Proposed deletion |
On this page, the deletion or merging of templates and modules, except as noted below, is discussed. To propose the renaming of a template or templates, use Wikipedia:Requested moves.
How to use this page
What not to propose for discussion here
The majority of deletion and merger proposals concerning pages in the template namespace and module namespace should be listed on this page. However, there are a few exceptions:
- Stub templates
- Stub templates and categories should be listed at Categories for discussion, as these templates are merely containers for their categories, unless the stub template does not come with a category and is being nominated by itself.
- Userboxes
- Userboxes should be listed at Miscellany for deletion, regardless of the namespace in which they reside.
- Speedy deletion candidates
- If the template clearly satisfies a criterion for speedy deletion, tag it with a speedy deletion template. For example, if you wrote the template and request its deletion, tag it with {{Db-author}}.
- Policy or guideline templates
- Templates that are associated with particular Wikipedia policies or guidelines, such as the speedy deletion templates, cannot be listed at TfD separately. They should be discussed on the talk page of the relevant guideline.
- Template redirects
- List at Redirects for discussion.
Reasons to delete a template
- The template violates some part of the template namespace guidelines, and can't be altered to be in compliance.
- The template is redundant to a better-designed template.
- The template is not used, either directly or by template substitution (the latter cannot be concluded from the absence of backlinks), and has no likelihood of being used.
- The template violates a policy such as Neutral point of view or Civility and it can't be fixed through normal editing.
Templates should not be nominated if the issue can be fixed by normal editing. Instead, you should edit the template to fix its problems. If the template is complex and you don't know how to fix it, WikiProject Templates may be able to help.
Templates for which none of these apply may be deleted by consensus here. If a template is being misused, consider clarifying its documentation to indicate the correct use, or informing those that misuse it, rather than nominating it for deletion. Initiate a discussion on the template talk page if the correct use itself is under debate.
Listing a template
To list a template for deletion or merging, follow this three-step process. The use of Twinkle (explained below) is strongly recommended, as it automates and simplifies these steps. Note that the "Template:" prefix should not be included anywhere when carrying out these steps (unless otherwise specified).
Step | Instructions |
---|---|
I: Tag the template. | Add one of the following codes to the top of the template page:
Note:
Multiple templates: If you are nominating multiple related templates, choose a meaningful title for the discussion (like "American films by decade templates"). Tag every template with Related categories: If including template-populated tracking categories in the TfD nomination, add TemplateStyles pages: The above templates will not work on TemplateStyles pages. Instead, add a CSS comment to the top of the page:
|
II: List the template at TfD. | Follow to edit today's TfD log.
Add this text to the bottom of the page:
If the template has had previous TfDs, you can add Use an edit summary such as Multiple templates: If this is a deletion proposal involving multiple templates, use the following: {{subst:Tfd2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be deleted. ~~~~}} You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters If this is a merger proposal involving more than two templates, use the following: {{subst:Tfm2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|with=main template (optional)|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be merged. ~~~~}} You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters Related categories: If this is a deletion proposal involving a template and a category populated solely by templates, add this code after the {{subst:Catfd2|category name}} |
III: Notify users. | Please notify the creator of the template nominated (as well as the creator of the target template, if proposing a merger). It is helpful to also notify the main contributors of the template that you are nominating. To find them, look in the page history or talk page of the template. Then, add one of the following:
to the talk pages of the template creator (and the creator of the other template for a merger) and the talk pages of the main contributors. It is also helpful to make any interested WikiProjects aware of the discussion. To do that, make sure the template's talk page is tagged with the banners of any relevant WikiProjects; please consider notifying any of them that do not use Article alerts. Multiple templates: There is no template for notifying an editor about a multiple-template nomination: please write a personal message in these cases. |
Consider adding any templates you nominate for TfD to your watchlist. This will help ensure that the TfD tag is not removed.
After nominating: Notify interested projects and editors
While it is sufficient to list a template for discussion at TfD (see above), nominators and others sometimes want to attract more attention from and participation by informed editors. All such efforts must comply with Wikipedia's guideline against biased canvassing.
To encourage participation by less experienced editors, please avoid Wikipedia-specific abbreviations in the messages you leave about the discussion, link to any relevant policies or guidelines, and link to the TfD discussion page itself. If you are recommending that a template be speedily deleted, please give the criterion that it meets.
WikiProjects are groups of editors that are interested in a particular subject or type of editing. If the article is within the scope of one or more WikiProjects, they may welcome a brief, neutral note on their project's talk page(s) about the TfD. You can use {{Tfdnotice}}
for this.
