Just wanted to say a massive thanks for your work on the Election results template. Not only is it a big help for getting some consistency in presentation, but the automatic totalling and percentage calculation has helped identify several errors in the tables (both from editors mistranscribing numbers from sources, and mistakes in the sources themselves) by comparing the automatically-calculated totals/percentages with those given in the original tables/sources. This will be a big help in maintaining accuracy! Number 57 22:32, 8 September 2020 (UTC) |

Nomination for deletion of Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary
From my talk page back in september.
Bugger bugger bugger, I saw a map in the transport museum in budapest we went the other week and it had the lat and long but in pretty much a mercator projection. My missus was more interested with the toy trains so I didn't get a chance to take the measures off it. If it's wrong (as it is) it should be deleted but I am still trying to get the measures right. The thing is it's specifically Kingdom of Hungary, but the more atlases (atli? :) I look at the more different lats and longs I get. And anything one does on Hungarian articles is rather contentious, so it is probably really better deleted. Because people whose great grandfathers were part of the Kingdom of Hungary will say no that's Croatia or Slovakia or Slovenia or Yugoslavia or Jugoslavia or The People's Republic of East Kebab. Since Hungarian politics is very contentious and goes on racist grounds in far more than would be allowed in where I come from, this is better off deleted. (Hint: say Treaty of Trianon to a Hungarian and await results.) Si Trew (talk) 09:36, 15 December 2014 (UTC)
![](https://web.archive.org/web/20231009005713im_/https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/de/Hungary-ethnic_groups.jpg/250px-Hungary-ethnic_groups.jpg)
- I never did get round to this. I took the coords off of file at right, which is very high quality but seems to have an odd idea of where 0 longitude is (it suggests it is east of Paris, but that didn't seem to work). As you suggested, I tried to take well-known points at the edges of the map: Fiume, for example, at south-west. I took very good readings after printing out this map at A0 size and using ruler and compass, my trig is quite good, but I could never get it to fit. Si Trew (talk) 06:02, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
- .Oh, Template:Location_map_Kingdom_of_Hungary/test might help you. You see, Fiume's in the right place but Budapest is a bit too far left and the rest are well out. Si Trew (talk) 06:09, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
- That map uses the Paris meridian. It's not a Mercator projection, the lines of latitude aren't quite parallel. Maproom (talk) 20:09, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
- Maproom, thanks for the tip. I have written code for generating coefficients for nonlinear projections if I know the functional form. but, the code requires at least as many reference points as there are coefficients. basically a nonlinear least-squares algorithm. the problem here is that other than the reference markings on the side of the map, it's tough to get reference points in the middle. Frietjes (talk) 21:18, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
- Si Trew, should we just give up on Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary and have it deleted? Frietjes (talk) 21:20, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
- How many do you need in the middle? You get get a reference point near each corner by specifying where the nearest line of (Paris) longitude would cross the nearest line of latitude, and use towns like Szolnok (which Google Earth says is 47°10'N 20°11'E Greenwich) in the middle. Maproom (talk) 21:37, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
- Maproom, now that I look at it again, I think we have enough with the two interior intersection points and the points along the edges. the original question was about the image in Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary which is less clear. for File:Hungary-ethnic_groups.jpg, I think we can make a working location map. thank you again. Frietjes (talk) 21:42, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
- Just a thought, maybe not very coherent at this time of night. Using an ethnographic map as a location map may, as Si Trew pointed out, be contentious. Will it help if instead I upload to Commons this map? It uses a Ferro meridian, which is no worse than Paris, and shows enough towns such as Szolnok for central reference points. Maproom (talk) 22:02, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
- Maproom, that may help. let's see what Si Trew says. my main focus is turning map images into working location maps. I don't really have a strong feeling about the particular map image, so long as it is created with a well-defined projection. Frietjes (talk) 22:06, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
- Just asking out of curiosity – how do you "turn a map image into a location map"? Do you warp it into the Mercator projection that the template requires? Or do you supply the template with a transform function? Maproom (talk) 07:24, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
- Maproom, supply the transformation function. see, for example, module:Location map/data/Canada. if I know the functional form and a sufficient number of reference points, I can numerically solve for the coefficients. Frietjes (talk) 12:40, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you. It's reassuring to see that things are done in such a sensible and comprehensible way. Incidentally – if you ever find a map image at http://maproom.org/ that you could use in Wikipedia, please let me know and I'll put it on Commons. Maproom (talk) 09:46, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

