Proposed deletion |
On this page, the deletion or merging of templates and modules, except as noted below, is discussed. To propose the renaming of a template or templates, use Wikipedia:Requested moves.
How to use this page
What not to propose for discussion here
The majority of deletion and merger proposals concerning pages in the template namespace and module namespace should be listed on this page. However, there are a few exceptions:
- Stub templates
- Stub templates and categories should be listed at Categories for discussion, as these templates are merely containers for their categories, unless the stub template does not come with a category and is being nominated by itself.
- Userboxes
- Userboxes should be listed at Miscellany for deletion, regardless of the namespace in which they reside.
- Speedy deletion candidates
- If the template clearly satisfies a criterion for speedy deletion, tag it with a speedy deletion template. For example, if you wrote the template and request its deletion, tag it with {{Db-author}}.
- Policy or guideline templates
- Templates that are associated with particular Wikipedia policies or guidelines, such as the speedy deletion templates, cannot be listed at TfD separately. They should be discussed on the talk page of the relevant guideline.
- Template redirects
- List at Redirects for discussion.
Reasons to delete a template
- The template violates some part of the template namespace guidelines, and can't be altered to be in compliance.
- The template is redundant to a better-designed template.
- The template is not used, either directly or by template substitution (the latter cannot be concluded from the absence of backlinks), and has no likelihood of being used.
- The template violates a policy such as Neutral point of view or Civility and it can't be fixed through normal editing.
Templates should not be nominated if the issue can be fixed by normal editing. Instead, you should edit the template to fix its problems. If the template is complex and you don't know how to fix it, WikiProject Templates may be able to help.
Templates for which none of these apply may be deleted by consensus here. If a template is being misused, consider clarifying its documentation to indicate the correct use, or informing those that misuse it, rather than nominating it for deletion. Initiate a discussion on the template talk page if the correct use itself is under debate.
Listing a template
To list a template for deletion or merging, follow this three-step process. The use of Twinkle (explained below) is strongly recommended, as it automates and simplifies these steps. Note that the "Template:" prefix should not be included anywhere when carrying out these steps (unless otherwise specified).
Step | Instructions |
---|---|
I: Tag the template. | Add one of the following codes to the top of the template page:
Note:
Multiple templates: If you are nominating multiple related templates, choose a meaningful title for the discussion (like "American films by decade templates"). Tag every template with Related categories: If including template-populated tracking categories in the TfD nomination, add TemplateStyles pages: The above templates will not work on TemplateStyles pages. Instead, add a CSS comment to the top of the page:
|
II: List the template at TfD. | Follow to edit today's TfD log.
Add this text to the bottom of the page:
If the template has had previous TfDs, you can add Use an edit summary such as Multiple templates: If this is a deletion proposal involving multiple templates, use the following: {{subst:Tfd2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be deleted. ~~~~}} You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters If this is a merger proposal involving more than two templates, use the following: {{subst:Tfm2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|with=main template (optional)|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be merged. ~~~~}} You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters Related categories: If this is a deletion proposal involving a template and a category populated solely by templates, add this code after the {{subst:Catfd2|category name}} |
III: Notify users. | Please notify the creator of the template nominated (as well as the creator of the target template, if proposing a merger). It is helpful to also notify the main contributors of the template that you are nominating. To find them, look in the page history or talk page of the template. Then, add one of the following:
to the talk pages of the template creator (and the creator of the other template for a merger) and the talk pages of the main contributors. It is also helpful to make any interested WikiProjects aware of the discussion. To do that, make sure the template's talk page is tagged with the banners of any relevant WikiProjects; please consider notifying any of them that do not use Article alerts. Multiple templates: There is no template for notifying an editor about a multiple-template nomination: please write a personal message in these cases. |
Consider adding any templates you nominate for TfD to your watchlist. This will help ensure that the TfD tag is not removed.
After nominating: Notify interested projects and editors
While it is sufficient to list a template for discussion at TfD (see above), nominators and others sometimes want to attract more attention from and participation by informed editors. All such efforts must comply with Wikipedia's guideline against biased canvassing.
To encourage participation by less experienced editors, please avoid Wikipedia-specific abbreviations in the messages you leave about the discussion, link to any relevant policies or guidelines, and link to the TfD discussion page itself. If you are recommending that a template be speedily deleted, please give the criterion that it meets.
WikiProjects are groups of editors that are interested in a particular subject or type of editing. If the article is within the scope of one or more WikiProjects, they may welcome a brief, neutral note on their project's talk page(s) about the TfD. You can use {{Tfdnotice}}
for this.
Tagging the nominated template's talk page with a relevant Wikiproject's banner will result in the template being listed in that project's Article Alerts automatically, if they subscribe to the system. For instance, tagging a template with {{WikiProject Physics}} will list the discussion in Wikipedia:WikiProject Physics/Article alerts.
Notifying substantial contributors to the template
While not required, it is generally considered courteous to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the template and its talkpage that you are nominating for discussion. To find the creator and main contributors, look in the page history or talk page.
At this point, you've done all you need to do as nominator. Sometime after seven days have passed, someone else will either close the discussion or, where needed, "relist" it for another seven days of discussion. (That "someone" may not be you, the nominator.)
Once you have submitted a template here, no further action is necessary on your part. If the nomination is successful it will be added to the Holding Cell until the change is implemented. There is no requirement for nominators to be part of the implementation process, but they are allowed to if they so wish.
Also, consider adding any templates you nominate to your watchlist. This will help ensure that your nomination tag is not mistakenly or deliberately removed.
Twinkle
Twinkle is a convenient tool that can perform many of the posting and notification functions automatically, with fewer errors and missed steps than manual editing. Twinkle does not notify WikiProjects, although many of them have automatic alerts. It is helpful to notify any interested WikiProjects that don't receive alerts, but this has to be done manually.
Discussion
Anyone can join the discussion, but please understand the deletion policy and explain your reasoning.
People will sometimes also recommend subst or subst and delete and similar. This means the template text should be "merged" into the articles that use it. Depending on the content, the template page may then be deleted; if preserving the edit history for attribution is desirable, it may be history-merged with the target article or moved to mainspace and redirected.
Templates are rarely orphaned—that is, removed from pages that transclude them—before the discussion is closed. A list of open discussions eligible for closure can be found at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Old unclosed discussions.
Closing discussion
Administrators should read the closing instructions before closing a nomination. Note that WP:XFDCloser semi-automates this process and ensures all of the appropriate steps are taken.