Tagging the nominated template's talk page with a relevant Wikiproject's banner will result in the template being listed in that project's Article Alerts automatically, if they subscribe to the system. For instance, tagging a template with {{WikiProject Physics}} will list the discussion in Wikipedia:WikiProject Physics/Article alerts.
Notifying substantial contributors to the template
While not required, it is generally considered courteous to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the template and its talkpage that you are nominating for discussion. To find the creator and main contributors, look in the page history or talk page.
At this point, you've done all you need to do as nominator. Sometime after seven days have passed, someone else will either close the discussion or, where needed, "relist" it for another seven days of discussion. (That "someone" may not be you, the nominator.)
Once you have submitted a template here, no further action is necessary on your part. If the nomination is successful it will be added to the Holding Cell until the change is implemented. There is no requirement for nominators to be part of the implementation process, but they are allowed to if they so wish.
Also, consider adding any templates you nominate to your watchlist. This will help ensure that your nomination tag is not mistakenly or deliberately removed.
Twinkle
Twinkle is a convenient tool that can perform many of the posting and notification functions automatically, with fewer errors and missed steps than manual editing. Twinkle does not notify WikiProjects, although many of them have automatic alerts. It is helpful to notify any interested WikiProjects that don't receive alerts, but this has to be done manually.
Discussion
Anyone can join the discussion, but please understand the deletion policy and explain your reasoning.
People will sometimes also recommend subst or subst and delete and similar. This means the template text should be "merged" into the articles that use it. Depending on the content, the template page may then be deleted; if preserving the edit history for attribution is desirable, it may be history-merged with the target article or moved to mainspace and redirected.
Templates are rarely orphaned—that is, removed from pages that transclude them—before the discussion is closed. A list of open discussions eligible for closure can be found at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Old unclosed discussions.
Closing discussion
Administrators should read the closing instructions before closing a nomination. Note that WP:XFDCloser semi-automates this process and ensures all of the appropriate steps are taken.

These campaignbox templates are not transcluded in article space, and the articles that they mention already use more comprehensive templates, including {{Campaignbox Lower Seaboard Theater and Gulf Approach}}, {{Campaignbox Operations to Blockade the Texas Coast}}, {{Campaignbox Operations to Control Indian Territory}}, and {{Campaignbox Vicksburg Campaign}}. I redirected them to those templates, as appropriate for the articles therein, but I was reverted, so here we are at TfD. If these unused templates are usable, they should be used. If not, they should be deleted or userfied. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:17, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
- Keep – The source for all of the WP:MILHIST civil war campaignboxes is the Civil War Sites Advisory Commission of the American Battlefield Protection Program, a unit of the National Park Service. See [1]. These groupings of battles into campaigns were done by professional historians and not done merely based on geographical proximity. Campaigns factor in the dates of the battles and commanders involved in planning and executing them, and yes, some of them have only a single battle in the campaign. Mojoworker (talk) 01:35, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
- Here is some additional history (explaining decisions made 19 years ago) from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history/American Civil War task force/Archive 6#American Civil War campaignbox templates 2:
"Over seven years ago a decision was made to represent the ACW campaigns described in http://www.nps.gov/history/hps/abpp/battles/bycampgn.htm with campaignboxes, regardless of the number of battles in each campaign. Each battle looks the same now because the infobox is followed by a campaignbox. About four years ago some of the one-battle campaigns were rolled into larger categories, although I question whether that helped anyone. My opinion is that I would rather be faced with campaignboxes that sometimes do not have a large number of links than with articles that have arbitrarily different formats. And I do not think editing dozens of articles to react to deleted templates is worth anyone's time. Hal Jespersen (talk) 5:51 pm, 2 July 2010, Friday (11 years, 10 months, 17 days ago) (UTC−5)"
Hal Jesperson is no longer active on Wikipedia, but I think he may have been one of the founders of WP:MILHIST – it was before my time here – in any case he was fundamental to its early work. The link to the NPS website no longer works, but the campaign data is preserved in the PDF that I linked above. Mojoworker (talk) 02:07, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
- Here is some additional history (explaining decisions made 19 years ago) from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history/American Civil War task force/Archive 6#American Civil War campaignbox templates 2:
