Editing direct quotations to use current pronouns
Hi! Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, but I tried editing a quote on this page to use Demi Lovato's current pronouns (in brackets), but it was quickly reverted with the reason "Don't modify a direct quote". I'm confused because I can't find anything saying you shouldn't edit direct quotations to use the current pronouns of the person mentioned, and I've seen it done on many pages before (such as this one). - "Quotations must be verifiably attributed, and the wording of the quoted text should be faithfully reproduced. This is referred to as the principle of minimal change. Where there is good reason to change the wording, bracket the changed text; for example, "Ocyrhoe told him his fate" might be quoted as "Ocyrhoe told [her father] his fate"." - In this case, where there has been a deliberate change on Demi's part, I would still say that the original wording of the quote should stand, but there may be reason to make clear that the quote preceded the change and is not a deliberate non-compliance. New users cannot directly create articles, and must use Articles for Creation. However, you should be aware that autobiographical articles are strongly discouraged per the autobiography policy. Wikipedia is not interested in what people want to say about themselves, but in what independent reliable sources with significant coverage choose on their own to say about them. Wikipedia is also not interested in helping your fans or enhancing search results for you. Wikipedia articles summarize what independent reliable sources say, showing how a person meets Wikipedia's special definition of a notable actor or actress. If it's from knowing her personally, or talking to her, or something like that, and you can't find it previously published anywhere else, it doesn't belong in the article. But if it is published somewhere, cite that place as a source, at least for now. Entry changes for Fritz Glatz, Austrian Race car driver

I am the personal friend and long-term mechanic of Fritz Glatz, see Wikipedia: the entries in the english section are wrong - and everytime I correct them a „Bbbb23“ reverts them back and threatens with „vandalism“. He has no clue: e.g. Fritz Glatz racing career started in 1965 in England, continued in 1966 for Kaimann Racing Vienna in Formula Vee and came to a stop in August 1966 after a severe accident at the Nurburgring. All can be read in his biografie in German. He restarted the careed at age 39 in F3 and later F2/ F3000 in 1980+, but cars and and entries are sometimes wrong and sources can be checked on Wikipedia; eg. his participation of 4 races in F3000 in 1985, not 2, as written (see Curacao F3000 Race on Oct. 13th, 1985. This writer Bbbb23 seems ignorant and wants to keep these false information in Wikipedia, and every time I correct it he changes it back - and has no clues and probably never met Fritz Glatz. Trying to archive some old talk page threads, I get "Error: The text you wanted to publish was blocked by the spam filter. This is probably caused by a link to a forbidden external site. Sister Project Boxes and MOS Conflict
Hi! The MOS Seems to contradict in an area and I could use some clarification.
MOS:SO states that Internal links to related English Wikipedia articles, with section heading "See also"; link templates for sister-project content also usually go at the top of this section when it is present (otherwise in the last section on the page).
This is in apparent contradiction to MOS:ELLAYOUT, which states that Links to Wikimedia sister projects and Spoken Wikipedia should generally appear in "External links", not under "See also". If the article has no "External links" section, then place sister links at the top of the last section in the article. Two exceptions: Wiktionary and Wikisource links may be linked inline (e.g. to an unusual word or the text of a document being discussed).

pages that are protected from creation

The Wikipedia article on the Inverse Warburg Effect was deleted after some controversy. After that, the message was: "This page is protected from creation, so only administrators can create it."
Is this still valid? If so, how can an administrator be contacted and provided with material to create a new article on this topic, incorporating recent research in several areas.

- Hasperasperagus Inverse Warburg effect is a redirect that leads to a section of Warburg effect (oncology). You seem to be referring to Inverse Warburg Effect. I would suggest you expand that existing section of article first. 331dot (talk) 19:21, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

- Tyrone Madera Now that's a good question. There is no WP:PLAQUE. I know there are articles that mentions for example Blue plaques, sometimes with an image, though I don't think they generally cite them per se. It may depend on which plaque and for what.
- One can argue that a plaque is "published". And perhaps, but not necessarily, put there by some sort of WP:RS/authority on the subject. I guess you could try to put plain text between ref tags,[1] perhaps with a link to an image if there is one. If someone objects, deal with it then. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:59, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

