March songs
Thank you for being there! I listened (on radio) to the charity concert mentioned here. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:35, 10 March 2022 (UTC)
Now, you can also listen on YouTube, and more music, the piece by Anna Korsun begins after about one hour, and the voices call "Freiheit!" (freedom, instead of "Freude", joy). Music every day, pictured in songs. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:34, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks Gerda. I'm somewhat overwhelmed with life at the moment, and have taken an hour or so out of it to just do stuff I enjoy here, like review lists etc. Appreciate your notes. The Rambling Man (Keep wearing the mask...) 17:36, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

ITN recognition for The Boat Race 2022
On 3 April 2022, In the news was updated with an item that involved the article The Boat Race 2022, which you created and updated. If you know of another recently created or updated article suitable for inclusion in ITN, please suggest it on the candidates page. Stephen 23:16, 3 April 2022 (UTC) |
- Thanks- I thought you would likely be the one to improve this article, as you seem to be The Boat Race expert on here. Joseph2302 (talk) 10:34, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
What? Oh no!
Don't leave us TRM, you're one of the best content creators and guardians of quality on the main page that the project has ever had.
Now, the reason I came here (and any talk page stalker can answer this if they know) ... is there (or should there be) a board for "On this day?" in the same manner as DYK and ITN? The guide says to use the talk page of the relevant anniversary page, but how many people read or watch that. I think a centralised noticeboard would be better. Specifically, I was thinking of putting ZX Spectrum and File:ZXSpectrum48k.jpg as the lead image for 23 April, as it'll be the computer's 40th anniversary, and the first time the anniversary has come around since the death of Clive Sinclair. I know there are a few {{fact}}
tags, but I don't think it'll be difficult to sort them out in the next week or so when I have a free mo. For now, I've been bold and just done the change. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:35, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Ritchie333, thanks for your note and generous words. I have quite a lot going on in real life, combined with certain users who here are so toxic that they have reduced my interest for moment. Still around, albeit more in the background.
- As far as the OTD thing goes, I've been worried about the whole thing for a few years now. It seems that all roads lead to Howcheng who, at some point, might lose interest, get ill, leave etc, and then we're going to be a little bit stuck. I do think a centralised area for discussions and suggestions for OTD topics is a good idea, although I would hate for it to descend into a mini-ITNC and become overwhelmed in bureaucracy/democracy/supervoting.... It works okay right now because it's pretty much an autocracy with Howcheng who knows their stuff inside out, like which articles have been over-featured etc, but we should succession plan and, for people like you who I know suggest some more popular culture articles in there, we need a more open and transparent way of discussing those suggestions too. The Rambling Man (Keep wearing the mask...) 15:54, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
- I've popped in a couple of popular culture references that I think are suitable and have articles that are in reasonable shape. Man oh man, some of the potential candidates I looked at are in terrible shape, particularly musicians and albums. It does seem sometimes that the best way to get an article improved is for the subject to die :-(
- Anyway, would be good to get Howcheng's view on this, but if he thinks a central area would help, then perhaps we should just go for it. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:13, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Ritchie333: I've been saying for years that anyone can get involved in OTD and people contribute here and there, but most days are left untouched. I still keep doing it because ... well, nobody else is, but my involvement has also dropped drastically. For example, I used to check every article in the staging area, and now I'm only looking at the ones that I'm selecting. When others select articles, I tend to respect their choices (assuming the article quality is sufficient), but I do overrule them sometimes in favor of the regular selection criteria. OTD is the least bureaucratic Main Page section and I would like to keep it that way. IMHO, people should be able to read the rules and then just jump in and contribute without having any sort of real nomination/review process. A few people have suggested over the years that one person shouldn't rule over it with an iron first, but I'm really not doing that, and when I invite them to help out, they invariably never do. —howcheng {chat} 07:31, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

- Thank you WaltCip, I appreciate your note. Real life is challenging right now, so that's limiting my time. The "established users" here who have directly and in some cases actively contributed to my malaise and worsening mental health are still around so sadly I'll be just working on the periphery. I'll be around, just not as much. Cheers. The Rambling Man (Keep wearing the mask...) 20:33, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

