New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022
Hello CaptainEek,
At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.
Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.
In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 736 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 1034 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.
This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.
If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page.
If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

Question from SeeShade (17:11, 23 May 2022)
I'm having trouble editing a page, everytime i add something to it, it always seems to basically destroy the page. --SeeShade (talk) 17:11, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
- @SeeShade Can you provide more details? What is it that you are trying to achieve? What is the page? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 03:33, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
Question from Sylvesterjay
Hi Cap'n, need your help with some trolls. I am a board member of Atheist Alliance International (you can confirm this here), and a group of bad actors are trying to damage the organization reputation (John Hamill and his Free thought Prophet podcast) and continue to vandalize our page. Yesterday I updated the Criticisms section, and one their little minions, Martin C Boers, undid all the changes. A check of Hamill's twitter profile will confirm Boers is one of his sycophants. May I please request this article be locked to prevent them from continuously tampering with it: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Atheist_Alliance_International&action=history
Sylvesterjay (talk) 13:35, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
@Sylvesterjay: Well seeing as you have a conflict of interest, you shouldn't be directly editing it anyway. Frankly, both of your edits there aren't great. Citing to the AAI bylaws is not using reliable sources and is just trying to win a petty grudge. I won't lock the article, because you don't WP:OWN the article. I suggest talking it out with Boer. Then if that doesn't work you can ask me again. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 15:50, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- Talking to Boer won't solve anything. He's a sycophant of a bully (Hamill) who is trying to direct traffic to his own social media channels. Sylvesterjay (talk) 06:16, 1 June 2022 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – June 2022
News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2022).
|
|
- Several areas of improvement collated from community member votes have been identified in the Universal Code of Conduct Enforcement guidelines. The areas of improvement have been sent back for review and you are invited to provide input on these areas.
- Administrators using the mobile web interface can now access Special:Block directly from user pages. (T307341)
- The IP Info feature has been deployed to all wikis as a Beta Feature. Any autoconfirmed user may enable the feature using the "IP info" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features. Autoconfirmed users will be able to access basic information about an IP address that includes the country and connection method. Those with advanced privileges (admin, bureaucrat, checkuser) will have access to extra information that includes the Internet Service Provider and more specific location.
- Remedy 2 of the Rachel Marsden case has been rescinded following a motion. The remedy previously authorised administrators to delete or reduce to a stub, together with their talk pages, articles related to Rachel Marsden when they violate Wikipedia's biographies of living persons policy.
- An arbitration case regarding WikiProject Tropical Cyclones has been closed.
Question from Advaaait (19:33, 2 June 2022)
I want to make a wiki page for a museum in Goa - It is worlds first alcohol museum page --Advaaait (talk) 19:33, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
- Advaaait Well there are several problems. First, it was a copyright violation because you just copy and pasted the content in, which meant I had to delete it (copyright violations can get us sued!). Second, you had no references to reliable sources. Third, you didn't show that it was notable. Now, those problems might be fixable, but you'll need to start again after reading our policies. It does sound like an interesting place, what prompted you to write about it? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 19:43, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
Question from DINKIN (16:19, 6 June 2022)
How do I get access to the research library databases? --DINKIN (talk) 16:19, 6 June 2022 (UTC)
- @DINKIN You are looking for the WP:LIBRARY. I believe it requires a minimum number of edits, as well as an application for some sources, but I'll be honest I'm not sure what the number of edits is. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 03:47, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

Question from SeeShade (03:31, 9 June 2022)
So there’s some alternative album covers ive uploaded and added on some pages and they’re bigger than the original ones, is there a way I can fix this? --SeeShade (talk) 03:31, 9 June 2022 (UTC)
- @SeeShade I've fixed a few, but you'll need to do the rest. The problem is that in the file name parameter, you had
[[File:blahblah|blahblah]]
when you actually needed to remove the double brackets and jazz that make a piped link, to instead have justFile:blahblah
. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 03:52, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
Question from Fishyfairy (08:51, 13 June 2022)
I have donated to wikipedia for a while and I would like to link this to my profile so that I can stay logged in and not be pestered to donate when I already do. --Fishyfairy (talk) 08:51, 13 June 2022 (UTC)
question re help queries
hi. one quick question, how are the new editors who are posting questions on this page, finding their way here? is it via the Teahouse, or the Help Desk? I truly don't know where any link to your user talk page is posted for offering help to newcomers, so i would simply like to clarify. thanks for all your work!! Sm8900 (talk) 14:16, 13 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Sm8900 Its from the mentorship panel. New users, or some percent of them, are automattically given mentors these days. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 16:49, 13 June 2022 (UTC)