- Tyrone Madera By convention, we generally accept a picture as a reliable source for its subject. As User:Gråbergs Gråa Sång said the statements on the plaque were "published" when the plaque was placed in a public place. Take a picture of the plaque and put it on Commons (if old enough to be out of copyright) or on the English WP (if not). - Kevynknox You can make a request at Requested Articles, but there is an extremely large backlog there and few people to write articles, so your request may never be acted on, if at all. You may not be aware that a Wikipedia article about yourself is not necessarily a good thing. There are good reasons to not want one. You can't lock it to the text you might prefer, or prevent others from editing it. Any information about you, good or bad, can be in an article about you as long as it appears in an independent source and is not defamatory. Vandals can vandalize an article about you to say something grossly incorrect and while that is usually detected and removed(but can also be subtle enough to remain for awhile), it could still damage you personally.
- Your best bet if you still desire an article is to allow independent editors to take note of your career in independent reliable sources and choose to write about you. Forcing the issue can work, but is usually seen as promotional and viewed skeptically. Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources with significant coverage state about persons that meet Wikipedia's special definition of notability, not what people want to say about themselves. It's not enough to merely have accomplishments(even if impressive as yours are), others completely unaffiliated with you must write about you with in depth coverage beyone merely telling about those accomplishments. 331dot (talk) 21:03, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

The pilot came on the PA and advised us to look out the window, where we would see "the Isle of Man, in the English Channel." PROBLEM! The Isle of Man is NOT in the English Channel. Hi, I've been experimenting with Redwarn and Twinkle (sp.?) but I feel like I probably jumped into them a bit soon. If someone has two minutes, could you please have a quick look my edit history to see if I've been using them correctly? Probably the biggest hurdle I've faced is knowing when/what message to leave on people's talk page. Sometimes it can be difficult to tell whether someone is being a troll or is genuinely trying to help. Any feedback would be awesome so I can improve. How can I change my wikipedia language to Indian English
I am from India. I use wikipedia for various reasons anywhere from learning new things to using it for work. But I was frustrated that there is no Indian English option to choose from languages. Even in the languages, all the Indian languages are given except Indian English. Moreover, my main concern is that all the articles follow the international numbering system which is hard to understand for us Indians especially when we use the Indian numbering system as our numbering system. I also found out that the Indian numbering system is followed in all Indian languages. So it would be nice to have English(India) as a language with the Indian numbering system in it.
- Unfortunately, this would not be a simple or easy matter. The various language versions you see are not automatic translations from one "master" text, they are all part of different Wikipedias in those languages, and all these Wikipedias are completely independent projects, each with as much standing as this English Language Wikipedia we are conversing on.
- The non-English language Wikipedias' articles have either been been written "from scratch" in those languages, or sometimes began as direct translations from an article in a different language (not necessarily English), but these translations were done on an individual basis by one or more editors who chose to do so. Equally, some articles in the English Wikipedia began as translations from a previously existing article on another language Wikipedia. Note that Wikipedia does not endorse using automatic translation programmes, because they are simply not accurate enough.
- This means that two articles on the same subject in different languages are almost never direct equivalents, and even if one began as a translation from the other, they will steadily diverge as they are further improved in each of those languages. This also explains why different language Wikipedias have very different numbers of articles.
- There are, as you observe, different varieties of English, including British English, American English, Indian English, Australian English, and so on: however there is (as far as I know) only one English language Wikipedia. The general rule is to write a particular article in (and only in) the variety of English that is relevant to the subject, so that for example the article on George Washington should be written in American English and the one on George III in British English: where no particular English variety applies to the subject, one should stick with the variety used by the editor who first created the article: this is explained in more detail at WP:ENGVAR. Note that articles about subjects falling under the umbrella of The Commonwealth of Nations, including India, are intended to be written in the pan-national variety "Commonwealth English", which is close to British English.
- There may be some option for users logged into their Wikipedia account (which I don't have, so I don't know) to have numerals automatically rendered into a different system, or it may be possible for one to be created, but this is far outside of my own expertise. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.197.27.217 (talk) 08:48, 25 May 2021 (UTC)

