Re : Low views - recent record
Hey, I just saw your question at the Village Pump about Oct 2019 spike in readership and wanted to give you some info regarding it. I'm an Analyst working in the Product Analytics team and the drop in October readership was one of the things we noticed this month. Since the discussion has been archived, I was told to reach out to you via Talk pages.
In 2019 Sep and Oct there was suspected bot activity that was reported as user pageviews with 'None' referrer. More details and investigation here : https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T239811#5713328
Hope this was helpful! and if you feel it would be useful for others pls feel free to unarchive the thread and provide this info.

- @MKampurath (WMF): Thanks for the info, it's an interesting insight. I've restored the discussion at the VP. I'm glad that you folks on the WMF side are keeping tabs on pageview data
I do wonder what's the purpose of this kind of bot traffic... Daß Wölf 18:27, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