- Thanks for pinging me in on this. I know it was a long time ago. User:Maproom, yes I did guess it was the Paris Meridian all that time ago, but that didn't seem quite to fit either. Since then I took something and with Inkscape made a four-colour map (five if you include Lake Balaton as a fifth colour, blue, but could have been made a fourth colour as those that surround it are all in three other colours, it is just more pleasant to have it in blue but not mathematically necessary) and split out all the layers and borders and so on into separate layers on the SVG. I seem to recall I called it Template:Location Map Hungary2 or something – and I emphasise this is not the Kingdom of Hungary but the modern-day Hungary. All I had left to do was get the text labelling right. Searching for "a new look for an old map" was something roughly want some commenter said, may well have been User:Frietjes here but may not have been (a long time ago, just going from memory: and those exact words are what was printed on the front of the first H C Beck fold-up London Underground Diagram (often called "Map"; Beck himself never called it a map: I have good references for this from publications of the London Transport Museum in woodware) of 1933, so I am probably confusing those words with the same sentiment expressed. This is all such a long time ago, I give as hints for those who can search better than I.
- On the plus side, by pure coincidence (these are not common around here in Budapest) my local pub has a nice 1898ish German (I think) map of Austria-Hungary; certainly pre-Treaty of Trianon. This is a five or six colour map and I am pretty sure it is in German but I am going from memory, I don't think it's in Hungarian. It would be about 40 by 25 inches (1,020 mm × 640 mm) and I daresay somehow I could get it scanned in, in one of the largescale printers in the town (who I happen to be also on good terms with, for various other reasons) or just take four A3 scans and stitch them with photoshop, assuming that my scanner doesn't distort too much. I am on good terms with the landlord as I have given him my British registration plates and various other British pub memorablia, it is that kind of pub, very much a "local", so I can ask to borrow the map (it's framed) or just go in on a quiet afternoon with a straightedge etc and try to get some measures off that. I think it is not the same as the image is here, though quite similar. As a start shall I get the maker etc, would that help at all, before I do the trig etc off it? I have a very good straightedge and fifty quids worth of setsquare adjustable protractor that I use for technical drawing on my A0 drawing board, it's about 25 inches (640 mm) long on its hypotenuese, which should be enough to measure angles and distances with some kinda veracity, I am not sure of the projection without looking again. Is it worth me taking a look and reporting back, probably will be about UTC+2 Friday tomorrow, else Monday? If you give me some nice trig points "in the middle" I will do my best to give you the readings off of them. These won't be 100% accuracy but will be within a second of arc or two through the distortion of the glass in the frame, I would imagine. Si Trew (talk) 16:05, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
- I understand if it is WP:COPYVIO etc but if I check the maker first, it may very well turn out not to be because of the date and also various other "things that have happened since", could well be PD or fair use. I think I check the maker first, that is clear enough in top right corner but don't remember offhand. Would that be of any use, at least to confirm or deny if it's the same as this one? It reminded me of this one, when I first saw it, but I think it is different but of about the same time. Si Trew (talk) 16:40, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
- File:Hungary_location_map.svg is the one I made the four-colour svg version of. It just needs tidying on the text labels layer if I remember right, I can't remember its name. The computer it was on is long gone. File:Hungary location map2.svg? Something like that. We have File:Hungary location map-2.jpg on Commons, but that's not it, cos it's not four-colour and has labels in Cyrillic, is a jpg not an svg. Perhaps unfortunately it got deleted as unused. I'd need to ask an admin to dredge from about 2009 onwards. Users working on it would have been mostly me and perhaps occasionally the missus, no longer editing at Wikipedia for many a year due to very harsh and undeserved comments after excellent translations of English articles about the Tudors into HU:WP (something she is an expert in, more than I know and I'm bloody English): Her username was/is User:Monkap. - OK, the map you included wrongfooted me, this is exactly the map that is nominated (duh!) I was looking at the map you included on the right. No, don't give up on it, I'll try to fix it. It is nearly OK, all the coords and borders and counties etc are done on separate labels and I think it is much better than the boring brown map transcluded via
{{Infobox Hungarian settlement}}
. We just need to fix the edges and fix the text-label layer for some reason the font doesn't scale properly, I never did work out why, I shall try again. One reason to separate into different layers in a good GIS fashion is so that with a flick of the wrist one can turn off all the labels, turn off e.g. the county borders, make all the counties brown and just fill one particular county in a different colour (for Hungarian county articles) etc etc etc. I hand-edited the XML for the SVG to make it all nice, it's much much nicer than its predecessor for putting into a GIS etc because each county edge and county border and county name etc is labeleed in a very consistent fashion. The underlying SVG is File:Kingdom_of_Hungary_counties-2.svg. The polygons for the borders go actually in a kinda "cogwheel" order so that some going anticlockwise have their boundaries against the others going clockwise, rather in a toothed gearwheel manner, but that was just my pedantry; each county actually has its own borders as it did on the original, but on the original the borders for e.g Budapest to Pest County were a bit different from the borders of Pest County to Budapest, i.e. there was a gap or overlap, which now there is not in "my" version, they have all the coordinates bang on, as I did them all in hand in the XML not with some "snap it roughly to where it looks right" tool. All the bordering points have the same coords but the opposite directions (clockwise or widdershins) which helps the SVG polygon fill get it right without overlap or gap.

- I think we should keep it and try to fix the labels and the "fix" coordinates for it. I suppose this was a labour of love but I think it does make it better than what is used in the infobox, it scales except for the text labels and the old one has errors in the border coords that leave gaps or overlaps, it just doesn't seem so at the scale used in infoboxes, as the rendering of the borders and the pushpins for the places are far larger than the errors, at even a large-screen resolution scale. If you blow it up and print it onto A0 (paper size) is is noticeable. Si Trew (talk) 17:05, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
- The text labels are fine on my I think 1972 across screen in full view. When I made this I think I had a 1024x768 screen. It's when the labels are all squished they don't scale down properly, and get all scrunched up, I have never quite worked out why. There is a style that governs it, and I tried all sorts of things but none worked. Si Trew (talk) 21:04, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
Needs help
I like charts, mostly pie but also bar, and I really like shades of grey best - for normal purposes physically printing is just black‑and‑white (and shades of grey). But this really allow only ten shades of grey. I would like just a few options to make up to 15-ish. I think to extend to texture would do the trick. And I see that these days CSS background‑image can be specified. These are lots of different things can be made, but for use here I would just what two textures, and just left top to right bottom or the other way, and narrow chevron or wider.
thick | ||||
left | right | |||
thin |
It be easiest to make just one colour : | ||
So Frietjes, I won't if you could help. I want to enhance module:chart (bar and pie). The module have been written by the user-with-a-Hebrew-name, (name is קיפודנחש), s/he doesn't seem to be online very often. It seems easy enough, but the module code is a closed book as far as I can see. Do you be able to help?
Just all one or two colours, with direction 'left' or 'right', and 'thin' or 'thick'. I know this OK with IE, I don't know any browser.

- Frietjes (talk) I'll be going on holiday for three weeks, so I won't look into it until new year. I don't think anything difficult, just background‑image:repeating-linear-gradient by CSS. I just need it into module:Chart – Unbuttered parsnip (talk) mytime= Wed 05:09, wikitime= 21:09, 1 December 2015 (UTC)
Dear user, I saw that you contributed in Template:Photomontage and Module:Photo montage, so I got a question: is it possible to make this Template automatically adjust the heigh of images by cropping the highest to the level of lowest one? I primaly use this template to make rich city-related collages. This template tries to render all images with equal width of all images in row. Sometimes aspect ratio of different images is not the same and as a Result I got an empty space around the lower image which makes the whole collage not so attractive as it could be.--Orange-kun (talk) 19:24, 11 March 2016 (UTC)

Hi there Frietjes (Freet-yes?), thanks for your recent edits on the All-Southern teams. Are you the code wizard able to help me fix the single wing diagrams? If so, I could feel good about nominating 1921 Centre, 1925 Alabama, 1926 Alabama, &c for GA. How can I move the row containing QB and RHB over one space to the right, like the picture at right?

