Jesus Christ as a Co-Author
The end of Warren Jeffs § Jesus Christ Message to All Nations contains 3 citations, the first of which names Jesus Christ as a co-author. Is it standard practice in Wikipedia to cite a figure purported by the actual author to be imparting prophecy? If not, should Jesus Christ be removed from this citation? Question
Why can't non-sysop view delete contributions? Dr Salvus 12:43, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
- That is because deleted contributions are generally deleted by admins. The point of deleting them is to not have them be readable anymore. There are quite a lot of reasons why we delete contributions, and some reasons why we wouldn't even want them readable by admins. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 12:50, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
- Dr Salvus, the information page Wikipedia:Viewing deleted content suggests that allowing non-sysops to view deleted contributions would cause legal problems. TSventon (talk) 12:53, 11 April 2021 (UTC)

Incorrect Year Of Birth For American Singer Mariah Carey
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariah_Carey
This is, for whatever reason, a highly debated topic - the year of birth for Mariah Carey. Formerly, the Wikipedia page for Mariah Carey stated that the singer was born in either 1969 or 1970, and as of recent, has been changed to the incorrect year, 1969. Mariah is undoubtedly born in 1970 - this has been confirmed by her OWN MOTHER on the Oprah Winfrey Show, back in 1999.

- The citation in the note following the date of birth given in the article shows that her birth was announced in a local paper in 1969. It's improbable (to say the least) that such an announcement would appear a year in advance of her actual birth. Deor (talk) 16:12, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Please see the note 'a' next to the DoB in the first sentence for clarification. However the video does state at ~2.33 that she was born in 1970. But, as noted above the local paper would hardly have published an announcement a year before her birth. It could easily just be a 'slip of the tongue' by the mother. If you wish to discuss further, please do so at the article talk page. (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this:

.) Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 16:24, 11 April 2021 (UTC) - See Talk:Mariah Carey#New evidence for 1969 birth. Huntington had 200,000 people. The chance of another Mariah being born exactly 1 year before her to "Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Carey" is extremely small. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:41, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
- Also note that many celebrities are not completely honest about their ages, for various reasons. 331dot (talk) 17:21, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
- Indeed. Laura Branigan is a case where the date of birth reported by reliable sources was obviously false based on study of early newspaper clippings, school records and the like. A diligent fan worked for years to get reliable sources to correct the record, and eventually succeeded. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 21:13, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
- But Brannigan's dead. She's beyond caring what we publish. It's really different if the subject is still on the right side of the ground, as Mariah Carey is.
- Looks to me like there are sources giving one date, one the other. Unless the sources on one side are near useless, we don't have any business picking which one is the stone truth. Carey's mother is a poor source, but there are apparently other sources that agree with her.
- Morever, it is pretty clear that Carey doesn't want people to necessarily know her real birth date -- stuff like this Yahoo story sure as heck makes me believe that could be true -- and/or doesn't want them to think that it's 1969. She's alive and wriggling so that matters a whole lot.
- WP:BLP (at WP:DOB) says
Wikipedia includes full names and dates of birth that have been widely published by reliable sources, or by sources linked to the subject such that it may reasonably be inferred that the subject does not object to the details being made public.
- It doesn't say "widely and uncontestedly published by reliable sources" although you could certainly infer that that'd be assumed. If you're a strict constructionist and you kind of squint, you can parse the text to say that sources that indicate that the subject does object can just be ignored rather than taken as guidance, and as long as you only use sources that don't happen to also include the subject objecting. That's obviously perverting the intent, and most people wouldn't agree with you I think.
- But if you want to plow on and not admit you've already fouled out, you must at least agree that "widely published by reliable sources" is required. Alright, to prove that Carey was born in 1969 and no other year, we have five sources:
- A "birth announcement in Carey's hometown newspaper The Long-Islander [which] indicates 1969". That is not "widely published". How many people have read that. It's investigative work for us to have dug that up.
- The LA Times and Newsday both use math to back-figure a birthday from just the age, that's investigative journalism and we don't do that. That's right out. We don't do "Smith is 5'10" tall, as demonstrated by this photo of him standing next to Tom Hanks who is 6'0"" and like that.
- People Magazine is a good source, is widely read, and does straight up say she was born on March 27, 1969.[1]. So that's one. Whether one source is enough to fulfill "widely published", I don't know. It's reasonable to say so I guess. And of course there may be other good sources, but "may be" is not good enough for possibly fraught statements in a BLP; they have to be put in or the material removed.
- But if you want to plow on and not admit you've already fouled out, you must at least agree that "widely published by reliable sources" is required. Alright, to prove that Carey was born in 1969 and no other year, we have five sources:
- But don't forget that there are also apparently some sources on the 1970 side. I haven't vetted them.
- Bottom line: at best, you're skating on really really thin ice to give a single date as the stone fact. We shouldn't do it. OP is spot on and should not be blown off. Herostratus (talk) 04:08, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
- In a case like this, a local newspaper is an ideal source, because there's no credible case to be made for it being falsified 52 years ago. The People article is solid verification. Nobody's offered a reliable source for the later date. --Orange Mike | Talk 05:34, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