This is more or less the predecessor to the Template:Dashboard.wikiedu.org assignment, since turned into a subst-only template. I think a subst and delete (of the same character, so convert to text and then subst) would be appropriate here for the same reasons the newer template was turned into a substed template. As I suggested a few weeks ago, I don't think this template needs to exist. It has 2 uses, and its use case doesn't fit the styling. These are not disambiguation pages nor even remotely similar to disambiguation pages. Broad concept articles exist all over the wiki and I think no-one would add this to those. The nomination looks like the nominator hasn't read the template's source code, nor looked at it's application in more than 400 articles. CLalgo (talk) 23:50, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
- Games related articles should use their respective Infoboxes, not sport particular ones. Also, DB links should be in the external links of an article. Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 00:10, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
- Not all games have specific templates. More over, some templates such as {{Infobox martial artist}} do link to external DBs, so that point is mute as well. Thirdly, not all pages using the template are part of "games". This nomination should be withdrawn. CLalgo (talk) 13:45, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

- "Used over at 48 articles" [SIC] is not a reason to keep a redundant template. The template creator's edit summary when creating the template was
"create template based off template:infobox olympic games "
- in other words, a fork. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 09:38, 9 May 2022 (UTC)- The 48 articles references it's specific use. 48 article about the Pan American Games exist. "Only 19 transclusions", as you stated from that original discussion. How could it be redundant now given the expansion of the number of Pan American Games articles? And if it's a fork of the Olympic games infobox, then why not merge both into the Infobox games template instead of deleting it? --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 17:26, 10 May 2022 (UTC)
"How could it be redundant now given the expansion of the number of Pan American Games articles?"
Because 48 is still a very low number; because usage stats are not in any case a measure of redundancy or otherwise, and because many of those instances were swapping one infobox for another (see the example I gave, above), very similar, infobox. What do you think should be merged from this template into another (and why was that not simply added there in the first place)? As two merging to other templates, neither of which are part of this nomination, WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS applies. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:01, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