- Cake, vertical-align:top usually helps keep things aligned within the row. are you asking for less of a vertical gap between the rows, or for the LHB to be further up? Frietjes (talk) 22:30, 25 October 2016 (UTC)
- I'm asking for the "QB" and "RHB" cells - the second horizontal row, to move over a unit to the right. Like the picture. Never could figure it out. Cake (talk) 01:06, 26 October 2016 (UTC)
- Cake, there are other ways to do it (for example, this hack), but the modified version above is probably the most robust. another option would be doing something like {{football squad on pitch}}. Frietjes (talk) 21:55, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
- would it be useful to merge this with Template:CFB Team Depth Chart or make a new template for this formation? Frietjes (talk) 22:05, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
- Well I didn't need to move the fullback at all, but you did manage to get the wingback (RHB) to work, which I found so difficult, and thank you. I didn't know there was a template either - cool. I've managed to sufficiently mimic the short punt (say here) and the T (say here) and the jump shift (say here). Other articles already had the I (say here). Cake (talk) 03:13, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
- Note the similarity to the picture with my minor change. Well done. Cake (talk) 03:30, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
- Long way to say yes, I think it would help to have these as options just like pro-set or I on that template. Need to try my hand at making a 7-2-2 defense. Also, apparently switching the spot of the QB with the LHB or TB was common, but as we have it above was even more common. Cake (talk)

Update to Template:CFB Yearly Record - follow up
Are you planning on making the changes to the template that you mentioned in WP CFB? Is there anything I can do? I don't think I would even know how to help but I guess you can let me know. Kobra98 (talk) 21:01, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
- Kobra98, the first step is probably to fix all the entries in Category:Pages using CFB Yearly Record End with bcs to use
|bowl=no
instead of|bcs=no
, since the parameter is for suppressing the bowls footnote. after that, the question is what syntax do we want for suppressing parts of that footnote? - Option 1)
|bc=no
to suppress bowl coalition,|ba=no
to suppress bowl alliance,|bcs=no
to suppress BCS, and|cfp=no
to suppress CFP. - Option 2)
|bowls=bcs / ba
to show bcs and bowl alliance, but suppress bowl coalition and CFP - Option 3)
|yearstart=
/|yearend=
and then automatically suppress based on the start and end years.- as far as programming goes, option 1 and 3 are the easiest. I personally like option 3 if we have start/end years for each bowl type. Frietjes (talk) 21:19, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
- Frietjes, do these entries need to be changed manually or is there a faster way? Also I still agree the third option is the best option. Kobra98 (talk) 21:38, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
- Kobra98, for the first part, changing all the
|bcs=no
to|bowls=no
, I can get a bot to do it. for the second part, it may be possible to have a bot analyse the text above the footer to determine the year range, but I would think it would be safer to just have a human do that part. but, we can cross that bridge later. Frietjes (talk) 22:56, 28 April 2017 (UTC)- Oh yeah I wasn't even thinking about a bot adding in the year range, but I'm glad you can get a bot to do the first part. I could do a lot of the work for the second part. Kobra98 (talk) 23:06, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
- Kobra98, do you have date ranges for the four different bowl types? Frietjes (talk) 23:13, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
- Bowl coalition was 1992-94, Bowl Alliance was 1995-97, BCS was 1998-2013, and CFP is 2014-present. Kobra98 (talk) 21:41, 29 April 2017 (UTC)
- Kobra98, this should work now. use
|yearstart=
for the starting year, and|yearend=
for the ending year. if|bowl=no
or|bowls=no
, then the footnote is suppressed. otherwise, if|yearstart=a number
, then it should selectively omit bowls from the note based on the value. the values are further restricted if|yearend=a number
, otherwise it assumes that the coach is still active. you can see some sample output in the tests listed in Template:CFB Yearly Record End/footnotes. note that without|yearstart=
, the template operates exactly as before, so no rush to update any articles. let me know if you need me to tweak the year ranges, (e.g., less-than-or-equal-to vs less-than). Frietjes (talk) 14:04, 1 May 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for template help
Hi, Frietjes! Thanks for answering my question here about the song track templates. And thanks for adding "noinclude" to the four templates; that did remove the transcluded deletion notice from the article talk pages. I wasn't the one who nominated these templates for deletion; I rarely mess with templates. I was just the one who discovered all those song articles incorrectly listed in a speedy deletion category. And the funny thing is, they are all still listed there! See Category:Speedy deletion candidates with talk pages. I can't find any mention or citation of the templates on the article pages. Should I strip out all the titles from the templates, will that fix it? Or should I just ignore the false category listings, assuming they will go away when the templates are deleted? Sorry to be so clueless, but this just isn't an area I deal with normally. --MelanieN (talk) 14:56, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
- MelanieN, you can remove them from the category by purging the transcluding pages with a null edit. in other words, (1) open the article in edit mode, (2) make no changes, (3) press save. Frietjes (talk) 15:06, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

Just fixed an invisible error in Niagara Square by adding a map name, even though it does not display. Though the error was invisible I could see it in the page source complaining about a missing name. But looking at the source I could not see why it was generating an error, nor why adding the map fixes it but does not display the map, as it should. Hoping you could look at it, as the last person to edit the article before me and the template,--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 09:53, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

Module:Sorted plain list (again!)
I was reading the latest changes to this yesterday. But now I can't find it. Never mind, I'll work without it.
- The problem now is Central Visayas (Q13669) contains the administrative territorial entity (P150) has six elements. One of them is "[[Lapu-Lapu, Philippines|Lapu-Lapu]]". It seems that the propertyID is not right, and in any case, how can I find about it?
- In another problems with that dataset, is that there are mixed data - some of elements are provinces, others are cities (we can also mixed into huc and icc)(and also cc for completeness but not needed here). Would it be a good idea to add qualifiers? And the next question, would it be possible to change css on the way through? 112.198.71.216 (talk) 09:46, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
- so the problem is that "contains administrative territorial entity" includes both independent cities and provinces? obviously, if the WikiData entry doesn't distinguish between the two, there is no way for the template/module to distinguish between the two. there is contains settlement (P1383) so, in theory, one could use P1383 for independent cities and P150 for provinces. I have no idea what you mean by "change css on the way through" since there is no CSS in the wikidata. Frietjes (talk) 13:03, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
Template:Infobox noble
Hi Frietjes. I compared the order of the different parts of this template to other templates here on Wikipedia and realized that unlike so many other info boxes "Birth", "Death" and "Burial" don't come first. Usually a person's date of birth, death and burial are the first things that can be seen in an info box, so I don't know why this one should be an exception. I tried to fix it myself but then I thought it would be wiser to ask a template editor to do it. Keivan.fTalk 08:18, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
- Keivan.f, I would suggest starting a discussion on the talk page of {{infobox noble}} and {{infobox royalty}} (the template after which the noble template was patterned). another very widely used template with the personal information at the bottom is {{infobox officeholder}}. Frietjes (talk) 12:24, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
- I understand what you're trying to say, but if you pay attention to the structure of those two templates ({{infobox officeholder}} and {{infobox royalty}}) you'll see that personal details come after "office" and "succession". There's also a part in {{infobox noble}} titled "succession" that comes first, and I think it's OK because my problem is with the order of personal details as I believe just like {{infobox officeholder}} and {{infobox royalty}} "Birth", "Death" and "Burial" should be the first three parts in that section. Anyway, do I have to start an discussion on the talk page of {{infobox noble}} in order to make these changes happen? Keivan.fTalk 12:20, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
- Keivan.f, yes, you need consensus unless you want the change to be immediately reverted. Frietjes (talk) 12:22, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
- Per your instructions I left a note on Template talk:Infobox royalty regarding the issue that I mentioned above. It's been almost 4 days, and despite my expectations no one has engaged in the discussion yet. You told me that I couldn't change the order of parameters on that template as without a consensus my edits would be reverted. Now no one has neither supported nor opposed the suggested changes. May I ask what needs to be done right now? Keivan.fTalk 02:32, 29 July 2017 (UTC)