- Per WP:s way of thinking, Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#National_varieties_of_English, "Indian English" does not qualify for a separate language WP, but is to be considered in India-related articles. Some articles, like List of highest-grossing Indian films use both numbering systems, but you will not see that in articles like, say List of Africans by net worth. Not sure if this is the right place to ask this - I am getting notifications for the last couple of days that user Zakari Brainbox mentioned me on xx talk page when in fact they had mentioned a completely different user (user Timtrent on both occasions on different talk pages) in the diff, I checked and they had not edited my name out so it seems some kind of bug in the notifications system? Find all of the reliable, independent sources for the information you wish to write, and cite those sources as you go. regarding a topic, which need massive edits
I am a doctorate and I have quality publications in my field (Scopus, ProQuest, EBSCO, ABDC Indexed). Today, I tried to edit an article of my field which is very poorly written on Wikipedia. I posted my blog's domain and Scopus and ABDC indexed publication in the citation. Someone rejected the changes. If someone is genuine, you don't allow them to correct the article. I have seen crappy references being quoted on the same post. Why didn't you rejected that? I am so disappointed, I can even share my publications. The topic is "Poverty Alleviation Programmes in India" I did research and wrote a thesis on this. It is poorly written here. Since my blog is new, it doesn't indicate my credibility. Get series of split tables to same size
I'm currently working on the List of career achievements by Yuzuru Hanyu and have a question regarding series of split tables, their size and accessibility:
According to the manual of style, column headers in the middle of tables should be avoided, if possible. So I split those tables into smaller ones (here is an old version of the page for comparison), but the new tables varied in size and it looked a bit odd, especially in the medal record, technical element and absolute best scores sections.
So I decided to put the series of split tables into a big one (nested tables) to get the tables to same width and place them at same height in the absolute best scores section. But now I read that this is not a good solution for screenreaders either. So my question is: what else can be done to fix the accessibility issue with these tables? Thank you very much! - @Azxluraa: You asked a very similar question three days ago (here). Nothing has realy changed since then. The folks over at RFA expect an extensive history showing experience in all or many areas of of admin work. One ability that is commonly questioned is perhaps the ability admins need the most - the ability to act calm when everyone around you is on an escalation trip. Even I would, right now, not consider myself siutable for an RFA today or in a month. I see that you have created a nomination statement as User:Azxluraa/sandbox. I still stand by my opinion that any nomination now is guranteed to fail. But when is the correct time for an RFA run? This question does not allow a universal response. I would say, the ideal time for you is not before three years have passed from this day, but it might be more, and it might be less. If you want to go absolutely sure, wait until a very experienced editor, an admin or a very experienced non-admin, asks you on User talk:Azxluraa if you want to be an admin.
- Finally, some words about adminship. Adminship on Wikipedia just means that you have a few extra buttons which would be irresponsible for everyone to have them. Adminship is less like the job of Albus Dumbledore, because admins don't settle content disputes, but more like the job of an Argus Filch, who tries to keep the castle clean. Admin can be an awfull job to take, because you will often find yourself cleaning up things left behind by vandals, PR outlets, and people trying to have it their way. Don't expect to get too much thanks for the admin job. And finally, self-nominations are discouraged on the english Wikipedia, because 99% of the self-nominators greatly overestimate their chances of getting through. I proposed Zygmunt Haas for deletion with a "prod". I hope I did it right. This maybe could have been an A7; there are two references to faculty lists; one reference to a paper that is described as an area of interest to the subject; and the rest of the refs are to papers written by the subject. Also, this article is an autobiography.
FYI, I have been hanging out here for a few months, making occasional edits for spelling. I am a computer programmer, and "behind the scenes" areas are interesting to me. - It's difficult to give a definitive answer to your question, but in my opinion the article is *definitely* not a candidate for CSD A7, since it does make an assertion of notability, mainly that he's chairman of an important department at a campus of a very large state university for starters. CSD A7 is more for like "Joe Smith is a nurse" or whatever, I think.
- Nor PROD, really. WP:PROD says it is for "uncontroversial" deletions, which pretty much means its unlikely that any reasonable person would object. But deleting this article wouldn't be uncontoversial. Heck, I might vote to keep it - probably not, after looking and not (right off) finding any good sources. But I mean a case could be made that he's a chair of an important department, wrote this and that, did this and that, that he's notable enough -- and that's not including if someone maybe comes up with an interview or article about him, or something. The criteria for deleting an article is not necessarily what sources are in the article but what sources might be added to the article. And one way to find those is to set a posse looking for them, which nominating the article for deletion via WP:AFD would do. The article quite probably won't pass AfD, but you never know, and "probably won't" isn't good enough to PROD an article. Surprises do come up sometimes. And it's a good article really, and it doesn't look to be hurting anything, so there's no super hurry to get rid of it. It deserves a full airing out and consideration at WP:AFD. - Yes, you are correct, non-independent sources could not contribute to notability. And indeed the person is most probably not notable by our standards. However, non-independent sources can contribute to establishing facts. So a faculty bio contributes zero to determining Wiki-notatbility, but still establishes the fact that he's head of the department and wrote all those articles etc., which some editors could say "Head of a major department at a UT campus should automatically be sufficient to support an article" or something. Not super likely, but you never know.
- So, if you did take the article to AfD, what could happen is: 1) since we are not rule-bound, the community could decide that, guideline or not, we should keep an article on the person, since there's clearly enough there to make an article, and/or 2) getting other eyes on the matter, we might find that there are sources we haven't found yet which do help establish notability.
- If the PROD expires, the article will be deleted, and that's not something I'm going to stop. However, why not remove the PROD and take the article AfD instead? This would e the proper move in my view and best follows the rule (others might disagree) and maybe educational. Your call though. Herostratus (talk) 07:23, 26 May 2021 (UTC)
- I am removing the PROD. Zygmunt Haas is a professor and the requirements for a Wikipedia article are given in Wikipedia:Notability (academics). The references are fine for an academic, though the article could be improved. He is the chairman of a department at a major university and an elected Fellow of the IEEE, which is one of the examples given for meeting the criteria. How to get the QID of any page in a template?
Hi, I've been trying to create some templates to generate information on article directly from wikidata. But the problem I'm currently facing is how to generate the wikidata entity id (or QID) directly from the name of the page. In the WikidataIB module, I have discovered the getQid function which returns the Qid of the page where i'll be using this function. But I'm looking for a function or template that will return the Qid of the page that's name will be provided as argument or parameter. For example: {{Get Qid|Wikipedia}}

