Thoughts on WP:BLPREQUESTDELETE
Hi, I'm moving here to follow up on the brief exchange that we had at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mary Annaïse Heglar, in the interest of not clogging up the AfD. I think your suggestion makes a lot of sense. Varying interpretations of this policy seem, to me, to be causing weekly (if not almost daily) problems in AfD discussions — I just saw it come up again at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bruce Lerman. And as you noted it's not just esoteric stuff, but will probably come up more and more often, and is causing severe arguments not just on Wikipedia but also on social media, with lots of nasty implications for peoples' well-being and Wikipedia's reputation. So I think an RfC or a Village Pump thread is a sensible next step. The problem is that I don't want to poison the well by proposing a clumsy change that has no hope of making anything better, and I'm honestly not totally sure what I think it should be changed to. Do you have any thoughts about what a good way to proceed would be? No worries if not, I just thought that your suggestion of trying to make sure that the policy is aligned with consensus was a good one, and I want to be sensible about the next step. - Astrophobe (talk) 19:21, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Astrophobe: I agree with you on doing an RFP post deletion discussion -- its always delicate on these things, because sometimes attention has the opposite effect of those starting the conversation. I actually have a hard time imagining, her AFD for example, not concluding that she is a public person -- she is all over the U.S. environmental movement, and is actively promoting storytelling about environmental justice... the whole goal of the book All We Can Save is to promote women leaders in the space... they were included in the book because the editors thought they were notable.
- But I could see a version of the policy that says something like "living persons not newsworthy or of regular public comment yet documented because of their livelihood that request removal", but the problem is that for every exception we make through these requests, the closer we get down the slippery slope of Right to be forgotten. I empathize with the reaction she has on Twitter, but have a hard time imagining a version of these rules that is appropriate for effective (yet inclusive) encyclopedic coverage... But then again, its been a long time since I have spent time in the trenches of AFDs on BLPs. Sadads (talk) 21:43, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

Help on Wikiproject Climate change project
Hi,
any chance you want to help out on increasing coverage and info on this ? Carbon sink upscaling additional info on carbon sink upscaling (missing info) --Genetics4good (talk) 16:36, 28 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Genetics4good: My expertise/skill is more on describing impacts, and adaptations in different contexts so that we help readers see the connections to topics they care about-- I am not sure how to solve that problem in particular. Maybe through: Intended Nationally Determined Contributions -- which is very underdeveloped and doesn't really address this set of issues i.e. it looks like there was a lot of criticism of this from India in their NDC. The other option could be to build something into the Carbon sequestration article. Do you have a specific set of documents/research you want to draw information from? Sadads (talk) 15:49, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
- Sadads, I'm discussing this at the Wikiproject talk page. Refer to that for more info which I am posting along the way.

Excerpt tree
Hi! I notice that many or even most of the articles where you add excerpts are related to environmental issues. Thus I'm wondering if maybe an excerpt tree is emerging already. In the Spanish Wikipedia, I've developed several trees, including one rooted in climate change. Are you aware of the concept/technique? Cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 13:11, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Sophivorus: Added a few, but several are doing something funky where there is no transclusion happening (see the Algae tree). Maybe something is wrong with the method for identifying them? Sadads (talk) 13:42, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Sadads: Amazing!! I hope you find them as useful as I do, and not just a curiosity. :-) As to the bug, I'll look into it! Sophivorus (talk) 14:06, 9 March 2021 (UTC)

A beer for you!
For your work on the Human overpopulation article. I keep seeing it pop up on my watchlist and you have been extending effort there for some time now. Seems like monumental task! :) S0091 (talk) 22:22, 13 March 2021 (UTC) |
- It really bothers me -- because some of the research is legitimate, but some of the way in which its is currently compiled on the article is as if the "statistics" result in an "obvious" conclusion -- which is not the case when you read up on this stuff :P Also, now that Buzle is blocked I am feeling a bit more liberty in removing the marginal stuff -- hopefully whoever comes along in the future can actually summarize the scholarship that does specific attribution arguments -- and describe it as an argument :P Its going to require some really careful, careful reading of the content we have though -- its sloppy at best, Sadads (talk) 22:29, 13 March 2021 (UTC)
Fertilizer
If you wish to discuss fertilizer article, I am very happy to so. It is a very large area of culture and technology, and like all large topics, it includes many controversies. It seems inappropriate to introduce the topic from the perspective of Mother Jones, which is not exactly NPOV journal. In any case I will be around. --Smokefoot (talk) 14:02, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
BR-319
Do not do experiments, as you did in the article BR-319. The article is a translation of the Portuguese version (native language of the object in question). You removed the road map, reliable sources from the main Brazilian newspapers and all kinds of unacceptable vandalism. Restrain yourself or it will be a reason to ask for your block. Rauzaruku (talk) 15:39, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
- I replaced text brought from the Wiki in Portuguese, written mostly by the user Naldo Arruda, who lives in the Amazon region (therefore, has much more reliability to write about this BR than any user who lives outside Brazil and only reads biased information and partial by the world press), was supervised by Wiki administrators in Portuguese and the version there is considered neutral and informative enough not to be disputed by anyone. You want to start a purposeful R3R fight, right? Your will is visible. Rauzaruku (talk) 16:44, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @Rauzaruku: I am an admin on English Wikipedia -- I don't respond well to threats. Consensus on Portuguese Wikipedia does not stand for consensus on English. We leave ecological content on English Wikipedia because it is part of the economic impact of a topic (including very controversial highways). Sadads (talk) 16:46, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
- The whole ecological issue is addressed in the text you deleted. To repeat: this text that you deleted, in addition to being written by a RESIDENT OF THE REGION, has communist sources such as O Globo and Folha de São Paulo, who are totally interested in destroying Jair Bolsonaro. You better stop thinking that the article should be yours just because you are an administrator or not. It is not your job. Rauzaruku (talk) 16:51, 25 March 2021 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Flight test flights of the United States Air Force
A tag has been placed on Category:Flight test flights of the United States Air Force requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! Overpopulation
Sadads, I think you are a bit overzealous with your edits, especially deletions. The link to the Global Footprint Network is directly relevant to human overpopulation, so please explain why you deleted the link. You are right that there are other organizations, and they should and will be added later too. So, instead of just deleting stuff, just add others, if think they should be treated equally. Thanks, Peteruetz (talk) 17:41, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Peteruetz: See also sections are not for a list of everything that could be possibly related to a topic (that is what categories are for) -- you should have a direct discussion of the topic in the article if it rises to the point of analysis. See MOS:SEEALSO -- but the general guidance is not to include everything that could possibly be include. For organizations like Global Footprint -- there should be direct discussion of the entity in the article or a new section on organizations supporting arguments about overpopulation. See also sections aren't just arbitrary dumping grounds of "kindof related" stuff, Sadads (talk) 17:50, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
- Besides, you have already worked on a list that is focused on these issues: List of population concern organizations, Sadads (talk) 19:13, 4 April 2021 (UTC)

