Arnold Oehlrich has been nominated for Did You Know
![]() | Hello, Jweiss11. Arnold Oehlrich, an article you either created or to which you significantly contributed, has been nominated to appear on Wikipedia's Main Page as part of Did you know![]() |
Hello, Jweiss11,
This template actually was created prior to the other one and has a fuller page history so I've removed the CSD tag. There must be a better way to determine which is the better template. Liz Read! Talk! 03:06, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Liz: This template is misnamed. Note the missing colon, which puts it in the article space. It just needs to be deleted. Jweiss11 (talk) 03:21, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

1953 college football season
Your last edit caused a parser limit - the article won't render due to >500 parser calls. It looks like this must be split now. MB 19:49, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
- I know. 1952 and 1954 are just over the limit too. The articles don't need to be split. We need to create more team seasons article, which will reduced the calls to Template:Cfb link. Jweiss11 (talk) 19:53, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

1973 college football season
I'm moving through Middle Tennessee State's football seasons and I noticed that the Middle Tennessee State's media guide had the first game against Tennessee State was played at Vanderbilt, not Tennessee State. Pre-WWII locale of Nickerson Field
Pinning down the pre-WWII location of old Nickerson Field proves difficult. Some years, the site is listed as Weston, MA. Other years, it's Auburndale, MA. And across years, it's frequently listed as being in Riverside. I'm trying to follow the sources year by year, but it's a challenge. Any insights? Cbl62 (talk) 01:29, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
- There doesn't seen to be a municipality in Massachusetts called Riverside, so I think that was the name of the neighborhood or park around there. Google Maps shows a Riverside Park near there and there's Riverside station (MBTA) in Auburndale pretty close by. Between Weston and Auburndale, I'd lean toward Weston as that seems to be more common. Would be best to see if we can gather some more details about "Old Nickerson Field" and potentially break it out from Nickerson Field, which is a totally different structure. Jweiss11 (talk) 01:50, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
- FWIW, Riverside Park and the Riverside station appear to be outside the city limits of both Auburndale and Weston -- but closer to Auburndale than to Weston. It's also possible there was more than one Old Nickerson Field. Auburndale seems like the more common reference in the late 1920s, early 1930s, and Weston in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Maybe an inquiry to the BU archives? Cbl62 (talk) 02:31, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
- On a related note, it appears the BU football team was known as the "Pioneers" only for a relatively brief period from 1928 to 1932, with "Terriers" being the common name both before and after. (Both names were in use in 1928 with "Pioneers" more common.) Cbl62 (talk) 02:37, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

College Football Data Warehouse way back machine vs school data
I've been working on Cincinnati's missing games and noticed in 1907 the college football data warehouse way back machine has them for 2 games, but Cincinnati's history has them as not playing in 1907. Who is right?Pvmoutside (talk) 19:32, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
- I would refrain from creating an article for 1907 unless you can find other sources (e.g. contemporary newspaper accounts) that establish that Cincinnati played that season and give significant coverage. Jweiss11 (talk) 19:40, 4 March 2022 (UTC)

Thanks!
...for your interview with John Stossel. You were able to verbalize and bring a light to a very serious problem. I couldn't agree more. Thank you for giving a voice to these issues! Reference: [1]. Buffs (talk) 16:40, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
- I thought Stossel's piece showed a better understanding of how Wikipedia actually works than many I've seen in conservative media, and I wonder if that was partially down to your influence. I hope so! I mostly disagree with his conclusions, but at least he made his points in a reasonable way. Ganesha811 (talk) 12:53, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
- Great job on making your points...I enjoyed your perspective and also agree with it, even though I tend to the liberal side in politics....Pvmoutside (talk)⁓
Disappointing
The video called for defunding of our project. I found that very disappointing, to say the least.
Your well-made call for more editors representing all sides of the debate should have been the focus, but Stossel did not emphasize it clearly enough.
I think you missed two crucial points on your political commentary, namely that:
- academia leans left-wing, and
- the left-wing leans academic
The first point means the weight of our highest quality pool of sources leans left. And the second is about our editor pool: this 2 min video of Bertrand Russell ("…ask yourself only, what are the facts…") shows the mentality driving many left-leaning Wikipedia editors, a mentality which is less prevalent on the right.
This is structural to our society. It is much bigger than us here, or even this era. It was a large part of the reason for the Nazi book burnings too.
Making Wikipedia into a scapegoat for the above is irresponsible, and frankly very damaging.

