Requested moves is a process for requesting the retitling (moving) of an article, template, or project page on Wikipedia. (For retitling files, categories and other items, see When not to use this page.)
Please read the article titling policy and the guideline regarding primary topics before moving a page or requesting a page move.
Any autoconfirmed user can use the Move function to perform most moves (see Help:How to move a page). If you have no reason to expect a dispute concerning a move, be bold and move the page. However, it may not always be possible or desirable to do this:
- Technical reasons may prevent a move: a page may already exist at the target title and require deletion, or the page may be protected from moves. See: § Requesting technical moves.
- Requests to revert recent, undiscussed, controversial moves may be made at WP:RM/TR. If the new name has not become the stable title, the undiscussed move will be reverted. If the new name has become the stable title, a requested move will be needed to determine the article's proper location.
- A title may be disputed, and discussion may be necessary to reach consensus: see § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves. The requested moves process is not mandatory, and sometimes an informal discussion at the article's talk page can help reach consensus.
- Unregistered users and new (not yet autoconfirmed) users are unable to move pages.
Requests are generally processed after seven days. If consensus is reached at or after this time, a reviewer will enact the request. If not, the request may be re-listed to allow more time for consensus to develop, or the discussion closed as "no consensus". See Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions for more details on the process.
Wikipedia:Move review can be used to contest the outcome of a move request as long as all steps are followed. If a discussion on the closer's talk page does not resolve an issue, then a move review will evaluate the close of the move discussion to determine whether or not the contested close was reasonable and consistent with the spirit and intent of common practice, policies, and guidelines.
When not to use this page
Separate processes exist for moving certain types of pages, and for changes other than page moves:
- Making an uncontroversial move – if you can, be bold and do it yourself! If you can't, see § Requesting technical moves.
- Renaming a category – propose the move at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
- Renaming a stub template – propose the move at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
- Renaming an image or other file – see Wikipedia:Moving a page § Moving a file page.
- Moves from draft namespace or user space – (new/unconfirmed users only) add
{{subst:submit}}
to the top of the article. See Wikipedia:Articles for creation. - Merging two articles – make a request at Wikipedia:Proposed mergers, or be bold and do it yourself.
- Requesting that page histories be merged – list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge.
- Contesting a move request close – use the Wikipedia:Move review process.
Undiscussed moves
Autoconfirmed editors may move a page without discussion if all of the following apply:
- No article exists at the new target title;
- There has been no discussion (especially no recent discussion) about the title of the page that expressed any objection to a new title; and
- It seems unlikely that anyone would reasonably disagree with the move.
If you disagree with such a move, and the new title has not been in place for a long time, you may revert the move. If you cannot revert the move for technical reasons, then you may request a technical move.
Move wars are disruptive, so if you make a bold move and it is reverted, do not make the move again. Instead, follow the procedures laid out in § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves.
Requesting technical moves
If you are unable to complete a move for technical reasons, you can request technical help below. This is the correct page if you tried to move a page, and you got an error message saying something like "You do not have permission to move this page, for the following reasons:".
If you are here because you want an admin to approve of your new article or your proposed page move, you are in the wrong place.
| |
- To list a technical request: the Uncontroversial technical requests subsection and insert the following code at the top of the list, filling in pages and reason:
{{subst:RMassist|current page title|new page title|reason=reason for move}}
This will automatically insert a bullet and include your signature. Please do not edit the article's talk page. - If you object to a proposal listed in the uncontroversial technical requests section, please move the request to the Contested technical requests section, append a note on the request elaborating on why, and sign with ~~~~. Consider pinging the requester to let them know about the objection.
- If your technical request is contested, or if a contested request is left untouched without reply, create a requested move on the article talk and remove the request from the section here. The fastest and easiest way is to click the "discuss" button at the request, save the talk page, and remove the entry on this page.

Requests to revert undiscussed moves
Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves
The discussion process is used for potentially controversial moves. A move is potentially controversial if either of the following applies:
- there has been any past debate about the best title for the page;
- someone could reasonably disagree with the move.
Use this process if there is any reason to believe a move would be contested. For technical move requests, such as to correct obvious typographical errors, see Requesting technical moves. The technical moves procedure can also be used for uncontroversial moves when the requested title is occupied by an existing article.
Do not create a new move request when one is already open on the same talk page. Instead, consider contributing to the open discussion if you would like to propose another alternative. Multiple closed move requests may be on the same page, but each should have a unique section heading.
Do not create a move request to rename one or more redirects. Redirects cannot be used as current titles in requested moves.