I would like to request for an exception for the photo of "Miss K" on the front page of New York Times regarding the policy "Deletion of all fair use images of living people". Miss K is a volunteer nurse during the 2019 Hong Kong protests whose right eye was shot by the Hong Kong police. The teenage girl has been anonymous, a.k.a. Miss K by the media, and now disappeared for a political asylum by a unknown country as she has been wanted by the China/Hong Kong police. Therefore "their image can be captured by a Wikipedia photographer and released under a free license" doesn't apply to Miss K. I would like to update the said front page to Wikipedia but I don't want to violate the "Deletion of all fair use images of living people" policy. I noted that there were at least two exceptions for the policy: Osama bin Laden and Crash Test Dummies. I believe the situaion of Miss K is similar to bin Laden in 2007 (when the exception was granted to bin Laden) to a certain extent: People will not be able to take free license picture for Miss K as she will be hiding in the coming years. - That isn't a policy, but an essay. The actual policy is at WP:Non-free content, and in particular you need to make a convincing case that criteria 1 applies (I doubt you'll be able to make a convincing argument there). - Do you mean I need to upload the image first, waiting for someone to delete it, and then at that time I will argue at the deletion page regarding why point 1 of this guideline doesn't apply? And for why I would like to upload the image, that is because the page is the front page of New York Times who have millions of readers, so it is almost certainly that everyone who are keen on looking for Miss K already have that image in hand. If I upload the image to Wikipedia will only make the image additionally expose to those who are not looking for Miss K. The image serve an educational purpose in the article of Miss K's shooting case to illustrate the influence and social impact of the case. - btw, I noted from Wikipedia:Non-free_content#Images_2 that "For some retired or disbanded groups, or retired individuals whose notability rests in large part on their earlier visual appearance, a new picture may not serve the same purpose as an image taken during their career, in which case the use would be acceptable". In the future, Miss K is not likely to get her right eye shot by gunfire again, making an eye patch being a symbol in the social movement. Therefore new images are not likely to serve the same purpose as the frontpage of New York Times in 2019. - It's better to gather the fair use rationale before, rather than after, and you're probably in the right place to try and figure it out. You may have explained why the image is potentially non-replaceable (I'm not saying you have), but you haven't explained how it should be used (WP:NFC#8). Do we have an article about this person, or this image, or this shooting, where the image helps us fully understand the topic? Is there any discussion about this image in any article? If not, the correct order would be to write the text first, in the absence of any image. The only chance I think you could have of providing a rationale, is if the newspaper's front page forms part of an article. You should also ignore Wikipedia:Deletion of all fair use images of living people entirely, as it is not a guideline, and pay full attention to Wikipedia:Non-free_content. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:24, 26 May 2021 (UTC)

