Deleting old/obsolete/incorrect images that I am author of.
These images that I have uploaded and created are no longer accurate, the most recent version I made a mistake on as well. I want to upload a new version that is correct. I have been advised to overwrite them. The file description says "You may not overwrite this file." I put in codes for speedy deletion due to author request. These were reverted. Can someone please help me resolve this? I feel like it should be much easier to update images that I am the author and uploader of. *They will be replaced with a correct version* What sense is it to have multiple versions just stacked up on the sidebar? Thank you for any help you can provide.

Since it is a chart of separate organizations, I can see why it could be considered a "synthesis" of published materials. - Those images are on Wikimedia Commons. Here at Wikipedia we use the images from Commons and have an upload link to it, but Commons is responsible for it's own policies on updating, overwriting etc. So you'll need to ask there. Usually overwriting is frowned upon because an image can be in use on lots of different language Wikipedias, and changing one image on Commons can have repercussions everywhere the image is used. e.g. That image could be being used to highlight mistakes in images on Commons, if you fix it, you'll break the point of the article without realising. - X201 (talk) 13:47, 19 April 2022 (UTC)

- It appears to me that the 'community' may fall within one or both of the 'districts', but it would need someone who understands Canadian geopolitical nomenclature (both now and in the 1880's) and its applications within infoboxes to determine the most appropriate resolution to this question. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.196} 90.197.101.71 (talk) 21:44, 19 April 2022 (UTC)

Why is the HD getting lots of "The time allocated for running scripts has expired." ?
I am seeing lots of red errors for "The time allocated for running scripts has expired" on this page (Help Desk). What is the cause? Is it the large table in the section "When headers of tables are made sticky (in preferences>gadgets) "wikitable" and "wikitable sortable" behave differently. How to resolve?"? The table is hidden, but I assume it is still processed. Is there a way to hide it so that it won't be processed? Or is that even the problem and something else is causing the script errors? I'm not seeing the errors at WP:THQ and it has lots more threads than the HD usually. RudolfRed (talk) 03:48, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

Gosaikunda and Silu
Recently I edited Gosaikunda, connecting it to Silu (song) and Silu (film). Both these last articles say Silu is another name for Gosaikunda and they clearly refer to the sacred lake. Another editor reverted my edits, saying "I'm not sure how the two are connected". I know you cannot cite Wikipedia as a source and I have no access to the offline media cited as sources, but is not being sure of something a reason to revert someone elses edit? As a remedy I made a connection in the "See also", but I it's not clear what the connection is this way. Was I wrong for relying on the other articles? --Judithcomm (talk) 12:44, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, Judithcomm. You were bold and made a change; another editor disagreed and reverted your change. This is part of the normal process of achieving consensus: the next step is to discuss the matter with the other editor, and any other editors who are interested in the matter. Please see WP:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle for more information. ColinFine (talk) 14:28, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
Regarding articles lacking sources
Why don't we just delete/CSD all unreferenced articles per WP:OR and WP:N? Clearly if an article had no sources then it shouldn't be included in Wikipedia, am I wrong? --The Tips of Apmh 13:13, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
- Not having any sources doesn't mean it fails WP:N, as in many cases, sources could be added to demonstrate notability. And WP:OR is a reason to fix an article, not to delete it- although if it's all OR and cannot be fixed, then that would be a reason to delete. Joseph2302 (talk) 13:42, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
- @The Tips of Apmh: The basic Wikipedia goal is to have an article for every notable subject, so you are "wrong" in a limited sense. If the subject is not notable, the article should be deleted. If notable, the article should be improved, not deleted. The problem here is that the notability of the subject of an unreferenced article is hard to evaluate. Now that the "draft article" system has been fully operational for awhile, aggressively moving unreferenced articles into draft space makes sense. -Arch dude (talk) 14:11, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
- We only delete BLP articles that have no sourcing. The criteria for deletion isn't the same as being well sourced. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 14:15, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
- If an article has no possible sources, then it should be deleted. If sources exist, but are not currently cited in the article, the correct way forward is to improve the article by rewriting it while correctly citing the sources. Is an appeal possible after an UTRS ban and revocation of talk page access?
Wikipedia:UTRS says that UTRS bans are possible. After an UTRS ban, is it possible to appeal? I.hate.spam.mail.here (talk | contributions) 20:48, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
- @I.hate.spam.mail.here: Your question is confusing to me. The UTRS is the system for reviewing block requests. I'm not sure what an UTRS ban means, let alone how one would appeal. Are you referring to someone who is banned from using the tool? (That page is confusing, BTW, if any UTRS admins are watching). Maybe this will help? Wikipedia:Guide to appealing blocks. There are also several admins you can reach out to in Wikipedia:Unblock Ticket Request System#Tool administrators if you are still stuck. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 21:54, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Timtempleton: I was just curious. I don't personally know anyone who's blocked right now. I.hate.spam.mail.here (talk | contributions) 21:55, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
- @I.hate.spam.mail.here: UTRS bans are temporary, though long. Should someone acquire one, they will be able to appeal if they stay off the (blocked) site. Obviously, given that a UTRS ban means having failed the appeal process sufficiently to lose Talk Page Access and then irritating the UTRS admins, very strong evidence of a change of character would be required. Most likely though significant positive editing on another language project. Nosebagbear (talk) 22:06, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

