The ancient city of Kultobe is the oldest part of Turkestan. It is located on the eastern edge of the modern city, which is the center of pilgrimage tourism and a historical monument of Kazakhstan. But only the archaeological excavations on the Kultobe hill can tell about the most ancient stages. The archaeological discovery of recent years was the architectural complex of the ancient citadel. These are the ruins of a small castle structure dating from the 4th-6th centuries of our era. Also, archaeologists find here the very first architectural structures in Kazakhstan, built in the 2nd century BC. In some sources, this place is called Kultobe Yasy. The name Yasy (as Turkestan was called until the 16th century) first appeared in the middle of the 13th century. due to the trip of the Armenian king Getum to Mongolia through the southern regions of Kazakhstan. The monument is included in the List of Monuments of History and Culture of Kazakhstan and is protected by the state. Since January 2019, on behalf of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Kazakhstan, a large group of archaeologists work here.
