Bulgarian cinema is known for pioneering in world-wide animated films, such as the works of Donyo Donev. The start of Bulgarian cinematography is often marked by Vasil Gendov's film Bulgarian is a Gallant. From 1915 to 1948, 55 new films were produced, but limited after the beginning of World War II.
Notable Bulgarian film directors are Rangel Vulchanov, Christo Christov, Georgi Djulgerov, and more recently Nadejda Koseva, Luchezar Avramov, and Dimitar Dimitrov.