Template:Ambiguous short name
- Template:Maybe distinguish (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
- Module:Hatnote lists (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
Every single possible use of this template either violates WP:NAMB or is redundant to {{redirect}}. * Pppery * it has begun... 13:14, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
- I created the template because I had a use case that wasn't covered by current hatnotes. There is no redundancy to {{redirect}}, given that this template has nothing to do with redirects. Obviously, this hatnote, just like other disambiguating hatnotes, should only be used when there's an actual need for disambiguation. Take, for example, the case of Eastern Orthodox Church: one of the use cases for this template. If I search on Google for "Orthodox Church," I get an infobox featuring the Eastern Orthodox Church article on Wikipedia. This is because "Orthodox Church" is a common shortening of "Eastern Orthodox Church." Let say that the reader is actually searching for another church called "Orthodox Church," but doesn't know quite enough about the topic to know whether the identification of "Eastern Orthodox Church" with "Orthodox Church" is an identification as true synonym or as synonymic instance. Without this hatnote, the reader might be confused by the lede of that article, which says that "Orthodox Church" is another name for "Eastern Orthodox Church" (which is true). But this hatnote helps guide the reader in that situation, giving the reader a brief explanation, and pointing the reader to the disambiguation page that can lead to the article the reader is looking for. This template is useful in cases in which there's no WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for a term (and therefore no {{redirect}}), but there's still a likelihood of ambiguity when a shorter version of the article name is readily conflated with the full title. Although this hatnote covers subtly different use cases, it is similar in spirit to {{Other uses of}} and {{Distinguish}}, so if this template is inherently WP:NAMB-violating as the nominator asserts, I have a difficult time understanding why those other hatnote templates would not be as well. Jdcompguy (talk) 15:23, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
- Subsequent to this nomination, I renamed the template to Template:Maybe distinguish because this does a much better job of communicating this template's range of use cases and its relation to existing ones. Jdcompguy (talk) 16:07, 30 April 2022 (UTC)

- This book, although being called a cookbook, beautifully describes the interesting cultures and traditions and eating habits of the multiethnic groups in northern Laos. This book also best summarizes how Lao people in general enjoy eating sticky rice with fruit, including mangoes.

- Here is our Gourmand award winning book “FOOD FROM NORTHERN LAOS: The Boat Landing Cookbook” available for free download as it is now out of print.
- Food from N Laos pdf (2019)
- Kees and I decided not to reprint because:
- • we want the information to be freely available to anyone interested
- • the cultural knowledge contained in the book belongs to the Lao people.
- Now if a nice publisher wants to reprint the book (our print run was 3,000 copies) please contact us for permission. But the deal is that the free version stays available through this website and the Boat Landing website.
- Cheers,