Requesting a single page move
To request a single page move, click on the "New section" tab of the talk page of the article you want moved, without adding a new subject/header, inserting this code:
{{subst:requested move|NewName|reason=Place here your rationale for the proposed page name change, ideally referring to applicable naming convention policies and guidelines, and providing evidence in support where appropriate. If your reasoning includes search engine results, please prioritize searches limited to reliable sources (e.g. books, news, scholarly papers) over other web results. You don't need to add your signature at the end, as this template will do so automatically.}}
Replace NewName
with the requested new name of the page (or with a simple question mark, if you want more than one possible new name to be considered). The template will automatically create the heading "Requested move 10 June 2021" and sign the post for you.
There is no need to edit the article in question. Once the above code is added to the Talk page, a bot will automatically add the following notification at the top of the article:
Note: Unlike other request processes on Wikipedia, such as Requests for comment, nominations need not be neutral. Make your point as best you can; use evidence (such as Google Ngrams and pageview statistics) and refer to applicable policies and guidelines, especially our article titling policy and the guideline on disambiguation and primary topics.
WikiProjects may subscribe to Article alerts to receive RM notifications. For example, Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Article alerts/Requested moves is transcluded to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Biography. RMCD bot notifies many of the other Wikiprojects listed on the talk page of the article to be moved to invite project members to participate in the RM discussion. Requesters should feel free to notify any other Wikiproject or noticeboard that might be interested in the move request, as long as this notification is neutral.
Single page move on a different talk page
Occasionally, a move request must be made on a talk page other than the talk page of the page to be moved. For example, a request to rename Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Resources to Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Reviewing and templates would need to take place at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Articles for creation because the talk page of the project page to be moved, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Articles for creation/Resources, is a redirect to that centralized discussion page. In this type of case, the requested move should be made using the following code:
{{subst:requested move|reason=(the reason for the page move goes here).|current1=(present title of page to be renamed)|new1=(proposed title of page)}}
Note that the |1=
unnamed parameter is not used, and that the |current1=
and |new1=
parameters are used similar to multiple page moves described below.
Requesting multiple page moves
A single template may be used to request multiple related moves. On one of the talk pages of the affected articles, create a request and format it as below. A sample request for three page moves is shown here (for two page moves, omit the lines for current3 and new3). For four page moves, add lines for current4 and new4, and so on. There is no technical limit on the number of multiple move requests, but before requesting very large multi-moves, consider whether a naming convention should be changed first. Discuss that change on the talk page for the naming convention, e.g., Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (sportspeople).
To request a multiple page move, edit at the bottom of the talk page of the article you chose for your request, without adding a new header, inserting this code:
{{subst:requested move
| current1 = Current title of page 1
| new1 = New title for page 1 with the talk page hosting this discussion
| current2 = Current title of page 2
| new2 = New title for page 2
| current3 = Current title of page 3
| new3 = New title for page 3
| reason = Place here your rationale for the proposed page name change, ideally referring to applicable naming convention policies and guidelines, and providing evidence in support where appropriate. If your reasoning includes search engine results, please prioritize searches limited to reliable sources (e.g. books, news, scholarly papers) over other web results. You don't need to add your signature at the end, as this template will do so automatically.}}
For example, to propose moving the articles Wikipedia
and Wiki
, put this template on Talk:Wikipedia
, and replace current2
with Wiki
. The discussion for all affected articles is held on the talk page of the article at page 1 (Talk:Wikipedia
). Do not sign a request with ~~~~
as the template does this automatically. Do not skip pairs of numbers.
RMCD bot automatically places a notice section on the talk page of the additional pages that are included in your request, advising that the move discussion is in progress, where it is, and that all discussion for all pages included in the request should take place at that one location.
Occasionally the discussions for significant multi-move requests may be hosted on WikiProject talk pages or other pages in Project namespace. For multi-move discussions hosted on a page which is not itself proposed to be moved, specify |current1=Current title of page 1
for the first page to move.
Request all associated moves explicitly
Please list every move that you wish to have made in your request. For example, if you wish to move Cricket (disambiguation) to Cricket because you do not believe the sport is the primary topic for the search term "Cricket", then you actually want to move two pages, both Cricket (disambiguation) and Cricket. Thus you must list proposed titles for each page affected by your request. For example, you might propose:
If a new title is not proposed for the sport, it is more difficult to achieve consensus for a new title for that article. A move request that does not show what to do with the material at its proposed target, such as:
is incomplete. Such requests may be completed as a request to decide the best new title by discussion.

Commenting on a requested move
All editors are welcome to contribute to the discussion regarding a requested page move. There are a number of standards that Wikipedians should practice in such discussions:
- When editors recommend a course of action, they write Support or Oppose in bold text, which is done by surrounding the word with three single quotes on each side, e.g.