Fabrickator (talk) 05:35, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Fabrickator Only two of the four were inappropriate among the ones you point at, and the error rate among others is quite low, I usually don't have that high of an error rate -- so not sure what you are talking about, Sadads (talk) 11:48, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
- Guess I'm a little more particular. For instance, this seems confusing:
- which probably should have been (ignoring wikilinking)
- n-carbon sequestration
- to begin with.
FWIW, I have seen other cases where only the word "sequester" or "sequestration" (adjacent to "carbon") was hyperlinked to "carbon sequestration". That makes good sense to me, e.g.
- the advantages of carbon sequestration include...
But that still leaves open the issue: when nothing is wrong to start with, what is the number of errors that it's okay to introduce? Fabrickator (talk) 15:29, 20 April 2021 (UTC) (revised comment)

Julius Nyerere Hydropower Station
What more would you like to see in the lead in the article Julius Nyerere Hydropower Station? --Bejnar (talk) 16:11, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Bejnar So at first glance, there is no coverage of two major sections: Risks to operation and Negative Impacts, moreover, I would expect at least a few sentences about the history section. For the length of the article, I would expect at least 3 4-5 sentence paragraphs, Sadads (talk) 16:25, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for your prompt response. I could see more historical coverage than simply stating that it was controversial, albeit much of the history is overly detailed for an encyclopedia entry. I could break out that one lead paragraph by topic. Fifteen sentences for this lead seems a bit profuse from my angle, but I'll see what I can do. --Bejnar (talk) 17:09, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

Plastic recycling
Hi, I actually proposed the re-write on the talk page about a week ago - as I am aware that changes of this sort can be contention - but I received no response to it. --Project Osprey (talk) 12:49, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
- Hey -- 5 days without notifying recent editors on a talk page just isn't enough time -- for example, I was mostly away from doing significant attention t enwiki for that period -- recommendation for the future: when rebuilding a page, do it in a series of small (i.e. section rebuilds) so its easier to read in the diff. I left some first feedback at: Talk:Plastic_recycling#Proposing_a_re-write. Sadads (talk) 12:52, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
- Realized I didn't @Project Osprey: -- I mostly have a lot of questions, but just can't read it in the diff right now -- neither visual or traditional diffs make sense to me in the way in which you added the overhaul. A section by section insertion of stuff, and some thinking about the questions I have there, would be helpful, Sadads (talk) 13:01, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
- Sorry, I've been working on the re-write for about a month. I found that waiting a full week once I was done was too much for my patience. At least I'm getting some feedback now! --Project Osprey (talk) 13:37, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Project Osprey Oh no worries, and I have totally been semi-absent on the topics (real life wore me out a couple weeks ago, and am just now recovering, still a little slow to work on some of this stuff, but I have a week off next week so I might be doing some more serious editing :P Sadads (talk) 23:39, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- Well it is supposed to be a hobby, even if it doesn't always feel that way. I am trying to make the changes gradually over a number of days so you're able to keep an eye on the process. I normally edit chemistry pages, which obviously have a limited audience but this is a lot more important to our readers to I'm determined to get it right. --Project Osprey (talk) 14:11, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
- Part of the challenge is that the community is also my job (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Astinson_(WMF)) so when I have work/real life stress, it really doesn't make sense for me to also volunteer :P
- I think most of the writing on the article seems right, and its super interesting to see more of the technical processes get fleshed out -- and I have next week off -- so I am going to wrap my head around how I can help. I am mostly a cultural studies and social science person -- doing a lot of climate communication in the last year or two -- but I am super aware how much a well researched body of science needs to sit under the stuff that also activates people's emotions/interests. Sadads (talk) 22:07, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
- I have some sympathy. I'm a chemist who edits about chemistry, so my job is my hobby. If get fed-up with one I can find that I'm fed-up with both. We sounds like a good combination for this, as it's a technology rooted in cultural behaviours. I'm coming to the end of the tech sections so it's just the more social stuff now: history, lead, current statistics. I'll probably move a bit slower here. Do enjoy your break but if you want to read about some environmentalism there's a nice open-access review just out doi:10.1016/j.apenergy.2020.114848. --Project Osprey (talk) 13:58, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

