Hi there, needing assistance to change my musician's artist page. It is currently Made in Paris but needs to change to PARIS or PARIS (AU) as per all her music DSPs, social media etc. Can anyone please assist as it is not giving me "move" permission

- Did you not read the link? Article titles follow standard English text formatting in the case of trademarks, unless the trademarked spelling is demonstrably the most common usage in sources independent of the owner of the trademark. This applies to artist names as well. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 00:33, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

on the page Category:Pages with disallowed DISPLAYTITLE modifications
Why does the search in the top paragraph come up with results but the link below the header for searching in mainspace not find the same results? I monitor the category occasionally and it always seemed odd that most of what I found were early in the alphabet, but because I never bothered to remember the lead paragraph, I only just noticed the search link up top. Happy Editing--IAmChaos 02:07, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
- @IAmChaos: Please be more specific and give an example of a difference. I see three things in this order:
- This search - currently 53 pages
- This PetScan - currently 56 pages (including 3 redirects)
- A list of 200 pages in different namespaces below Pages in category "Pages with disallowed DISPLAYTITLE modifications". There is a "next page" link to more pages (approximately 5,770 total)
- I'm not sure what you refer to with "the search in the top paragraph" and "the link below the header for searching in mainspace". PrimeHunter (talk) 14:29, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
- There is a link to an API XML form on the page, that is what I am referring to that is leaving out a number of pages that the two links you provided do not leave out. Happy Editing--IAmChaos 21:22, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
- @IAmChaos: The API link appeared to show articles among the first 500 pages in the category. That's not very useful when there are so many non-articles. I have changed 500 to 5000 (max allowed) and mentioned that pages may still be missing.[1] It currently finds most articles. The API is meant for programs and has a system for a program to request the next page of results. It's complicated to do this manually. Based on the "miser mode" mention at [2] I don't think there is a good fix. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:09, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

Bogotá prison riot doesn't look like it's relevant to have its own page. Maybe better to remove it to avoid Wikipedia becoming over saturated with empty articles. Aquatic Ambiance (talk) 13:34, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

I want to get credit for originating the term "Satanic Panic". - The place to discuss improvements to the WP-article Satanic panic is Talk:Satanic panic. Consider making a better argument than "I want to get credit." That said, something like "The term originated in..." doesn't seem like an unreasonable addition, if the source is good. The issue seems partly not-paywalled [3], but perhaps not the part you mentioned (it doesn't have to be, see WP:PAYWALL, but I can't easily verify what you say). How to add a famous painter Alicia Czerniak to Wikipedia?
Dear Sirs,
I am wondering if you provide me some important details How to add a famous artist Alicia Czerniak to Wikipedia?
I would be glad if you can help.
Kind Regards, Klaudia Alicia1002022 (talk) 07:56, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, Alicia1002022. The operation you are describing as "Adding ... to Wikipedia" is more accurately described as "writing an encyclopaedia article about ...". This is not an easy task, especially for somebody with little experience of editing Wikipedia. Nonetheless, you are permitted to try if you wish: see Your first article for more information - but as IanMacM says, if you have a connection with Czerniak, you need to be aware of the policies around editing with a conflict of interest. But I would alsways advise a new editor to spend a few months making small improvements to existing articles first, while they learn about how Wikipedia works.
- You might find that an appeal at WT:WikiProject Arts (or indeed WT:WIR) would find somebody willing to work with you on this; but there are no guarantees. In any event, again as Ian says, unless Czerniak meets Wikipedia's criteria for notabaility (which are mostly about how much independent writing there is about her, not based what she or her associates have said or done), there will be no point in anybody spending any time on this, as no article will be accepted. ColinFine (talk) 11:05, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
- Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs) · FENS · JSTOR · NYT · WP Library
There is a lack of secondary reliable sources so I doubt if she would be suitable for an article. Also, if you are related to the person involved, there would be a conflict of interest.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 08:22, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
Just a point of information: Admittedly, I can be slow, plus the rush to locate items can be problemmatic at times. How do I create a new page?
This message came from: Kosburrat (talk) 19:34, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Kosburrat: Start by picking a subject that is notable by our definition: see WP:N. If the subject does not meet our notability criteria, it cannot have a Wikipedia article and we will delete it if you try to create it, wasting you time and ours. Really. I mean it. Don't skip this step. If you satisfy yourself that we will consider it notable, then proceed to WP:YFA, and we can help you develop your article. -Arch dude (talk) 19:59, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
- Kosburrat (ec) Wikipedia has articles, not pages. Writing a new article is probably the most difficult task to perform on Wikipedia. It is highly recommended that you first gain experience by editing existing articles in areas that interest you, to get a feel for how Wikipedia works and what is expected of article content. Using the new username tutorial is a good idea too.
- If you still want to dive in and create a new article now, please read Your first article, and go to Articles for creation to create a draft. You will want to gather independent reliable sources to summarize and check to see if the topic meet Wikipedia's special definition of notability. 331dot (talk) 20:00, 1 July 2022 (UTC)