I will have a look and make the change if it doesn't break anything. Frietjes (talk) 13:33, 29 July 2017 (UTC)

NCAA color cell
Frietjes, I've noticed you've been changing the {{CollegePrimaryStyle}} templates to {{NCAA color cell}} templates in NCAA rivalry articles... I was wondering if this is only for rivalry articles or what the game plan for this is? Thanks, Corkythehornetfan (ping me) 16:44, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
- Corkythehornetfan, the advantage of using {{NCAA color cell}} in the rivalry series table is that you don't have to specify the font color or say border=0. the {{NCAA color cell}} automatically selects the font color (so you don't have to figure out which one has greater contrast), and uses no border by default. for the secondary color, there is {{NCAA secondary color cell}}. it's really a low priority, but we should consider using {{NCAA color cell}} in cases where (1) we want no border, and (2) we want either white/black font color. so, clearly this is not all the cases where {{CollegePrimaryStyle}} is being used, but the rivalry series tables are one place where this is (usually) the case. Frietjes (talk) 16:49, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks! I had figured it automatically configured the font color, and it looks much simpler! I'm thinking this one needs to stay out of the navboxes (I know there is a few schools with no borders)... it will just cause a mess. What other articles would this be used in? Corkythehornetfan (ping me) 17:32, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
- Corkythehornetfan, I don't know of any other obvious places where we would use {{NCAA color cell}}, but there may be others. for table headers, I suggest {{CollegePrimaryHeader}} to avoid the repeated calls to the same {{CollegePrimaryStyle}} template. Frietjes (talk) 23:16, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

Question
Hi User:Frietjes, just a question of interest (I probably won't be able to add this anywhere), do you know why a lot of single and album covers in 2017 have the main image in a box inside a white/black background? It seems to have started with hip hop songs.
- Some examples: The Life of Pablo, Places (song), Slide (Calvin Harris song), Stay (Zedd and Alessia Cara song), No Frauds, More Life, No Promises (Cheat Codes song), The Cure (song), Despacito (Remix), Bon Appétit (song) and For Crying Out Loud (album).--Theo Mandela (talk) 22:56, 20 May 2017 (UTC)
- Theo Mandela, are you asking why the image is at the top of the infobox? you should probably ask at template talk:Infobox album, template talk:Infobox song or Template talk:Infobox single. Frietjes (talk) 12:24, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
- No, the cover art itself, if you know the reason behind it?--Theo Mandela (talk) 18:55, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

I was wondering if splitting Template:Politics sidebar title into three parts makes sense at all? That way, the templates wouldn't have to open and close their own <tr><td> tags. The parameters wouldn't change, so a bot could probably handle it, for instance:
{{Sidebar with collapsible lists ... | title = {{Politics sidebar title |country=The Gambia |image=Coat of arms of The Gambia.svg |size=170px |title=the Gambia}} ... }}
to:
{{Sidebar with collapsible lists ... | title = {{Politics sidebar title |country=The Gambia}} | topimage = {{Politics sidebar image |image=Coat of arms of The Gambia.svg |size=170px}} | topcaption = {{Politics sidebar caption |title=the Gambia}} ... }}
Matt Fitzpatrick (talk) 03:36, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
- Matt Fitzpatrick, that template was created for this purpose. in other words, to replace the old {{politics box}} system. the structure of the headers is (1) the linked name of the country with microformats, (2) an image, (3) the pretitle, and (4) the title. currently, sidebar has (1) pretitle, (2) title, and (3) above. so, we are missing one. one method for mapping is this one that I tried earlier on. in your suggested solution,
{{politics sidebar title}}
would be nearly pointless (link + microformat), but it would just add the microformat, and{{politics sidebar image}}
would be redundant to simple image markup. the final template {{politics sidebar caption}} would be the only one that would do anything significant. so, if you want to go that route, I would suggest,
{{Sidebar with collapsible lists ... | title = {{Politics sidebar title |country=The Gambia}} | image = [[File:Coat of arms of The Gambia.svg|170px]] | above = {{Politics sidebar caption |title=the Gambia}} ... }}
- or, another option would be to create a LUA wrapper for Module:sidebar so that you could write
{{Sidebar region politics |collapsiblelists = yes |country=The Gambia |image=Coat of arms of The Gambia.svg |imagesize=170px |title=the Gambia ... }}
- for another example of a wrapper module, see "Module:Team roster navbox". Frietjes (talk) 12:29, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
Regarding this change: I'm unclear regarding what you have introduced regarding the colour of the links. Can you provide examples that illustrate what has changed? I'm a bit concerned about trying to set the colours automatically in some fashion: will it affect existing uses of the Team roster navbox template? If so it would be an unexpected change, plus it might pose accessibility issues. isaacl (talk) 13:18, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
- isaacl, see Template:New York Giants coach navbox for example. if there is a contrast issue, with the titlestyle, for example, then that contrast issue exists with the navbar v-t-e and show/hide links. do you see a problem? Frietjes (talk) 13:20, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
- I'm not familiar with the styles in question; which parts of the navbox are your changes affecting? I guess the intent is to alter the colours of the link text to match the style of the enclosing cells? If so, then would this also be a change that the general navbox template could benefit from? isaacl (talk) 13:27, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
- isaacl, yes, the change makes it so this works, which reduces the amount of code in the transcluding template. and, yes, I plan to propose adding this as an option to {{navbox}}. we recently had
|nowrapitems=yes
added, which basically made this module redundant until I added new functionality to it. please let me know if you see any problems. Frietjes (talk) 13:30, 3 June 2017 (UTC)- Yes, I was expecting to see this module and the corresponding template go away, which is why I was surprised to see new functionality being added. Thanks for your explanation; I will keep an eye out for any issues. Hopefully the navbox template can be updated faster than it took to add nowrapitems! isaacl (talk) 13:40, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
- isaacl, yes, I hope so too. I will let you know when I start a thread at template talk:navbox. I want to make sure there are no unexpected problems before I do. Frietjes (talk) 13:42, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