- Calling "investigative journalism" or sources with less quality those who have cited the 1969 year seems disputable when the apparently reason is because preferred year is 1970. Yes, Mariah, her fans or relatives have said she was born on 1970 and we have the impression she is herself aware that her age has been disputed. A user commented something like "1 year doesn't make a difference". For her analogy a decade of difference makes more sense (I mean a person born from 1970s instead 1960s). Like it or not, there is no way to overlook the fact of a birth announcement IMHO. Maybe those who are really convinced that she was born in 1970, can take a look of something calling Age fabrication when a person changes information on her/his vital records, a practice among some celebrities. --Apoxyomenus (talk) 15:43, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
Presumably Carey's birth was officially registered somewhere. In the UK, anyone can obtain a birth certificate for somebody else on application to a registrar's office and payment of a small fee. I don't know what the situation in the US is though. Mjroots (talk) 17:49, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
move page causes name conflict
I'd like to move a page, but the target title already exists as a redirect page. Essentially I want to swap the titles of the two pages. I figure I can do this by first moving the redirect page using a temporary title, but first want to see if there is a better way to do this. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Biggleston (talk • contribs) 16:57, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
- Biggleston The easiest thing to do would be to simply delete the redirect first, then move the article, then recreate a redirect at the original article title. As deleting requires an administrator, you may request the page move at requested moves. If you think the page move will be at all controversial, you should first establish a consensus for what you want to do. 331dot (talk) 17:24, 11 April 2021 (UTC)

How Can I add a photo to a Wikipedia page?PatARobinsonPhotos (talk) 18:39, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
- The answer is that anyone can upload pictures under the correct licencing. I think one's account must be a certain number of days old. However your username may well be against policy. And if you are a professional photographer you are likely to have a potential conflict of interest if you are using photos in any manner to promote your business. Please read WP:PAID and WP:COI Fiddle Faddle 18:52, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
- You can upload any file that you are able to completely release all rights to right now at Wikimedia Commons, using the same login credentials you use on Wikipedia. Commons is the worldwide image repository for all Wikimedia Foundation projects. However, they absolutely do not accept any works that are subject to copyright, those would still have to be uploaded directly to Wikipedia with an appropriate fair use rationale, which is a fairly involved process, hence why it is restricted to users who are confirmed. The idea is that you take a little time to learn the basics of the project before you start trying to license images for release here. However, there is also the files for upload process that allows you to request that another user assist you with it. All that being said I also have the exact same concerns about your username and possible conflict of interest. Beeblebrox (talk) 19:44, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

- @PatARobinsonPhotos: Here is a slightly different view. We welcome high-quality professional photographs. Thank you if you are willing to provide them. We rigorously comply with copyright law, which for modern photos means we need the copyright holder (almost always the photographer) to license the copyright to us. In keeping with our philosophy, the license must be CC-BY-SA or some less-restrictive license, all of which let anyone, not just us, use the photo, with attribution, for any purpose. Many professional photographers understandably will not provide such a license for their work. Some professionals choose to provide a lower-resolution image with the appropriate license. If you decide to proceed and you have additional questions, please come back here and we can help. -Arch dude (talk) 22:27, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

