the mop
Hi, Cwmhiraeth! I have a rather awkward question. I think that some time in the distant future, if i'm still around DYK (which seems likely, but with my adhd you never know), i'd want to seek adminship to help out with queue promotion. I know I'm nowhere close, experience-wise, but is there anything you think i should be doing differently as an editor? Any and all advice is welcome. Thanks in advance! theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (they/them) 04:04, 15 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Theleekycauldron: You are certainly doing a great job at DYK, filling a void that was left after Yoninah's departure. The DYK work is quasi-administrative, and that would be in your favour at an RfA, as would the featured list and good article that you have worked on, plus several articles I have seen at DYK. You always come across as helpful and pleasant. However, I don't know what else you do around the place. Do you take part in AfD discussions (apart from Erynn Chambers)? What about requested moves, new page patrolling, recent changes patrolling, articles for creation, and everything else? Participating in these activities demonstrates that you understand policy. Why don't you take an Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Optional RfA candidate poll to get some other views? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 08:54, 15 October 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for the feedback! I used to take part in pending changes and AfD (my stats on the latter aren't great, but they are what they are), and I'm probably going to go back to those, as well as looking for positions in AfC and new pages. One new thing at a time, though—jumping back into AfD is probably the best choice for now. Definitely going to get advice from the optional candidate poll—thank you so much! theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (they/them) 16:11, 15 October 2021 (UTC)

Good day! Thanks for seeing this copyright violation. I guess this is because the webpage info is cr? - @Lazy Maniik: I think you should ask the administrator who did the protection and the previous deletion, Drmies. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 12:46, 23 October 2021 (UTC)
@Cwmhiraeth: But you are also an administrator, if you remove his Protection then it will be good because no one will ask you questions and give reasons to you (User request),Even if I tell her that she is doing some important work, then I will have to wait for her reply. This is my humble Request to you.Best Regards. ---✨LazyManiik✨ 12:57, 23 October 2021 (UTC)
- It is true that I could remove the protection but admins are not meant to reverse other admins' actions without discussing the matter with them first. Anyway, it is better to ask the original administrator, Drmies, who knows the history of the article and the reasons behind fully protecting it in the first place. QPQ
How long do nominators have to do a QPQ? Template:Did you know nominations/Joe Youssefi was nominated for DYK on October 17 and I reviewed it on October 24, but a QPQ still hasn't been completed. I can't think of any valid excuse to not do one in a timely manner if the nominator has been active on Wikipedia. SL93 (talk) 05:53, 29 October 2021 (UTC)
- @SL93: Well, DYK is a friendly place isn't it (?), so I should suggest pinging the nominator again after say a week, but if after a further week there is still no QPQ, marking the nomination for closure. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:01, 29 October 2021 (UTC)
- In this case, more frustrating than friendly. I just found a 2020 RFC that was marked as resolved about how long someone has to complete a QPQ, but apparently nothing was resolved since nothing was added to even the supplementary guidelines. SL93 (talk) 06:06, 29 October 2021 (UTC)
- It's annoying, but time will probably resolve this instance in one way or another, and I find the best thing to do in such circumstances is to move on to something else. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:17, 29 October 2021 (UTC)

GA promotion within 24 hours of competition close
Hi Cwm
A quick query about the WikiCup rules - I finished all the fixes asked for at my Talk:1998 FIFA World Cup Final/GA1 GA last night before midnight, but the reviewer didn't formally promote it until this morning. Is it still allowed under the 24-hour rule? Cheers — Amakuru (talk) 10:22, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Amakuru: That is debatable, the rules do not make any specific reference to the final round. I suggest you submit it in the normal way pending a decision. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:30, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
- OK thanks, done. I don't think it will make any difference to the placings either way, but worth knowing if it should be included or not anyway. CHeers — Amakuru (talk) 10:34, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Amakuru: Be warned that there was a flurry of last minute activity and the bot stopped processing the submissions four hours before midnight. I'm working on the adjustments needed now. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:38, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
- Indeed, I appear to be in second place right now, but the last-minute changes definitely pushed me back to third, no doubt about that! — Amakuru (talk) 10:48, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
- I'd just like to register my apologies to Amakuru, I was feeling unwell last night and managed to do the review but not the closure, which I enacted pretty much as the first action upon waking this morning. While it might not matter, it would be a pity to deny the points given the circumstances. This is, after all, about the "fun" and not "the rules".... Cwmhiraeth, Let's try for the same basic format - let me know if you want somthing a bit different - in "WikiCup report". Publication will be Sunday November 28 - after the US holiday on Thursday. If you could get me the copy the previous Wednesday the 24th, I'd appreciate it. Though a couple of days later would be ok. Thanks. Smallbones(smalltalk) 19:50, 6 November 2021 (UTC)