Coordinates question
Are we no longer using detailed coordinate strings? For the Division of Paterson, {{Infobox Australian Electorate}} automatically generates {{coord|32|24|25|S|151|55|5|E|type:adm1st_region:AU-NSW|display=inline, title}} but your edit today replaced that with just {{coord|32|24|25|S|151|55|5|E|display=inline, title}}. --AussieLegend (✉) 08:27, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
- AussieLegend, if you omit the 'type' and 'region' information, it is added by the infobox through the 'coordinsert' function in the coordinates module. you can verify this by hovering over the coordinates and inspecting the URL. however, you are certainly free to add the 'type' and 'region' information manually. if you do so, the 'coordinsert' function will not override what you specify. for some more information, see Module:Coordinates. NFL colors
Frietjes, would it be possible to get the Template:Infobox NFL team to be like the college navboxes and use automatic contrast in it? The one article I noticed that is far from being compliant with contrast is the Cleveland Browns article. The Brown and orange do not go well together! Odd image sizing behavior in Infobox Mountain
I spent some time digging through the behavior of the size parameters for both the photo and the map_image (which you just added). It's a little odd. If an editor specifies an image size in px, then it will be capped at 280px. However, the default is |upright=1.25
, so you can easily get images larger than 280px. For example, my preferred thumbsize is 250px, so I get maps and images with width=310px
Not that it's wrong -- it's just a little strange. I wonder if editors should be able to specify the |upright=
size? —hike395 (talk) 03:22, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
- hike395, sure. a quick search shows that Template:Infobox person, Template:Infobox musical artist, Template:Infobox military operation, Template:Infobox museum, Template:Infobox artwork, Template:Infobox television season, Template:Infobox television, Template:Infobox World Heritage Site, ... and many others allow the upright value to be set. unfortunately, Template:Location map requires the pixel width. so no matter what you do there is no way to enforce consistency between a pushpin location map and a static image. that is unless there is some way to read the user's thumb preferences. Frietjes (talk) 13:05, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
- I think we could hack Module:Location map to take
|upright=
like Module:InfoboxImage does, but that is beyond my skills at Lua. —hike395 (talk) 15:34, 24 June 2017 (UTC)

Editing of mountain articles?
If I understand what you're doing, you're removing the following parameters being fed to {{Infobox mountain}}: |flag=
, |landmark=
, |remarks=
, |river=
, |rock=
, and |timezone=
? That's great! When I converted thousands of articles over from {{Geobox}} to {{Infobox mountain range}}, I purposefully left out (IMO) inappropriate parameters in the newer infobox, but never removed them from the articles. Thanks for doing this! —hike395 (talk) 15:31, 24 June 2017 (UTC)
- hike395, that's the general plan. I don't plan to remove
|rock=
since that should be replaced by|geology=
. as for|timezone=
,|river=
, and|landmark=
, I was planning to have a discussion on the talk page before removing. as for|remarks=
, those can frequently be replaced by|listing=
, so I don't plan to remove all of them. Frietjes (talk) 15:35, 24 June 2017 (UTC)- Well, it's been 5 years since I converted to {{Infobox mountain range}}, and no one has complained about the lack of
|timezone=
,|river=
, or|landmark=
. I suspect we can simply remove them. —hike395 (talk) 18:12, 24 June 2017 (UTC)
- Well, it's been 5 years since I converted to {{Infobox mountain range}}, and no one has complained about the lack of
Infobox country
I noted that your solution still leaves the images left-justified when the |flag_width=
parameter is used. I removed the if function from the |width1=
parameter in the sandbox and set |width1=58%
, which fixes that problem – see Template:Infobox country/testcases#China, where |flag_width=
is used and set to 150px. How badly does the template need that if function? Paine Ellsworth put'r there 22:18, 24 June 2017 (UTC)
- User:Paine Ellsworth, that seems like the best idea. the {{infobox settlement}} template doesn't try to match the widths of the table cells in the flag/symbol table. Frietjes (talk) 13:12, 25 June 2017 (UTC)

I'm not sure whether the UNESCO world heritage information should be included in the infobox in Drakensberg. template South African Town
You were so quick to help at Airport template, I thought I'd ask about another one. I posted over at Template talk:Infobox South African town#Problem with Cape Town maps but I'm not sure anyone is watching. This template creates a pushpin map in the normal way, then for three "municipalities" it adds an extra local map. (-- Wedge secondary map in box after pushpin map --). The problem is that many of the towns in these municipalities aren't within the maps used, and mark points are shown outside the map (sometimes in the prose or elsewhere in the infobox). Ideally, maps of a larger area might solve this, but I don't believe they currently exist. Do you know if it is possible to check if the map used (e.g. Cape Town) with the given coordinates creates a map location error, and if so, just skip the display of the municipality map. That's the best solution I can think of, it's its feasible. Thanks MB 01:03, 30 June 2017 (UTC)
Location Map Error category
Hello again. I've been fixing articles in Category:Location maps with possible errors and was wondering about a change to the Module. I've fixed over 100 articles, and there are almost 300 still with errors. However, about half of these are in User space and don't need "fixing" because they aren't part of the encyclopedia. Is it possible to put these into two different sub-categories based on article type (i.e. "User space" and "everything else", or perhaps "article space" and "everything else"). This would give me one list to work on. Obviously I can work with it the way it is, so this isn't worth much effort. But if it is easy I would find it a nice enhancement. I wouldn't think this is controversial, but if you think I should post on the module talk page first, or if you think it's not worth the effort just let me know. Thanks again. Yet more tweaks need for Module:Sorted plain list
1 I would like to extend the use in wikidata. Because of its nature, that can be several Qs within a single P (i.e. P150) and we only want one at a time. See Ho Chi Minh City (Q1854) contains the administrative territorial entity (P150) – and use only (Q31495383). Is it possible to improve Module:Sorted plain list easily?
2 Is it possible to sort right – Division 1, Division 2, Division 3 … Division 10, Division 11, Division 12 and not Division 1, Division 10, Division 11, Division 12 … Division 8, Division 9 etc.