My pictures should preferably be used for articles?
Some people seem to have a misconception about what the HOST policy says about "educational purpose". As far as I know, the principles and spirit matter more than literal wording. The pictures we upload are not only used in Wikipedia lists and articles, but also anywhere. If we look at the world around us, we see that many people will find the pictures they want through Commons, and then use them according to their needs. They might be used for news reports, web novels, instructional videos, travel ads, or even google maps. But someone suggested me that if I want to convince the community, my pictures should preferably be used for articles. I think photos should be useful to everyone, not just the Wikipedia readers. Because all kinds of pictures you can't imagine that may be used by people. Unfortunately, the Commons community doesn't care what I say. When they accuse me of defending my actions, I give up my position and choose to accept theirs. So, I've started deleting my pictures per the HOST policy. Now I'm blocked for one year on Commons. Two admins blocked me for different reasons, but I honestly don't know what they were expecting. If I'm really wrong on anything or could improve somewhere please tell me. Kai3952 (talk) 12:00, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- Kai13952, this is the Help desk for Englìsh-language Wikipedia, not for Commons. But from what you say, you had been violating their policies by uploading files that were not intended for any Wikimedia project, then you switched to violating a different policy by deleting files that you'd already freely donated. As for "what they were expecting" – maybe they hoped that you would read, understand, and try to abide by those policies. Maproom (talk) 12:19, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- I know, but I'm blocked, so I can't find a better place to post a question about my pictures. If you think I violated their policies, then I have to say that I am sorry for making you misunderstanding. I tried my best to explain about my pictures, but they can't accept what I say. Therefore, I have no choice but to stop uploading pictures and deleting the content for a HOST violation. I fully understand that the HOST policy says about "educational purpose" and always abide by it. If I haven't done it, should I follow their suggestion: My pictures should preferably be used for articles?--Kai3952 (talk) 14:04, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Kai3952: My understanding after reading your Talk Page on Commons is that editors and admins there have less concern about your uploads than they do about your behaviour and it is the latter that has got you blocked for a year. There is no need for you to delete any of your uploads, even if that were technically possible. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:15, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Kai13952: You need to find a way to work with others on Commons. By posting here where we cannot help you, you are engaging in disruptive behavior, forum shopping, and block evasion. Please desist or we will be forced to block you here also. -Arch dude (talk) 15:20, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