- Delete all. For a variety of reasons - some are navboxes with only one article linked, they're all seemingly redundant to other, more comprehensive templates, and none of them are getting any use. As @Jonesey95 said, if they're useful, they should actually be put into use. However, even if they are deemed worthy of inclusion, the templates with just a single article linked should still be deleted. -fuzzy510 (talk) 01:57, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
- I am wondering whether there are any subsets of these that can be merged into a smaller set of templates that actually link incidents related by time or proximity. I don't know the field well enough to know this offhand, but it seems like that may be a more useful solution. If that is not feasible, then delete. BD2412 T 02:18, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
- @BD2412: - with 17 FAs for American Civil War articles, I guess I'm as qualified as most active here (I'm unaware of anyone who's written professionally in the subject matter now that Hal Jesperson and Scott Mingus are no longer active). Some of these can indeed be merged into more general ones, but the problem with some of these larger templates such as Template:Campaignbox Lower Seaboard Theater and Gulf Approach is that we wind up making connections that no responsible historian has ever made if we lump too many together, which is quite dubious from a navigational perspective. Hog Farm Talk 02:30, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
- For those of you wondering, Hal Jesperson is basically the godfather of all our American Civil War coverage and is a professional cartographer who has been published in scholarly books. I don't think the bulk nomination is best here, my thoughts are below:
- redirect Operations against Vicksburg to the Vicksburg one since we're covering the 1862 and 1863 campaigns for Vicksburg in the single Vicksburg campaign article
- redirect Texas Coast II to the other Texas Coast one as the two are closely related to each other and navigation is probably best served by a combined template
- Strong keep the Indian Territory one as it is referring to a completely distinct campaign and the fact that it's not linked is an oversight/error that I will correct after posting this.
- keep all the others as these are the campaign classifications used by professional historians.
- delete Template:Campaignbox Lower Seaboard Theater and Gulf Approach as it hodge-podges together unrelated events in a manner that is both highly confusing and not a relationship closely made by RS (in addition to the NPS PDF linked above {{Cite Kennedy 1998}} uses these exact classifications, as well as several other sources. The Lower Seaboard and Gulf Approach is an absolute dumpster fire as none of those articles have anything to do with each other besides being in a vague geographic area - no serious historian I've ever read from (and I own about 150 books on the Civil War) would consider there to be any connection whatsoever between Olustee and Port Hudson; no template should ever try to make such connections when no responsible historian would. - I fixed some of the articles to transclude the correct templates before I saw the additional discussion here. I think the problem with Template:Campaignbox Lower Seaboard Theater and Gulf Approach is right there in its name – it's lumping together all the battles of an entire theater and calling it a campaign. I concur that it should be deleted. Mojoworker (talk) 03:42, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
- Looking at some of the other ACW campaignboxes, it does look like there's some need for cleanup, although not necessarily these. Template:Campaignbox Operations Against Galveston looks redundant to Template:Campaignbox Operations to Blockade the Texas Coast and I'll TFD it separately. Template:Campaignbox Occupation of Indian Territory North of the Arkansas River is weirdly named; it's a one-off guerrilla raid that in Kansas that wasn't strongly related to the occupation of Indian Territory, although I'm less sure of the fix for that one. Hog Farm Talk 05:12, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
- Since it has been brought up here and seems to be a problem I have added {{Campaignbox Lower Seaboard Theater and Gulf Approach}} to this nomination. This mass nomination may get confusing, but thanks for trying to address each of these campaignboxes. In a few days, I'll try to come back to propose a consensus for each of the nominated templates, unless someone more qualified wants to do so. I expect that some of them will be kept based on the solid reasoning above and that some of them will probably head toward deletion. – Jonesey95 (talk) 05:13, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
- I've listed the Galveston one for deletion in a separate discussion above. Hog Farm Talk 05:18, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
- I agree that there's need for cleanup in the campaignbox templates. I hadn't realized they had become so degraded. I've noticed editors in the past rolling their own campaigns based on their own inclinations instead of WP:RS. Other times editors probably think they are being helpful by combining disparate campaigns together to remove the hated one battle campaignbox without any regard for the nuance that was used in the original grouping of battles into campaigns by the original WP:RS based on location, dates, commanders, etc.