Creating an article over a redirect to a different person

- Don't worry about doing anything yourself. When you decide to submit the draft for review (using the submission template, which the draft doesn't yet contain) the Reviewer will, if they decide to accept it (which although I'm not a reviewer seems to me likely, it looks good), themself sort out disambiguation and redirect issues as appropriate. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.197.101.71 (talk) 16:21, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

- Nothing of any consequence seems to link to the existing redirect [5], and I don't think there is any policy against moving an article for a clearly notable topic over a redirect for an obscure one. The article just needs a hatnote saying "for Jesse Lawson the guitarist, see Sleeping with Sirens", or something of the sort. AndyTheGrump (talk) 16:38, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

Are users allowed to delete reasonable comments other users leave on their Talk pages?
Hi there - I have been following a situation on the ThorCon_nuclear_reactor where User:Wickey was wrestling with people over things like having a notice that some of the content came from Citizendium. I went to Wickey's Talk page thinking to leave a comment, and happened to look at its history, where I noted that Wickey seemed to have DELETED two comments left on his Talk page by User:Macquigg (with whom Wickey has been disputing over on the Talk page of ThorCon nuclear reactor). Is this allowed? It seems like Wickey is trying to obscure the fact that they made reckless edits on the ThorCon article including removing the Citizendium license notice without gaining any consensus from other writers. It looks like very bad wiki behavior to me. Can someone please take a look? Wickey's entire enteraction about the Thorcon article seems unnecessarily heated and impolite, and then deleting genuine communications from another user made me personally reluctant to engage with Wickey myself.Harborsparrow (talk) 17:43, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

- Thanks, this is helpful. I'll take it then that the user was aware of the content of the messages they deleted and did not want them seen on the Talk page. Good enough. It startled me; in 15 years on here, it's never dawned on me to delete what people put on my Talk page, even if I wasn't best pleased by it. So, good to know.Harborsparrow (talk) 17:56, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, the purpose of a user talk page is to talk to the user. If the user in question has deleted something from their talk page, they must have visited the page to see the comment, and read it. Whether or not they respond, they can be held responsible for having seen the information, so if (for example) they were warned to stop doing something, deleting the warning then obviates them from saying "I didn't see the warning". If they deleted it, they saw it. --Jayron32 18:54, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

Need help
Hi, I need help to categorize templates, it is not easy as I hoped. Can anyone teach me how to categorize templates? - CafeGurrier66 (talk • contribs) 19:30, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
History merge question
There is a paid editor who created a new article Draft:Switch Mobility using content copied from the article Optare. After a lot of back and forth with this editor on their talk page, my thoughts are that it would be best to merge some of the relevant content from the draft article into the Optare article since they are the same entity, and then request that Optare be moved to article title Switch Mobility to reflect the new name of the company. However, since the paid editor wrote a bunch of new material in the draft article, I understand the history of that article needs to be preserved so I am thinking a history merge would be the way to go (but I could be wrong).
I am not an expert on history merges, so I want to make sure I am doing it correctly. Should I be:
- Merging the material with an edit summary linking the appropriate revision from which I am getting the material from, and then
- Requesting a history merge upon completion using {{Histmerge}}?
Please feel free to trout me if there is a completely different procedure I should be using, or if I am missing something really obvious. I just don't want a make a mess. Thank you. Aoi (青い) (talk) 20:13, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
- Optare is much better written. Draft:Switch Mobility is written in PR-speak. Optare manufactures buses, while Switch Mobility "offers solutions". If there's any relevant content in the draft, you may need to translate it into plain English. Maproom (talk) 20:38, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