I think I'm largely done with this for now, unless there's any other work you think needs doing? I'm thinking of submitting it for copy editing, as I keep finding my own typos, but the page needs to be stable for that. Just checking. --Project Osprey (talk) 09:18, 17 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Project Osprey I think its in a good place -- I am doing some careful reading as well for clarity -- but someone who doesn't have a connection to the topic is much more likely to catch these grammatical things. Sadads (talk) 20:13, 17 June 2021 (UTC)
- It's certainly better than when we started. I've requested ce from the Guild of Copy Editors, although it'll probably take at least a week to move through the system. Thanks for all your help. --Project Osprey (talk) 22:44, 17 June 2021 (UTC)

You deserve the Barnstar of appreciation but I failed to find it. Tima93Lb (talk) 09:22, 18 June 2021 (UTC) |

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021
News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).
Interface administrator changes
|
|
- Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
- An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.
- IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.
- The community authorised COVID-19 general sanctions have been superseded by the COVID-19 discretionary sanctions following a motion at a case request. Alerts given and sanctions placed under the community authorised general sanctions are now considered alerts for and sanctions under the new discretionary sanctions.

- An RfC is open to add a delay of one week from nomination to deletion for G13 speedy deletions.
- Last week all wikis were very slow or not accessible for 30 minutes. This was due to server lag caused by regenerating dynamic lists on the Russian Wikinews after a large bulk import. (T287380)
- Following an amendment request, the committee has clarified that the Talk page exception to the 500/30 rule in remedy 5 of the Palestine-Israel articles 4 case does not apply to requested move discussions.
- You can vote for candidates in the 2021 Board of Trustees elections from 4 August to 17 August. Four community elected seats are up for election.
lang=en in English articles?
Not important but just curious why we need "lang=en" for cites in English language articles? Chidgk1 (talk) 18:47, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
- Because that variable helps tools evaluate what kind of source it is -- i.e. archiving by internet archive, eventually converting the sources into structured data (i.e. shared citations or Wikidata citations). It never hurts to have too much metadata, even if its not presented on the page, Sadads (talk) 18:57, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
Empire of the Moghuls
An administrator removed content from the article Empire of the Moghul stating that it is copyrighted. Should I add it back? ChikaToFlika (talk) 10:54, 17 August 2021 (UTC)
- @ChikaToFlika The back cover of a book is copyrighted text see A summary needs to be originally written by Wikimedia contributors. Sadads (talk) 12:46, 17 August 2021 (UTC)
South Willingham
Hi Sadads, you left a Lead too short note on the SW page. I've expanded and updated it. Have I done enough to earn its removal please? Regards Tim.
- Hi @TimF Cop York: -- that lead still needs expansion -- for an article of that length I would expect something closer to 2-3 substantial paragraphs. Remember the lead is supposed too summarize all the significant features of the article, and make sure that the reader confidently knows what to expect elsewhere in the article, Sadads (talk) 13:13, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
Proposed deletion of Eisenson
The article Eisenson has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Non-notable surname. Only one article contains the name so not suitable for use as a disambig.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ♠PMC♠ (talk) 00:46, 24 August 2021 (UTC)
Nomination of Eisenson for deletion
The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Eisenson until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.
Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article.
Food
The article is a mess and you delete that part? The source is fine for bread being one of the four basic groups. I can reduce the NOVA part, but it came up in a few google searches so a mention of processing as a system of classification of food is apt. Aircorn (talk) 17:08, 25 August 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @Aircorn nutrition classifications are at best a convoluted, invented political system (see for example: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8375951/ ). Bread is not a separate distinct type of food in any nutritional sense, and most systems just call that grains or complex carbs. The idea of representing food groups at all in that part of the article is probably inappropriate: its a political process based on food lobbies and complex (and often oversimplified) ideas of food, Sadads (talk) 13:09, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are now open. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting doesn't commence until 15 September. Florida Power & Light citations
Hi, just a note when you updated the generation mix on the Florida Power & Light page (and thanks for that new info) you changed the citation from the 2016 Annual Report to another website. Unfortunately that annual report was cited elsewhere in page (see places where ref name="2017AR" is used), and those entries are now nonsensical. I planned to update with 2021 numbers anyway and will attempt to fix as I go. It's my fist Wikipedia edit in some years though, so feel free to jump back in with feedback. --Username5681 (talk) 17:39, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Username5681 Hi! I don't think I updated the generation mix -- you might be thinking of another editor. You did a good job on updating those pages however! Keep it up! If you do have more specific questions, I am happy to help, Sadads (talk) 13:00, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

