Bangalore is the second fastest-growing major metropolis in India. Recent estimates of the metro economy of its urban area have ranked Bangalore either the fourth or fifth most productive metro area of India. It is home to many educational and research institutions. Numerous state-owned aerospace and defence organisations are located in the city. The city also houses the Kannada film industry and is a hub of sporting events. Krishnarajapuram, officially Krishnarajapura, is neighborhood of Bangalore in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is one of the zones of BBMP. It is located 15 km (9.3 mi) from Bangalore City railway station. Old Madras Road passes through Krishnarajapuram. A lake called 'Vengayyana Lake' is in the heart of this area. The Yele Mallappa Shetty Lake near Medahalli, situated just outside the eastern limits of KR Puram, is one of the largest lakes in Bangalore.
KR Puram is the headquarters of the Bangalore-East taluk and as such, houses many government offices. It is also a Karnataka Legislative Assembly/State assembly constituency. B A Basvaraja of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was elected as the Member of Legislative assembly from this constituency in the 2013 Karnataka Assembly election, and re-elected in 2018. It aims to promote theatre in all languages and prides itself in lending out the space at an extremely low fare. It follows an at least "a play a day" policy, six days a week (except on Mondays). Its annual theatre festival brings to the city plays from across the country, giving the audience a good spread to choose from. Bengaluru North Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 28 Lok Sabha (lower house of the Indian Parliament) constituencies in the South Indian state of Karnataka. This constituency has been known by different names in its history. For the 1951 and every election since 1977 it has been known as Bengaluru North. For the 1957 and 1962 elections it was known as Bengaluru City. For the 1967 and 1971 elections it formed a constituency jointly with Bengaluru South and was known as Bengaluru. From 1951–73, this constituency resided in Mysuru State. On 1 November 1973, Mysuru State was renamed as Karnataka.
Bengaluru North held its first elections in 1951 and its first member of parliament (MP) was Keshava Iyengar of the Indian National Congress (INC). He was re-elected in the next election in 1957. K. Hanumanthaiya also of the INC represented this constituency for three consecutive terms from 1962 to 1977. C. K. Jaffer Sharief of the INC was its MP for five consecutive terms from 1977–1996 before being denied ticket in the 1996 election. C.