A large number of these templates have been created since March 2022; they came to my notice when {{Lambrecht-surname}} linked to a surname page I had created. I proposed that template for deletion at AfD and it was deleted. I suggested that the editor should stop creating these templates, but they have continued to do so without commenting on my talk page message. These six are the first of about 50 similar templates which were created, brought here as a small batch to check for consensus. If the consensus is for deletion, presumably the other 40+ could be bundled into a single multiple deletion proposal in the future. PamD 15:38, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
- The somewhat similar given-name sidebar template {{Charles}} was discussed last month. Pinging the major contributors to that discussion: @Fram, WikiCleanerMan, TonyTheTiger, Bagumba, Uanfala, Frietjes, Spike 'em, and Joseph2302: PamD 16:06, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
Rationale for {{Matthew-surname}} There is no sourced information in the encyclopedia linking these names. The articles on (most of all of) the individual surnames do not mention "Matthew". I suggest that if there are WP:RS available which state that these names are associated with the given name "Matthew", then a sourced list of these names could be included in Matthew (given name) and a sourced statement to that effect added to each surname article. There is no need for this template, which clutters the surname pages with unverified associations. The article on the surname Matthew (surname) lists two unsourced variants, one of which, Mathew (one "t") is not included in this template, illustrating the unreliable nature of statements in this area.
The other five templates are similarly unsourced and unreliable (why include McAllister and not McAlister in the "Alexander" one?)This and a group of similar surname templates are not useful to our readers. PamD 15:21, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
- Edited to rearrange as requested by @WikiCleanerMan:: I've never tried a multiple nomination at an XfD before and tried to follow the suggestions for multiple nominations at Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion#Listing_a_template but didn't get it right. PamD 17:10, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
- The creator of these templates is not responding to any comments. He just seem to dump them without a care in the world about the quality of the links. The articles should refer to each other, to a reasonable extent.
One could imagine each article referring to the main name, presuming they are verifiably related, but not to all of the variants.—Bagumba (talk) 16:17, 6 May 2022 (UTC) - Delete per nomination. PamD, could you fix the placement of the Tfd link format and the rationale. Most of the rationale is the same for most of the templates nominated. It's kind of hard to navigate going through the page. For instance, the Tfd links should go below the header of the nomination and the rationale below the templates listed. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 17:01, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
- delete, better to use list articles or categories for this type of navigation. Frietjes (talk) 17:14, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
- Delete. If sourced and reformatted, each box might make a useful list section of an article, but others have pointed out why the material is unsuited to navboxes. I also attempted to contact the creator without response. The links to dabs can be fixed per WP:INTDAB (though it's disappointing that someone else has to clean up) but navboxes rarely list dabs: those dabs don't (and, per MOS:DAB, shouldn't) transclude a navbox. Many other linked pages are technically articles but just list people so named; such pages are useful navigation aids but have little or no encyclopedic content to merit a navbox entry. - Keep. As with many other Country data templates that use {{Country showdata}} for main documentation, a separate "local" documentation page is used to add pages to specific categories and at times to show associated Country data templates. This template categorizes {{Country data Malaya}} to Category:Country data templates of former countries. P.I. Ellsworth - ed. put'r there 10:49, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
- Local documentation also allows inclusion of related data in the "Other information" section of the main documentation page. Just added related info to this template. - No, but it serves as a rule of the thumb and has done so for many years. What articles are there to navigate from these two navboxes? There are none, thus these don't have a navigational purpose. Which is what navboxes are for. To navigate across/between articles. Citing policy, "Navigation templates are particularly useful for a small, well-defined group of articles", but the main articles of the subjects are red links which is what should be avoided and thus these templates qualify for deletion. Generally, when users create navboxes, the articles exist prior to the navboxes justifying the existence of such navboxes. The same is true of the many navboxes I've created for foreign relations. If the red links can be replaced by articles that do exist, then deletion can be avoided as the navboxes have been improved upon since the nomination. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 15:04, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

- Two of the keep votes are coming from people who are not regulars at Tfd's. If the cosmos template was useful, wouldn't the articles have been created by now before the navboxes' creation in 2013? If the articles didn't exist then, then how is the navbox useful now? If somebody is going to create the articles, then go ahead. - @Parsecboy and Sturmvogel 66: An ANI may very well be needed. Looking at the exchanges between Wikicleanerman and Nigel Ish, (both here, at wt:ships and Nigel Ish's talk page), it appears Nigel Ish has walked away as a result. Who knows how many other content creators have been chased away and how much content has been needlessly lost becuase of the behaviour here. - wolf 14:43, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
- Let's all take a step back and let the nomination play out. I've explained to the admin on his talk page. I've argued my case and so has have others. There is no need for ANI. And I'll address the idea I drove someone off Wikipedia. I didn't. Multiple explanations can be tiring, but I'm taking a step back from these ships Tfd's. If anyone is willing to improve the navboxes to address the concerns of the nomination and is willing to create the articles, by all means, go ahead. Let's not take this personally or anywhere farther than it needs to go. I apologize for any offense. But I only was arguing on the merits of the nomination which I checked. But what's done is done. And let the process play out. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 16:02, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
- I don't really think that things have gotten so bad we need to go to a drama board. While WikiCleanerMan's comments weren't very collegial at times, Nigel overreacted, as he is want to do. I hope that he returns as I value his contributions, but I never would have inferred that either WikiCleanerMan or Jonesy95 would have damaged some of the articles that were part of the disputed templates from their comments.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 19:51, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
- For the record, the behavior I was talking about was the gatekeeping and trying to disqualify the opinions of people who aren't regulars at TfD. And the nomination here, which struck me as a bit tendentious; WCM should have known that would be contentious, and it would have been wise to wait for the outcome of these discussions before pouring more gasoline on the fire. Criticizing NENAN and not understanding its invocation in Tfd nominations represents a big problem for not listening. It's not policy. That's true. But it serves as a rule of thumb. Citing policy, "Navigation templates are particularly useful for a small, well-defined group of articles". There are no articles at the moment for Cosmos-class tender. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 00:18, 8 May 2022 (UTC)