Some clarification
Hello Sadads, I created a page Cheluchi Onyemelukwe per WP:COMMONNAME. I’ve not been as active as before due to electricity issues coupled up with doubled up work. I noticed that Bearcat created another page Cheluchi Onyemelukwe-Onuobia. I’m thinking of merging or redirecting. Either one, I’m good with it. Reading Beans 11:00, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Reading Beans Seems @Bearcat already merged the pages! You should feel free reaching out to folks on edits like that -- it's semi-common for something like that to happen, Sadads (talk) 15:19, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's a good thing Reading Beans pinged me here, but I was wondering why they didn't just ask me about it directly instead of coming to you. What happened is that the Canadian coverage of her Giller nomination has consistently included the Onuobia part of her name, so I had no awareness that an article already existed at a title that excluded it. Bearcat (talk) 15:26, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you for this. Bearcat, I’m sorry for not reaching out to you, I thought it Sadads would have responded quickly. Thank you all for resolving the issue. Reading Beans 17:15, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

Green revolution
Actually, I am aware of some of the problems with the Green Revolution, having talked extensively with disenchanted Peace Corps workers in India (1970-1972) where the Peace Corps was pushing a so-called high-yield rice that required chemical spraying in order to survive. --Bejnar (talk) 20:46, 21 September 2021 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – October 2021
News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2021).
- Following an RfC, extended confirmed protection may be used preemptively on certain high-risk templates.
- Following a discussion at the Village Pump, there is consensus to treat discord logs the same as IRC logs. This means that discord logs will be oversighted if posted onwiki.
- DiscussionTools has superseded Enterprisey's reply-link script. Editors may switch using the "Discussion tools" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features.
- A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
- Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
- The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.
- Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
- The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

A little more help, please?
It’s still I Reading Beans. My account is been caught up in some blocked range of IP’s. Although it comes and go but today, it was just too much. I checked now and found out that I’m able to edit but this isn’t what I want. If there’s a way it can be exempted, please, it will nice. Also tagging @:Bearcat, since I’ve "talked" to you before. Reading Beans 16:01, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- Reading Beans, I've changed your user editing privileges to add you to the "IP block exempt" group, so that you shouldn't be affected by rangeblocks anymore. Hopefully that should solve your problem, but let me know if it doesn't and I'll try something else. Bearcat (talk) 16:05, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- Bearcat, thank you so much for this kind help. I’ll let you know if this persist! Thank you so much! Reading Beans 16:10, 5 October 2021 (UTC)

Reliable data vs official data in Wikipedia
Based on your interests, you might want to check out the essay Wikipedia:Reliability of open government data. We (en.Wikipedia) are currently propagating official data without sufficiently warning readers how likely it is that the open data are nonsense. The distinction between "this info is reliably what the government claims about X but doesn't make sense" versus "this info is from a reliable source about X" is in the minds of editors, not readers, it seems to me. Anyway, please improve the essay or integrate suggestions if you wish. Boud (talk) 22:41, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

Campaigns Product Update #2
Hello Campaigns Product Newsletter subscribers! We are excited to share our updates:
- Request for Feedback: We have shared our project principles, wireframes for the desktop version, and open questions for you about the team’s event registration project. See the latest status updates here.
- Wireframes are design tools that imagine the future interface of the software. We haven’t built anything yet. We need your feedback on these designs so that we can make better product decisions. You can give feedback on the talk page regarding the design and features of the wireframes. We would love to hear your comments to help us establish the next necessary steps for the project.
- Presentations: The Campaign Product team participated in WikiArabia 2021 and WikiConference North America 2021 to give a brief introduction on how the team works. Senior Program Strategist Alex Stinson gave an overview about campaigns and how we can scale the organizing experience within the Movement. Senior Product Manager Ilana Fried gave an introduction about the Product Team and the project wireframes of the first campaign software solution: the on-wiki registration tool. View the recorded presentation here.
- Team update: We have hired our first team engineer, JCarvalho and our campaign organizing fellow, IBrazal. Newsletter updates will be done by IBrazal and she will be coordinating with you! We hope to have the rest of the engineering team onboard soon! For those of who missed the last Campaign Office Hour, you may watch the recording to know more about the Campaign Product Team.
What is next?
- Testers Needed! We will be partnering with YUX, a design research agency, to learn how our team can improve the experience of Wikimedia campaign organizers and participants in Africa. For this reason, we are looking for community members who are willing to be part of the rapid testing sessions. Preferably, we want organizers and editors who have worked in an African context. If you would like to participate in testing, please email ibrazal-ctrwikimedia.org.
- Upcoming Conferences. Wiki Indaba 2021. This year, the conference will be held virtually on November 5-7, 2021 with the theme "Rethink + Reset : Visions of the future". Read more about the conference here or register to join the event. We will be presenting the registration features on Sunday November 7.
- We will also be attending Wikimedia CEE Online Meeting 2021, which will be held virtually again this year on November 5-7, 2021. We will be presenting the registration tool on November 6 as part of our communication and sharing process.
- Translation Support. We are also beginning to translate the updates on Registration. If you think your language community would benefit from updates, please translate here.