'''Support'''
. - Comments or recommendations are added on a new bulleted line (that is, starting with *) and signed by adding
~~~~
to the end. Responses to another editor are threaded and indented using multiple bullets. - The article itself should be reviewed before any recommendation is made; do not base recommendations solely on the information supplied by other editors. It may also help to look at the article's edit history. However, please read the earlier comments and recommendations, as well as prior move requests. They may contain relevant arguments and useful information.
- Vested interests in the article should be disclosed per Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI.
When participating, please consider the following:
- Editors should make themselves familiar with the article titling policy at Wikipedia:Article titles.
- Other important guidelines that set forth community norms for article titles include Wikipedia:Disambiguation, specific naming conventions, and the manual of style.
- The debate is not a vote; please do not make recommendations that are not sustained by arguments.
- Explain how the proposed article title meets or contravenes policy and guidelines rather than merely stating that it does so.
- Nomination already implies that the nominator supports the name change, and nominators should refrain from repeating this recommendation on a separate bulleted line.[a]
- Do not make conflicting recommendations. If you change your mind, use strike-through to retract your previous statement by enclosing it between <s> and </s> after the bullets, and de-bold the struck words, as in "•
SupportOppose".
Please remember that reasonable editors will sometimes disagree, but that arguments based in policy, guidelines, and evidence have more weight than unsupported statements. When an editor offers an argument that does not explain how the move request is consistent with policies and guidelines, a reminder to engage in constructive, on-topic discussion may be useful. On the other hand, a pattern of responding to requests with groundless opinion, proof by assertion, and ignoring content guidelines may become disruptive. If a pattern of disruptive behavior persists after efforts are made to correct the situation through dialogue, please consider using a dispute resolution process.
Closing a requested move
Any uninvolved editor in good standing may close a move request. Please read the closing instructions for information on how to close a move request. The Simple guide to closing RM discussions details how to actually close a requested move discussion.
Relisting a requested move
Relisting a discussion moves the request out of the backlog up to the current day in order to encourage further input. The decision to relist a discussion is best left to uninvolved experienced editors upon considering, but declining, to close the discussion. In general, discussions should not be relisted more than once before properly closing.[b] Users relisting a debate which has already been relisted, or relisting a debate with a substantial discussion, should write a short explanation on why they did not consider the debate sufficient to close. While there is no consensus forbidding participation in a requested move discussion after relisting it, many editors consider it an inadvisable form of supervote. If you want to relist a discussion and then participate in it, be prepared to explain why you think it was appropriate.
Relisting can be done using {{subst:relisting}}
, which automatically includes the relister's signature, and which must be placed at the very end of the initial request after the move requester's signature (and subsequent relisters' signatures). When a discussion has been relisted a bot partially underlines the "Discuss" link in the lists of debates: (Discuss).
When a relisted discussion reaches a resolution, it may be closed at any time according to the closing instructions; there is no required length of time to wait before closing a relisted discussion.
If discussion has become stale, or it seems that discussion would benefit from more input of editors versed in the subject area, consider more widely publicizing the discussion, such as by notifying WikiProjects of the discussion using the template {{RM notification}}. Banners placed at the top of the talk page hosting the move request can often be used to identify WikiProjects suitable for notification.
Notes
- ^ A nominator making a procedural nomination with which they may not agree is free to add a bulleted line explaining their actual position. Additional detail, such as sources, may also be provided in an additional bullet point if its inclusion in the nomination statement would make the statement unwieldy. Please remember that the entire nomination statement is transcluded into the list on this page.
- ^ Despite this, discussions are occasionally relisted more than once.
Current discussions
- This section lists all requests filed or identified as potentially controversial which are currently under discussion.