quick question
you've got wikipedia's green thumb in a box somewhere, so I've got a question: I'm trying to write an article on Puccinia porri, but I'm not sure where to start on finding sources—where should I look? is there something in the wikipedia library that can help? theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (they/them) 21:46, 19 November 2021 (UTC)
- also, I came across User:Bilorv/Challenges this morning and I thought it'd be interesting to see if you had done a few of the things—i realize I probably should have asked you about that first. I can remove what I put in, if you'd like? theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (they/them) 23:30, 19 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Theleekycauldron: About Puccinia porri, Google produces 44,700 search results so I don't think you will find a problem. Although some journal articles may be useful for the sort of information you will be including, a lot of them are too technical. I use Google Scholar to see what is available. I look forward to seeing your article on DYK.
- I had not heard of Bilorv's challenge before, but I will take a look, as I may qualify for one or two more categories. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:31, 20 November 2021 (UTC)
- thank you so much! I created the article Puccinia allii, and hopefully the reviewer will walk me through any glaring mistakes i've made. thanks for the point in the right direction, it really helped! :) theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (they/them) 08:15, 28 November 2021 (UTC)

Annotated
You created Template:POTD/2021-11-28. It says "The picture is annotated; move the mouse pointer over the image to identify the persons shown." That feature doesn't work for me. When I mouse over one of the faces, or anything else in the picture, it shows the title "A Meeting in the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters", but it doesn't identify the person. Windows 10. I tried Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome, and the problem occurs both places. Art LaPella (talk) 06:29, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Art LaPella: It seems to work here, but doing things with POTD templates is beyond my capabilities. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:39, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- When I move my mouse over that picture, it shows nothing but a hand (a usual icon for something that can be clicked). Beyond my capabilities too. Art LaPella (talk) 06:47, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- We might ask Ravenpuff. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:54, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Art LaPella: Actually, I have explained in the caption that right-clicking the image accesses the annotations. Does that work for you? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:27, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- Morning here. No, right clicking shows a list of 18 browser choices starting with "Open link in new tab", but nothing identifying anyone. Art LaPella (talk) 14:58, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- Same result on Chrome (except the 18 choices became 12). Same on my wife's Windows 10 computer. Art LaPella (talk) 15:09, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- If necessary, I can just remove the mention of it being annotated. @Ravenpuff: Are you able to help? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 20:01, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Cwmhiraeth and Art LaPella: The annotation function seems to be something unique to the Commons file page, and doesn't appear in a thumbnail or the Wikipedia file page. We could perhaps add a link below the blurb to the annotated version (i.e. Commons) or include the link in the blurb itself (I would prefer the former since it makes it more discreet). In any case, right-clicking on the image won't do anything special here. — RAVENPVFF · talk · 00:33, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Ravenpuff:And even the Commons version only works if I wait a few seconds before moving the mouse into the image. It doesn't work if I move the mouse into the image too early and then wait. Art LaPella (talk) 06:39, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Cwmhiraeth and Art LaPella: As suggested above, I've (BOLDly) removed the sentence about right-clicking and added a link to the Commons annotated version. The results of this can be seen here. Feel free to remove or tweak this if desired. — RAVENPVFF · talk · 00:15, 27 November 2021 (UTC)

Sarah Schkeeper
On Sarah Schkeeper, I have checked the sources, looked also for others which would confirm her notability, but was not really successful. [This] is what comes when I search for Schkeeper. Facebook Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest and a patient of the month mention in a therapeutical facility etc. The article that seems to have her mentioned more than once is a 404. The actual author of the article seems to be against, that her personal information is on wikipedia. The personal info is unsourced, but there has been a lot of rollback (also by myself) admin action, so I thought I'd ask what to do? I suggest if he unnotability is confirmed we could do the author a favor and delete the page as wished.:) Paradise Chronicle (talk) 07:16, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
- I found something now, she seems to be an active member of the Richmond Black Widows but Sarah Schkeeper seems to be the only player with an own Wikipedia article so far. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 07:26, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Paradise Chronicle: I think she meets the notability criteria for sportspeople, so even if the references given are rubbish, the article should be retained. I think the policy is that as an encyclopaedia, Wikipedia can include articles on all notable individuals, whether they like it or not. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 07:28, 8 December 2021 (UTC)

