Why do blocks often last 31 hours?
I've seen admins block for 31 hours. WP:31 says that this is to prevent them from coming back tomorrow and vandalizing, but is there any reason why it's 31, and not 30 or 32? weeklyd3 (message me | my contributions) 03:53, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

- If it were 32, I wouldn't complain as 32=25 and 30 is a multiple of 10, but 31 seems an arbitrary number. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 08:44, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

- There's not really any 'magic' to it. The idea is that if someone has some sort of daily routine, the 31-hour block keeps them from resuming vandalism where they left off during the same 'session' the following day. (That is, if someone engaging in vandalism in school, then seven hours(-plus-a-day) later they'll be at home. Someone who screws around on Wikipedia at six o'clock after work will probably have gone to bed before their block expires. This reasoning also applied to anonymous (IP) vandalism, when the aim might be to head off vandalism from a school library or similar shared computing facility.
- On a related theme, the 31-hour block is more likely to be noticed by the blocked editor, and more likely to draw a response from the blocked editor. They may be more likely to acknowledge a problem - and request an unblock, with a commitment to end their disruptive behavior - if they face losing their editing privileges for a second day.
- As Bazza notes, it could have been 30 or 32 hours for the same purpose and similar effect. Which admin originally established the 31-hour tradition I couldn't tell you. There are regular mentions of 31-hour blocks on WP:AN(/I) running back to at least the beginning of 2006, and they seem to have been unremarkable even then. - The first 31-hour-long block I can find is this. The first with a rationale similar to the above is this one. —Cryptic 10:14, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
Need help troubleshooting table sort
I can't figure out why this table here has one row (1.71m) sorted out of place for height. data-sort-type=number

- That's gotta be it. Had not suspected it since other cells with fraction values appeared to sort correctly. On closer inspection, in those Asia's next top model tables it's consistently only the first entry with fraction that doesn't work -- might be useful info for whoever has to debug this. {{Convert}} with
|frac
also won't work for the same reason, so workaround for now is to hack indata-sort-value
on the afflicted cell, or use decimals instead of vulgar fractions. 2406:3003:2077:1E60:C998:20C6:8CCF:5730 (talk) 18:16, 20 June 2022 (UTC) - I reported this as phab:T311145. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 14:39, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

- Yes, but I can't even update the map due to my account being new. Zingercombo86 (talk) 20:02, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
- The maps are likely not conformant with WP:ACCESSIBILITY. Bazza (talk) 08:30, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
- I have uploaded the corrected version at the correct place, and nominated the second file for deletion.
- Looking at it with the various filters of the color blindness empathy test, I can distinguish everything with any filter except in grayscale where yellow and gray are very close in luminosity. (But still slightly different; I have no idea whether people with total color blindness perceive luminosity the same way as I do with a grayscale filter on; maybe they perceive contrast better.) Not ideal, sure, but less of a deal than red-green issues. TigraanClick here for my talk page ("private" contact) 09:26, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
Jean Harlow
Your article says she was born in 1911, but that her father arranged her first marriage in 1908. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2603:8000:4E00:24A0:D53D:777F:3C63:4E68 (talk) 10:59, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
- Please bring this up at Talk:Jean Harlow. 331dot (talk) 11:01, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
- No it doesn't, the infobox lists her first marriage as (m. 1927; div. 1929). If you're seeing this on a site that's not Wikipedia e.g. Google, then it's their responsibility to fix it. Joseph2302 (talk) 11:23, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
Er, yes it does.In the article's second paragraph, after the lead: "In 1908, Skip Harlow arranged his daughter's marriage to Mont Clair Carpenter.".It looks like the article was subject to some unrepaired vandalism; I'll see if I can find the correct info.TenOfAllTrades(talk) 11:30, 20 June 2022 (UTC)- Ah, I got it. The sentence is talking about Jean Harlow's mother - Jean Poe Harlow - not Jean Harlow herself. Skip Harlow was Jean Harlow's grandfather. Skip Harlow arranged the marriage of his underage daughter - Jean Poe, then 17 years old - to Mont Clair Carpenter. Jean Harlow (born Harlean Harlow Carpenter) was then born in 1911. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 11:44, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Jean Harlow#Early life says: "Her mother, Jean Poe Carpenter (née Harlow; 1891–1958), was the daughter of wealthy real estate broker Skip Harlow and his wife, Ella Harlow (née Williams). In 1908, Skip Harlow arranged his daughter's marriage to Mont Clair Carpenter." So the sentence is about the marriage of the subjects mother Jean Poe Carpenter. It gets a bit confusing because the mothers maiden name was Jean Harlow and the subject later used that as her own stage name instead of her birth name Harlean Harlow Carpenter. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:45, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
- (Double edit conflict) It's the way the article is written. Its actually saying that Harlow's mother was forcibly married in 1908, which would tally with the 1911 birthdate for Harlow. - X201 (talk) 11:46, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
- Two points: Firstly, arranged marriages were/are not necessarily forced, and were and are common in many past and present cultures. Although the article says that Jean Poe Carpenter "grew resentful and unhappy in the marriage", it doesn't say that she was against the marriage in the first place. If references (such as the Stenn 1993 work cited for the article's relevant passage) say it was forced, perhaps the article should say so explicitly: otherwise "forced" (which the article doesn't state) is just speculation.
- Secondly, she must have been either 16 or 17 at the time of the marriage: It seems unlikely that this was "underage" in Missouri at that date, where even today "With parental consent, a person can marry at 16". Perhaps someone with access to the cited source could check whether it actually says this, and if so what Stenn's rationale is. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.201.73.64 (talk) 15:17, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

