Paramilitaries
I'm working on Category:People from Belfast by occupation. I'd like guidance please. Should we categorise paramilitary leaders as Category:Politicians from Belfast or as Category:Military personnel from Belfast, or should we have a paramilitary category? Or should we dodge the issue and just leave them as Category:People from Belfast? Rathfelder (talk) 20:27, 20 December 2021 (UTC)
- Please revert the changes to "criminal" categories per Wikipedia:Irish wikipedians' notice board/Archive16#POWs (mk_III) and Wikipedia talk:Categories for discussion/Archive 9#Proposed solution to categorising those imprisoned during The Troubles. FDW777 (talk) 22:08, 20 December 2021 (UTC)
The people I've categorised as criminals were all clearly convicted and sentenced as such. I dont think they should be categorised differently from those in other places.Rathfelder (talk) 23:51, 20 December 2021 (UTC)
- You are welcome to seek consensus to change the status quo then, instead of unilaterally ignoring it. As Talk:Bobby Sands#Category additions reverted again shows, the consensus still holds to this day. See also WP:ONUS. FDW777 (talk) 13:39, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
- I also suggest you head over to the Nelson Mandela article and try adding Category:South African criminals to his article and see how long it lasts. Categorising people with politically motivated convictions as "criminals" is not neutral nor encyclopedic, and serves no navigation purpose the existing categories don't already achieve. FDW777 (talk) 13:44, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
- I would still like advice on the question I posed. Rathfelder (talk) 18:09, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
- I'd probably breathe some life into the Category:Paramilitaries from Northern Ireland category tree, and create location specific sub-categories if needed. Despite the only current article in the category being an organisation, that tree should be for members due to the existince of Category:Paramilitary organisations based in Northern Ireland. FDW777 (talk) 15:02, 24 December 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you. I'm not inclined to think of being a paramilitary as an occupation. These people presumably had some sort of job, though few of the articles mention it. Rathfelder (talk) 21:33, 24 December 2021 (UTC)
- Their "day job", on the rare occasion they had them, would probably fail WP:CATDEF as not being a defining characteristic of the subject of the article. The article would almost always be about their paramilitary and/or political activity, not about them driving a taxi or serving pints (Gerry Adams). FDW777 (talk) 23:01, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
RFC on lead of devolution in the United kingdom
Their is an RFC going on here which may be of interest to editors who are interested in Northern Ireland.--Llewee (talk) 16:14, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
Handling sectarian vandalism
An anonymous vandal has been targeting the Hilltown article for over a year, repeatedly changing instances of "Northern Ireland" to "north of Ireland" (the IP address is different each time, but I presume that it's the same person). Continually reverting their edits is wearisome and could constitute edit warring, so I thought I'd ask here if there was a better way of handling this situation. It'd be nice to see either the article semi-protected or the user blocked. Zacwill (talk) 00:51, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
- Update: article has been semi-protected. Zacwill (talk) 19:03, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- If you're ever after a admin for things like this, feel free to ping me. I tend to be the one most active in Ireland/Northern Ireland issues. Canterbury Tail talk 11:41, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
User script to detect unreliable sources
I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (
John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.
)
and turns it into something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.
