Laurent Tourondel (born 25 December 1966) is a French chef, author and restaurateur, he is best known for the eponymous LT and BLT restaurants in Sag Harbor, Miami, Charlotte, Hong Kong and San Juan and New York restaurants, The Vine and L'Amico.[1][2][3] He appeared in Monkeys and Robots, Hell’s Kitchen, and Iron Chef.[4][5]
Early life and education
Tourondel was born in Auvergne, France.[6] He demonstrated an early interest in food and earned a Certificat d'Aptitude Professionelle de Cuisinier in Saint Vincent Ecole de Cuisine in Montlucon, France.[7][8][9]
Career
Tourondel became chef to the admiral of the French navy.[7] He worked at several restaurants throughout France, then traveled to London, where he cooked at the famed Boodle’s Gentlemen's Club.[10][11]
Tourondel worked with chefs such as Bruno Maximin in Manhattan, Jacques Maximin in France, and Chef de Partie in Moscow.[7] He also became chef de party at the three-star michelin restaurant Relais & Chateau Troisgros.[12] Then he took the post as the executive chef of Potel & Chabot Catering in New York City.[13]
At the world’s famous Caesar’s Palace Hotel in Las Vegas, Tourondel served as an executive chef at Palace Court Restaurant, where Tourondel 1998 Food & Wine Magazine’s 10 Best New Chefs in America.[14]
After gaining a lot of culinary experience, Tourondel opened Cello when he returned to New York City, where received three stars from William Grimes of The New York Times.[15]
Tourondel traveled through South America, Asia, and Africa where he found opportunities to further develop his culinary skills and returned to the United States to venture into the restaurant industry.[16]
Restaurants
In 2005, he opened BLT Fish in New York and received three-star reviews from Frank Bruni in The New York Times.[17]
In 2005, he opened BLT Prime in New York.
In 2006, he opened BLT Burger in New York, Las Vegas, and Hong Kong.
In 2007, he opened BLT Market in New York at the same year Bon Appetit magazine named chef Tourondel as Restaurateur of the Year.[18]
In 2015, he opened The Vine and L’Amico, an American restaurant with Italian influences inspired with his European upbringing located in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood.
In 2016, he opened LT Steak & Seafood in The Betsy South Beach in Miami.
In 2017, he opened The Alley and The Alley Ventanita, a classic Italian Pizzeria and Gelateria.
In 2018, he returned to London and opened Laurent at Café Royal, his first restaurant in Europe.
In 2019, he opened Scusi in Palm Beach Garden, Florida.
In 2020, he opened LT Bar & Grill in Hackensack, New Jersey.
In 2021, he opened Caffeine, an all-day coffee concept, LT Burger West also located in Westhampton, Dune by Laurent Tourondel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Skirt Steak in New York City.[19]