Template:1946 Ivy League football standings
A heads up -- At least by the post-WWII years, the sources are pretty clear that the Ivy League was recognized as an official conference and the schools were not included in lists of "independents". Accordingly, I've started the conversion process with the 1946 season work that I currently have in process. Cbl62 (talk) 16:07, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
- As an example, The Official NCAA Football Guide for 1946 includes "Ivy League" standings at p. 98. Cbl62 (talk) 16:10, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
- See also Grantland Rice, AP, NANA. Cbl62 (talk) 16:12, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads up on this. Yeah, I've seen pre-1956 mention of the Ivy League before. We should include a reference at Template:1946 Ivy League football standings. Are you working off a hard copy of the 1946 guide? I have the Spalding guides for the 1934 and 1935 seasons. I've done a lot work of the past couple years building out the standing templates for minor conferences. Which conference standings in the 1946 guide that aren't yet listed at 1946 college football season? I know Midwest Conference and State Teacher's College Conference of Minnesota are missing. Haven't gotten to those yet. Jweiss11 (talk) 17:16, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, I bought a set of the guides from 1942-1947 off ebay a few years ago. There are loads of other conferences listed for 1946 including:
- Pennsylvania State Teachers College Conference (California State, Mansfield State, Millersville State, Slippery Rock State, Indiana State, Clarion State, East Stroudsburg State, Bloomsburg State, Loch Haven State, Shipppensburg State, Edinboro State)
- West Virginia Athletic Conference (West Liberty State, Marshall, Potomac State, West Virginia Tech, Fairmont State, West Virginia Wesleyan, Davis & Elkins, Morris Harvey, Concord State, Glenville State, Shepherd State, Bethany, Salem)
- North Carolina State Intercollegiate Conference (Catawba, Appalachian State, High Point, Western Carolina State, Guilford, Lenoir Rhyne, Elon, Atlantic Christian)
- Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (Eastern Kentucky State, Morehead State, Murray State, Louisville, Western Kentucky State, Georgetown College)
- Louisiana Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (Southeastern Louisiana State, Louisiana Tech, Southwestern Louisiana Institute, Northwestern Louisiana State Louisiana College)
- Mid-America Conference (Cincinnati, Western Reserve, Ohio U., Wayne)
- Midwest Collegiate Athletic Conference (Lawrence, Ripon, Cornell, Carleton, Monmouth, Grinnell, Beloit, Knox, Coe)
- Iowa Intercollegiate Conference (Upper Iowa, Central (Iowa), St. Ambrose, Parsons, Luther, Dubuque, Simpson, Iowa Wesleyan, Buena Vista, Wartburg, Western Union, Loras, William Penn)
- Yes, I bought a set of the guides from 1942-1947 off ebay a few years ago. There are loads of other conferences listed for 1946 including:
- And many more. One of the benefits of filling these out is that it reduces that overwhelming size of the "independents" templates as we eventually get everything in their correct spots and limit the latter templates to true independents. Cbl62 (talk) 17:24, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
- We've got Template:1946 Iowa Conference football standings ("Iowa Intercollegiate Conference") and Template:1946 North State Conference football standings looks to be the same as "North Carolina State Intercollegiate Conference". Jweiss11 (talk) 17:30, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022
Hello Jweiss11,
At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.
Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.
In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 741 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 1032 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.
This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.
If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page.
If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022
Hello Jweiss11,
- Backlog status
At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.
Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]
In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).
While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).
- Backlog drive
A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. Barnstars will be awarded.
- TIP – New school articles
Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.
- Misc
There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}
, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:
>NPP backlog: 11172 as of 20:45, 4 July 2022 (UTC)
There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.
- Reminders
- Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
- If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing
{{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page. - If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