Question
Hi, Cw!! Long time, no exchanges and I'm missing that since you've become an admin. Hope all is well. Anyway...I vaguely remember something about adding or not including information in taxoboxes, but I don't recall what consensus agreed to relative to IUCN Red List. Did we agree to not include the status in the taxobox if the species is LC? Atsme 💬 📧 16:56, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Atsme: Indeed, our paths have not crossed for some time. As an admin, I have mostly helped at RFPP, done revision deletion requests and helped at DYK. My blocking rate is about one per month, and those are mostly vandals who continue vandalising after a final warning. I don't remember any discussion about taxoboxes and the IUCN Red List status. Personally I would include the information whatever the status. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:57, 12 December 2021 (UTC)

Happy New Year + WikiCup
Hi Cwmhiraeth
First of all, wishing you and yours a very happy new year and hoping it's a great 2022 for you!
Also excited to see the WikiCup back, not sure if I'll be able to replicate my podium finish from last time, but it's certainly fun to take part. On a technical point, I see you've set up a table at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2021 but wondering if you meant to do that at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2022? Cheers — Amakuru (talk) 11:00, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Amakuru: Happy New Year to you too. I should have set it up for 2022. Would you be able to move it? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:50, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- Sure, no problem. I've rectified it by copying your table over from the 2021 page to the 2022 page and then restoring the final table from the 2021 competition on its page for posterity, since that's what has been done in previous years. Cheers — Amakuru (talk) 12:51, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Amakuru: Thanks. I find moves are very unforgiving, no preview available, and its easy to find you've forgotten the subpages or got the first part of the string wrong. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 14:00, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup + Happy New Year
Hi! I am new to WikiCup, and have few queries:
- Are articles nominated for FA or GA days/months before January 1, but promoted on/after January 1 eligible?
- I might be a little foolish here, but, can I use the GA reviews I am doing for January backlog drive for claiming points in the WikiCup as well. I am presuming the answer to be 'no', but ...
Thanks! and Happy New Year! – Kavyansh.Singh (talk) 15:32, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Barn owl
Would you be able to add cites for the "Synonyms" in the taxonomy box and add a "how" to the sentence "The shape of the tail is a means of distinguishing the barn owl from typical owls when seen in the air."? LittleJerry (talk) 22:58, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

Ineligible Cup submissions
If I'm not mistaken, these ITN submission (on this contestant's page) are ineligible. They were promoted before January 1, and were also merely nominated (and not updated) by the contestant. —Bloom6132 (talk) 01:50, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
- Also applies to the GAR submission. —Bloom6132 (talk) 01:52, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

Regarding the WikiCup
Hey there, Cwh—Chwhm—Chrwm—Chwem—Chemw—Wcmrcw—Cmrwr—Cwmwre—cWmrth—Cthrmr—Chrtmr—Cwmrthr—Mrcthr—Cmthrth—Creatrh—Chrtmt—ah, forget it.
I would ask this at the WikiCup talk page but it's getting pretty cluttered with large discussions. Does this count towards 5 points? Like, it's a super small review, but there's nothing to review. It's a super obscure video game with little commentary written by an experienced editor. I also didn't review it with WikiCup intention, I just did a quid pro quo and then thought, "Oh right. Points!" Panini!🥪 16:57, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Panini!: That will be fine. Claim away. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:58, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
Revdel request: potential libel
See this diff. Named person being described as a paedo. I have reverted for now but it should be expunged.
As a general principle, should there not be a "duty administrator" box for such requests? I suggest that WP has grown too much to depend on readers being able to identify a friendly local admin and hope that they are 'in'. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 10:41, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
- Done. You are probably right about having a duty administrator, but perhaps reporting it at AN would suffice. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:46, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you. I guess I see ANI as the place where a judgement call is required, with possibly some discussion and evidence of 'due process'. Reports like this one, a blatant BLP vio, just need a dispassionate eye to decide "is it obviously true? if yes, RD; if not, advise reference to ANI". I'll leave the idea with you to brew. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 11:04, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
And again (diff). Might be wise to put a temporary IP block for a few days? --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 16:12, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
- Done, and I've protected Almere and Ali B for a week. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:09, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi Cwmhiraeth. I hope this finds you well - and thank you for all the hard work you have been doing on DYK and elsewhere. It is much appreciated. I'm wondering if you can help me. The above article appeared on DYK today, and the bot has attempted to put the DYK tag for that on the article's talk page. However its markup hasn't worked, and the tag does not appear. Please could you sort that for us? Thank you. Storye book (talk) 22:59, 22 January 2022 (UTC)