Can you make multiple user sandboxes for different subjects? I'm trying to make something, but I would have to clear my current sandbox. Thank you. TatiVogue (talk) 02:04, 22 April 2022 (UTC)

Change picture -- Jeffrey James
Hello, I have attempted to upload a current picture from 2022 of Australian television presenter, Jeffrey James. I have added it to the Wikipedia files for images and released the copyright. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Jeffrey_James-2022.jpg#filelinks But it does not attach to the profile https://en.wikipedia.org /wiki/Jeffrey_James Can someone please assist me in publishing the image on the selected page. I hold the copyright of the image as advised in the license release. Thank you. (PS: My attempt to do this resulted in the deletion in an earlier photograph from seven years ago. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gweiloasiaguy (talk • contribs) 12:30, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
- Gweiloasiaguy To hold the copyright, generally you must have taken the image. If you took the image, do you have an association with Mr. James? 331dot (talk) 12:39, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Gweiloasiaguy. Some sort of formal verification is going to be need to confirm that you own the copyright of this image. Generally, it's the person who takes a photo who is considered to be the copyright holder in most cases. Did you take this photo? If you did, then just follow the instructions given in the template I added to the file's page. If you took this photo and you've already published somewhere on line (for example, on your personal webiste), then if you can provide a link to that website which shows that the image has been released under the same license that you used for Wikipedia, then that could be another way to verify your copyright ownership. If you didn't take the image yourself, then you can't really upload it to Wikipedia without having the copyright holder email their consent to Wikipedia or providing a link to a website that shows they've released the file under a license acceptable to Wikipedia. Just for reference, most of the images you find online are going to be considered to be under copyright (even if there's no copyright notice) unless it clearly says they're not; moreover, many websites host images that aren't the original content of the website which means the website doesn't own the copyright over such images. So, if you didn't take this photo yourself, you'll need to find out did and then get that person to release the photo under a license that Wikipedia accepts. -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:01, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
How to create an article directly?
I've been on Wikipedia for a little while now and have even made my own article through AfC. I'm autoconfirmed, so I'm allowed. I looked at the FAQ and was led to user subpages, but the tutorial was 12 years old and I don't know how I could create an article directly through that. So basically, how do I create an article without going through AfC?
Asparagusus (talk) 13:30, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
- Asparagusus If the subject you want to write about is already mentioned in another Wikipedia article, you can turn that mention into a link, which will appear red after you click Publish. You can then click the red link to begin creating the article. You can also edit your personal sandbox and then move its contents into the encyclopedia yourself with the Move function(not a bad idea as you can then save your progress gradually and have less fear of deletion). 331dot (talk) 13:35, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks!
- Asparagusus (talk) 14:40, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
- The way I have created every article I've written has been by creating a user space draft. Type the title you want to create into the search bar. You will be told that the page doesn't exist - click on the link to create it, and it should give you the option to create a draft in your user space. Work it up until you're done, then move it into article space. Sure, you can create it in article space if you want, but it will be out immediately into the review queue, so if you don't get it finished in one go and come back to it an hour later, you might find a bunch of tags on it - better, in my view, to knock it into decent shape before releasing it to the perils of review. If you tag it as a formal edit request(click for instructions) other editors will be more likely to see it and respond. Link to WP research resources
A couple months ago I received a notification that I qualified for access to various research resources, such as JSTOR, newspapers, etc. I registered with a few of these; however, I've lost the link to the main page of listings, and I'm not sure whether these are stored in Wikipedia or the Commons. Would someone be kind enough to provide the link? From there, I'll be good to go, meaning I don't need any other information. Thanks. Allreet (talk) 15:19, 22 April 2022 (UTC)

