Can I change a container category into a regular category?
Hi there, I received a notification when editing Category_talk:Israeli_women that the help desk might be a better place to ask, so -
Currently, Israeli women is a container category. However, it has few pages in its subcategories and seems analogous to Jewish women or Women in Israel, which do allow adding individual people to the category. Also, Israeli Jews is conceptually and demographically bigger than Israeli women, which is not constrained to being a container category.
Would it be possible for me to change the category type for Category:Israeli women to allow for categorizing individual people's pages to it?
Tamar Marvin (talk) (contribs) 04:36, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
- Not a good idea IMO. There are a lot of notable Israeli women, so WP:DIFFUSE applies. Also note that Category:Jewish women explicitly states that "Articles on individual women should not be added directly to this category" (so the women that are listed shouldn't be there) and Category:Women in Israel doesn't have any individuals as entries. Using Wikipidea

How to clear notification section on my talk page?
My notification message history is too long and I want to clean notification history section from my talk page. Is there a shortcut for this action? The Supermind (talk) 13:34, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
- In general, there are two options for your Talk Page, The Supermind. Either set up archiving (see Help:Archiving (plain and simple)) or edit the whole page manually from time to time in order to delete the bits you no longer want. I don't use archiving on my Talk Page but every six months or so I edit out parts of it, knowing they can always be found again in the Page History if ever wanted. on the page Category:Pages with disallowed DISPLAYTITLE modifications
Why does the search in the top paragraph come up with results but the link below the header for searching in mainspace not find the same results? I monitor the category occasionally and it always seemed odd that most of what I found were early in the alphabet, but because I never bothered to remember the lead paragraph, I only just noticed the search link up top. Happy Editing--IAmChaos 02:07, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
- @IAmChaos: Please be more specific and give an example of a difference. I see three things in this order:
- This search - currently 53 pages
- This PetScan - currently 56 pages (including 3 redirects)
- A list of 200 pages in different namespaces below Pages in category "Pages with disallowed DISPLAYTITLE modifications". There is a "next page" link to more pages (approximately 5,770 total)
- I'm not sure what you refer to with "the search in the top paragraph" and "the link below the header for searching in mainspace". PrimeHunter (talk) 14:29, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

- @IAmChaos: The API link appeared to show articles among the first 500 pages in the category. That's not very useful when there are so many non-articles. I have changed 500 to 5000 (max allowed) and mentioned that pages may still be missing.[2] It currently finds most articles. The API is meant for programs and has a system for a program to request the next page of results. It's complicated to do this manually. Based on the "miser mode" mention at [3] I don't think there is a good fix. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:09, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

How to add a famous painter Alicia Czerniak to Wikipedia?
Dear Sirs,
I am wondering if you provide me some important details How to add a famous artist Alicia Czerniak to Wikipedia?
I would be glad if you can help.
Kind Regards, Klaudia Alicia1002022 (talk) 07:56, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, Alicia1002022. The operation you are describing as "Adding ... to Wikipedia" is more accurately described as "writing an encyclopaedia article about ...". This is not an easy task, especially for somebody with little experience of editing Wikipedia. Nonetheless, you are permitted to try if you wish: see Your first article for more information - but as IanMacM says, if you have a connection with Czerniak, you need to be aware of the policies around editing with a conflict of interest. But I would alsways advise a new editor to spend a few months making small improvements to existing articles first, while they learn about how Wikipedia works.
- You might find that an appeal at WT:WikiProject Arts (or indeed WT:WIR) would find somebody willing to work with you on this; but there are no guarantees. In any event, again as Ian says, unless Czerniak meets Wikipedia's criteria for notabaility (which are mostly about how much independent writing there is about her, not based what she or her associates have said or done), there will be no point in anybody spending any time on this, as no article will be accepted. ColinFine (talk) 11:05, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
- Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs) · FENS · JSTOR · NYT · WP Library
There is a lack of secondary reliable sources so I doubt if she would be suitable for an article. Also, if you are related to the person involved, there would be a conflict of interest.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 08:22, 1 July 2022 (UTC)