Hi, Frietjes. I was wondering about your italicizing BBC and Creative Planet Network at Carol (film). Networks aren't italicized, and, indeed, BBC is not italicized in prose at this very article. Thank you for any help or information on this. --Tenebrae (talk) 17:18, 7 July 2017 (UTC)
- I am removing pages from Category:Pages using duplicate arguments in template calls. I suggest you use "show preview" before saving. also, there is a difference between BBC (an organisation) and "BBC Culture" (a series). I really don't care if you want to use the
|series=

parameter. but using|publisher=
twice in the same citation is pointless and adds pages to Category:Pages using duplicate arguments in template calls. Frietjes (talk) 17:23, 7 July 2017 (UTC)

Was Module:Parse chronology supposed to be for {{Infobox single}}? If it's not being used (since I made the wrapper with Module:String for some reason) it would be nice if I could repurpose the title to be used for additional find-and-replace in the infoboxes (such as to detect "(acoustic)" or "(EP)" at the end of strings), since other titles might be too vague. Module template colors
Hello, I have a problem with the colors of team templates. In particular it can be seen in the roster templates at the bottom of the Fenerbahçe Women's Volleyball and Fenerbahçe Men's Volleyball articles. The season numerals and the word roster appear in a different tone of yellow, even though the basesytle is defined with the color #FFED00. Do you know what the problem is and can help me? - Akocsg, I don't see any problem, did you fix it with this edit? Frietjes (talk) 13:16, 1 August 2017 (UTC)
- It doesn't seem so. Isn't the "2016-17 roster" part in another tone of yellow as the rest? I'm almost sure it is. I know that basketball teams colors are defined in an extra module, so the templates get their colors from there. Is it the same for volleyball teams? Because the edit doesn't seem to change the color of that part. Akocsg (talk) 14:32, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

Tennis events - date option
If I recall you do well with Lua and I wanted an option added to the template "Tennis events." If you see the article 2017 Bank of the West Classic – Singles the infobox does not have a date option for the final. I tried date= and was shocked to find out it wasn't even an option and won't show up. I wouldn't want it mandatory because some older events we simply don't know the date of the final. But for the last 10 years it's usually easy enough to dig up. I think it would be best right at the top as in this image I created at at imgur, and needs to works for men/women/singles/doubles. - Fyunck(click), yes, although it was standard parser-function / template syntax in this case. I have scripts that assist with inserting new parameters in infoboxes, doing all the label/data renumbering. the whole process didn't take more than about 30 seconds. Templates of NCAA Season 92 main & volleyball
Hi Frietjes, you just basically copied and paste the existing information and then rfd the templates? The templates were created so as to avoid "double" work in updating the data in both articles (NCAA Season 92 and NCAA Season 92 volleyball tournaments) during the season. And, I do agree with the deletion of the unused templates. – Rick (talk) 00:44, 17 August 2017 (UTC)
- Rickt11, you can use WP:LST for sharing information between articles, which was the conclusion of the July 31 discussion. for an example search for "#section" in the source for NCAA Season 92 and you will find that information from both NCAA Season 92 basketball tournaments and NCAA Season 92 volleyball tournaments is being transcluded in NCAA Season 92 using WP:LST. Frietjes (talk) 13:46, 17 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi Frietjes, is this template able to be substituted like the infobox ones? It's currently been nominated for deletion here but is widely used on German Wiki and we want to be able to import it "as is" and then have it substituted. --Bermicourt (talk) 18:34, 21 August 2017 (UTC)
- Bermicourt, it looks like we can make it a wrapper for {{Routemap-Infobox}} as suggested in the TfD. converting to {{Infobox rail line}} isn't as simple since {{BS-daten}} only generates part of the infobox, and doesn't generate the open/close parts of the table. I believe Jc86035 can do it, but let me know if more help is needed. Frietjes (talk) 20:25, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
NFL color templates
Frietjes, would it be possible to fix the automatic borders for the NFL color templates (i.e. Template:NFLAltSecondaryColor) like you've done for the Module:Basketball color and Module:College color modules? I don't know/can't find the place to fix it for the NFL colors. Thanks, Corkythehornetfan (ping me) 02:10, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
- Corkythehornetfan, can you provide me with an example? if I recall, the main interface is through {{NFLPrimaryStyle}} and {{NFLAltPrimaryStyle}}? if this is the case, we would just need to change the border declaration to use {{box-shadow border}} instead of the more simplistic border code. I'm travelling right now, but I can take a look sometime before Friday. Frietjes (talk) 20:19, 22 August 2017 (UTC)

Basketball roster templates
Could you explain why did you merge Template:BC Šiauliai roster, among with many other roster templates, to the article/articles? What is the purpose for such action? – Sabbatino (talk) 08:08, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
- Sabbatino, there have been numerous discussions at WP:TFD with the conclusion that single-use roster templates should be merged with the article, since there is no need to keep the roster in a template outside of the article. in the case that there is an individual season article, the roster can be transcluded in the main team article using WP:LST. I can point to several examples where using a roster template has been disastrous, since people often forget to substitute the roster template at the end of the season, and as a result, you get the same roster appearing in multiple season articles. basically, there is no reason to keep the roster in a separate template. Frietjes (talk) 10:49, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
- So what you are basically saying is that almost all basketball roster templates (even teams like Barcelona or Real Madrid) should be moved to the articles of respective teams if there are no season articles being created? And yes, it would be good if you could point to examples to better understand the situation. – Sabbatino (talk) 11:16, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
- Sabbatino, yes, all single-use roster templates should be merged with the article. that's the consensus from TfD. it doesn't take long to find some disastrous examples like Template:Bilbao Basket roster which is actively being updated, but is also transcluded in 2015–16 Bilbao Basket season which ended last year. hence, we have a completely incorrect 2015–16 Bilbao Basket season#Squad information. the only way to fix this is to take an old version of Template:Bilbao Basket roster and merge it with the 2015–16 Bilbao Basket season article. I have fixed dozens of these. Frietjes (talk) 11:34, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
- Sabbatino, and, even if there is individual season articles, we should still merge the season rosters with the articles to prevent problems like the one I have described above. Frietjes (talk) 11:35, 23 August 2017 (UTC)