COI determination sought
I am seeking advice or, better still, a determination as to whether my direct edits to the article on Joseph DeCarolis would constitute a WP:COI. Having read that policy, I do not remotely believe they could. But another contributor, on limited information, has stated that there is indeed a conflict of interest situation. I would therefore like to resolve this question before proceeding, lest events deteriorate. Most of the necessary background can be found at Talk:Joseph DeCarolis#Sandbox development. Beyond that, I have a general desire to improve the coverage of significant persons in the energy domain, as evidenced by having started articles on Carl-A. Fechner and Hartmut Bossel. My edits to the page on Professor DeCarolis fall into that camp too. I am also happy to expand on the background that I have provided as required. Finally to reinforce that there is no friendship involved and my academic contact has been negligible. The sum total of that contact is acknowledged in Morrison (2018:62) (doi:10.1016/j.esr.2017.12.010) thus: "Mark Howells and Joe DeCarolis kindly confirmed their motivations for releasing OSeMOSYS and TEMOA respectively." And that was five years back. Looking forward, I am highly unlikely to collaborate academically with Professor DeCarolis given his current move from academia to public service. I trust a satisfactory resolution can be found — and I do value the privilege of being able to contribute to Wikipedia in my subject area of energy system analysis, open data, and rapid decarbonization. - Hello, RobbieIanMorrison. I do not think that you have a COI that should prevent you from editing that article. The best place to involve other editors in that assessment is the Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard. Cullen328 (talk) 16:54, 22 April 2022 (UTC)

- FWIW, I agree that having once had an email exchange with someone, and working in the same academic discipline as them, is not enough to give you a substantive conflict of interest for the purposes of editing here. Girth Summit (blether) 17:22, 22 April 2022 (UTC)

redirecting one existing Wikipedia article to another
I'm having difficulty understanding the process for redirecting one existing Wikipedia article (i.e., Latromirus) to another (Parioscorpio). I also want to delete the content of the Latromirus article.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Kennethcgass (talk • contribs)
- I'm not sure if you mean you don't know how to perform the action, or if you mean you don't know how to determine when it is appropriate/when there is consensus to perform the action. From a purely technical standpoint if you wanted Latromirus to redirect to Parioscorpio, (and you are using a computer instead of a mobile device) you would push Edit on Latromirus, click in the edit window, hit CTRL+A to select all the text of the article, delete it, and then type #REDIRECT [[Parioscorpio]], then publish the page. That said, there is obviously more to it than that. For example, Latromirus is not mentioned anywhere in Parioscorpio, so someone searching for information on Latromirus would be confused at being redirected there. I would start with a merge discussion on Talk:Latromirus, wherein you lay out your reasoning for wanting it to redirect to Parioscorpio, see if there is consensus among editors of the two pages, and talk about what needs to be merged where. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 18:45, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
@Kennethcgass: After looking at some of the material, I agree with ONUnicorn that the appropriate thing is to start a merge discussion on the talk page. It looks like Latromirus doesn't currently warrant a separate article, as it is not officially described or named in the literature. The situation seems confused about the material described in the unofficially published writing: a part of the fossil material is claimed in a published paper to belong to Parioscorpio ( Anderson et al. 2021) leaving one to wonder about the rest. The shown reconstruction to my inexpert eye looks different enough to be a different species, although perhaps of the same genus, but the whole supposed Latromirus may be a melange of several different organisms and perhaps not reliably reconstructed. I think the two unofficially published papers and the associated name should have a mention somewhere (hence a merge), but maybe in Waukesha Biota instead of Parioscorpio. OTOH, maybe the two papers were too preliminary to warrant mention anywhere. (I note the authors of the preprint are 4 of 5 authors of one of the Parioscorpio published papers.) --R. S. How to edit the heading of a page?
Hi, I recently updated the page about Stoney Squaw Mountain (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoney_Squaw_Mountain). The derogatory word has been dropped, and the mountain is now called, "Stoney Mountain." I've updated the content to reflect that, but I'd like to re-name the heading for the page as well. You can’t move the page as you are not logged in and therefore you cannot have autoconfirmed rights (they’re required). You can either make an account and get autoconfirmed, or you can request a move here-