There should be a Wikipedia article on the subject of the template.
– Jonesey95 (talk) 14:36, 8 May 2022 (UTC)- Just about all of them can have a class article written; it's just a question of time. I have no idea why the templates were created prematurely, but I would be wroth to discover that they'd been deleted simply because they didn't (yet) link to existing articles as that would mean that precious time would be required to recreate them. I am entirely indifferent about the guideline of a minimum of five articles before a navbox should be written as I believe that every ship class article deserves a navbox, regardless of the number of links in it. I found the 8 May nomination of a class template particularly offensive because it already has several blue links and we were still discussing the issue.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 19:51, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
- It seems like the right choice may be to userfy the templates that are not ready yet, so that the effort to create them will not have been wasted. – Jonesey95 (talk) 07:47, 10 May 2022 (UTC)
- What, exactly, would be the point in userfying either of these templates? There are articles currently using both, and removing them would inarguably degrade those articles. If ever there was a case to WP:IAR, this would be it, not that NENAN's 5-article prescription has ever actually been a rule. Parsecboy (talk) 19:37, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

- Audaz-class destroyer (1945) actually does have an article - at the non-disambiguated Audaz-class destroyer. The constituent units of the class don't have articles on en-wiki, but do have articles on the Spanish-language Wikipedia, so they are credible targets for articles.Nigel Ish (talk) 19:12, 5 May 2022 (UTC)

- <sarcasm>Well ain't that just spiffy! I've created dozens of templates with a class article and only two individual ship articles; hell, I have a few that only deal with a single ship. Ya gonna try to delete them as well? And others have lots of redlinks in them as well, are they subject to deletion too?</sarcasm> That's what it sounds like you'd like to do, based on your comment at 00:21. I don't actually think that that's what you meant, but it sure came across that way.
- I applaud your Wikignoming efforts, but I think that y'all have gotten wrapped up in your own little world here. I see that y'all made no effort to notify our project about these proposed deletions; if it hadn't been for one of our alert members, none of us would have known about these. And that I don't appreciate at all.
- You guys aren't ships people and are clearly not placing the same importance as we do or evaluating them by the same criteria. Y'all place the most importance on redlinks and we see something that we can potentially put to use at a later date, deletion of which would cause us additional effort to recreate once we got around to writing the relevant articles. You guys don't know enough to spot the bad links in the templates as Nigel pointed out, but we've fixed them now that they've been pointed out. You've found one genuinely erroneous template and three others that likely lack the RS coverage to satisfy GNG and those four can be deleted without objection from us, but all the others are perfectly useful once the articles are written. Y'all are focused on these templates simply because they're un- or underused, but so what? What resources are they consuming just sitting out there? I'm all for deleting erroneous or obsolete templates, but other than that what harm are unused templates causing? Since they're not actually being used, they only take up a few kilobytes of memory and use no cycles. Honestly all this comes across to me as an obsessive tidiness for its own sake.
- I'm sure that I've misunderstood y'all's motives and such, or that there's a lot I don't understand about the templates in general, so I'll be standing by to be educated. No, seriously, I'm curious why unused templates are perceived as a problem by y'all.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 03:13, 8 May 2022 (UTC)

- The deletion request for the Ersatz Triglav-class destroyer is now moot.