International goals
Hello, I'm new to Wikipedia and I have a question regarding Lists of international goals. I've been working on a revamp of List of international goals scored by Pelé in my sandbox, but I am not quite certain what to do with the Non-full International appearances tables. I haven't seen them on any other list and after checking who created most of the featured lists in this area, you seem to be the "expert" on them. I simply wanted to ask what your position on them is and if I should put them into the "new" list. Greetings, 11plus (talk) 14:57, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
- Hi 11plus, thanks for the note. I guess the reason "non-full internationals" aren't listed on other such articles is because no-one has quite the same record as Pele! I would be tempted to initially include them as separate tables (with referenced explanations as to why they're considered notable mind you...) and see if the community thinks they belong there. It's probably a "consensus-required issue" here because I think you're talking about new territory. Cheers. The Rambling Man (Keep wearing the mask...) 19:58, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi. I want Federico Gatti be a FA. This article is already being GA Reviewed (by someone who's not very active, feel free to review it) but I constantly improve its content (I'd nominated the article for GA on 9 February but I've since then really improved it - look here). Can you teach me how to make it a FA? Dr Salvus 21:52, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
- Dr Salvus I can probably help a little. I'm a bit hit-and-miss around here at the moment, and today is particularly difficult as its my birthday, but I'll see if I can make some time for you, even if it's to provide some pre-FAC review notes. The article The Boat Race 2022 you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:The Boat Race 2022 for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. 1987 FA Cup Final scheduled for TFA

The 1987 FA Cup Final was an association football match between Coventry City and Tottenham Hotspur on 16 May 1987 at Wembley Stadium in London to determine the winner of the 1986–87 FA Cup. Neil Midgley refereed the match in front of a crowd of 96,000. Two minutes after kick-off, Tottenham took the lead with a headed goal by Clive Allen. The scores were level seven minutes later when Dave Bennett scored for Coventry. Five minutes before half-time a free kick was touched on by Gary Mabbutt to again give Tottenham the lead. Keith Houchen equalised for Coventry with a diving header, the only goal of the second half; this was later selected as the BBC Goal of the Season. During extra time a cross from a Coventry player looped off the left knee of Tottenham's Gary Mabbutt for an own goal resulting in a final score of 3–2 to Coventry. BBC commentator John Motson called the match "the finest Cup Final I've had the pleasure of commentating on".