- (Discuss) – Denim on Denim (song) → Denim on Denim – - I am requesting that this page for Tebey's song "Denim on Denim" be moved to be simply titled "Denim on Denim". The page has already accumulated more views than the current "Denim on Denim" page in just two days after it was changed from a redirect (https://pageviews.toolforge.org/?project=en.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&redirects=0&range=latest-20&pages=Denim_on_Denim_(song)%7CDenim_on_Denim). Additionally, the song is a a platinum-certified, Top 10 Canada Country hit, while the album did not chart anywhere. The song page also has eleven sources in contrast to just four from the album page. Lastly, Tebey (the song’s artist) averages 33 daily views on Wikipedia, in comparison to Library Voices (the album’s artist) who only average 2 daily views (https://pageviews.toolforge.org/?project=en.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&redirects=0&range=latest-20&pages=Tebey%7CLibrary_Voices). This would suggest that the song would be much more likely to generate interest as the main "Denim on Denim" page than the album. Overall, I believe all of this information should support the proposal that this page "Denim on Denim (song)" should be moved to "Denim on Denim", while the current album page "Denim on Denim" should become "Denim on Denim (album)". If further disambiguation is needed, because there is more than one sculpture of the same person with an article, then disambiguation by location rather than the sculptor is usually better. An additional complication is that some sources translate the name as National Democratic Greek League, but all use the acronym "EDES". - (Discuss) – Bilozirya → Biloziria – Correct romanization per WP:UKR. These changes serve the article naming WP:CRITERIA of recognizability, naturalness, precision, conciseness, and consistency. These are all small settlements in Ukraine. The current article names have spellings according to a less-appropriate standard, have non-Ukrainian spelling, or are just quirky or misspelled. I have not tested to see if any of the subjects have only a single most WP:COMMONNAME, but if they do then it is most likely to correspond to our standard romanization. Each proposed spelling is romanized according to the Ukrainian National system, which derives the official Latin-alphabet spelling, has been adopted by the UNGEGN and BGN/PCGN (source of Ukrainian place-name spellings on the authoritative GeoNames database), and in each of these cases also corresponds to a variant of the widely used modified Library of Congress romanization. I confirmed Ukrainian names by looking at the corresponding article on Ukrainian Wikipedia. Checked each new title for conflicts and adjusted the title disambiguation. Some of these have been renamed previously, but without any discussion. —Michael Z. 20:30, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Re-latinization of Romanian → Modernisation of the Romanian language – "Re-latinisation" is a biased term and may lead to misunderstandings: there were a lot of administrative terms that were changed because the administrative system changed, but among those terms there were also latin terms like "spătar" which was a function in the state administration and it comes from the latin word "spata" (sword) Thus, while old words were taken out of use, some new ones were imported. Old words, were not just slavic/turkish/greek but also latin. While the new words were mainly french/italian/neo-latin because they fitted better to the latin core of romanian, there were also german words like "pantofi" (from german Pantoffel ) In Western-Europe, starting from Age of Enlightenment, there were a lot of neo-latin borrowings, romanian just got to this "trend" a bit later on. Romanian got modernized in the 19th century, it did not get "re-latinized" Nicu.Obsescu (talk) 16:10, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Religious Zionist Party → National Union–Tkuma – The page was recently moved by David O. Johnson to the current title. I believe there is confusion between a political party and an electoral list. The article is about the party established in 1998, first known as "Tkuma", and now renamed to "National Union". But "The Religious Zionism" is the name of electoral list established in 2021, which include three parties: National Union, Otzma Yehudit, and Noam. The Central Elections Committee website shows that "The Religious Zionism" list consists of several parties including "National Union–Tkuma". It's explained in Hebrew articles here and here. - (Discuss) – Hardcore (punk rock and heavy metal subgenre) → Beatdown hardcore – The move to Hardcore (punk rock and heavy metal subgenre) was entirely discussed, and this current name makes very little sense: 1. "Hardcore" is well established as an umbrella term to encompass hardcore punk and it's subgenres. 2. "Hardcore" is more commonly used to refer to hardcore punk than it is a "punk rock and heavy metal subgenre". This name seems like a massive conflation sources using ambiguous language when there is legitimate sources discussing the genre, just doing so under the sourced alternate names. I believe of the sourced names for this "Beatdown hardcore" is the WP:COMMON as it turns up 89,300 results on Google, compared to "tough guy hardcore" with 66,600 and "moshcore" with 80,100. - (Discuss) – Bodhi Tree → The Bodhi tree – The inclusion of "The" can be used to distinguish between the one particular tree under which Gautama Buddha is said to have attained bodhi and the other trees that are called bodhi trees, e.g., all trees of the species Ficus religiosa or the trees that are direct descendants (e.g., the Mahabodhi tree or the Anandabodhi tree) or clones from cuttings (e.g., the Sri Maha Bodhi Tree or the Bodhi Tree in Honolulu) of the particular tree under which the Buddha sat. (See WP:THE: "
If a term with a definite article has a different meaning with respect to the same term without the article, the term with the article can be used as the name of a Wikipedia article about that meaning.