Two questions: please answer
So let's say someone asks a question or makes a request on a noticeboard or something but no one reponds and it is about to get (or is already) automatically archived. What would be the correct thing to do? Are there any good places to post elsewhere or rules about Template:pin section? I asked this earlier here but got no response. Should we make a page about that situation or add something about that to our current information pages?
Examples: [2] [3] (this page isn't watched that often it seems)
and also, why was my edit at m:Talk:Title blacklist reverted? is there any reason that page doesn't have an archive box?
67.21.154.193 (talk) 14:41, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, IP editor. Volunteers answer questions that they freely choose to answer, and sometimes no one is interested. You can add a comment to delay the section from being archived. As for use of the template, just read the documentation. Personally, I never use that template. As for why your edit on Meta was reverted, ask the person who reverted you. This help desk is for English Wikipedia and volunteers here are not necessarily knowledgeable about Meta. The lack of an archive is presumably because no one has set one up. British and American English Spellings
Hello, I came to the help desk because I was having some trouble trying to figure which spelling I should use for a page on A is for Allah. I noticed that there was a word spelled in British English, but there were no other words spelled that way. I was wondering if I should leave the British English spelling the way that it is or if I should change it to American English. My apologies if this is a frequently asked question.
sussybaka6000 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sussybaka6000 (talk • contribs)
- Sussybaka6000 the policy is at WP:ENGVAR. A is for Allah is an album by a British artist, released by a British label, so it has strong ties to the UK and should use British English. Generally a spelling variant should not be changed. TSventon (talk) 15:06, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for clarifying this for me and for providing me with the policy for spelling. Sussybaka6000 (talk) 15:13, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
- Just in case you run into this again, Sussybaka6000, there is a template {{Use British English}} (and other variants) that will often be found at the very top of articles when viewed in the source editor. These tend to get added to set a suggestion for later people to follow. That particular article wasn't tagged that way but is now.... Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:30, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

Sirs, "Serols" indicates me that my "recent contribution does not appear constructive". On the contrary, I find it highly constructive if you accept that a language must be as clear as possible. - The issue is complicated further by the fact that Manuel Belgrano lived in the late 18th - early 19th century. This might mean that at the time regional variations of Spanish were more important that today. I know nothing about the subject, but according to Standard_Spanish#The_old_colonies_and_the_Royal_Spanish_Academy it seems the language was fixed in a standard form (in the old world anyway) during the 18th century.
- At any rate, Serols, I think the canned templates left at User talk:83.60.58.243 were a bit harsh. - Hello, Amberpa820. It sounds as if you and your boss have a (very common) complete misunderstanding of what Wikipedia is. The article that was deleted did not belong to Klinger, and he should not have created it. If he meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, then there could be an article about him. It would not belong to him or to you, he and you would not control its contents (though you would be welcome to suggest edits using the edit request mechanism), it should be based almost entirely on what people unconnected with him have chosen to publish about him, not on what he or his associates say or want to say. Promotion of any kind is forbidden anywhere on Wikipedia. If, given this information, you wish to go ahead and attempt the very difficult task of creating an article about him, you need to start by declaring your status as a paid editor, then read Your first article carefully. You will need to find several reliable sources, wholly unconnected with Klinger - reviews in quality papers might help, and then, having created a draft using the articles for creation mechanism, you would need to forget pretty well every thing you know about him, and write an article based purely on what those independent sources say about him. It is unlikely that the text of the deleted article would be of any help for you, because it is almost certainly based on what he knows and wants to say, and Wikipedia is basically not interested in what anybody wants to say about themselves. ColinFine (talk) 19:32, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
- Amberpa820 In addition to the good advice being given above, in general you can Google the subject's name with the word "Wiki" in the search string and sometimes a mirror sites comes up that made a copy of the article, but never deleted it. In this case, true to ColinFine's advice, there's almost nothing of use in the old article. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 23:25, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

