Welcome to WikiProject Statistics
Some Wikipedians have formed this collaboration resource and group, whose aim is:
- To improve Wikipedia's coverage of statistics and the organization of information and articles on this topic.
This page and its subpages contain their suggestions and various resources; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians interested in the topic. If you would like to help, please join the project, inquire on the talk page and see the to do lists below.
This WikiProject covers articles related to statistics, including the history of statistics and biographies of statisticians. Articles within its scope include those in:
- List of statistics topics
- Category:Statistics and its sub-categories
- Category:Statisticians and its sub-categories
An expandable tree view of subcategories of Category:Statistics is available at CategoryTree->Statistics.
As of 4 June 2022, there are 4,597 articles within the scope of WikiProject Statistics, of which 3 are featured and 19 are good articles. This makes up 0.07% of the articles on Wikipedia, 0.03% of all featured articles and lists, and 0.05% of all good articles. Including non-article pages, such as talk pages, redirects, categories, et cetera, there are 11,268 pages in the project.
A ranking of articles on statistical topics by recent page views is at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Statistics/Popular_pages.
The list of statistics topics is being extended to include existing articles not previously listed and any new or unlisted statistics-related articles should be added. The list contains over 2750 items, including some redirects (18 February 2013: was 2642 on 17 October 2011; 2233 on 29 July 2009; 1731 on 31 December 2008; and 945 on 22 May 2008). The list is not at present very sophisticated and this project could undertake general improvements given that lists are far more versatile than categories. Look at lists of mathematics topics for examples.
Some priority articles that the project hopes to make progress with are those in:
- Category:Statistics stubs (326 articles)
- Category:Statistics articles needing expert attention (19 articles)
Guidelines
Here are general guidelines for different types of articles in the project.
- Consider adding one of these navigational boxes to the end of the article:
- {{Statistics}} (example: Statistical hypothesis testing)
- {{Least squares and regression analysis}} (example: Nonlinear regression)
- {{Experimental design}} (example: Randomized block design)
- {{Medical research studies}} (example: Randomized controlled trial)
- {{Statistics journals}} (example: The American Statistician)
- {{ProbDistributions}} (example: Binomial distribution)
- {{Theory of probability distributions}} (example: Probability mass function)
- Tag the discussion page with
{{WPStatistics|importance= | class=}}
- and (if there is substantial mathematics content)
{{maths rating|field=probability and statistics | importance= | class=}}
- using appropriate values for the class and importance parameters as described here.
General statistics articles
- Use one or more sub-category of Category:Statistics
- Tag stubs with {{statistics-stub}}
Probability distributions
- Suggestions regarding the structure of articles about probability distributions are here
- Include either of these infoboxes (feel free to leave some parameters blank):
- Add an appropriate sub-category of Category:Probability distributions
- Tag stubs with {{probability-stub}}
Biographies of statisticians
- Include {{infobox scientist}} with all known information.
- Add Category:Statisticians or one of its sub-categories
- Make sure you follow the policy on Biographies of living persons
- Add {{WPBiography}} to the article's discussion page (include "|living=yes" to the template for living persons)
- Tag stubs with {{statistician-stub}}, {{UK-statistician-stub}} or {{US-statistician-stub}}
Open tasks
Here are some tasks awaiting attention:
|
Administrative tasks
- Read WikiProject Council/Guide/WikiProject
- , expand and amend this project page or any of its subpages
- Add the {{WPStatistics}} banner to the talk page of articles in List of statistics articles
- Invite editors with established statistical expertise to participate
- Discuss the best structure for article assessment
- Reorganize Category:Statistics and Category:Probability and statistics
- Expand the list above (and this one!)
- Set watches on these two lists to be informed of updates
New articles
An automatically generated list of new articles is available here, based on these rules.
Please feel free to list here any new statistics-related articles that you create or come across (newer articles at the top, please) and also add them to list of statistics topics.
- Bayesian hierarchical modeling 12 May 2014
- Foundations of statistics 2 Sept 2013 major expansion from stub
Any new articles that have an interesting or unusual fact in them, are at least over 1,000 characters, do not have any dispute templates on them, and cite their sources, should be suggested for the Did you know? box on the Wikipedia Main Page.
- New templates and categories
Please add new categories to this list as well as here.

Article assessment
Statistics WikiProject
The assessment is done in a distributed fashion through parameters in the {{WikiProject Statistics}}
project banner; this causes the articles to be placed in the appropriate sub-categories of Category:Statistics articles by quality and Category:Statistics articles by importance.
Currently 5,677 pages have been tagged with the {{WikiProject Statistics}}
template. Of these, 79 (1%) have not been assessed for quality and 464 (8%) have not been assessed for importance.
A log of recent changes in assessment is available here.