") Also, the sources are mixed about capitalization of "tree". So is the Wikipedia article. In fact most of the sources that I have checked use lowercase for "tree". Brittanica uses lowercase. The CNN article cited in the first sentence does too. In a web search, many instances that capitalize the word "tree" are doing so for the names of institutions and enterprises rather than for the name of this particular tree (e.g., Bodhi Tree Bookstore, Bodhi Tree Salon & Spa, Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort, Bodhi Tree Juice Co., Bodhi Tree Massage and Skincare, Bodhi Tree Guesthouse & Studio, Bodhi Tree Educational Foundation, Bodhi Tree Cafe). When sources are mixed, Wikipedia generally prefers lowercase. But "Bodhi tree" (without "The") is more ambiguous, as it could refer either to this article or the article about the species of tree or one of the other individual trees. — BarrelProof (talk) 04:38, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Bridget Jones's Diary → Bridget Jones's Diary (novel) – The article about the original Bridget Jones's Diary film gets about four times as many pageviews as the article about the original Diary novel, and both were of a similar era (so this is not an issue of disambiguating a film based on some classic work of literature that has arguably greater long-term significance – at least not unless we consider Pride and Prejudice, and that is naturally disambiguated already). I just fixed incorrect incoming links from about 15 other articles, as it has been mistakenly assumed that the article at the base name is about the film. There are probably more such incorrect incoming links. Many people probably don't even know there was a novel at all, but are aware of the film. The situation is even more skewed for the sequel, with a page view ratio of about 9:1 in favour of the film. (Both films also have similarly named soundtrack albums, but that does not seem especially important for purposes of this discussion.) — BarrelProof (talk) 22:58, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Robert Taylor (actor) → Robert Taylor (American actor) – Since there has been [for the past 15 years, as of 6 July 2006] an entry for Robert Taylor (Australian actor), "Robert Taylor (actor)" thus existed for those 15 years as incomplete disambiguation and should have been redirected to the Robert Taylor#Arts and entertainment dab page which has 76 entries, 51 of which use the form "Robert Taylor". However, the lead sentence of the American actor's entry states, "Robert Taylor (born Spangler Arlington Brugh; August 5, 1911 – June 8, 1969) was an American film and television actor and singer who was one of the most popular leading men of his time." Taking that into account, I would also support an alternative to the proposed move, designating the American as the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC — Robert Taylor (actor) → Robert Taylor and Robert Taylor → Robert Taylor (disambiguation). — Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 21:32, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Decimation (Roman army) → Decimation (military punishment) – This move was suggested by several editors during Talk:Decimation (Roman army)#Requested move 28 April 2021; but there was no formal proposal, and so could be no WP:CONSENSUS. I now make that formal proposal. Although the practice is often associated with the Roman Republic and Roman Empire, the article makes it clear that it was not limited to there. Alexander the Great ordered one before Rome and Macedon ever came into conflict. There are also examples through the 17th to 20th centuries. It is uncertain if Marshal Luigi Cadorna actually ordered a decimation after one of the repeated bloodbaths at Caporetto during WWI, but the question of whether or not he did has been discussed seriously in scholarly literature; in addition to the enwiki article, see it:Decimazione#La decimazione nel Regio Esercito. Even if Rome has the dubious privilege of claiming priority, the qualifier (Roman army) is too narrow. - (Discuss) – 1989 Tiananmen Square protests → 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre – 1. The current title does not meet WP:COMMONNAME, just use Google Trends and compare and contrast Tiananmen Square protests with Tiananmen Square Massacre to see the extent of how the current title fails to meet common name usage regarding the event. See list of events named massacres and laugh at how Tiananmen Square is surrounded by events still using massacre in its name but it isn't. 2. The incident is not famous for the protests as much as they are for the government crackdown and subsequent killings that occurred. 3. If anything, Tiananmen Square Incident would be fundamental improvement due to the undisclosed amounts of how many specifically were murdered by police, however it is undisputed the killings were in double-digits so to assume the number of deaths is low is an act of misinformation. - (Discuss) – List of Colorado Department of Highways bridges on the National Register of Historic Places → Colorado Department of Highways – Restore article topic to be the "Colorado Department of Highways", the predecessor to today's Colorado Department of Transportation. The article was abruptly moved without discussion on 2 June 2011, with edit summary "more accurate title based on content". I did not like the move--it seemed like an unnecessary and unfriendly action--but could not at the time dispute it, amidst other brouhaha going on. Just a little later there was a ridiculous amount of contention about quite-reasonable-in-my-view Architects of the United States Forest Service article, at its Talk page and AFD Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/United States Forest Service Architecture Group, which ran from 19 July to 27 July 2011. The move prevented this from developing to be similar to that USFS architects article, or to Architects of the National Park Service, which was created 11 October 2012 and was developed cooperatively. Anyhow, looking at this list-article now, I see it as a non-standard list-article (there are