- @Vesuvio14: Which feature are you trying to use and where? It appears to be about Template:Color box. That template doesn't currently have an option to change the border width. Where and how often do you want to do it? If it's just one place then it's easiest to make specific code there without using a template. Or you could use {{replace}} as a wrapper to modify the template output but such a solution can be unstable.
{{replace|{{color box|white|text|black|border=red}}|1px|3px}}

Naming conventions
Just a quick question regarding naming conventions of saints' articles as I haven't been able to get any assistance from the related WikiProjects. Should a subject's native name be used or an anglicised version of it. I am aware that the version with established English-language usage should be used, but what about in cases where there is no real established usage? For example, I recently created the page John of Tufara. However, almost all sources I could find are in Italian so use the name Giovanni. I did come across one or two English sources (which used Giovanni) but these appeared to be translations of the Italian sources. Could I please have a suggestion on what name to use? Thank you so much in advance! Vesuvio14 (talk) 11:02, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
- Vesuvio14 There is some guidance at Wikipedia:Article titles#Foreign names and Anglicization, where the last sentence says "If there is no established English-language treatment for a name, translate it if this can be done without loss of accuracy and with greater understanding for the English-speaking reader." For John of Tufara, I found Memory and Community in Medieval Southern Italy The History, Chapter Book, and Necrology of Santa Maria Del Gualdo Mazzocca by Charles Hilken, 1955 via Google books, which mentions "St. John of Tufara" on page 1. - Thank you very much! Further to that, I came across the page Juan de Ortega (hermit). Should I rename this? Vesuvio14 (talk) 11:50, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
- Vesuvio14 The page history for 2016 says "Mannanan51 moved page John the Hermit to Juan de Ortega (hermit): most commonly known for founding eponymous monastery", so I would leave it. I haven't researched what name English language sources use and several of the article sources don't seem to be available online. I found two wikidata items for the subject, so I merged them. Articles tagged with issues
I stumbled across this page here while attempting cleanup for several tennis articles. I want to start working towards making this page smaller but would at least like to start with pages I have created since I am a prolific editor in that area. Is there any way to get a page of results like this but instead of all articles in the Tennis WikiProject showing up, it just shows a list of articles I created, whether they be in the Tennis WikiProject or not? Draft articles and order of article content
I am currently working on a draft article. Throughout my editing of completed articles I've noticed that the article summary/intro paragraph is placed beneath the infobox on edit mode but appears above the infobox when not on editing mode. However, when I place the intro paragraph below the infobox on my draft article, it still appears below the infobox when I am not editing. Is this something that will change when the article is published, or I am doing something wrong? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Catsandgurdies (talk • contribs) 16:21, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
- Catsandgurdies, which draft are you asking about? Infoboxes are added to the top of the article code and appear in the top right corner when published, see Help:Infobox. TSventon (talk) 19:48, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Catsandgurdies: It will change automatically. The English Wikipedia always places the infobox code before the lead text in the source per MOS:ORDER. You use the mobile version of the site. The bottom of mobile pages have a "Desktop" link to switch to the desktop version. It's a special feature of the mobile version that the display of the infobox is automatically moved down in articles. In desktop it's displayed at the top right with lead text to the left of it. Most editors use the desktop version. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:49, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
My article draft was deleted the moment I created it.
I created an article draft for Yuko Tatsushima, but when I published my draft as a way to save it to work on it later, I could no longer find it. It likely has some thing to do with the IP address I wrote it from being somewhat banned (school computer, not my doing). I am slightly upset as that was plenty of time wasted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vossurb000 (talk • contribs) 18:39, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Vossurb000: Did you mean Draft:Yuko Tatsushima? That's still online. From your edit count, you have not created any deleted pages. weeklyd3 (message me | my contributions) 18:59, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
- To be fair, Vossurb000 created Draft:Yuko Tatsushima after posting the question above; so it appears that they have indeed somehow lost their first attempt and started again. Vossurb000, it is not apparent what happened to your first draft: it would appear that for some reason it failed to save. I think that if you were affected by a block on your IP, then you would not have been able to post here. ColinFine (talk) 21:38, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
- Adding on to Weeklyd3's answer, creating the draft and asking the question here are your two only contributions to the English Wikipedia so far. Yuko Tatsushima did exist at one point, but it was deleted in 2017 for being unable to establish the subject's notability. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 19:29, 21 June 2022 (UTC)