Wikicup history log
My FA pass at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/It's Elementary: Talking About Gay Issues in School/archive1 didn't appear in the Wikicup log - not sure if you need to know that. Oddly enough, the same article wasn't added to that log when it became a GA in the last Wikicup. SL93 (talk) 14:29, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
- @SL93: I review the submissions when they appear in the log, but do not if they don't appear there. There was a problem with FAs appearing there in last year's contest, but I thought it had been sorted out. Apparently not. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 20:27, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

Hello mistake
I messaged theLeekyCauldron but this may require an admin. I screwed up a DYK and cannot figure how to fix. When I revert, I cannot enter the project a second time, it says already entered.

DYK
Hello Cwmhiraeth I do not know where to go with an issue regarding an article I started. I saw that you are active in DYK and I was hoping you could look at this issue. I had an article at DYK yesterday and someone used a {{WP:G6}} to delete the article and then recreate it. I put a message on the editor's page, and they have ignored the message. I say ignored because I have waited almost a full day and they are active on Wikipedia but not answering my question. Thanks in advance. And thanks for being a part of DYK-it has been fun to participate in the process. Bruxton (talk) 00:01, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Bruxton: I am not the best person to deal with this as I am pretty useless with regards to technical matters. I first thought the deleter had made a mistake and reversed his action, but on further thoughts, I see the article was moved to a new title, and deleting the old page may just have been part of the move process. I see the article now exists and has a DYK tag on its talk page, so what further action do you require? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:19, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply. It is likely an improper use of a speedy deletion. The editor endorses the use of speedy with a banner on their talk page. In my short time here I have made many page moves and none have required a speedy deletion. I have used the G7 tag twice to remove items that I had created. A normal page move does not require a deletion. What I do not like is a deleted page showing up in my articles created and the editor has made no attempt to engage in dialogue after I posted my concern on their talk page. Bruxton (talk) 14:48, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
- Agreed, the move process should not have involved a speedy deletion. As for your articles created record, I'm afraid I do not know what, if anything, can be done. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:45, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
Oregon POTD
Hi Cwmhiraeth
Just curious about this one: Template:POTD/2022-02-14 - where did you get the text from? I can't see the part from "the upper panel represents commerce" onwards anywhere in the linked article, or in the picture description. Following your request to help out, I've been trying to look through a few of them to make sure the texts are cited in the articles, but not sure where to look for this one! Cheers — Amakuru (talk) 10:56, 12 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Amakuru: It comes from the Seal of Oregon. I think it is helpful to the POTD viewer to know what the symbols represent. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 14:06, 12 February 2022 (UTC)
- Oh I see, thanks. Given that some of the text is found in that article, I've added it as a second bolded blurb so that we remain compliant with the guidelines we agreed last year at WP:POTD/G#Writing the blurb. I guess it's a bit unusual to have to targets at a POTD, but since we do it at DYK and OTD already I wouldn't think it too problematic. If you object, we can discuss it further I guess. Cheers and enjoy your weekend. — Amakuru (talk) 15:38, 12 February 2022 (UTC)
- OK, that seems good. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 07:18, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

Horse-fly at WP:URFA/2020
You are invited to URFA/2020, a working group reviewing featured articles promoted between 2004 and 2015. An article that you nominated for FA status, Horse-fly, has been marked as "Satisfactory" by two editors, meaning that they believe the article meets the featured article criteria. Can you check the article and determine if the article meets the FA criteria? If it does, please mark it as "Satisfactory" on WP:URFA/2020B. If you have concerns about the article, we hope that you will fix it up or post your concerns on the article's talk page. If you have any questions, please go to the URFA/2020 talk page or ping me. Thanks for your help and happy editing! Z1720 (talk) 15:16, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for marking horse-fly as satisfactory. I noticed that there are other articles on URFA/2020 that you nominated. Can you also look at some of the other ones and ensure they are also satisfactory? Feel free to post on the URFA/2020 talk page or ping me if you have any questions. Thanks for your help and happy editing! Z1720 (talk) 15:43, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
- They are all on my watch list and I do keep an eye on them, but there's always a tendency to go downhill I suppose. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 20:20, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
- Reviewers at URFA/2020 are always excited when an editor indicates that they watchlist their nominations, as those articles are less likely to have deteriorated. A goal of URFA/2020 is to determine which FAs have been abandoned because their nominator doesn't edit anymore and no one is taking care of them. If you indicate that you are watchlisting your nominations at URFA/2020, it lets future reviews know that they are probably in good shape and also who to ping if there are concerns or questions about the article. Z1720 (talk) 22:11, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