Publication list - en
Hi there. Appreciate your help but the publication list for CPPC is going to be reused on the various language Wikipedias, including Spanish and Portuguese -- so using the ISO two letter code -- including en for English -- makes them translate to the local language without manually updating. And we are trying to list en so as to let people know who are on the other language wikis what language the resource is in. This is part of a GLAM initiative so this is sort of our master list so am also trying to keep formatting very consistent and tight. So no extra spaces is ideal, since the refs are built from the RefToolbar 2.0 in WikiMarkup filling in the forms, often auto-populating from lookups. Please let me know if you have any questions. I am not seeing an error message and this is our task list, so you making changes to these citations is incredibly disruptive to the outreach effort. I am not trying to be difficult here but when you make these changes, there is blowback to other pages as well, as these are the master list of citations. I ask for some kindness and understanding here. I am not trying to be difficult, but this is a ton of work and we are really trying to be impactful. If you change these small things, it is slowing down the work and is impacting the re-use of these citations. I understand your point but would beg you to consider not making changes to these citations, as they are very clean and ready for reuse across language Wikis. Thanks in advance. -- Erika aka BrillLyle (talk) 21:57, 25 August 2017 (UTC)
- BrillLyle, if you aren't seeing the error message, then you are viewing the version that I fixed. It's really simple, just press "show preview" and look for the red errors at the top of the page. I'm Back!
Heyo. How goes it? Not sure if you'll remember me... I've been gone for a while. I wanted to get your input on something. I'm getting back to work on Converting templates to use Infobox and I'm coming across a number of boxes that use a series of templates to construct the infobox. For example Starboxes use a series of different templates starting with Template:Starbox begin and ending with Template:Starbox end. What is the best avenue, in your opinion, to discuss converting these to use {{Infobox}} as a base? Is this something for the village pump? Any thoughts appreciated! Hope you are well. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 17:21, 29 August 2017 (UTC)
- Zackmann08 there are a few sets of infobox templates that function this way. at one point in time, someone started a unified {{infobox star}}, but there is tremendous momentum behind using the existing series of starbox templates instead. you can see that by checking the age and number of transclusions of {{infobox star}}. sure, it would be possible to convert the parts to use "infobox|child=yes", but I'm not sure it's worth it. another example is the {{Infobox ship begin}} series. Hello, I noticed you have edited {{Infobox football biography}} and {{Infobox football official}}, so I was wondering if you could help fix the article on Károly Palotai. First, is there a way the image can be disabled in {{Infobox football official}}? Also, the note on {{Infobox football biography}} ("Senior club appearances and goals counted for the domestic league only") appears at the top of the article when embedding the official infobox, could this be fixed as well? Thanks, S.A. Julio (talk) 12:21, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
- S.A. Julio, the problem is that the
|module=
in {{Infobox football biography}} assumes that the template being embedded uses {{infobox}} and not {{infobox3cols}}. modules generated by {{infobox}} aren't complete tables, but modules generated by {{infobox3cols}} are complete tables. we could create a second parameter, say module3cols, for embedding 3col templates, but I have no idea how common this is. for now, I have hacked in a solution, but I would like to create a less hacked solution. I have also added some tracking code to {{infobox football biography}} so we can get a better idea of how modules are being used in the articles, so we don't break anything by fixing the problem. Frietjes (talk) 14:04, 31 August 2017 (UTC)- Alright, thank you very much! S.A. Julio (talk) 16:14, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
A problem over at nn.wikipedia
Hi, as you are my go to person, when it comes to templates, etc....I have a problem.
Many of the village articles I have been working on, on en.wp, on the West Bank, especially, have been translated into nn.wikipedia.org (That is, Nynorsk)
Which is fine, except that when they have translated the Bibliography, they have translated | year = to |år, (as 'år' equal 'year' in Nynorsk.)
Alas, the parser don't understand that (Apparently, the parser over at nn.wikipedia only understands English).
The result is an ugly mess, like this:
(That text in red: "Den ukjende parameteren |år= vart ignorert" means "the unknown parameter |år= is ignored")
I tried to raise the issue over at their place (yes, I understand the language!), here:
....but apparently they don't have any good template editors there, I was advised to change it all by hand (there are more than 800 articles left!) nn.wp is a rather small wp, as Nynorsk is only spoken in Western Norway.
Is there any way you know of, that can change it, so that the parser both understand 'år' and 'year'? If so, please suggest it over at
- https://nn.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Samfunnshuset#Forandre_malen (it is fine to write in English, I'm sure everyone there understands it)
Cheers, Huldra (talk) 21:17, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
- Huldra, I fixed it with this change to add it as an alias for "year", and then this change to put it on the list of valid parameters. Frietjes (talk) 21:39, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

- Actually, yes, I see some have used nettstad for url. And some have used the word stad for location. And some have used dato for year, and tittel for title (all is correct in Nynorsk, but again, not words the parser understands). Presently there are 308 articles in the "Pages with citations using unsupported parameters" on nn.wp.Huldra (talk) 22:56, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

nettstad
the same asurl
orwebsite
? people frequently usewebsite
forurl
here, but we keep them as two separate parameters. Frietjes (talk) 13:19, 2 September 2017 (UTC)- That is a good question, I would assume it is the same as
website
. However, Norwegian (both languages) are much "poorer" that English, that is, there are much fewer words in the Norwegian languages than in English. (Just one example: the English words for roof, and ceiling, both translates to one word in Norwegian: tak. ) Sincenettstad
is a newer "constructed" word, I do not know the exact definition of it, (I'll ask my Nynorsk talking friend where I can find the exact definition). It is possible thatnettstad
is used for bothurl
andwebsite
...I simply do not know. Huldra (talk) 20:43, 2 September 2017 (UTC)

Category:2012 Summer Olympics event navigational boxes I've found that all these olympic event nav boxes still use the old style code... Was thinking of trying to generalize it. My thought would be to have something like {{Olympic event sidebar|year=2012}}

- Zackmann08, I was working on it a bit earlier this week, but it's still a work in progress. it would be trivial for me to add two more columns, and I can do that right now if it would be helpful. I also added
|imageright=
, which should work right now. what I am still working on is the best input format for cells that span more than one column. I would like to make something like|results1.1ab=
work. right now you can specify|results1.1=
to span the entire row. hopefully, I can get back to it on Friday. Frietjes (talk) 18:55, 14 September 2017 (UTC)- Right on!! I love the idea of
|results1.1=
spanning the row. No rush at all. Just keep me posted when you do get a chance to add to it. There really isn't a rush here. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:57, 14 September 2017 (UTC)- Also FWIW, I've got a running list of Todo pages at User:Zackmann08/sidebar todo. I've seen you making updates to navboxes such as this one. Can you explain what it's about? I often create navboxes, so it would be helpful to know what this is about. (I'm not questioning whether or not the edits should be done, as I assume you know what you're doing. I'm just curious as to what it's about.) Thanks. - BilCat (talk) 23:35, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
- BilCat, basically, it's about reducing overhead. (1) by changing 'navbox subgroup' to 'navbox|subgroup' we use navbox directly rather than the extra layer in 'navbox subgroup'. these are functionally equivalent, but using the additional layer in 'navbox subgroup' is less efficient and limits the number of groups/lists to 20. (2) by removing 'liststyle = width:auto' we reduce the amount of extraneous inline css. the default width for lists is already "auto" since it's the difference between the table width and the group width. (3) changing 'groupstyle = width:' to 'groupwidth' isn't that important, but it does reduce the number of 'groupstyle' statements that are processed when generating the color tracking categories. Template:Sidebar games events
Hi. I'm not sure what's happened with this, but it's now bringing back error messages across all other templates and pages using it. For example {{AthleticsAt1924SummerOlympics}} just shows "Lua error in Module:Sidebar_games_events at line 235: Tried to read nil global colspan." which feeds through to the article Athletics at the 1924 Summer Olympics – Men's 110 metres hurdles, with you being the last one to edit the template. Any ideas? Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 19:14, 12 September 2017 (UTC)