Administrators' newsletter – December 2021
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2021).
- Unregistered editors using the mobile website are now able to receive notices to indicate they have talk page messages. The notice looks similar to what is already present on desktop, and will be displayed on when viewing any page except mainspace and when editing any page. (T284642)
- The limit on the number of emails a user can send per day has been made global instead of per-wiki to help prevent abuse. (T293866)
- Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee Elections is open until 23:59, 06 December 2021 (UTC).
- The already authorized standard discretionary sanctions for all pages relating to the Horn of Africa (defined as including Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and adjoining areas if involved in related disputes), broadly construed, have been made permanent.
Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled
A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. Environmental defenders
Hello, I created a new article at Environmental defender as we discussed on my talk page. This is actually my first new article, so I suspect I've missed some of the details involved in setting that up. If you wouldn't mind looking it over and let me know if there are things I've missed? I've done my best to provide a broad global overview. If you have any feedback on the content, of course I'm happy to hear that as well. I hope to add some pictures (though I haven't actually done that yet either, so it might take a minute). Thanks for your help! Larataguera (talk) 13:58, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
Climate communication - wrong citation?
Hi, in this diff last year on the Climate communication article you added a citation relating to "Segmentation of Signapore audiences into 3 segments", however the citation seems to be to a rat biology paper, do you have the correct one? Thanks Rjwilmsi 08:20, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
- Ah good catch, weird, fixed I think -- there are several papers on folks working with that audience, Sadads (talk) 12:22, 10 December 2021 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – January 2022
News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2021).
- Following consensus at the 2021 RfA review, the autopatrolled user right has been removed from the administrators user group; admins can grant themselves the autopatrolled permission if they wish to remain autopatrolled.
- Additionally, consensus for proposal 6C of the 2021 RfA review has led to the creation of an administrative action review process. The purpose of this process will be to review individual administrator actions and individual actions taken by users holding advanced permissions.
- Following the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Cabayi, Donald Albury, Enterprisey, Izno, Opabinia regalis, Worm That Turned, Wugapodes.
- The functionaries email list (functionaries-enlists.wikimedia.org) will no longer accept incoming emails apart from those sent by list members and WMF staff. Private concerns, apart from those requiring oversight, should be directly sent to the Arbitration Committee.
How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

I am new here on Wikipedia, and tried to contribute by adding precious information regarding my home Tehsil, Arifwala. N case, as a new member, I have made any mistake, he should have polish me and ask me to correct the mistake, else wasting my all night's effort. I am a Doctor by profession and gave my preciuos time to add some valuable information here at Wikipedia. But now, I am much disappointed. And starting this Discussion here as I have seen a lot of people disturbed because of this user. So, I hope Wikipedia Administration will look into this matter

Why is Joseph Kesselring's article categorized under "Opposition to World War II"?
You added this edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Joseph_Kesselring&diff=635240082&oldid=613723296 Nowhere in the article is it actually stated whether Kesselring or any of his works took any stance on WW2. Campaigns Product Update #3
Hello Campaigns Product Newsletter subscribers!
We are excited to share our updates:
- Proposal to create new namespaces: We have proposed to create two namespaces, which are “Event” and “Event talk.” This way, we can easily create an Event Center that pulls data from event pages. This Event Center may include tools to create event pages with registration support, a calendar of events, and event statistics, among other features. More importantly, the Event Center will highlight organizing as an essential part of the Wikimedia movement. Please give us feedback on Phabricator or Meta about our proposal to create two new namespaces.
- Engineering updates: We are excited that we have finished hiring for our engineering team! Three engineers and an engineering manager have joined our team since our last update. In the last few months, they have conducted technical planning and launched the building phase of the project. They are now building the registration tool. You can see the updated team on meta.
- Design updates: We conducted usability tests with a small group of testers for early feedback on the desktop wireframes. After collecting this feedback, we have developed a new version for desktop wireframes, which will be ready to share in the next few weeks. These desktop wireframes display the user flow of two experiences: one for organizers who want to add registration to their event pages, and another for participants who want to register for an event. Additionally, the design team is also currently working on the first version of mobile wireframes, which will be shared during the next office hour.
- 1. View the latest desktop wireframes in Figma for Campaign Organizer Prototype and Participant Registration Prototype.
- 2. Leave us some feedback on the desktop wireframes. Note that we haven’t posted the newest version of the desktop wireframes on the project page yet, but we will soon (and you can feel free to add feedback on any version you have seen).
- Ambassador updates: Three product ambassadors for the Arabic, French and Swahili communities have now joined our team! They will help us collect feedback from Wikimedia communities about the project and understand the needs of organizers, through gathering first-hand information. These ambassadors are immersed as actual members of these communities, so they will also help us identify the needs of the organizers in our pilot communities. The ambassadors are: M. Bachounda for Arabic communities, Georges Fodouop for French communities, and Antoni Mtavangu for Swahili communities.
What is next?
- Next Office Hour: We will be holding an office hour on March 31, 2022 at 15:00 UTC, which will be conducted via Zoom. We invite everyone to attend, and we really hope to see you! The focus will be on the Registration Tool. The team will also be providing community updates on the usability test findings and design highlights for the wireframes. We will also share our current Project timeline and answer any questions you may have. Join us and share your thoughts on these developments!
- In a few months, we are expecting to have the early testable version of the tool. By then, the team will be doing the first round of general testing and gathering feedback. We are looking forward to adding more features on the tool such as communication support, potentially by the end of this year. If you know other organizers that might be interested in following these developments, please recommend that they subscribe to the newsletter. We want to receive as much feedback as we can.
Thank you!