none like it for any other state), and as inferior to standard-type list-article List of bridges on the National Register of Historic Places in Colorado (one of 52 members of Category:Lists of bridges on the National Register of Historic Places by state). The current "List of Colorado Department of Highways bridges on the National Register of Historic Places" is certainly just a subset of that, and not a very good one (lacks photos and other info in the standard-type list, lacks discussion/sourcing about Colorado Department of Highways role). It is not clear if the current list has really been managed to be only the bridges, and all of the bridges, that were designed and/or built by the Colorado Department of Highways before it became the Colorado Department of Transportation. I suggest restoring the article to be about the Colorado Department of Highways, with an intro similar to the 2 June 2011 version just before the move. And development about projects and programs and people (engineers, architects, builders, etc.) of the Colorado Department of Highways. Like, say, Architects of the National Park Service. Perhaps it could end up being renamed. The existing list-article at its current title is just no good, IMHO, though. Doncram (talk) 06:48, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Wikipedia:IPs are human too → Wikipedia:IP editors are human too – This article conveys that WP:AGF, WP:NEWBIES, WP:CIVIL, etc. also apply when interacting with IP editors. It attempts doing so by pointing out that, while actions performed by non-registered humans leave traces of IP addresses instead of usernames, these non-registered humans are, first and foremost, humans. Yet the article title refers to IP editors as "IPs", thereby essentially equating IP editors with IP addresses, which is dehumanizing. IP addresses are not people (WP:NOTHUMAN). Put differently, referring to IP editors as "IPs", is emphasizing the IP aspect, instead of the human aspect, e.g. "editor", of these contributors. Language is powerful. I suggest moving this article to Wikipedia:IP editors are human too. There are other alternatives, such as "Unregistered users are...", but in my experience it's already common practice to refer to IP editors as IP editors. Even the lead of this article already contains the phrase, in (emphasis mine) "[...] is generated by IP editors, over 80% of edits [...]". 143.176.30.65 (talk) 12:38, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Ryanair Flight 4978 → Arrest of Roman Protasevich – Following the outcome of the previous move discussion, I now propose renaming this article to "Arrest of Roman Protasevich", as per the "consistency" criterion. (See WP:CRITERIA #5, and also WP:TITLECON.) This event is more notable as a political incident, not as an airline flight. We have numerous articles that are titled "Arrest of...". See Arrest of Meng Wanzhou, Arrest of Matthew Hedges, and Arrest of Rozina Islam. More relevant to this matter, Arrest of Abdolmalek Rigi likewise concerns the arrest of a person passing over the arresting country's airspace on an international flight. The previous RM included numerous participants who cited WP:AVINAME to support keeping the current name. However, I note that AVINAME is merely an essay, not policy. Further, AVINAME explicitly refers to "Accidents", and as I explain below, this flight was not an "accident". Indeed, WP:NCEVENTS#Aviation (a guideline) itself states,
Aviation accidents and incidents should generally be titled according to the air carrier and flight number for commercial air transport related events. In aviation, the terms "accident" and "incident" are defined in the Convention on International Civil Aviation Annex 13, and these standards should be followed in naming aviation related events.
(Emphasis added.) As we state in Aviation accidents and incidents, citing Annex 13, an "accident" isan occurrence associated with the operation of an aircraft, which takes place from the time any person boards the aircraft with the intention of flight until all such persons have disembarked, and in which a) a person is fatally or seriously injured, b) the aircraft sustains significant damage or structural failure, or c) the aircraft goes missing or becomes completely inaccessible
. An "incident" isan occurrence, other than an accident, associated with the operation of an aircraft that affects or could affect the safety of operation.
This flight qualifies neither as an "accident" nor as an "incident". Nobody was injured or killed, and all were able to disembark from the aircraft (though two were forcibly disembarked). The aircraft was not damaged, and there was nothing "associated with the operation" of that aircraft that affected or could have affected its safe operation. For these reasons, WP:NCEVENTS#Aviation should be ignored, and the article should be renamed to "Arrest of Roman Protasevich" per WP:CRITERIA #5. Edge3 (talk) 04:07, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Voiced labialized-velar approximant → Voiced labial–velar approximant – [w], [ʍ] and [ɥ] appear under the proposed names on the IPA chart.† The articles about plosives were boldly moved from "stop" to "plosive" to make them in line with the IPA terminology last year (which I welcome and which was approved implicitly by others in this RM), yet the same user who moved the plosive articles reverted the proposed moves, saying "not coarticulated, but 2ary articulation". Although some instances of the sounds discussed may indeed be more accurately described as labialized velar/palatal than as co-articulated from a purely phonetic point of view, we do not know if this is true in all languages reported to have these sounds. When an underdocumented language is reported to have e.g. /w/ in its inventory and that's all we have to go by, there's no way to tell if it's better described as labialized velar or velarized labial, and if our article on [w] is named one way, we have no choice but to include that information either in no article about a phonetic sound or in the one named "labialized velar", which is misleading to readers at best and