Technical difficulties
When logged into Wikipedia and using dark mode the main page are still has a white background while the rest of the website is dark. More troublesome is this setting cannot be reversed in browser settings or under preferences in Wikipedia. I'm using the latest Firefox. - @Arch1988: Are you talking about the left sidebar becoming kinda white? I also had that issue. Placing something in my common.css seemed to resolve it. The relevant rule is:
body { background-color: #eeeeee; }
- (Note that because the body has
filter: invert(1) hue-rotate(180deg);
, making the background black in your CSS actually makes it look white. The solution is to add rules that set the background color to some whitish color.) weeklyd3 (message me | my contributions) 20:18, 2 July 2022 (UTC)- Your common.css is here. Editing/adding names to the existing list
I’d just like to add two names to the list of magicians and it doesn’t look like it will be easy for me. I’m not a ‘logger inner’ - or joiner and don’t need any more passwords…
I’ve no one to ‘walk me’ through the seemingly convoluted process. Is there a simple way to present the names for the list? These are well-known and respected professionals whose names should be recognized.
is there anyone who can take the info and update the list? The names are: Abe Warsaw and his daughter June Horowitz (Former President of the Magician’s union, the IBM).
Thanks, Phyllis Horowitz (Contributor!) 2601:404:D400:EA0:1030:6BA1:5899:6013 (talk) 20:58, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Phyllis, I guess you are asking about List of magicians. That isn't a list of all magicians; it's a list of Wikipedia articles about magicians (or, if you prefer, a list of magicians who have Wikipedia articles about them). Neither of the people you mention is the subject of a Wikipedia article. So, unless they become the subjects of articles, their names won't be added to that list. - Please note: if you are related to June Horowitz, you have an obvious conflict of interest, which you must fully divulge. (Also: I thought magicians fell under the jurisdiction of the American Guild of Variety Artists-AFL-CIO?) --Orange Mike | Talk 00:45, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for your quick response. I’ll get their fellow magicians on it asap! 2601:404:D400:EA0:1030:6BA1:5899:6013 (talk) 23:33, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, Phyllis. Please note the following:
- Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, not a directory. This is why List of magicians is restricted to the subjects of articles. It is also why articles will not be accepted unless the subjects meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability - roughly, that enough independent material has been published about them in reliable sources.
- An article about a subject does not belong to the subject, is not controlled by the subject, and may end up containing material that the subject does not like. It should be based almost entirely on those independent sources, not on what the subject or their associates say or wish to say.
- People associated with them may have a conflict of interest, and find it difficult to write about them sufficiently neutrally for Wikipedia, or to limit themselves to information which is available in reliable published sources. For this reason, "their fellow magicians" are not necessarily the best people to write articles on them. --ColinFine (talk) 20:43, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
Sturgeon's ref
In Sturgeon's law § Discussion, at the end of Corollary 2, is a {{ref magazine}} to Venture Science Fiction (currently ref#6). On desktop, it looks perfectly normal, but on the app, the reference is reproduced verbatim within the article. I tried removing the }} after the ref, before realizing it was the end of the {{Poem quote}}. Then I tried moving the ref outside the Poem quote. This worked, but left the ref number (now #4) on a paragraph all alone. I have not published the 'fixed' version, as it looks worse on desktop.
Is this a bug in Poem quote? or in the app? What is the best way to resolve it?-- Verbarson talkedits 21:06, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- Further information:
- The effect happens when (1) a reference is placed (2) in a colon-indented section (3) inside a {{Poem quote}} template. The following section of text appears in the app as shown in the screenshot:
Without Poem quote:
Normal text.
With Poem quote:
Edit: Non-essential colons removed from this reply to avoid confusing the whole issue! -- Verbarson talkedits 22:01, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- Seems to be a software bug (minimal example), also affecting VisualEditor and probably the iOS app as well. If nobody beats me to it, I can write a bug report soon. As for workarounds, I've gone and BOLDly attempted one, albeit at the cost of changing how it looks a bit. Do revert if you think it's too different. Rummskartoffel 23:07, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- Bug report now filed: phab:T311953. I've since attempted a different workaround that should have done the trick according to a bit of preliminary testing, but that made it even worse than the initial issue. Rummskartoffel 15:15, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
Problems with coordinates in title
Recently, my pages that have coordinates with a title display are overlapping the edit and history buttons. I have tried to change my display settings but cannot figure out how to fix it. Any page that has a {{coord|0.0|0.0|display=title}} is not displaying correctly in the top right of the page. Talk to G Moore 21:31, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- @G. Moore: I think this is a persistent issue with the new Vector skin. Do you see any changes if you're using the legacy skin (which you can choose by clicking on "Switch to old look" on the left-hand sidebar)? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 21:55, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

IP Address visible
I made some changes to my Wikipedia page without creating an account first, so my IP address is visible. I now have an account for future changes. Is it possible to remove the IP address so it is no longer visible? Jadmath (talk) 21:47, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry, I don't think so. IPs are in the page history unless an oversighter removes it. It is also unlikely that oversighters hide contributor names, as this would be noncompliance with the CC BY-SA 3.0 license that Wikipedia uses. weeklyd3 (message me | my contributions) 21:55, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

