523 17:02, 5 July 2022 (UTC)
section transclusion of one article into another should never be used
That is in stark contradiction to WP:TRANS.

Template:Import-blanktable
- Template:Import-blanktable (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
- Template:Row hover highlight (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
Propose merging Template:Import-blanktable with Template:Row hover highlight.
Both templates serve the same purpose. — Guarapiranga ☎ 21:32, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
- Merge into MediaWiki:Common.css and delete both This is a much more complex situation than it looks – the developers are involved, see T287997. What seems to have happened is that there was useful functionality (with respect to table backgrounds and mouse hover) which was included into the site functionality by mistake, but because it was useful, started being used. The functionality was widely used, and then (because it was an accident rather than intentionally included in the software) ended up breaking at some point, and some people made templates to try to recreate it.
It seems uncontroversial that having highlight-on-hover behaviour is useful for at least some tables – generally speaking, tables that are being used to hold tabular data (as opposed to being used for some other purpose) benefit from it. As such, we either need to merge it into the main "wikitable" CSS class, or else split "wikitable" into two (together with WP:MOS guidelines as to when to use each version). Creating a template to do the same work via TemplateStyles and editing it onto every page indiviually is a clever short-term workaround, but a bad long-term solution to the problem – we'll end up with a range of different methods of row-highlighting tables and it'll be harder to move over to a coherent system once the software starts working again.
It's quite plausible that the situation will be fixed by changes to MediaWiki itself; however, if a short-term solution is desirable before then, it should surely be done via site CSS rather than via editing a template onto every page individually, and thus neither of the templates under discussion should really exist. (It is possible that we'll want "Wikipedia's own" data table CSS class with row highlighting, rather than using one which was incidentally part of MediaWiki, in order to be able to optimise it for usage on an encyclopedia; but in that case, we can do a one-time replacement of the CSS class name on articles using a bot, which has to be better than adding a template to every page and then removing the template again once the CSS is fixed properly.) --ais523 22:55, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
- Let's not
Merge into MediaWiki:Common.css and delete both
. WP:TemplateStyles are sufficient to support whatever is going on with the relevant templates and should always be preferred to Common.css for the general rationale behind TemplateStyles (see prior link) as well as my project to remove Common.css styles. Common.css should be reserved exclusively for modifications to site chrome. The functionality was widely used
is an incorrect assessment. It was used by some 300 pages or so. Widely used would be much more than that. --Izno (talk) 23:44, 19 June 2022 (UTC)- The functionality was used on many more than 300 pages (with many uses being indirect via templates); see Timeshifter's comment at the end of this archived VPT discussion. (There are at least 1000 uses: over 300 direct, over 100 via {{Static row numbers table}}, and over 600 via {{Kommunestyre table}}.) It probably should be used on almost every table on Wikipedia, including the ones that don't currently use it, which is a reason to add it to the global CSS rather than placing it on every page individually. --ais523 23:56, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
It probably should be used on almost every table on Wikipedia
I don't think this is supported solely by the fact that essentially one user has added this class/styles to these 300 some odd pages +- template links. There remains no reason to add this to all tables (allwikitable
tables I presume, for obvious reasons like {{infobox}} opposing its general use), and if you think there is, you may submit the patch to the developers that does so. There remain sufficiently many cases where it should not be employed, so I anticipate it being shot down for that reason alone (because Wikimedians are bad at using tables as tables). This is an excellent use case for TemplateStyles. --Izno (talk) 00:07, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

- Merge, but with full functionality of {{import-blanktable}} per User:ais523. (old:
Do not merge templates.). Currently, the older template (Import-blanktable) written by Krinkle on August 4, 2021 does more. See discussions: Template talk:Row hover highlight/styles.css and Template talk:Import-blanktable. --Timeshifter (talk) 23:14, 19 June 2022 (UTC)- Normally, merging templates implies that we create one template which has the functionality of both of the original templates; the basic question about the merge, therefore, is "are there cases where we'd also want a template that does less, or could all situations where we'd want to use either be able to use an improved template that has the functionality of both?". You might want to recommend a particular functionality for the merged template (e.g. that it's based primarily on {{import-blanktable}}'s code), but as it is, your bolded recommendation and your comment with your reasoning don't match each other. --ais523 23:22, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
- OK. The most advanced tables, in my opinion, are the automatically updated scrolling tables discussed at Help:Table#Scrolling. They have a white background due to {{import-blanktable}}. They are listed at Category:Automatically updated COVID-19 pandemic table templates. They are used, for example, in COVID-19 pandemic by country and territory. Nearly all the other data tables in that article also use {{import-blanktable}}. I have seen those data tables there with and without the white background. They are more readable with the white background, especially the less bright one's monitor brightness setting is set at. I don't think the functionality should be tied to wikitable. --Timeshifter (talk) 04:39, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
- Full functionality also means that the white background works without changing already colored cells or rows. See: User:Timeshifter/Sandbox177. --Timeshifter (talk) 05:21, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

- Clear merge of the templates. These are doing the same thing. My preference would be to support to end up with the title at Template:Row hover highlight. I would not reference

as the above task would have been avoided if we were using our own classes. Secondly, I would generally support restricting row hovers towikitable
class tables (perhaps with some namerow-hover
). --Izno (talk) 23:44, 19 June 2022 (UTC)I would not reference