Create articles yourself vs
What is the difference between create articles yourself vs submitting work to Articles for creation? Thanks.Palisades1 (talk) 21:02, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
- A few things. Articles for Creation entries are in Draft and as such can be worked on until they are ready to be submitted and additionally help can be asked for in both improving the article *and* determining whether or not it should be created at all. (Certain people or things simply aren't notable enough for articles and no amount of improvement will help. A user needs to have a certain number of edits in order to create an article. And a new user creating an article from scratch that won't go through the article for Discussion to be deleted is extremely difficult.Naraht (talk) 21:06, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
- Palisades, if you create an article directly, you are saying "I am confident that I can make it good enough immediately to stay in main space". If you can, that's fine. If you can't, then there's a few different things that might happen. Another editor might see it, and go "That's not quite there, but it's an interesting topic, so I'll do a bit of work on it and bring up to the minimum standard to be retained". Another is that an editor will say "That looks like a worthwhile topic, but the article really isn't in the right league yet", and move it to Draft, where you (or anybody else) can continue developing it. Other possibilities, less welcome for you, are that an editor says "I don't think that meets our standard of notability" and takes it to articles for deletion: a discussion will ensue, but unless you (or somebody) can find the sources required to establish notability, it will get deleted. Another possibility, even less gratifying, is that an editor will say "I don't know whether the subject is notable, but this article is so promotional that it can't be rescued", and nominate it for speedy deletion. Now, editors may have those reactions to a draft you create, of course; but it will not get summarily deleted unless it is a copyright infringement or totally unsalvageable; and editors and reviewers will be more willing to work with you to get it up to scratch. --ColinFine (talk) 21:46, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

How to cite an image of a letter
I found a photo of a letter concerning the start date of principal photography from the series Degrassi Junior High, from the show's production company. The letter is a notification to residents in a particular area on how filming will commence. The problem is, while it's an official notice from a production company, it is just just a scanned image with no accessible text equivalent to link to. How do you cite something like this? Is a production letter suitable for citation? ToQ100gou (talk) 07:18, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
- ToQ100gou No, as Wikipedia summarizes what publicly available independent reliable sources state. A letter from the company is a primary source and is also not a publicly available source(since it was sent to and intended for residents only). Typically film productions are announced in a trade publication or the news in general. 331dot (talk) 07:22, 13 April 2021 (UTC)