A little help, maybe?
Hello Sadads, I’m trying to create Zimbabwean literature with a draft here already. But, I am finding it really hard to do. There are already plenty of sources online but, I don’t get seem to actually know how to interpret them into an encyclopedic tone. Do you mind helping me out with it? PS: Is this page Third Generation of Nigerian Writers really good for a GA? READING BEANS Talk to the Beans? 05:46, 31 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Reading Beans-- well the Third Generation of Nigerian Writers article is at a good place to start -- however, I don't think its ready for GA -- I would expect much more content, and description of things like themes and how the "generation" developed and distinguished itself from other generations.
- As for Zimbabwean literature, I would look to other surveys of the field for example http://www.postcolonialweb.org/zimbabwe/zlitov.html or https://lithub.com/on-discovering-zimbabwean-literature-as-a-zimbabwean-writer/ -- summarizing the scope and arc of the development of a literary tradition in Zimbabwe. Consider for example reading literature surveys like this one and starting there. These summary articles are hard, because unlike a proper-noun topic (i.e. a specific novelist or novel) you need to have a mental model for the scope of the work in your head before you write otherwise it can sprawl. You also have a judgement call to make on how much you include the Rhodesian tradition, and colonial tradition before that.
- As for actually working on either of those: I don't write about Novels at the moment -- I am almost entirely focused on Wikipedia:WikiProject Climate change Sadads (talk) 06:03, 31 March 2022 (UTC)
- Alright, thank you for the input. I’d start with that. I noticed the change of area nice job by the way READING BEANS Talk to the Beans? 07:29, 31 March 2022 (UTC)

