New Page Patrol December Newsletter
Hello Sagotreespirit,
- Year in review
It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

10 | Utopes (talk) | 3,958 | Patrol Page Curation |
- Reviewer of the Year
John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.
- NPP Technical Achievement Award
As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

'Weenhayek language
Hi! I'm a bit puzzled by the redirect 'Weenhayek language. What's the apostrophe for? Also, it seems to target a different article than Weenhayek language. – Uanfala (talk) 23:05, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Uanfala: I assume it's a preglottalized consonant. It's used in the Spanish Wikipedia article as well. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 01:32, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
- Oh, now I it's also used in the titles of some of the works in the bibliography at Glottolog – I guess I should have checked there first. – Uanfala (talk) 01:42, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
Doneli
Hello, I noticed you just put the article Doneli into draft space. I helped its author Mohsen Ghodrati with his last article Dozaleh, and intend to do so with this one. I'll give you a head's up when we are finished for a new opinion. Thank you for keeping after standards! Jacqke (talk) 19:03, 13 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Jacqke: No problem. You can move it back to mainspace any time you're ready. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 19:04, 13 January 2021 (UTC)

Wutung language
Hello, I see you recently (November 2020) added a vocabulary list for Wutung to the page Skou languages. The source you used (TransNewGuinea.org) for some reason uses data from Voorhoeve (1975), which has many errors (it was collected as part of a broad language survey). There is now a PhD thesis description of Wutung (at https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/156711131.pdf) so I will remove the wordlist you inserted and replace it with that more accurate information. Cheers! Dougg (talk) 22:43, 18 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Dougg: Thanks. Instead of completely removing a word list, try to see if you can replace it with more recent data. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 22:45, 18 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Dougg: Done for Skou languages#Vocabulary comparison. I've preserved Voorhoeve's data for historical reference, since it looks quite different from Marmion's data. Eventually we'll need to update all the transnewguinea.org data for different Papuan language families with words from more recent wordlists. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 22:55, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
- You beat me to it! I'll also add the Skou data from the ASJP database (here: https://asjp.clld.org/languages/SKOU) as that is based on unpublished materials collected by Mark Donohue. I trust Mark's materials more than those arising from brief survey work as he worked on the language intensively and produced a very substantial (but still draft) grammar.Dougg (talk) 23:08, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Dougg: Do you have access to Mark Donohue's unpublished materials? Send me an email if you'd like to discuss this privately. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 23:10, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
- Also, the ASJP database does not preserve the original transcriptions, so I wouldn't use the ASJP data unless you can corroborate it with data from the primary source itself. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 23:16, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

Andrey Nikulin and MPdV Jolkesky
Hi Sagotreespirit, I have recently been adding references to the list of Language Isolates, and I came across quite a few articles to which you or User:Degoiabeira have added the dissertations of Andrey Nikulin and/or MPdV Jolkesky. I am worried that we are over using them as primary sources, given they appear in a very, very large number of articles and they are perhaps not the most notable pieces of work. I have started a discussion of the matter at the reliable sources noticeboard, and would be grateful if you could perhaps explain the reasoning behind such extensive use. There have also been questions raised about conflict of interest in this matter, could you possibly make it clear whether you have any relationship with either Nikulin or Jolkesky?
I do not think you have necessarily done anything wrong in adding these sources, even if you have some relationship to the individuals concerned, and the improvements you have made to many South American language articles have been impressive, but you probably do need to talk about it. Boynamedsue (talk) 20:06, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
- Check my talk page archives. I had randomly bumped into Degoiabeira here on Wikipedia last year when he had asked me for help with editing. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 14:38, 28 February 2021 (UTC)
South American languages
Hi Sago (or whatever you prefer to be called for short),
Could you verify which language "Borum" is? I suspect it might be Gueren, which I redirected it to, but is it supposed to be all of Botokudo/Krenak? The distinction between language and dialect in those articles might should be revamped. — kwami (talk) 23:48, 28 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Kwamikagami: Hi Kwami, Sago is fine. "Borum" is generally used as a synonym for Krenak and Botocudo. [1] [2] [3] — Sagotreespirit (talk) 03:57, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
BTW, do you have any idea why Pano-Tacanan comparisons are included along with the Macro-Chaco families in the Je-Tupi-Carib article? Might it just be because of Greenberg? (Please ping me if you answer, I'm curious.) — kwami (talk) 00:53, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Kwamikagami: I didn't write that, and I also have the same question in mind. I assume it's because someone thinks there are areal similarities. Greenberg's "Equatorial" comes to mind. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 03:57, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
- Yeah, I know it predates your edits, just thought you might have some idea, since you didn't change it. I assume it might come from Greenberg's Ge-Pano-Carib. I don't know what purpose it serves, unless it's to debunk Greenberg, or compare Je-Tupi-Carib with Ge-Pano-Carib, but if that's the case we're expecting our readers to do the comparative work, which is not appropriate. I think we should probably remove the Panoan and Tacanan (or move them to the Pano-Tacanan article) and move the rest down to the Macro-Chacoan section. — kwami (talk) 04:19, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Kwamikagami: I had seen that too and always wondered why it was there. It looks like it was taken in full from an uncited source. Without context, I agree it doesn't make sense to keep it in full. –Austronesier (talk) 11:04, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi Sagotreespirit! Have you already seen this article? Being a review article and secondary source, it looks like a perfect additional source to your expansions of articles in that field. Most theses and dissertations which you have cited are included there, so it will also help to put to rest all those objections against using dissertations just because they're "primary sources". –Austronesier (talk) 09:30, 22 June 2021 (UTC)