misrepresentative of the source at worst. Naming our articles using broader categories allows us to represent reliable sources more flexibly and thus more accurately. In fact that's what we already do in these articles about phonetic sounds. We might not know the exact specific phonetic configurations for each sound reported, but using the broad taxonomic categories employed by the IPA, we can stick to what's reported in our sources and provide finer language-specific details where available. This was also the motive for merging articles about "voiceless approximants", a category not all linguists accept, which made it impossible to classify some reports of sounds emphatically as either approximant or fricative. Moreover, the IPA defines the value of each letter not by specific physical attributes but by broad categories informed by the distinctive feature theory (IPA Handbook, pp. 37–8), and "[w] in one language might be revealed to be a velarized labial because it alternates with [b], yet be pronounced identically to [w] in another language that is revealed to be a labialized velar because it alternates with [g]" (Zsiga 2020: 122). † Except the IPA chart uses hyphens, not en dashes. The proposed names are consistent with the existing articles in Category:Labial–velar consonants etc. Also notice the inconsistency between the current names of the first article under discussion and the rest (hyphen vs. space). - (Discuss) – Ranked voting → Ranked choice voting – Requesting a swap of these and the redirect from ranked voting to ranked choice voting, with a note at the top that if the user was looking for instant runoff voting they should go there. FairVote's 2009 Form 990 discusses "instant runoff voting" beginning on page 43, as do prior Form 990 filings. On page 37 of their 2010 Form 990, they instead state "ranked choice voting (RCV, or 'instant runoff voting')" and continue with that name from there. The term "ranked choice voting" refers to all systems of ranked choice voting, as is currently indicated on the Wikipedia page. Public choice and social choice academic literature references the system as "instant runoff voting" or "alternative vote," and not as "ranked choice voting." These are uncontroversial supporting arguments. What is controversial is whether Wikipedia should list pages based on the current common usage in all cases. The change to "ranked choice voting" by FairVote has had visible and predictable effects: defining a generic concept as a specific thing, or a specific thing as a generic concept, is a common and powerful propaganda technique. The latter is visible in the United States with every political discussion of universal healthcare being referenced as "Medicare for all," while whenever a politician proposes a universal healthcare system that is not the specific policy called "Medicare for all" they are sharply criticized by advocates of M4A. Wikipedia correctly redirects Medicare for all to a subsection of single-payer healthcare, while in the United States it is now commonly used to mean universal healthcare. When discussing ranked choice voting with naive Americans—those who are aware of instant runoff, but not well-read and not greatly familiar with the "ranked choice voting" term—they immediately understand various systems, including Condorcet systems, and the differences between these and IRV. When discussing with those who are familiar with "ranked choice voting," comprehension is lacking in the extreme. This is not unexpected: it is a peripheral technical concept which most people have only heard of in a certain context, so redefining the basic concept of tabulating ranked ballots becomes mentally taxing. This is a topic several of us discussed while at the Public Choice Society annual member's meeting (I was surprised somebody else actually brought it up). It is not the purpose and mission of Wikipedia to cause this kind of distortion; and it is inoffensive to the purpose and mission of Wikipedia to correctly name those subjects which it discusses. Directing users away from ranked choice voting and to a specific form of ranked choice voting as if they are synonymous is damaging to the clear comprehension of a highly complex and not-well-known subject. I see two logical propositions here: * The propaganda argument is correct, and Wikipedia should not further a propaganda campaign; or * The propaganda argument is incorrect or irrelevant, and Wikipedia should ensure articles discuss the topic regardless, so ranked choice voting should discuss RCV and not be presented as meaning IRV In any case, ranked choice voting should not redirect to instant-runoff voting, but should list at the top that visitors may be looking for IRV instead. English sources commonly use the Korean name Agwan Pacheon, and some use Agwan Pacheon incident which seems the best (as it gives a bit of the context in the title). - (Discuss) – Lee Tae-min → Taemin – Taemin is referred to by only his first name in English speaking media. In Korean media, he's referred to as "Lee Taemin", "Taemin of Shinee" or "TAEMIN" (stylized) but this is irrelevant on English Wikipedia. Other Korean idol soloists also have their pages under their mononym, e.g. Sunmi, Taeyeon, Baekhyun. There are other people with the given name Taemin on English Wikipedia, but there are also several articles about people named Taeyeon and Sunmi and a Tae-min_(name) disambiguation page already exists. The page "Taemin" also currently redirects to "Lee Tae-min". 