Hello Sadads. Some of the content you placed in quotation marks does not actually appear in the source article, and some you restored unaltered is actually present in the source. So I have removed it a second time. Sorry but I don't have time to perform a rewrite, but you are welcome to do so if you have the time and interest. Here is a link to the bot report. Click on the iThenticate button to view the overlap. — Diannaa (talk) 22:45, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Diannaa The overlaps are limited, and just a few words from the key findings -- you are punishing a new editor and putting a wall of text on their page, rather than incubating the newcomer as a participant. If you don't have the time, when encountering these more edge case examples, please skip them. The backlog is ever growing, and 50 or 60 words of unquoted text is well within fair use of US law, so COPYVIO doesn't justify the bad experience for the newcomer, Sadads (talk) 23:04, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry but I disagree, and have been doing copyright cleanup this way for many years. I don't think this is an "edge case" either, as there's more than 60 words copied directly from the source. Wikipedia's fair use rules don't allow us to copy material from copyright sources when there's a freely licensed alternative available. In this case the freely licensed material is prose that we write ourselves. Unattributed copying is not "fair use", it's plagiarism, because the editor is passing off someone else's work as their own. We need to make copyright rules very clear to new users right from the start, to build awareness of what our expectations are. While I do occasionally paraphrase the copyvio material myself, given the volume of copyvio reports that are filed each day and the amount of time it takes to assess and clean the articles and notify and/or discuss with the editors involved, it's not possible for me to perform re-writes in each instance. — Diannaa (talk) 23:13, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
- Hello Sadads, could you please reverse your reversal of Diannaa's revision deletion? Restoring copyrighted content after it has been revision deleted is not really ok, please see Wikipedia:Deletion_policy#Copyright_violations. I would reverse your action myself, but doing so would be wheel warring. Could you also please apologize to her? "
you are punishing a new editor and putting a wall of text on their page
" is falsely implying she is biting a newcomer when all she did was revert an edit and then give a detailed explanation as to why. There was no sort of incivility or unnecessary template spam. It is not our burden to rewrite and rephrase every bit of content that is copied into Wikipedia. "If you don't have the time, when encountering these more edge case examples, please skip them
" is disrespectful, given the thousands of hours Diannaa has spent cleaning up copyright issues over the years, and seems to be implying incompetence on her part. I've reworded the addition in the meantime, as it was still closely phrased to the source. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 19:07, 28 April 2022 (UTC)- Hello Sadads, it's been a few days since the incident and my above post, and you haven't responded or done anything. Per WP:ADMINACCT, could you please respond? If you do not, I am considering taking this to the administrators noticeboard. Thank you, Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 19:10, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
- It's really in your best interest to respond, could you at least say something? Even if it's disagreement with me? Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 18:47, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
- I too would like to see more explanation from you as to the reason for your actions. Perhaps you don't realize it, but both your reversions of my copyright cleanup efforts and your explanations for the reasons why you did so are out of step with the way we are currently handling violations of Wikipedia's copyright policy. Your remarks here seem to imply that attracting new editors is more important than enforcing our copyright policy, a Wikipedia policy with legal considerations. I certainly don't think that allowing new editors to violate our copyright policy is a good idea, as it gives a very wrong impression of the professional level of conduct expected of our participants. And I certainly don't agree that 60-some words of copyvio is no big deal.Moneytrees and I are both requesting per WP:ADMINACCT that you please respond now to our critiques of your actions. Thank you,— Diannaa (talk) 20:42, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Diannaa and @Moneytrees -- apologies its been a crazy week at work and at home. The user added the content in good faith with close paraphrasing, and we revised it correctly -- and without the edit history, it was impossible for subsequent editors to revise the content, including the review of the bot report pointed to by Diana. The second revision by @Moneytrees of the close paraphrasing wasn't copied content according to the both report (from the abstract or the article, so I am not sure why you thought it was close paraphrasing), and less than half of the edit was a misattributed quote, which I sufficiently identified as quotation in a way consistent with US fair use.
- Instead of doing the straightforward thing: putting quotations on the quoted content, you did the more aggressive and assumption of bad faith action: removing and erasing the contribution. Educating the user is a good idea, but doesn't actually advance Wikipedia open knowledge goal.Sadads (talk) 17:10, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
- Hello Sadads, it's been a few days since the incident and my above post, and you haven't responded or done anything. Per WP:ADMINACCT, could you please respond? If you do not, I am considering taking this to the administrators noticeboard. Thank you, Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 19:10, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for responding, even though you are not agreeing with me. While the overlap was smaller with the second rewrite, my rewrite was justified as there were still issues. Quotations couldn't have been put around the text to fix the issue. To make things clearer, I am going to show the copied bits from the source, the text of the initial edit, and the second rewrite before I rephrased it. I have bolded the similarities and underlined the inconsistencies between what the cited source says and the "quoted" bits:
The source:
"A popular belief in the political science and political economy literature is that oil rents are associated with corruption and state instability. [...] We support our argument documenting that there is a significant effect of oil rents on corruption in countries with a high share of state participation in oil production[...] We find that an increase in oil rents significantly increases corruption, significantly deteriorates political rights while at the same time leading to a significant improvement in civil liberties. We argue that these findings can be explained by the political elite having an incentive to extend civil liberties but reduce political rights in the presence of oil windfalls to evade redistribution and conflict.
"
What the user added:
"Popular opinion in political science and political economy literature dictates that oil rents are associated with corruption. There is an appreciable effect of oil rents on corruption in countries with a high share of state participation in oil production. A 2011 study found that an increase in oil rents significantly increases corruption and deteriorates political rights. Improvements in civil liberties are congruent with these changes, and was explained by researchers as political elites having an incentive to extend civil liberties while reducing political rights in the presence of oil windfalls to evade redistribution and conflict.
"
The second rewrite:
"Popular opinion in political science and political economy literature dictates that oil rents are associated with corruption. There is an appreciable effect of oil rents on corruption in countries with a high share of state participation in oil production. A 2011 study found that "an increase in oil rents significantly increases corruption and deteriorates political rights". The researchers explained oil exploitation as giving political elites an incentive to "extend civil liberties while reducing political rights in the presence of oil windfalls to evade redistribution and conflict".
When doing my rewrite, I hadn't noticed that the quotes were still not the same, which I have now fixed. The initial edit is closer to an outright paste than close paraphrasing in my opinion, as the sentences are truncated and only a few words are switched out. It is close enough to the source that it would be reasonable to just remove the entire paragraph instead of attempting a rewrite. Diannaa and me are not assuming bad faith with our actions here; the vast majority of issues like this come from various reasonable misunderstandings of complicated copyright law and acknowledging this while working in the copyright area is required. However, just because someone is doing something wrong with good intentions doesn't mean they get a license to continue doing it; they need to be told that they are doing something incorrect in a measured way, which is what Diannaa did. It is not assuming bad faith to remove copyright violations, it would only be if Diannaa did something like immediately blocking the user or implying that they were copying the content for a malicious purpose. The issue with the edit could be seen then and can still be seen now at this Copyptrol report if you click "iThenticate report". Reports are generated on a per edit basis, and the bot does not catch every edit made, which is why further changes made to the article did not show up.
You tell Diannaa "you did the more aggressive and assumption of bad faith action
", but I believe that is actually what you have done. Diannaa didn't even revision delete the edit at first, so anyone could have gone back and reworded it before restoring without wholesale reverting her. You restored the copyvio by wholesale reverting her and then added quotation marks around part of the paragraph, with some of the now "quoted" text not actually appearing in the source. Diannaa again reverted this as a copyright violation and directed you to the report in her edit summary before revision deleting the copyright violation under RD1, which is standard practice. She also left the above note to further explain and avoid conflict. You then un-hid the copyright violations saying "not gross copyright violation
" and preceded to re-add the paragraph with minimal editing. The paragraph was still too close to the source, so I decided to just reword it to stop further conflict. I thought your actions were aggressive and essentially edit warring, with your reversal of Diannaa's revision deletion being very combative. Your actions here appear hasty- if you had taken more time to discuss the issue with her or read the copypatrol report and source after being provided with them and preceded to rewrite the content, this whole conflict could've been avoided. So, again, could you please reverse your reversal? Thank you. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 19:59, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Moneytrees Again, looks to me like someone who doesn't quite understand paraphrasing. The report only shows some poor paraphrasing of key phrases in the analysis, that are the findings by the author. I don't see where in the policy, if we have fixed the poor paraphrasing, especially if the edits are "redacting a revision would remove any contributor's attribution" per the policy -- which is the case here, they made no other edits to the page but did the intellectual work of bringing us the source. You and I have done several revisions to make it comply with our policy -- I think we are in a good place, in that the current text is fine and we have reached consensus on an acceptable text. Sadads (talk) 21:36, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
- Once again your response leads me to believe that you are out of touch with the way copyright cleanup as well as revision deletion are currently being done by the people who are actually doing the work. Those people are working primarily at Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations, WP:CP, and at Copypatrol. I don't remember ever seeing you at any of those places, so I wonder where you got the impression that 60 words copied from a source document is borderline, something that we would typically let slide so as not to risk alarming a new user. I don't see it as a case of poor paraphrasing - it's a violation of our copyright policy according to the way it's currently being enforced by the people who are actually working this admin task. I saw (via the CopyPatrol interface) and cleaned up a violation of the copyright policy and placed a
{{uw-copyright-new}}
template on the user's talk page. This template is specifically designed for new users, so I am baffled as to why you repeatedly describe my actions as aggressive and bad faith.Regarding the question of revision deletion: The legal code states that all contributing authors must be credited. ("The credit required by this Section 4(c) may be implemented in any reasonable manner; provided, however, that in the case of a Adaptation or Collection, at a minimum such credit will appear, if a credit for all contributing authors of the Adaptation or Collection appears, then as part of these credits and in a manner at least as prominent as the credits for the other contributing authors.") It does not state that each sentence and phrase in the document must be credited to an individual author. Therefore, providing a list of contributors via the article history is adequate attribution, even if the edits themselves are no longer visible. So revision deletion can and should be done.— Diannaa (talk) 23:17, 6 May 2022 (UTC) - To address the "redacting a revision would remove any contributor's attribution" point: redacting a revision does not do that per long standing understanding and the WMF, and that passage is more referring to redacting the username instead of the actual text of the edit. Even then, the text had been completely removed when Diannaa did the revision deletion, and no other content was added in between, so there was nothing to attribute. I took a break over the last week or so and have thought about this further. Of course I understand your point of view, that we need to be kind to new users who are adding content to the encyclopedia in good faith, but that does not allow them to copy text from their sources. Ignoring copyright violations from newer users just enables them to do it more and create more extensive problems. It doesn't fix any problems, it creates more. There is a post from me I would like you to read at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Archive336#We_cannot_sweep_copyright_issues_under_the_rug_any_longer, maybe you can understand my point of view and how difficult and time consuming it is to clean this stuff up. A Natural Curiosity
Umm ... something's been lost:
- "The novel continues Drabble's interest in exploring..."
- "... responding to Drabble's "curiosity" in continuing to explore the characters."
- "... the novel explores ..."
- "The novel continues the psychological and social exploration of ..."
- "... as furthering Drabble's attempts to explore the Virginia Woolf attempt's with realism to ..."
- "... describes the novel as a continuation of Thatcher's exploration of ..."
Thatcher? Really? Though, since so much is made of it elsewhere, it is strange that Margaret Thatcher is not linked.
BTW: that fifth quote has very awkward text... Shenme (talk) 01:35, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Shenme I did some tweaks, but haven't looked at the article in ages, wrote it 6 years ago -- and am not really a Drabble fan to begin with -- if something is not right, feel free to go back to the sources and fix it, the more important thing is that the sources are there and it's not wrong, just maybe not a clear summary, ~~~1 Sadads (talk) 15:46, 8 May 2022 (UTC)

