Patron (Ukrainian: Патрон, pronounced [pɐˈtrɔn]; lit. 'cartridge or protector'; born 2019) is a landmine finder and mascot of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.[1][2] He is a Jack Russell Terrier. He has sniffed up bombs, primarily in the Ukrainian city of Chernihiv (Ukrainian: Чернігів). He was awarded the Medal for Dedicated Service,[3] in May 2022 for his work locating 236 unexploded Russian explosive devices (by 8 May) during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.[4]
Life
Patron has primarily served for Ukraine during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, and he has rapidly become a symbol of Ukrainian patriotism. As of 8 May 2022, Patron has sniffed 236 Russian explosive devices that failed to detonate.[5]
He became famous from a video originally posted to the social media site Facebook. The military dog is seen leaping into a van, sitting on the lap of a Ukrainian soldier and sniffing around debris in order to ensure the area can be made safe. The video was then shared on Twitter by the Centre for Strategic Communications and Information Security, saying the dog's story will one day be turned into a film. "For now," the post added, "he is faithfully performing his professional duties."
On 5 May 2022, Minister of Internal Affairs Denys Monastyrsky announced the creation of the International Coordination Center for Humanitarian Demining, with Patron becoming its symbol.[6][7]
On May 8 (9 in Ukraine), 2022, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, accompanied by Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau, honored Patron with Medal for Dedicated Service and his handler Mykhailo Iliev with Order for Courage, Third Class, thanking them for their service to Ukraine.[8] "Today, I want to award those Ukrainian heroes who are already clearing our land of mines. And together with our heroes, a wonderful little sapper - Patron - who helps not only to neutralize explosives, but also to teach our children the necessary safety rules in areas where there is a mine threat", said president Zelenskyy after the press conference.[9]
On 27 May 2022, Patron was awarded the canine Palm Dog Award for DogManitarian work at the Cannes Film Festival.[10]