{{DNB}}
{{Cite DNB}}
and{{DNB poster}}
). While of course the link can be met with a "general-purpose template" they are difficult to fill out unless one is very familiar how temples work. I think it should be kept because it may be useful. If however someone wants to deleted until it is needed then I suggest it then editors should be able to recreate it without the need to go through bureaucrat hoops to do so. -- PBS (talk) 12:32, 10 May 2022 (UTC) - Comment @User:Jonesey95 how does deletion benefit the project over retention in this case? -- PBS (talk) 12:32, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

- Keep These templates which link to Wikisource come in threes. One is for citations usually called "cite xyx", the second is "XYZ" and the third is "XYZ poster" (for use in external links). If one looks at Category:Wikipedia articles incorporating a citation from the Complete Encyclopaedia of Music it is clear that this is used as a source. Given that it is out of copyright then text from it may well be copied into a Wikipedia article in the passive narrative voice in which case this template will be needed. -- PBS (talk) 12:26, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

- There has been disagreement on which type of infobox to use, with either no infobox, or {{infobox software}} being used. Per WP:INFOBOXPURPOSE, it has special fields that are not available with any other kind of infobox–ones that can't naturally be integrated into the prose (primarily the server IP address, but also player statistics). It specializes in Minecraft servers by design and will result in a poorer-quality infobox if it is deleted. Its addition has not been contested on any of the articles. - Delete per my or other arguments at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video games/Archive 151#Infobox_Minecraft server Proposal. Half a dozen articles do not warrant an infobox. - Ofcourse there's stuff to convert. It's a list of ships, lists of ships exists as articles on Wikipedia. That is the substance of the template, and it should instead be a list article, so it should be listified. Listification is a valid outcome of a TfD (a form of substing with editing), and per WP:CLN this should be a list. This can be accomplished by moving this page to DRAFT:List of Design 1074 ships and removing the navbox formatting, leaving the list. That will then contain the edit history of the base list -- 65.92.246.142 (talk) 17:28, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