3a4t (talk) 11:21, 30 May 2021 (UTC) 11:21, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Template:R from related word → Template:R from related term – "Word" does not capture that this rcat applies also to related phrases, so "term" is a much better descriptor. The proposed move target currently redirects to Template:R from related topic, but "term" refers to a word or phrase, not necessarily a topic, and could serve as a better differentiation between the similar rcats ("topic" for words or phrases that could be separate articles, "term" for words or phrases unlikely to warrant separate treatment and are not alternative names). The previous requested move above was withdrawn due to fear of miscategorization of redirects, but many redirects are already improperly categorized as {{R from related topic}} which would be fixed by this move. In any case, the affected redirects have been boldly retargeted between the two several times over the years apparently without any issue. This move will improve categorization of redirects going forward. Mdewman6 (talk) 02:34, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Battle of Greece → German invasion of Greece – According to NGRAMS, "invasion of Greece" is a significantly more common way to refer to this event than "battle of Greece".[25] (see spike in 1941) and is not usually capitalized.[26] Although invasion of Greece redirects here, it probably shouldn't. Another possibility is invasion of Greece (1941), but German invasion of Greece is actually more common than "Battle of Greece" on ngrams[27]. Google Scholar searches also indicate that "invasion" is more common than "battle" when referring to this event and "German invasion of Greece" is commonly used. - (Discuss) – De-rhotacism → Rhotic speech errors – Last week's requested move was incorrect, "de-rhotacism" is not used in literature, only existing in one paper [28] and a handful of forum posts. "De-rhotacization" is occasionally used to refer to the speech impediment but is not the common name, being mainly used to refer to incidental /r/ changes in studies of dialects. There are two common names that exist for this subject: * "Rhotacism" (preferred by older sources, still widespread) [29][30][31][32] * "Rhotic speech errors" (or "Rhotic errors"). This source (page 9) explicitly says that "Rhotic speech errors" is the preferred term in modern speech pathology: "clients with rhotic speech errors (formerly termed rhotacism) – Rhotacism was a traditional term within speech pathology". More sources using this term [33][34][35][36][37][38] This page should either be moved to back to "Rhotacism" or to "Rhotic speech errors", per WP:COMMONNAME. – Thjarkur (talk) 18:47, 23 April 2021 (UTC) —Relisting. - (Discuss) – The Island (Ninjago season) → The Island (Ninjago miniseries) – This was originally believed to be a season despite being only 4 episodes in length. However, in recent days the lead writer for the show Bragi Schut commented that the subsequent season Seabound is numerically season 14, which clarified that The Island is not a numerical season in the show. This means that the current title is incorrect because it is not classed as a season. This change to the season numbering was applied to Ninjago (TV series) and List of Ninjago episodes with the source and has been generally accepted as the official status. Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl, Pokémon: Black & White, Pokémon: XY and Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon previously only weren't moved as these titles are ambiguous with the games they are named after. But since 2013, the Pokemon anime television series has been rebranded as "Pokemon the Series" (see the official Pokemon website anime section): * Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl (Pokémon season 10) is the first and titular season of the Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl * Pokémon the Series: Black and White (Pokémon season 14) is the first and titular season of the Pokémon the Series: Black and White (Pocket Monsters: Best Wishes! in Japan) * Pokémon the Series: XY (Pokémon season 17) is the first and titular season of the Pokémon the Series: XY * Pokémon the Series: Sun and Moon (Pokémon season 20) is the first and titular season of the Pokémon the Series: Sun and Moon Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl (Pokémon season 10; originally known as Pokemon: Diamond and Pearl) and Pokémon the Series: Black and White (Pokémon season 14; originally known as Pokemon: Black and White) were retroactively given the prefix "The Series" since the Pokémon anime rebranding to "Pokémon the Series" in 2013. - (Discuss) – TVA → TVA (disambiguation) – Acronym is most suitable for primary redirect of top viewed article with this acronym Tennessee Valley Authority, as the company logo and weblink involves it rather than the full name, and the company is synonymous with the acronym in history publications and pop culture such as the film 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' and in the country music scene including Alabama and the Drive-By Truckers.[1][2] Also see claims made by first move attempt supporter, and notice that the Tennessee Valley Authority is almost consistently the top article in views with this acronym, excluding Time Variance Authority, which appears to surpass the Tennessee Valley Authority due to its appearance in recent Marvel Cinematic Universe productions, which will probably see a temporary increase over the Tennessee Valley Authority article due to appearance in these movies, thus making any claim that the Time Variance Authority will be a possible counterargument in keeping the TVA page as the disambiguation page rather than the Tennessee Valley Authority primary redirect redundant.
Indeed, several pages erroneously link to this article when referencing other areas of the actual valley. Kehkou (talk) 12:36, 15 May 2021 (UTC)"The name seems too general to be about one specific region of the Rio Grande Valley. I understand many people in that specific region calls it by this name, but I have lived all up and down this river as far south as El Paso, and literally everyone, everywhere in the settlements along the river in the US call their stretch the "Rio Grande Valley". It is used by locals, companies, even in local news1234. But very few valley dwellers outside this specific region and adjacent ones, other than the AP, have ever thought it would refer to the region specified in this article. The namespace Rio Grande Valley would serve far more to the average reader if it links to, or better yet, replaces the disambiguation page instead, as it does indeed give the impression that this is the only place to use this name for the river valley when it isn't."