Flag for under-representation of women
My question is prompted by the article "William Beechey". I noticed that the section about his family mentions "many children" but only five are named. All are male. It is possible they were mentioned because they are notable, and the absence of women reflects the Georgian period.
Nevertheless, I sought some way to flag this discrepancy. There is a template "globalise" to indicate a geographic bias, and there are templates related to lack of neutrality. However, I couldn't come up with a template to say "this article ignores women", putting it bluntly.
Is there a way to highlight a gender bias in content? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Humphrey Tribble (talk • contribs) 03:08, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- You raise a good question, but I don't think so. It's a vexing problem, representing women in the past when they weren't permitted to be notable, and even if they were it wasn't recorded. In the case of William Beechey, his male children have articles. His female children don't; they may very well have been smarter and better than the boys, but weren't allowed to develop it; it is what it is. It's a problem of the course and the recording of history, and my personal opinion is that that is beyond our purview to rectify, so I don't think it should be tagged, no. Herostratus (talk) 04:15, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for your answer Herostratus: "There is no such flag."
- Nevertheless, you have assumed that the female children are not notable because no Wikipedia articles about them are included in the William Beechey article. That assumption, in itself, highlights the underlying systemic bias: by excluding "non-notables" we are automatically marginalising women. (Please don't take offence; I'm just trying to address the prejudices we all hold.)
- The article about his wife, portraitist Anne Beechey, seems to have a complete list of their children. Two female children are "ladies in red", suggesting that articles about them simply haven't been created yet. But at least all the children are named rather than giving the impression that the female children didn't exist, historically.
- As a result of my concern, I have signed up for WikiProject Women's History. I will try to find out more about the Beechey's daughters. I think it would be useful to have a template similar to "globalise" so I will keep that in mind.
- Humphrey Tribble (talk) 07:18, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- Humphrey Tribble, You might also really enjoy the Women in Red project if you're not already signed up for it. I often suggest, in these cases, that the daughters' names just be added to the article (as long as there are reliable sources that name them) and I think having those redlinks in there makes it more likely for someone else to be bold and start writing an article. It's a worthwhile thing to think about. Jessamyn (my talk page) 20:03, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
A page I contributed to was flagged inaccurately
Hi, I'm a fan of the band Dead Posey. I've been contributing and citing their wiki page as well as the members wiki pages and today I made some small edits on their main band page and I was falsely flagged as a "paid contributor" by PRAXIDICAE. I'm just a fan of the band that wants to help them anyway I can & I am not being paid by them. I have followed wiki guidelines and have cited all the sources. How do I go about getting this flag taken off of the top of the bands wiki page? Thank you for your time. Poewritesthings (talk) 04:40, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- I removed it like ten minutes ago. Refresh the page. PRAXIDICAE🌈 04:41, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
Houston Apollos Simi Pro Hockey Team
Hello, I just wanted to share some additional information after reading about the Houston Apollos Hockey team from 1979 - 1980 81 This Team traveled & played against the Historic USA Olympic February 22, 1980 Hockey Team that defeated the Russians which later became a motion feature movie. I watched a game one evening in Wichita Kansas in 1979 & was able to be seated directly next to the glass of the Houston Apollos. The Olympic Hockey team played an amazing game against a Profession Hockey Team that night. If my memory serves me right the Olympic team did barely win in the closing minutes. I think that if it were not for teams such as the Houston Apollos to prepare this Historic Hockey Team in 1979 before the Olympics. It is in my opinion the USA Olympic Hockey Team would not have accelerated to prominence they had achieved without the help of the Houston Apollos Hockey Team. I wish some investigation can be done & some additional facts be added to Wikipedia of how important this Houston Hockey Team played in History of the 1980 Olympic Hockey Team USA.

- Hi Kanjishowa21-4. So far, all your edits to articles have been reverted (that is, undone by another editor) because they have not been constructive: they have not improved the text for our readers. So please proceed very slowly and be sure the information you add has a reliable source. We do expect our editors to be competent and to gain experience you should start with simple tasks, for example as listed at the task centre. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:12, 3 July 2022 (UTC)

Recover old account
Hello,
I'd like to log in to my old Wikipedia / Wikimedia Commons account with the username julianmark – however, since I created this account back in 2009, I unfortunately forgot both email address and password associated with it. I tried to guess both, but I always get the error message "Incorrect password or confirmation code entered. Please try again.". Since this is the username I use on a lot of platforms, I'd really like to get access to it.
Could the email address be changed to my current one, so I can request a password reset?
I can prove my identity: This (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Julimark.jpg) is an image I uploaded in 2009. In the Summary panel, it says the user julianmark (me) uploaded this image. I can provide the original, uncropped version of this image. I can also provide my German ID card.
Let me know if you need any other information and where I should send it to. I hope there is a way to recover this account. If it isn't possible, I would also be okay if it was deleted, so I can create a new one with that username.
Thanks. 2804 (talk) 14:10, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- @2804: Usernames are case sensitive and the first character is automatically capitalized. There is no julianmark or Julianmark. File:Julimark.jpg was uploaded by commons:User:JulianMark with capital M. Special:CentralAuth/JulianMark only shows 34 edits. Email addresses are only reset in rare circumstances with far more edits. Usernames with significant edits cannot be usurped. commons:User:JulianMark does have an email address set but I don't have access to it. You don't have to enter an email address at commons:Special:PasswordReset but remember capital M and check the inbox of any old email account you have access to. Passwords never expire. If you don't remember the password and cannot receive mails at the stored address then you cannot gain access to the account or username. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:59, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
I want to add pronunciation
I want to add the pronunciation to an article about an Italian. Do I need a source to even if I'm an Italian native speaker? If so, what kind of source do I use? Dr Salvus 19:44, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Dr Salvus: Yes, you need to provide a source that shows the pronunciation you want to add. See Milan and Moscow for some sourcing examples. RudolfRed (talk) 21:11, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- I'd say if the pronunciation would be obvious to somebody who speaks Italian, there is an argument to be made that it's common knowledge and doesn't need verification, but citing a source would still be better. Rummskartoffel 21:19, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