Both All three templates fail WP:TG on multiple points. The first template - created by now-blocked User:Scarfaced Charley in 2011 - was originally named 'Early Israelite Campaigns', then renamed 'Battles in the biblical narrative of the conquest of Canaan' because 'more accurate', but then reverted back to 'Early Israelite Campaigns'. The article Early Israelite Campaigns was merged into Book of Joshua in 2017, so that led me to rename the template to 'Book of Joshua battles' with the reason 'As the historicity of these battles is questioned, it's best to focus on them as literary narratives from the Book of Joshua.' Someone else, @Benjitheijneb: had, however, added Battle of Gibeah (which redirects to Levite's concubine), a narrative in the Book of Judges 19–21, not Joshua. They themselves indicated some uncertainty over whether this battle fit the template by saying 'added Gibeah - unclear whether this should be in early or later Israelite campaigns'.
Similar issues emerged in the second template (originally created in 2013 by User:אשכנזישעיידן, who apparently became inactive in 2014). The fact that the title of the template is the vague 'Campaigns of the Israelites', the display name is 'Campaigns of the ancient kingdoms of Israel and Judah', and that this text links to the (really, really generic) article 'Jewish history' rather than a specific war, also shows no clear focus, scope or function. The same user Benjitheijneb was unsure whether Battle of Bitter Lakes was 'relevant' to the template (and also added some other ancient Israelite wars that are not mentioned in the Bible, but are in extrabiblical sources). @PatGallacher: removed it again saying 'not clear Bitter Lakes did involve Israel or Judah', but @AncientEgypt23: reverted this again, before @Greyshark09: removed it again. I made a final attempt at periodisation a few hours ago, but then concluded this is a mess that I can't make sense of.
(Addition 5 May) The third template - also created by now-blocked User:Scarfaced Charley in 2011 - has similar issues. The only criterion on which Scarfaced Charley appears to have based the distinctions 'early' and 'later' is whether they are mentioned in the Book of Joshua (early) or the books of Judges, Samuel, Kings and Chronicles (later). The problem is that there isn't a neat chronological distinction in the contents of these books; e.g. Judges 1 contains material also covered in Joshua 2 to 19 about the conquest of Canaan; Joshua just provides way more details about what should be the same time period. Once again this template fails WP:TG by not having a clear scope and function.
Are these campaignboxes lists of Hebrew Bible battles? Historical ancient Israelite/Judahite battles? Should they include fictional battles or only non-fictional ones? Battles involving Israelites only mentioned in extrabiblical sources? Both? We can't ask the creators anymore, because neither is active on Wikipedia anymore, so we have to figure this out ourselves. Besides, these aren't interlinked battles of well-defined "campaigns"; when I found them, both all three templates featured a rather random mix of historical, semi-historical and non-historical battles not arranged in any proper way (alphabetical, chronological, biblical canon-wise, etc.). Campaignboxes should really only be used for battles that are part of the same war, or a very closely linked set of wars (e.g. Template:Campaignbox French Wars of Religion; these wars are interrupted by short periods of peace, but clearly closely related within a timespan of 4 decades). The battles/wars in these campaignboxes are not clearly related, nor are they covering a limited timespan; the difference between the estimated dates of the oldest and most recent battles are about 500 years. These templates have just become dumping grounds for anything related to battles narrated in the Hebrew Bible and extrabiblical sources involving the ancient Israelites/Judahites, whether they are historical or not. That's not what campaignboxes are for. I've tried to make some improvements, but I now think they cannot be salvaged.
Whatever legitimate and useful function they may or could have had is much better carried out by Warfare in the Hebrew Bible (which was recently created by @BD2412:, and is set up to be broad enough to discuss any military actions mentioned in the Hebrew Bible or reflections on past or future wars, with ample space to discuss historicity), and the existing Category:Hebrew Bible battles (which in my view should focus on literary aspects of biblical texts about war) and Category:Wars of ancient Israel (which should in my view be exclusively about actual military history and not include any battles which scholars agree (probably) never happened). If these purposes of these two categories were not clear yet, then I propose that we agree on them right here, and right now, before more confusion can arise in the future. In any case, virtually every Wikipedia article that mentions the conquest of Canaan and other aspects of the Book of Joshua pretty much already says that the accounts are probably mostly if not entirely un-historical. I'm not sure if there is a rule for this yet (this may be a better question for WP:MILHIST), but I thought that English Wikipedia had a rule of not creating campaignboxes about wars that never happened, to maintain a clear distinction between history and literary fiction. (If there is none, then maybe we should introduce it). (Addition 5 May) I now remember: material related to the Three Kingdoms period in Chinese history has a strict policy of separating fact from fiction; the 14th-century novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms (ROTK) is considered historical fiction and not a reliable source for the end of the Han dynasty and military history of the Three Kingdoms. The Template:Three Kingdoms editnotice warns editors about this in many articles. Therefore, Template:Campaignbox End of Han and Template:Campaignbox Three Kingdoms may not feature fictonal battles such as the Battle of Hulao Pass that is based on the ROTK. In any case, I think we better delete these templates because they create more issues than they solve. Cheers, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 23:25, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