- Following an RfC, a change has been made to the administrators inactivity policy. Under the new policy, if an administrator has not made at least 100 edits over a period of 5 years they may be desysopped for inactivity.
- Following a discussion on the bureaucrat's noticeboard, a change has been made to the bureaucrats inactivity policy.
- The ability to undelete the associated talk page when undeleting a page has been added. This was the 11th wish of the 2021 Community Wishlist Survey.
- A public status system for WMF wikis has been created. It is located at https://www.wikimediastatus.net/ and is hosted separately to WMF wikis so in the case of an outage it will remain viewable.
- Remedy 2 of the St Christopher case has been rescinded following a motion. The remedy previously authorised administrators to place a ban on single-purpose accounts who were disruptively editing on the article St Christopher Iba Mar Diop College of Medicine or related pages from those pages.

Please check this diff /arch., alt. arch./ (maybe compare with other revisions after edit wars) before speedily reverting seemingly weird contrib. Thanks. --5.43.77.122 (talk) 00:02, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
Soil aeration
Greetings. Appreciate your notification on aeration. Currently, soil aeration redirects to permeability of soils. On review, before creating soil aeration from aeration, I would consider using soil gas for main-linking(?) to a soil-aeration-specific article. Regardless, most of the ways I imagine moving forward are easier once any unsourced soil-related content has been sourced or removed from the aeration article. Paleorthid (talk) 18:29, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
- Yeah, I don't have a strong opinion @Paleorthid -- I was just going through and working on content, and know that it is a distinct topic, because of previous work I have done on agriculture, etc, Sadads (talk) 01:13, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
