WikiProject Climate ChangeThe WikiProject Climate change (shortcut WP:PROCC ) is a collaborative effort to improve our articles related to human-caused climate change, as well as to climate change throughout Earth's history. For more information about WikiProjects, please see Wikipedia:WikiProjects and Wikipedia:WikiProject best practices. Please feel free to join this project by adding your user name to the list of participants! |
Scope
This WikiProject Climate change covers all climate change articles. The major focus should be on articles relating to human-caused climate change. This includes
- physical causes and physical effects
- effects on the biosphere
- effects on humans
- mitigation, adaptation and geo-engineering
- politics & public opinion/protest
Many articles might include both physical and social aspects. The WikiProject can help bring people together with different expertise.
Sub-areas
There are also currently three focused areas / task forces:
- Following up on the Africa Climate Change workshop, we also have a Africa-specific task force
- The figures page coordinates work among those who want to work on figures and graphs
- Climate justice task force is to coordinate work on topics related to climate justice, environmental justice and climate change and society.
Guidelines, tools and advice
Tools and advice
- Use and contribute to a style guide for climate change articles
- See /sources for guidance on sourcing and a collection of high quality sources.
Citing correctly from the IPCC reports
You can use the premade citations of IPCC assessment reports which can be found at Wikipedia:IPCC citation and Wikipedia:IPCC citation/AR6 for the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report. They are available in different citation styles (long and short style).
General guidance videos
Recordings of presentations that explain how to contribute to the objectives of WikiProject Climate change and how to edit climate change related articles are collated in this section:
- Recording of a webinar (November 2020): As part of #Wiki4Climate, a week of Wikipedia editing on climate change topics, User:Phoebe takes us through how Wikipedia works and how to get started as a new editor. See third video in Youtube Playlist here. Or see direct link on Youtube here: https://youtu.be/aJBckuPRoiw (cannot be hyperlinked for technical reasons).
- Recording of a presentation at Wikimania (August 2019): User:Phoebe presented in this session. Video clip available in Wikimedia Commons, see thumbnail on the right. Presentation slides available here.
Tagging articles and editing in a controversial topic
Any articles that are within the scope of this project should be tagged with the project banner WikiProject Climate change. You may also find {{WikiProjectBanners}} useful.
As climate change can be a controversial topic, our pages have 'extra protection' against disruptive editing, POV pushing and incivility, called WP:Discretionary sanctions. You can place {{Ds/talk notice|cc|long}} on the article talk page. Make sure to inform individual editors of the discretionary sanctions in a friendly way on their talk page using {{subst:alert|cc}}, as only informed editors will be kept to the higher standards.
Languages other than English
You can use the content in the English Wikipedia articles to improve other language versions. Useful links:
- There is a page on meta which compares the main climate change Wikipedia article across several languages here.
- There is also a climate translation project here.
- A previous discussion on the different aspects of working across several languages is available here.

- This is for 3253 articles that are in the Category on Climate Change (note: the number of articles with the WikiProject Climate Change tag is slightly higher, see table on the right).
- Statistically it means about 100 pageviews per climate change article per day. However, many articles get far higher pageviews and many get far fewer. Communication channels
The main on-wiki communication channels are generally the article, user or project talk pages, such as the talk page of this WikiProject, see here.
If you feel like a more "personal" way of communicating with members of this WikiProject or other people who want to edit climate change content on Wikipedia then we recommend this Slack channel called "Wiki4Climate" to you: Join Slack channel. It was established in November 2020 to support the first online edit-a-thon on climate change topics and it was decided to keep it running for the foreseeable future. You are welcome to join, the more the merrier.
There is also a Twitter Handle @Wiki4Climate that you can follow (and help populate as we plan to rotate the owners of this twitter handle).

In case you don't know about this tool, it's under "special pages" (under "upload file" and "what links here"). For example, see the tree for cat Climate Change NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 16:31, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
Category:Climate change stubs has now been created to collect stub articles within the scope of this project. Please feel free to put the e {{climate-change-stub}} template onto any article that should be in the category. I am thinking 'Atmospheric science stubs' should be a sub category of Climate Change stubs rather than the other way around as it has been set up. crandles (talk) 19:16, 7 October 2019 (UTC) |
