spurious newlines
I believe I fixed the problem of this template generating spurious newlines by switching to HTML markup, which is less sensitive to whitespace issues. basically, multiple blank lines are translated into <p>...</p>
tags by the parser. Frietjes (talk) 22:01, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
Documentation example and question about spacing
The initial example might be better as a longer text sample without line breaks, so the overall typical look of the results is more apparent. For instance:
- Code
{{columns |col1 = Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. |col2 = But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and the glory of the climb. {{Citation | last = Churchill | first = Winston | title = Painting as a Pastime | magazine = Strand Magazine | date = Dec 1921/Jan 1922 | author-link = wikiquote:Winston Churchill}} }}
- Result
Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. |
But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and the glory of the climb. Churchill, Winston (Dec 1921/Jan 1922), "Painting as a Pastime", Strand Magazine{{citation}} : Check date values in: |date= (help) |
Also, based on this, if anyone can figure why adding the citation template makes the 2nd column not quite top align with the first (for me at least on IE9), I'd be interested to hear along with any known solutions. (I know that "get a better browser" is probably the best solution, but not an option in this case.) Lastly, it seems to me that the default intercolumn gap is too narrow. I know it can be overridden, but do others think the default looks about right to them? —Salton Finneger (talk) 15:10, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
- @Salton Finneger: interesting, if you check the source, something is inserting a
<p>...</p>
around the first part of col2. note that if I change this to
{{columns |col1 = Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. |col2 = But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and the glory of the climb.<p>{{Citation | last = Churchill | first = Winston | title = Painting as a Pastime | magazine = Strand Magazine | date = Dec 1921/Jan 1922 | author-link = wikiquote:Winston Churchill}} }}

- which removes the newline between the text and the citation, the problem seems to go away? Frietjes (talk) 18:07, 23 December 2013 (UTC)
- That does the trick. Thanks. —Salton Finneger (talk) 00:50, 24 December 2013 (UTC)
default colwidth=auto?
I suspect I'm missing something, but would a default colwidth of "auto" make more sense than the current fixed 15.0em? Sardanaphalus (talk) 15:11, 27 October 2014 (UTC)
- to change it, someone will need to check all the transclusions. Frietjes (talk) 19:13, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
- Someone; or some people – or maybe many people... if only there was some kind of community whose members would, when an undesirable result was noticed, amend it... Regards, Sardanaphalus (talk) 21:43, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
Headings do not work anymore
@Sardanaphalus: this change breaks these test cases where a header is added to one of the fields using wiki markup (the bug was reported on Portuguese Wikipedia, where a user uses this on his userspace). Helder 19:03, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
- Helder, fixed. FYI, this may be of interest. Frietjes (talk) 00:40, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
Is it necessary to use TemplateStyles?
This template uses HTML table to build columns. However the TemplateStyles page has some properties written for div elements, that's useless, so is it possible to remove the TemplateStyles page? -- Great Brightstar (talk) 07:59, 24 July 2020 (UTC)