Two teams going at each other pretty much from minute 1 to minute 120, and trust me, plenty of the tackles would have been yellow, if not red cards these days! Your comments about mass shootings in the US
Just amazing. The Rambling Man (Keep wearing the mask...) 17:39, 3 June 2022 (UTC) |
- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Hi TRM. I'm here to ask you to cool it with your comments about mass shootings in the US. I agree with your points, but you've made them very, very often--in fact, it seems like you make them literally every opportunity you get; not only every time a mass shooting proposal is made, but also in the current discussion at WT:ITN about civility (which is ironic), where your comments are completely off-topic. I've already hatted them, but you reverted me. You already know that your comments upset a number of our colleagues; I'm not sure why you persist. (Don't you care about not upsetting your colleagues? Don't you realize some of the people you're talking to may have lost loved ones in a mass shooting in the US?) But more to the point, your comments derail conversations, such as the one going on at WT:ITN -- where, again, we agree -- and make it difficult or impossible for people to have a productive discussion. I'm sure your comments are scaring off at least some editors from even participating in these discussions. Please stop; it's WP:POLEMIC and WP:SOAPBOXing (if you need some all-caps bluelinks), but it's also just very counterproductive to the goal of building an encyclopedia. We must be able to collaborate in order to do so, and that means we must be able to have welcoming, productive conversations. It'd be great if you reinstated the {{hat}} (if you want to adjust its placement to include other things you think are off-topic, that's fine with me). Thanks for reading, Levivich 17:11, 3 June 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, but no I won't stop commenting against the posting of the regular slaughter of children in America. It's commonplace and not newsworthy. You need to hat whole conversations, not just elements of those which you personally find to be "scaring" people. We're here to build an encyclopedia, not wring our hands and hope and pray for better things to come. Thanks for your comment though, appreciate the thoughtfulness. The Rambling Man (Keep wearing the mask...) 17:12, 3 June 2022 (UTC)
- And no, I can't very well hat comments in conversations with which I disagree but in which I've participated can I? That would be absurd. The Rambling Man (Keep wearing the mask...) 17:12, 3 June 2022 (UTC)
- But you can un-hat them? Levivich 17:14, 3 June 2022 (UTC)
- Of course, censoring just one aspect of a conversation is patently absurd, so leaving it for all to see is the only way forward. If you want to do it properly, cap the whole thing, or leave it alone. I don't think I need to explain WP:CIR but if I really have to, let me know. The Rambling Man (Keep wearing the mask...) 17:16, 3 June 2022 (UTC)
- It really makes no sense that you think your participation prevents you from hatting, but doesn't prevent you from unhatting. What is "the whole thing" in your view? Because I only hatted those comments that I felt were off-topic. (The ones above the hat were directly on topic.) So what other comments are off-topic in your view? Levivich 17:17, 3 June 2022 (UTC)
- Honestly, perhaps I should link WP:INVOLVED? I'm not clear what you don't understand here. Your objection seems to be about my personal comments on mass shootings in the US but on no-one else's comments on mass shootings in the US, so you hatted a couple of my comments but nothing else. How bizarre. Just leave it alone if I were you. Or wrap the whole thing up. But don't cherry pick the things you personally dislike to censor. The Rambling Man (Keep wearing the mask...) 17:20, 3 June 2022 (UTC)
- WP:INVOLVED applies to admins, which neither of us are. But even if we're talking about the spirit of involved, if involved prevents you from taking an action, it would also prevent you from undoing that same action when someone else takes it. If you're too "involved" to hat, then you're too "involved" to unhat. (I don't believe either of us are too "involved" to hat or unhat, nor do I believe that "involved" even applies to hatting, as it's not an admin action.) If you want to describe things that I think are off-topic as things I "personally dislike", and you want to describe hatting as censoring, then yeah, people are going to hat things that they personally dislike if they think they're off-topic. I mean, what else would anyone ever hat, other than things they think should be hatted?
- Anyway, you're the one who said
If you want to do it properly, cap the whole thing, or leave it alone.
What is "the whole thing"? Levivich 17:25, 3 June 2022 (UTC)- Well I'm sure you know that means any discussion on mass shootings which presumably you find off-topic here. The Rambling Man (Keep wearing the mask...) 17:26, 3 June 2022 (UTC)
- OK, I will hat "the whole thing", meaning "any discussion on mass shootings which I find off-topic here". Sound good? Levivich 17:27, 3 June 2022 (UTC)
- Well presumably that comprises the comments from me you found personally objectionable and nothing else, once again. This is a pointless conversation. The Rambling Man (Keep wearing the mask...) 17:28, 3 June 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, that's correct. Per your suggestion, I've reinstated the hat of any discussion on mass shootings that I find off-topic. Cheers, Levivich 17:36, 3 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi TRM - hope this finds you well. Would you be up for nominating Steve Davis again when we both have a slot free? Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 13:53, 7 June 2022 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) not to put too much of a dampener on this, but I did oppose the last Davis FAC because I felt there wasn't enough prose relative to his stature and longevity, comparing to for example Milos Raonic and Mark Selby. It doesn't look like the article has been added to very significantly since last year, so I would probably be liable to renew my opposition unfortunately. Perhaps you plan a big expansion though, in which case happy to look again. Cheers — Amakuru (talk) 14:33, 7 June 2022 (UTC)
- Selby was also on my list alongside Rodney Baggins, although I can't see much in terms of a career summary there. I could add something similar to the tennis "rivalries and contemporaries" here, although pure head-to-head results isn't all that helpful, and pure stats like in that article aren't something you'll find for snooker. Maybe it just needs a little expansion of "Legacy". Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 14:47, 7 June 2022 (UTC)