Draft:Front Row Insurance Brokers
Hello. You said: "Should not read like company about us page or press release."
I have edited the draft multiple times to make the language neutral. In my opinion, the language is not overly promotional or advertisement-like. But I am open to suggestions. Could you please provide me with some SPECIFIC suggestions on how to make the language in the draft more neutral?
Regarding sources: there are many independent, non-Front Row sources cited in the article, including Insurance Business, Leaders Edge, SOCAN and Variety.
Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ArthurRobertRobert (talk • contribs) 19:05, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
Request on 16:10:19, 9 July 2021 for assistance on AfC submission by S Tallim
I am confused with two of your comments: (1) the submission appears to read more like an advertisement, and (2) looks like a promotional resume written by the subject.
Firstly, an advertisement tells the reader why a particular brand of product is preferred over a competitor in the market. The article does no such thing. There is no Mahal brand to pit against some other person.
Secondly, a resume provides information about education, employment history, relevant professional experience and skills. No such information is contained in the article. There is no mention of Mahal’s education or employment history.
The article is a biography, which requires to encapsulate subject’s life to provide enough details to give the reader noteworthy achievements, accomplishments and impact on society. The article does this by providing key noteworthy details about Mahal such as: 1. His personal experiences living in multicultural societies around the globe (Kenya, India, UK, Guyana) was reason government of Canada chose to appoint him to the multicultural advisory committee to foster diversity in Canadian society. 2. His involvement in communal affairs was reason he was appointed by the Ontario government as an advisor on boards of long-term care facility and on the council of a professional body. 3. Recognizing his impact on Canadian society, he was appointed by federal government of Canada to a quasi-judicial tribunal to hear appeals from people claiming wrongful dismissal. 4. He is a published author whose works on Sikhism and plural societies are quoted and or referenced by other scholars. 5. He was awarded Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal, a medal awarded “to Canadians who have made outstanding and exemplary contributions to their communities or to Canada as a whole.” This meets Wikipedia’s criteria on notability as per their own article on this medal: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Elizabeth_II_Golden_Jubilee_Medal S TallimS Tallim (talk) 16:10, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
S Tallim (talk) 16:10, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
- @S Tallim: Again, the draft reads like an advertisement and looks like a resume. You will need to fix the issues as the other reviewers have mentioned. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 20:36, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
I need guidance on fixing of the issues. I am 88 and not that tech savvy. If under section "Public Service" I were to revamp it and replace by following text, will it be acceptable:
Mahal served on the Canadian Multiculturalism Advisory Committee (1990-1994), chaired by Dr. Karen Mock, and tasked by Government of Canada on fostering cultural diversity in the Canadian social fabric. He has promoted diversity and inclusion in Canadian society in general and Sikh community in particular. He served on the Board of Directors of the Hamilton Community Care Access Centre from 2002 to 2006, entrusted to ensure clients receive the right care in the right place, at the right time. From 2002 to 2007 he was a board member of the College of Physiotherapists during which tenure he sat on several of college’s committees, notably as Chair of the Complaints Committee. From 2009 to 2013 he served as Chairperson of the Employment Insurance Board of Referees to adjudicate quasi-judicial issues on wrongful dismissals and entitlements.
Your guidance will be greatly valued. S TallmS Tallim (talk) 16:43, 10 July 2021 (UTC)
I have revised the section on Public Service. Got rid of resume style presentation. Please review and let me have your feedback if it meets your requirements. S TallimS Tallim (talk) 17:42, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021
Hello Sagotreespirit,
Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.
Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.
At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.
There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.
If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.
Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022
Hello Sagotreespirit,
At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.
Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.
In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 732 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 1034 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.
This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.
If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page.
If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