... for this change. I agree it might have been my mistake; apologies for that. On another note, it is amazing how much work needs to be done by an admin while making that final prep-to-queue move! – Kavyansh.Singh (talk) 12:56, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
- Ultimately, the admin is responsible for the accuracy of what appears on the main page, while the prep builder does not have the same responsibilities. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 07:26, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

- The Prayer is on the Main page, finally + new flowers (well, new white, same yellow) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:09, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 March newsletter
And so ends the first round of the WikiCup. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:
Epicgenius, a finalist last year, who led the field with 1906 points, gained from 32 GAs and 19 DYKs, all on the topic of New York buildings.
AryKun, new to the contest, was second with 1588 points, having achieved 2 FAs, 11 GAs and various other submissions, mostly on the subject of birds.
Bloom6132, a WikiCup veteran, was in third place with 682 points, garnered from 51 In the news items and several DYKs.
GhostRiver was close behind with 679 points, gained from achieving 12 GAs, mostly on ice hockey players, and 35 GARs.
Kavyansh.Singh was in fifth place with 551 points, with an FA, a FL, and many reviews.
SounderBruce was next with 454 points, gained from an FA and various other submissions, mostly on United States highways.
Ktin, another WikiCup veteran, was in seventh place with 412 points, mostly gained from In the news items.
These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.
Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Anything that should have been claimed for in Round 1 is no longer eligible for points. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.
Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. I was not the FL nominator, but I did "adopt" the nomination after the nominator requested someone to take over (Special:Diff/1076144460/1076292003). I now have 69.4% authorship in the list ([1]). It has been promoted as a FL. Would it be fine for me to claim points, or would it be against the spirit of the game WikiCup? Thanks! – Kavyansh.Singh (talk) 10:00, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Kavyansh.Singh: It will be fine for you to claim for it as you have done significant work in bringing it to featured list status. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:24, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks! – Kavyansh.Singh (talk) 11:27, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

to answer your comment
You commented out my DYK submission for How Civil Wars Start—I received credit from DYKUpdateBot for the article after I, umm, completely blew up the defunct article and rewrote it from scratch adopted the failed nomination. Does that not count? theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/they) 06:35, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
- Yes it does. It's not apparent from the talk page of the article that you were going to receive a credit for it, although I do agree that the credit was merited. Anyway, I'll comment it in again. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:18, 5 April 2022 (UTC)
WikiCup
Hi, Cwmhiraeth-- I'm afraid I'm just not feeling up to editing as of late, and will have to withdraw from the WikiCup. Not sure how to go about doing it. Could you advise? Thanks, Eddie891 Talk Work 22:56, 10 April 2022 (UTC)
- I'm sorry to hear that and hope things will improve soon. I will mark you as withdrawn. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:05, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
Question for you
Hi, Cw - it's been a while!! Do you think the following tags in the lead are warranted? I need a 3rd opinion from an editor I trust as having a good understanding of tree of life stuff, a bit of common sense relative to genetics, and the differences between ancestral breeds with no documented pedigrees vs recognized modern breeds. I will add that almost every single sentence in the article is cited. The article was promoted to GA back in 2019 by FunkMonk, but it has since been challenged, and I subsequently made substantial updates.
The ancestral crosses of bulldogs and terriers were known by different aliases, such as the Patched Fighting Terrier, Staffordshire Pit-dog, Brindle Bull, and Bull-and-Terrier, which can be confusing relative to the modern Staffordshire Bull Terrier's brief history.[1][verification needed] Those same crosses were also called half-and-halfs and half-breds but were more commonly known as the bull and terrier, which was not a breed but the beginning of several breeds.[2][disputed ]
An article published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS) states that the early history of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier "is identical to the Bull Terrier which was a cross between a Bulldog and a Black and Tan Terrier".[3] [disputed ] It describes the breed as the result of deliberately crossing "a Bull Terrier (itself a mix of a Bulldog and a Black and Tan Terrier) and a smaller terrier (possibly a Manchester Terrier or a White Terrier)."
Thanks in advance! Atsme 💬 📧 23:24, 10 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Atsme: As you say, long time no see. For a start, what article are we discussing here? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:12, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
- Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and Bull and terrier which is directly related. A merge was proposed last year - B&t into SBT. Atsme 💬 📧 08:42, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
- I removed one unnecessary tag. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:41, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you, CW. I would very much appreciate your opinion for validation purposes, (totally not designed to trick you into a collaboration that I know your time won't allow). I'm of the mind that Purebred dogs, formerly a stand alone article that was informally merged into Dog breed, should have remained a standalone article, so I asked another admin to help me with the round-robin move (scered I'd screw something up). Science has brought so much more information to light relative to genetics and ancestral origins that it warrants a stand alone article, IMO. As several of our oldest and largest dog breed registries have opined, there is confusion about the ancestral beginnings of modern purebred dogs, much of which is conflated and taken out of context. The more one digs into the research, the easier it is to see how things are misinterpreted, and taken out of context relative to the era vs modern times. We are also dealing with the occasional Use-mention distinction issues that crop up, and CIR issues that arise when dog breed enthusiasists pick-up a book or two from Pets Mart or Amazon and perpetuate the misinformation cycle. There are also far too many people who rely on visual identification of dogs which explains part of the issues we're facing with BSL. Atsme 💬 📧 23:22, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
- It seems reasonable to have the purebred dogs as a separate article. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:09, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