Searching by edit summary?
Is there a way to easily search for edits by edit summary? For instance, if there is an editing contest or drive going on that is using a hashtag in the edit summary, is there a quick way to find those edits?
I ask because I'm dealing with some problem edits all tagged #KMUOS, and I'm trying to figure out what other editors are involved in the project. —C.Fred (talk) 19:51, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
- https://hashtags.wmcloud.org/?query=KMUOS&project=en.wikipedia.org * Pppery * it has begun... 20:07, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
- If you weren't searching for a hashtag (and it wasn't specific to a known username, so you couldn't use this either), you'd be out of luck. Edit summaries can be searched blindly with a sql query, and I or someone else could help you with that over at WP:RAQ, but it's slow. On the order of four or five minutes per month of edits. —Cryptic 20:14, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
Inaccurate number of employees listed in info box
Grand Central Bakery's info box has outdated info on number of employees, and info box conflicts with main wiki page.

63.227.223.154 (talk) 23:05, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
- If you think you can fix it, then please do so. Otherwise, you may want to find somebody who has lots of experience with infoboxes and talk to them on their talk page. I also suggest putting an "update information" template on the page. Thanks! 𝙷𝚎𝚕𝚕𝚘𝚑𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚝 (𝚃𝚊𝚕𝚔) 01:54, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

- This is the sort of non-controversial information that it is perfectly acceptable to source from company websites, per WP:ABOUTSELF. I tried their main site but could not find the current information. If anyone can do so, it is OK to update the Infobox with a new number and date. - @Humphrey Tribble: You can press the 'Permanent link' link at the left, which gives you a link that will link to a specific version. Like: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Help_desk&oldid=1094323337 will link to the version where you added this topic. weeklyd3 (message me | my contributions) 23:26, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Humphrey Tribble: Most talk pages archive old discussions, so if an archive page exists (usually accessible by way of an archive box located somewhere on the talk page), you can use a more permanent link without searching for a diff. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 23:37, 21 June 2022 (UTC)

Reverting non-free image
User:TAC PlazaMaster recently overwrote File:SM Investments Corporation logo.svg. However, the new file goes against the overwriting policy, as it is completely different. How can the image be reverted even though the older version has already been removed? Itsquietuptown ✉️📜 01:24, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
- As with most logos, these are WP:NONFREE images hosted on English Wikipedia under strict terms that mean they can only be used to illustrate the relevant article, in this case SM Investments. Assuming this is the correct current logo (I haven't checked), Wikipedia can't keep the older one unless it was available under a suitable license, in which case it would be better uploaded to Commons. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:53, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
- I've undeleted the old revisions. This is easily public domain in the United States - a simple colored circle and text, however stylized, is below the threshold of originality. I don't know the first thing about Filipino copyright law, though, so it may not be suitable to moving to Commons. —Cryptic 15:54, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