Template help requested
Hi Frietjes. As a result of this discussion, the Formula One season articles from 1981 onwards have been renamed from "YYYY Formula One season" to "YYYY FIA Formula One World Championship". I was wondering, would you be able to update Template:F1 such that if {{{1}}} is > 1980, it links to "{{{1}}} FIA Formula One World Championship" instead of "{{{1}}} Formula One season" ? I realise that the template still "works" in its current form, due to the redirects, but it means that years > 1980 are not bolded in Template:Formula One Championship. Thanks. DH85868993 (talk) 06:03, 16 September 2017 (UTC)
- I see that Template:Formula One Championship has now been updated to no longer use Template:F1 for 1981 onwards, so there's probably no longer so much urgency for Template:F1 to be updated. But probably still worth doing, I think. DH85868993 (talk) 14:07, 16 September 2017 (UTC)

grid numbers
Hi again! I'm trying to insert the grid numbers, that is
|palgrid= 096/104
or
| grid_position =096/104 [[Palestine grid|PAL]]
into the Port of Gaza article, alas, neither works. Is it possible to fix that? Cheers, Huldra (talk) 22:06, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
Another thing, is it possible to get the Coordinates linked with a map, on the Port of Gaza page? Like on the Maiuma page? Basically, Port of Gaza is the modern version of Maiuma. Huldra (talk) 23:44, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
- Huldra, added, you can find fairly accurate list of location maps at Template:Location_map/List (last major updated by me back in February). Frietjes (talk) 00:06, 20 September 2017 (UTC)
You mentioned that there was a way to add color to the bars at Template talk:Bar chart but I don't see anything in the documentation that supports that. How do you do it?--TriiipleThreat (talk) 12:36, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
- TriiipleThreat, the bars are already colored in the {{bar chart}}. are you asking how to change the color of the bars? the {{bar chart/bar}} subtemplate has a color parameter, but it is not exposed to the top level {{bar chart}}. I believe the reason for this was that the contrast ratio between the text and the bars could be too low. we could certainly change this but the best way, right now, to have multicolored bars is to use {{bar box}}. Frietjes (talk) 13:31, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
- Got it! Thanks.--TriiipleThreat (talk) 13:47, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
ABA Roster Templates - WHY???
Why are you merging Roster Templates with the articles? FMP Beograd, Borac Čačak Rogaška... -- IndexAccount (talk) 14:01, 23 September 2017 (UTC)
- IndexAccount, see this section above. there has been consensus over and over again at TfD that these roster templates should be housed in the articles, and don't need to be kept in separate templates. Frietjes (talk) 14:04, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

Family | This is the family |
Hi. I've noticed that the "family" parameter of this infobox has gone missing. I think the issue is that there's an IF statement which checks for the existence of that and about 15 other parameters, but which never does anything with them. As you were the last person to edit it, would you be able to fix it? Not sure who broke it, only that it is broken. -mattbuck (Talk) 21:47, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
Puzzle of the day
Any idea why User:Frietjes/autoclean.js is in Category:Navbox orphans? It doesn't matter, but I'm curious. The bizarre thing is that just previewing the following in a .js subpage shows the category.
jQuery(document).ready(function($) { var myContent = document.getElementsByName('wpTextbox1')[0]; function wpCleanNavbox() { if( myContent.value.search(/\{\{[_\t ]*[Nn]avbox/g) >= 0 ) { myContent.value = myContent.value.replace(/./g, '{{navbox|subgroup|above=hello}}'); } } });
I know almost nothing about JavaScript, but I see that the edit notice on the preview warns me that the "The code will be executed when previewing this page." Also, "Templates used in this preview" includes {{navbox}} and Module:Navbox. How does it execute and call {{navbox}} on previewing the above? Even with NoScript!? Johnuniq (talk) 11:23, 30 September 2017 (UTC)
- Johnuniq, yes, it's a known bug that WP shows javascript pages as transcluding templates. there are a few ways to fix it, but the easiest is to put a pair
<nowiki>...</nowiki>
tags in comments at the top and bottom of the script. Frietjes (talk) 13:48, 30 September 2017 (UTC)- Thanks. I guess MediaWiki must be processing the wikitext as normal (and actually rendering the navbox template found in that wikitext, which executes the navbox module). Then MediaWiki discards the result (but keeps the category!) because a higher-level function does special processing for a js page. Weird! Johnuniq (talk) 23:13, 30 September 2017 (UTC)
Hello again. I'm still working on cleaning up location map errors. There was an error from Krasino, Arkhangelsk Oblast. It was caused because the Russian Infobox template automatically generated location maps based on the political subdivision (Oblast). Krasino is within the Oblast, but the map being used was for the "mainland" and this place is out on an island. The template has a parameter "image_map" which the documentation says can be used to override the automatic map. I used this in the current version of Krasino specifying a map of the island. Now there is no location error, but no MARK either on the map. I was expecting a MARK. Any ideas? MB 04:18, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
- MB, the
|image_map=
is for a standard map image without any automatically generated marks. however, you can instead pass a location map through this parameter like this. I will see if I can make less of a hack. Frietjes (talk) 13:36, 1 October 2017 (UTC)- I was wondering if that was it. But the template documentation for the
|image_map=
said it was for an "location map" to override the automatic location map one, not an "image map" (even though it is named "image map"). If you decide to do anything further, note that the default action produces two maps (one of the Oblast in Russia and one of the location within the Oblast), so it would probably be good to preserve this. Perhaps leave|image_map=
as is, and add|alt_second_location_map=
to override the automatically selected Oblast map. MB 14:10, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
- I was wondering if that was it. But the template documentation for the
{{WPDINO}}
Question for ya... I was going to convert {{WPDINO}} over to use {{Sidebar}} but I've got some user who is saying that I will look over the sidebar parameters and requirements before I decide to convert it, because there are specific features here I would not want to be changed.
. Apart from the fact that they clearly need to read WP:OWN, is there a clear policy that points out that all sidebars/infoboxes should be converted to use {{sidebar}} and {{infobox}}? Would be nice to have a WP link to direct them to. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 05:11, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