- Merge together into one - Having a single one of these would serve a significant use as a navigational aid, whether it's called a "campaignbox" or just a navbox. I think this would solve the issue of unclear scope of the smaller ones, which is problematic. There's a difference between this and the Three Kingdoms because stuff such as Hulao Pass can be clearly excluded. If we make it clear that the scope for the template is appearances in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, that should solve that issue. A template grouping these would serve a legitimate navigational aid for readers, and we shouldn't be putting editor beliefs about biblical inerrancy/errancy before reader aids. Hog Farm Talk 14:30, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
- Comment - I am not sure of the extent of this proposal and can't support or oppose it as a whole - are you proposing deleting the templates alone, or subsuming all the articles to Warfare in the Hebrew Bible? There are, as you've rightly pointed out, several events under several campaignboxes for which I am unsure of how the periodisation of the campaign box is delineated (i.e. whether a particular box should include pre-monarchic, united kingdom or two-kingdom eras), and having either a clearly-defined timeframe for each or merging all templates together would be much clearer. For the notion of merging templates into one as User:Hog Farm above supports, I can express support since it removes all the obscuring factors - the internal breakdown by period in Template:Campaignbox Campaigns of the Israelites would be particularly pertinent.
I also do have to note that the Bible, and particularly books covering later chronological periods, can and are used as semi-historical sources with collateral regional histories and archaeology where possible. The analogy with the Three Kingdoms era (also a period I edit within) is insufficient: there already exists the historical documents of the 3rd century Records of the Three Kingdoms and other historical sources to easily identify the entirely-fictional occurrences in the 14th century Romance of the Three Kingdoms, while no such reliable historical equivalent exists for the Bible. Even those events described under fantastical circumstances in the Bible can still be identified as propagandised accounts of historical battles, archaeology and collateral histories depending. While some articles might be reviewed for notability and potentially merged into the pages for the biblical book that describes them, they could not all be adequately merged into the Warfare in the Hebrew Bible - and for that matter, I fimly believe they shouldn't be anyway, since warfare as an article title on Wikipedia usually indicates a description of the manners, organisation and culture of waging war rather than a list of military engagements as wars of articles are (see Ancient warfare, Anglo-Saxon warfare, Early Germanic warfare et al.). In this regard, which already seems beyond the scope of debating the campaignboxes alone, I would have to oppose. Benjitheijneb (talk) 15:19, 5 May 2022 (UTC) - Proposal I appreciate both of your comments. It is true that the analogy with the Three Kingdoms period does not always work, because the distinction between historical and non-historical sources and events cannot be so easily made when it comes to the Hebrew Bible. The discussion Hog Farm and I are having at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history#May campaignboxes include fictional battles? has also resulted in a workable solution: replacing all these three campaignboxes with a navbox at the bottom, called Template:The Bible and warfare (Hog Farm's good suggestion), analogous to Template:The Bible and history. It retains the navigation function, it doesn't necessarily imply that these were historical battles (as we should expect from battles included in campaignboxes), and we can separate them from ancient Israelite battles not mentioned in the Hebrew Bible but that are mentioned in other sources. Important point: I found out that Template:Campaignbox Campaigns of Nebuchadnezzar II actually also includes 3 of the most recent Hebrew Bible battles that probably really happened. I've got no objections against this template, because it is concise enough in scope and function, time period, theme, and includes battles that are probably historical. This is a good example of how campaignboxes should work. But to group all Hebrew Bible battles together, that navbox "Template:The Bible and warfare" is probably a better idea.
- The scope of the Warfare in the Hebrew Bible article is a bit of a different issue, but an important one. I'd like to invite Benjitheijneb to come to Talk:Warfare in the Hebrew Bible to discuss what the best way of shaping that article is, and what the best title would be etc. I'm open to a lot of ideas, and the creator BD2412 is as well, we're still at an early stage, so useful imput would be much appreciated over there. "The goal is not to cram as many related articles as possible into one space. Ask yourself, does this help the reader in reading up on related topics? Take any two articles in the template. - Delete The above keep argument is effectively an argument that Template:MTV Network programs (and its brethren for other networks) should be deleted. While that may be true, it does not excuse having redundant navboxes. * Pppery * it has begun... 01:21, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Pppery:The navboxes are not redundant because they are navigated differently. If I gave you a book with definitions of words sorted by the date first used and a book with definitions of words in alphabetic order (and a book of just "musical" words), are they redundant? Are navboxes redundant if we have categories? Also, the Template:MTV Network programs has a very large number of past programs. The over-the-air networks don't include former programs in their templates. Maybe that template has gotten "too big". Maybe a sortable table would be more beneficial. Are there any statistics to evaluate the effectiveness of navbox Templates? How much are they used for navigating? WP is a big place and I don't know what tool might give those numbers. Perhaps the number needs to be normalized by the number of pages the template is on and how many views those pages get and how long it has been in use. Well, just the first number would be a start.