Redirect vs disambiguation vs. Primary/Secondary
hi! I am a fairly new wiki editor so bare with me, I am working on an article on American businessman Jonathan A. Krane, in addition to that article, there is an existing article on screenwriter Jonathan D. Krane.
currently Jonathan Krane redirects to D, I think it is hard to tell who is the primary or secondary Jonathan what should I do? should I create a Jonathan Krane(disambiguation) or would that not be necessary and I should keep it the same?
Seigerman (talk) 20:38, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
- Create a new article titled Draft: Jonathan A. Krane. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:07, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
- To expand on what Orange Mike says, Seigerman: any fairly new editor who wants to create a new article is very strongly advised to use the Articles for creation process to create a Draft. This has the incidental advantage that you don't need to worry about the naming or any potentially clashing existing articles: you name the draft as seems suitable, and when a reviewer eventually accepts your draft they will sort out the naming, including adding or changing DAB pages and redirects as required. can I replace the entire text of a long page/entry - or is this kind of editing disliked or not accepted especially if the topic raises rather strong emotions
To the Wikipedia evaluators (editors?) Upon recently reading the Wikipedia entry or page 'Cambridge Capital Controversy' (is page or entry the correct term?) I found that it is often very unclear; that it gives too much space to divergences on growth theory, even attributing to these divergences the birth of the controversy, which seems highly disputable; that some important aspects of the controversy are totally missed, for example the cryptic reference to intertemporal equilibrium theory by Solow and Samuelson, or the still very neoclassical conception of capital in the famous article by Joan Robinson that starts the controversy, or the absence of any neoclassical reply to the critics’ objections after about 1975. Also, the use of numerical examples renders the presentation much slower than necessary, quicker explanations are possible. Overall, the extant entry appears to have been written by someone with fairly extended knowledge of the controversy but not very clear on some important issues. I tried to elaborate partial edits but found it was extremely hard to correct all the defects with small edits. So, being rather competent on the topic, I propose a total replacement of the extant entry with a new one. The result is a longer entry, but I think a much more accurate and clearer entry. I do not know the procedure Wikipedia adopts in a case like this one and do not even know how to get this new text considered, but the total replacement of the text of an entry with a different text seems a rather drastic edit, even when as in the present case there is no fundamental disagreement on the general message the entry should transmit and it is more a matter of precision, details and completeness. So I would like to receive information on whether my proposed total edit is contrary to Wikipedia’s policies, or I can go ahead with it, or I should first propose it (how?) to a community of editors/evaluators and receive comments and suggestions for rewriting before proceeding with publishing it in place of the extant content. Signed: Mimuli Mimuli (talk) 23:18, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

Mi primer Articulo
Hola quería publicar un artículo acerca de mi empresa que este año ha cumplido 25 años y quería contar datos de la misma como historia y evolución para dejar constancia. Lo que no se es como hacerlo sin que parezca que es publicidad. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tcivera (talk • contribs) 11:38, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Tcivera: Hi there! Creating a new article is one of the hardest things to do on Wikipedia, especially when you have a conflict of interest (COI). To learn how to edit, you could view Help:Introduction and try The Wikipedia Adventure. I suggest spending a significant amount of time editing existing articles to hone your skills. When you're ready to create an article, you would gather independent reliable sources (not press releases or interviews or anything that the company has written) that have provided significant coverage of your company, and determine whether it meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". If so, you would declare your COI on your user page. Then follow the instructions at Help:Your first article, and be prepared for a process that may include months of waiting, rejections, and rewrites, before an article is created. Note that every article on the English Wikipedia must be written in English. If you are successful, then you could never edit the article directly due to your COI, but could submit edit requests on the article talk page. Hope this helps. - An 'exact solution' would start from the understanding the purpose of Wikipedia. It is an encyclopaedia, not a platform for 'business profiles'. You could start by reading Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations, and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/ AndyTheGrump (talk) 11:43, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Azamghani. Unfortunately, Wikipedia is not the place for doing such a thing as explained here. Wikipedia articles can be written about companies that satisfy Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies), but these aren't
business profiles
in any way and they are not controlled by the companies they're written about. So, if you're looking for a way to promote business, you'd be better off trying social media, a blog, a personal website or one of the other alternatives listed here. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:47, 23 June 2022 (UTC)- And keep in mind that if there ever is a Wikipedia article on your business, it won't be your business's profile, anybody may edit it, you won't have control over it, and you might or might not like what it says. Policy question
There is an editor changing "She is the adopted daughter of the late former Philippine president, Ferdinand Marcos and former first lady Imelda Marcos." to "She is the adopted daughter of the late former Philippine president, dictator, and kleptocrat Ferdinand Marcos and former first lady and graft convicted Imelda Marcos." in Aimee Marcos, and making similar changes in other articles, and slow-edit warring over it, and labeling removal of their changes as vandalism (which it is of course not).
There has been no discussion anywhere that I have seen. I'm not sure what warnings to give (except to not label content disputes as vandalism). But do we have a policy on this? Things like WP:NPOV are written about a topic article and don't really seem to apply well to this scenario. Can anyone help? MB 21:30, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