- For {{Campaignbox Occupation of Indian Territory North of the Arkansas River}}, the wording is pretty much the same in the CWSAC Report on the Nation's Civil War Battlefields PDF, which calls the campaign Occupation of Indian Territory North of the Arkansas River (1863). It does seem a bit strangely named, but I'm not sure exactly where the fort was. The southern portion of the current town of Baxter Springs, KS is directly on the Oklahoma border. It's possible the reason the federal troops were there was in support of a campaign to occupy the Indian Territory (present day Oklahoma). The Trans-Mississippi stuff is often not well documented. - (Summoned) I am of a mind with Hog Farm. To expand on his comments on the Indian Territory navbox, I'll add that Texas and the Indian Territory were also the last ACW theaters to conclude and have campaigns very distinct from one another (I think here, for example, of Shelby's attempt to invade New Mexico as compared to the battles over Galveston). That said, I'm not myself convinced of the need for two navboxes for the fight over the Texas coast. I would combine those but delineate campaigns within that theater as is done in so many other campaign navboxes. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 02:37, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
- I'm in favor of whatever makes sense. Thanks for linking to the American Battlefield Protection PDF, which is very useful. However, an article I wrote, Rousseau's Opelika Raid is not listed there! BTW: I added it to the Atlanta campaign, since the raiders subsequently joined Sherman's army. Djmaschek (talk) 03:14, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
- The PDF will only cover the battles that fell under the CWSAC's determined study grouping. Same thing applies to Capture of Sedalia, which I wrote. Hog Farm Talk 03:17, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, the Civil War Sites Advisory Commission's purpose is preservation (note the Preservation Priority listed for each battle in the report), and perhaps because, being a cavalry raid, Opelika was more a running fight, without a specific battlefield to be preserved. Seems like it does fit in the Atlanta Campaign though, for the reason you stated, as well as apparently Sherman also planned it. Mojoworker (talk) 03:48, 17 May 2022 (UTC)

- @WikiCleanerMan: And there are 37 transclusions in article space for {{Campaignbox Lower Seaboard Theater and Gulf Approach}}. I'm not saying that one necessarily should be kept, but I want to understand your rationale, since it would seem to be an either/or situation. Mojoworker (talk) 22:53, 18 May 2022 (UTC)
- Support User:Hog Farm's approach. @BusterD, Djmaschek, Hog Farm, Vami IV, Mojoworker, Jonesey95, Fuzzy510, and WikiCleanerMan: (I thnk I have pinged all previous commenters; I have not missed any intentionally.) I must admit that even though I have been editing and writing since 2010, I was unaware of the existence of the unused templates. Since they have been available for so many years, I might have been inclined initially to say that if they haven't been used by now, they might be of little if any future value. But as Hog Farm and others have observed, some of them have obvious usefulness and could serve to narrow some readers' search for information about discrete shorter campaigns without needing to search through a large number of articles for more targeted information. Every relevant article still needs to be written so future use also cannot be categorically ruled out. If I can ever get back to regular editing (recovering from COVID right now, among other things such as other real life matters, problems working with Huggle and a little writer's block) or if Hog Farm or anyone has the time to look at possible inclusion of existing articles sooner, I am confident that at least a few of them can be used. Good reasons to keep at least some of them have been given by several editors above. So I think the proposed approach is best. Donner60 (talk) 00:39, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
- I consider User:Hlj to be my longest wikifriendship, and he continues to be an ally to Wikipedia. That said, Hal has left us with a few messes to clean up. IMHO, our Battle of Chattanooga coverage is strangely divided, and we have all these properly constructed templates which remain unused. Not his fault; he was doing his utmost to get the pedia up to speed (from scratch) in this content area, and left us his original ACW maps, likely the best gift collection given to ANY task force. His volunteer cartography work here grew so important to us, RL people started paying him to make maps. Now comes User:Hog Farm (whom I think I first met at a discussion procedure for just such a template) who by sheer industry has become our task force leader and deservedly so. I'll take support Hog Farm's suggestions as my starting position, with respect to Mojoworker. We still have some untangling to do. BusterD (talk) 00:59, 25 May 2022 (UTC)

- Comment: I created some of these templates, as discussed here. A lot of these are evidently not used, however I'm wondering how quickly some of these could be merged into the main templates (usually Template:Fbicon). I think all of these relate to sub-teams of the main national team - so Template:Fbbicon relates to the national 'B' (or second) team, Template:Fbamicon relates to the national amateur team, etc. Ideally, there would be one template covering all national football teams at all levels. As I recall when making these, I simply provided flagicon version of all the existing templates in Category:Association football flag templates. Clyde1998 (talk) 14:33, 18 May 2022 (UTC)
- A merge would be fine with me. Is there someone available to plan and implement such a merge? If these are closed as "merge", they can go to the holding cell pending migration, but it is not desirable for them to live there forever. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:10, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

No transclusions. Appears to be an unnecessary copy of {{West Godavari district}}. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:55, 24 May 2022 (UTC)