Ineligible Cup submission
If I'm not mistaken, the Bjarni Tryggvason ITN submission (on this contestant's page) is ineligible. They were correctly credited for nominating the article for ITN, but they did not make a single edit to update the article for ITN (which the article history shows). —Bloom6132 (talk) 05:28, 13 April 2022 (UTC)
- This has happened a couple of times before, with people nominating news items but not editing the article. I usually allow the submission as being within the spirit of the rules, not wanting to discourage people from nominating articles. The points they score this way are not usually important in the overall run of things. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:31, 13 April 2022 (UTC)

What a treat!
It was good to see American paddlefish on the main page today. I was reminded of it by the lovely, hard working Gerda Arendt. It also reminded me of the now-extinct Chinese paddlefish, so I started updating some of the information on that article, and in doing so discovered some contradictory information in the IUCN status. I vaguely recall a discussion about the IUCN Red List in the taxo-box and was hoping your memory was much better than mine, or if such a discussion even existed. The Chinese paddlefish was declared extinct in 2019 (published in 2020) but the IUCN Red List has it listed as Critically Endangered and has not updated their assessment of the species status since 24 October 2009. I'm not sure how the IUCN template is structured and was wondering if it would prove helpful to add a line to include the last assessment date? It seems odd to include the extinct declaration in the lead with an outdated contradictory IUCN Red List status in the infobox. And then I came across this controversial study, and this review article. Your thoughts? Atsme 💬 📧 12:50, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
- I will look at it tomorrow. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:35, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
- I have had a look and think the lead paragraphs deal adequately with its status. One can see why the IUCN would not wish to list it as extinct when a possibility remained that there might be surviving populations. Critically endangered is better under these circumstances. I'm surprised they haven't reassessed it since 2009 however. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:55, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 May newsletter
The second round of the 2022 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 115 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top seven contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 11 featured articles and the 79 good articles achieved in total by contestants.
Our top scorers in round 2 were:
Epicgenius, with 1264 points from 2 featured article, 4 good articles and 18 DYKs. Epicgenius was a finalist last year but has now withdrawn from the contest as he pursues a new career path.
AryKun, with 1172 points from two featured articles, one good article and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews.
Bloom6132, with 605 points from 44 in the news items and 4 DYKs.
Sammi Brie, with 573 points from 8 GAs and 21 DYKs.
Ealdgyth, with 567 points from 11 GAs and 34 good and featured article reviews.
Panini!, with 549 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and several other sources.
Lee Vilenski, with 545 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and a number of reviews.
The rules for featured and good article reviews require the review to be of sufficient length; brief quick fails and very short reviews will generally not be awarded points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. DYK for Distomus variolosus
![]() | On 7 May 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Distomus variolosus, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Distomus variolosus. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Distomus variolosus), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022
Hello Cwmhiraeth,
At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.
Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.
In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 736 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 1034 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.
This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.
If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page.
If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

I don't suppose you see a good way to set this up for POTD? It's one of those things where I'm definitely feeling a lack of knowledge.