How do I create a new page?
This message came from: Kosburrat (talk) 19:34, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Kosburrat: Start by picking a subject that is notable by our definition: see WP:N. If the subject does not meet our notability criteria, it cannot have a Wikipedia article and we will delete it if you try to create it, wasting you time and ours. Really. I mean it. Don't skip this step. If you satisfy yourself that we will consider it notable, then proceed to WP:YFA, and we can help you develop your article. -Arch dude (talk) 19:59, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
- Kosburrat (ec) Wikipedia has articles, not pages. Writing a new article is probably the most difficult task to perform on Wikipedia. It is highly recommended that you first gain experience by editing existing articles in areas that interest you, to get a feel for how Wikipedia works and what is expected of article content. Using the new username tutorial is a good idea too.
- If you still want to dive in and create a new article now, please read Your first article, and go to Articles for creation to create a draft. You will want to gather independent reliable sources to summarize and check to see if the topic meet Wikipedia's special definition of notability. 331dot (talk) 20:00, 1 July 2022 (UTC)

My pictures should preferably be used for articles?
Some people seem to have a misconception about what the HOST policy says about "educational purpose". As far as I know, the principles and spirit matter more than literal wording. The pictures we upload are not only used in Wikipedia lists and articles, but also anywhere. If we look at the world around us, we see that many people will find the pictures they want through Commons, and then use them according to their needs. They might be used for news reports, web novels, instructional videos, travel ads, or even google maps. But someone suggested me that if I want to convince the community, my pictures should preferably be used for articles. I think photos should be useful to everyone, not just the Wikipedia readers. Because all kinds of pictures you can't imagine that may be used by people. Unfortunately, the Commons community doesn't care what I say. When they accuse me of defending my actions, I give up my position and choose to accept theirs. So, I've started deleting my pictures per the HOST policy. Now I'm blocked for one year on Commons. Two admins blocked me for different reasons, but I honestly don't know what they were expecting. If I'm really wrong on anything or could improve somewhere please tell me. Kai3952 (talk) 12:00, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- Kai13952, this is the Help desk for Englìsh-language Wikipedia, not for Commons. But from what you say, you had been violating their policies by uploading files that were not intended for any Wikimedia project, then you switched to violating a different policy by deleting files that you'd already freely donated. As for "what they were expecting" – maybe they hoped that you would read, understand, and try to abide by those policies. Maproom (talk) 12:19, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- I know, but I'm blocked, so I can't find a better place to post a question about my pictures. If you think I violated their policies, then I have to say that I am sorry for making you misunderstanding. I tried my best to explain about my pictures, but they can't accept what I say. Therefore, I have no choice but to stop uploading pictures and deleting the content for a HOST violation. I fully understand that the HOST policy says about "educational purpose" and always abide by it. If I haven't done it, should I follow their suggestion: My pictures should preferably be used for articles?--Kai3952 (talk) 14:04, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Kai3952: My understanding after reading your Talk Page on Commons is that editors and admins there have less concern about your uploads than they do about your behaviour and it is the latter that has got you blocked for a year. There is no need for you to delete any of your uploads, even if that were technically possible. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:15, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Kai13952: You need to find a way to work with others on Commons. By posting here where we cannot help you, you are engaging in disruptive behavior, forum shopping, and block evasion. Please desist or we will be forced to block you here also. -Arch dude (talk) 15:20, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

- Please have a look at WP:FIRST and WP:COI, particularly if the relevant and artistic person is yourself or someone close to you.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 13:49, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- I may well be wrong Pedrovali1, but the wording of your query sounds rather like an academic assignment. In case I'm right, please read Wikipedia:Do your own homework. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.195.174.88 (talk) 14:13, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Pedrovali1: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Our articles are supposed to be encyclopedic, not artistic, and targeted toward the general population, not specifically toward young people. -Arch dude (talk) 14:55, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
VMA (AW) 332 -- Information
VMA (AW) 332 changed their nickname to "Moonlighters" in May 1976 after arriving at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, based upon a Squadron activity in MAF Falon, NV. 2603:8080:A702:D700:38F6:63E2:C03A:1A1C (talk) 14:51, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- @IP editor. The Wikipedia article's section VMFA(AW)-332#1960s_-_1980s seems very cryptic about the source of the nickname and does not have a citation for the information. If you know of a reliable source, please add it in the article or place it on the Talk Page at Talk:VMFA(AW)-332. Note that we do not allow personal reminiscences, the information in sources must be published, perhaps in an archive. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:09, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