- West Godavari district and Eluru district are two separate districts in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh so each one needs a template. The districts are each composed of separate objects: cities, mandals, towns, etc. I tried to create the Eluru template and would have populated it, but I ran into a problem. Whenever I tried to edit the Eluru template, the changes also showed up on the West Godavari template and so I stopped. I was about to ask for help, so I am asking now. Thanks. - Delete The idea that editing the original template somehow would lead someone to this template is nonsensical. The creator just copied that template. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 18:31, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
- Not nonsensical at all, unfortunately, from the editor perspective. For some reason, the navbox template uses
|name=
to construct the "E" (for edit) link, which can take you to the wrong template. I have fixed that link. The template still has no transclusions, but if it has some by the end of the TFD period, this template should probably be kept. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:30, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

As with the two groups of similar templates deleted after recent discussion at CfD, these "Surnames associated with the given name xxx" templates show unsourced connections between an apparently unreliably-chosen set of surnames and only contribute clutter to the pages to which they have been added. The various surnames could usefully be listed, with sources, in the pages relating to the individual given names, and each surname page could usefully include a well-sourced link to the given name to which it is related, but these navboxes are not an asset to the encyclopedia. - Comment. In the last one of these, I said delete all only because they were unreliably sourced. The 'similar' names were only similar in sound or spelling but not in meaning or etymology. However, if accurate, conceptually I think they are useful and valuable, such as the one at the bottom of Cooper (surname) which we've used since 2014. Admittedly, even that has been recently modified by the user who has made all of these templates. Surnames have many variants and cognates, and to have a box at the bottom that cleanly directs you to them all is invaluable and far easier to navigate than lists. The issue isn't in the concept for me, just in the execution. I'm only not saying whether to keep or delete because I haven't checked the accuracy of these templates. - @Jonesey95 This is a fake version of the dubious template that doesn't sort the page into clean-up categories and the like, for use in documentation and discussions just like {{fake CN}}. The single use of it is a message on a talk page, so replacing it with a real template would not be appropriate. 192.76.8.94 (talk) 22:49, 16 May 2022 (UTC)

- in other words, a fork. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 09:38, 9 May 2022 (UTC)- The 48 articles references it's specific use. 48 article about the Pan American Games exist. "Only 19 transclusions", as you stated from that original discussion. How could it be redundant now given the expansion of the number of Pan American Games articles? And if it's a fork of the Olympic games infobox, then why not merge both into the Infobox games template instead of deleting it? --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 17:26, 10 May 2022 (UTC)
"How could it be redundant now given the expansion of the number of Pan American Games articles?"
Because 48 is still a very low number; because usage stats are not in any case a measure of redundancy or otherwise, and because many of those instances were swapping one infobox for another (see the example I gave, above), very similar, infobox. What do you think should be merged from this template into another (and why was that not simply added there in the first place)? As two merging to other templates, neither of which are part of this nomination, WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS applies. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:01, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

- @Pppery, what specifically is the disruption? Has someone changed the spelling of words at the article on April 1 because of it? (Note that it includes a clear [April Fools!] tag for responsible disclosure, making the chance of that miniscule.) Has it disturbed maintenance efforts? The nominator noted only that it was currently blank, which as I noted above is actually evidence it's functioning properly (TPH, given that, I'm curious whether you still wish to delete at all). Pppery, as with your other recent nominations of April Fools-related material, you claim hypothetical disruption without evidence. Responsible jokes help make Wikipedia a pleasant community, and I'd rather we preserve them than delete all evidence of them, preventing future editors browsing WP:APRIL2021 from a chuckle they might otherwise have. This editnotice appears one day a year, in a form that could not possibly be misconstrued by a reasonable editor as anything other than a joke. - I'd urge you to place a little more than zero value on responsible humor, even if you don't personally find it funny. We're not paid, so the only thing keeping us here is that we enjoy editing. Many editors find enjoyment in Wikipedia humor, and it motivates them to keep on contributing, so even if that's not true for you personally, you should want to keep it around, as it helps us with retention. I take a very hard stance on attempts at humor that could confuse readers or disrupt editors, which we absolutely need to stamp out, but the flip side of that is leaving completely harmless jokes like this alone. And I maintain that this is completely, utterly harmless—your main argument otherwise seems to be that because you are fighting to delete it, it's disruptive and should be deleted, which is tautological. Please focus your efforts to combat disruptive humor where they're actually needed instead. {{u|Sdkb}} talk 22:45, 18 May 2022 (UTC)