Many surname pages include lists of people represented elsewhere in disambiguation pages, as

which I have on occasion found useful, rather than hiding a lot of potentially useful information behind the name of the dab page, and have in some small measure promulgated the practise. - You can. It can also be deleted right away if it is inappropriate for Wikipedia. That happens a lot, and will lead to a lot of frustration if you think you have put in a lot of work on something and see it deleted quickly. Is there a syntax restriction regarding an External Link formatted as:

- Each link can only go to one destination by definition. wrapping multiple links is unsupported because it leads to Unspecified behavior when the user clicks on the link. - @Guy Macon: Looking at the parameters in {{Archive box}}, I found that setting either "banner=yes" or "auto=long" will change the formatting enough that it does not wrap in that way. Adding current time to entries for places
Many place entries include the location's time zone. I think it would be very helpful if these entries could also include the current time.
For example, the listing for Pakistan contains an attribute of Time Zone, which indicates " UTC+05:00 (PST) DST is not observed." However, this doesn't tell the visitor what time it currently is in Pakistan.
The current time is not standard information in that it needs to be dynamic. This can be accomplished using an API or javascript to calculate the current time.
How can I propose this change to the standard information displayed for places?

Intransigent new foreign editor DagneyGirl
I find myself in an edit war with a Belgian editor over place names. She insists that Belgian place names take priority over those found in my English language sources, and gives no source for her changes. She insists on destroying links in numerous articles I created tying the source place names to the modern place name. Several veteran editors, including myself, have used her User talk page to make good faith efforts to persuade her to follow the consensus to use English. Her behavior has been consistently defiant in stating her opinion is correct, although her language skills are lacking. I picked List of aerial victories of Gotthard Sachsenberg to serve as a test case. She has now made her third set of reverts to this article, though not in a 24 hour period. Her User talk page and the edit summaries in the Sachsenberg article tell the tale without my writing anything further.

- A I am not from Belgium and b Georgejdorner so called 'English language sources' claim is not holy true. The sources that Georgejdorner uses on pages like List of aerial victories of Gotthard Sachsenberg do not English names only, not even English from that time but uses names from documents, that can be English, French, German and Dutch names but also misspellings and phonetic spelling.
- Georgejdorner just introduce these spellings on the pages with results that that on one page you find that spelling and an another spelling for the same place. Mistakes in documents are not corrected because taking one on one from the source. For example the misspelling 'Nieuwscapelle' is introduced on Wikipedia from the main source that is used to fill this pages, theaerodrome.com. There's no need for that. Same goes for the German word 'Uberschwemm', Georgejdorner added there (flood), so Georgejdorner knows that is not a English word, but did not correct the term or use the actual meaning in this context, flooded land. So text means that the fight was taking place over flooded land. On List_of_aerial_victories_of_Walter_Göttsch Georgejdorner decided not to always copy the name from the source one on one, heaerodrome.com. But that resulted in a mistake, making one place two places, 'Schaep-Baillie' to 'between Schaep and Baillie'. The actual place name is Schaapbalie. On List of aerial victories of Paul Billik it was spelled as 'Schaep Baillie', as spelled on heaerodrome.com page of Billik. On List of aerial victories of Eduard Ritter von Dostler there is the spelling 'Oostroubeke' directly from theaerodrome.com dostler page and this the only place where this spelling is used, apart from a forum that uses this name. - User:Seb369777 No, there is nothing wrong with that page, it is a Category page, an index to existing pages, and you don't add things to it by editing it. You add things by going to the relevant article and adding the category at the foot of that page. Overwriting a redirect
I am thinking of starting an article on Sulgrave Manor. This is currently a redirect to a section of Sulgrave. The redirect has no Talkpage and doesn’t appear to have any useful history. Prevent False information from being added to the article created in 2017 by an unknow user
Hello, is there way to prevent users from vandalizing an article about someone with bad/false information? I edit the source, remove the fake info and it gets put back by the same user.
What are my options to stop that from happening?

Kyiv and Kiev
I'm bored with this title change but this user tried to move the page of Kiev Day and Night with title, Kyiv for 1, 2, 3 times. Eventually, I put a footnote describing any English sources use the title Kiev with citing Newsbeezer as an example. I'm literally going with English language sources, not enforcing script Kiev must be recognized as Ukraine's capital. This also occurred prior many times while I revert their edits. The only things of these people, they do not explain their reason for move in the edit summary. This needs more administrator attention with this article.