- I went through the discussion, I am not sure if there has been a consensus regarding that. But what is that I can do now? Can I propose it for deletion and start a new discussion? I really feel, it does not clearly portray truth and verifiability. Any suggestions as what steps I can take Randomscholar1996 (talk) 14:23, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
- Randomscholar1996, there are three possible courses of action. Without reading all the previous discussions, I would put them in this order:
- 1. move on to another issue as this deletion has already been discussed and did not reach a conclusion
- 2. continue to discuss on talk pages
- 3. read the essay Wikipedia:Renominating for deletion and start another Wikipedia:Articles for deletion discussion. This may not succeed for the same reason as the previous nomination. TSventon (talk) 15:45, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Randomscholar1996. I'm a bit puzzled by your post. Putting aside that, as noted, the article your post regards is apparently "Eastern Protestant Christianity" and not "Protestant Eastern Churches" (though the phrase is mentioned in the article), you state as your rationale: that the concept/term is not used in the real world; and that you turned to Google to substantiate that; and that you spent hours doing so. Yet, the exact phrase (i.e., searched using quote marks around the title), returns multiple results (even limiting the search to just books results returns multiple hits).
Additionally, we often have articles on topics aggregating many instances of a definable thing, sometimes at merely descriptive titles ("French Gothic stained glass windows"; "Medieval stained glass in Sweden"), or even explicitly named as a list article ("List of churches named after Saint Joseph"), so long as doing so is not highly indiscriminate, or we can develop limiting criteria for inclusion, and the singular things or instances making up the descriptive or list title are verifiable. In other words, the existence of churches that are fairly characterized as both Eastern and Protestant might be a proper subject of an article, even if the amalgamated descriptive title was not itself used in the literature (which is not the case here). Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 17:16, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Fuhghettaboutit I do apologize for writing the wrong heading. I don't know if it's geographical differences, I am not getting any of those. The most near term search would be comparing Protestantism and Orthodoxy, or Missionary works of Protestant Churches in the East. However nothing in relation to Eastern Protestant Christianity as a community or categorization. I have checked the websites of Ecumenical Organizations such as the World Council of Churces, Christian Conference of Asia, Conference of European Churches etc, to see if such a classification exist. I could not find any.
- The point I made was in relation to the guidelines I saw in the Notablity page. It has been written that if a concept, term, person, idea is not used in the real world or does not have substantial evidence from second party and third party sources the article should not be included in Wikipedia. In the case of Eastern Protestant Christianity there is not even first hand sources of such an idea in existence. That is the reason I raised such a question in this forum . Thank you. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. Help in use of template for "death date and age"
Hi. I am trying to edit the article April 2021 United States Capitol car attack. Specifically, the section and the InfoBox about the police officer Billy Evans (here ---> April 2021 United States Capitol car attack#Victim). I am trying to insert his birth, death, and age. I am trying to use this template ---> {{death date and age|2021|04|02|1980|02|18|mf=yes}}. It just won't seem to work. Please help. And please let me know what exactly is the error I made. Many thanks! Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 15:32, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
- Source: [2]. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 15:37, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Joseph A. Spadaro: I don't see anything wrong with the death date. Although his birth date didn't show up because of a broken template (I've fixed it). Kleinpecan (talk) 15:43, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
- For future reference the issue here was that you forgot to include the name of the birth date template as the first parameter, so the software was looking for a template called "02" instead. 86.23.109.101 (talk) 16:21, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. I really don't have a good grasp on how the Wikipedia Templates work. When I made the edit, I typed in ... {{death date and age|2021|04|02|1980|02|18|mf=yes}}. What was I supposed to type in, to make the template work correctly? All I did was a "copy and paste" from the Original Template page (this ---> Template:Death date and age) ... and I simply changed the relevant dates. (I think? No?) Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 17:54, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Joseph A. Spadaro: That code is correct and you added it correctly at
|death_date=
in the infobox. The problem was in|birth_date=
. You wrote|birth_date={{02|18|1980}}
. The first part after{{
is the name of a template, not a parameter. Kleinpecan fixed it. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:11, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, all. I get it, now. Makes sense. Thanks for the explanations ... and for fixing the article page. Thanks! Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 23:47, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
Archiving a User Talk Page
I have been manually archiving my user talk page for years, but that is work that I now realize can be just as well done by certain bots that have the capability to archive user talk pages. Right now I am not asking anyone to set up archiving of my talk page, or to show me in detail how to archive my talk page, but I would like to know which bots are available and where the parameters to set the bot are documented. That is, I would like to control how long discussions stay on the talk page, as well as when an archive becomes full and is switched over to the next number. Robert McClenon (talk) 16:09, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
- Have a look at Help:Archiving a talk page#Automated archiving, which has a comparison of the two main archiving bots and some example configuration setups. 86.23.109.101 (talk) 16:18, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
- (e/c) Hey Robert. See Help:Archiving a talk page#Automated archiving, the current bots available are listed at the "Help:Archiving a talk page#Choosing a bot section. Just below that is detail on the parameters to use. As to the two parameter types you've identified you want control over, depending on which bot you choose, each has slightly different parameter names. Just using the code for lowercase sigmabot III as an example, it provides a 90-day default, so you would change
|algo=old(90d)
to whatever number of days you want the bot to hold off before archiving; for size, it provides a 75,000-byte threshold before opening a new archive, so you would change|maxarchivesize=75k
to whatever number of bytes you want. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 16:32, 13 April 2021 (UTC)- Thank you, User:Fuhghettaboutit. Robert McClenon (talk) 15:40, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

- Ian Stiell If you are referring to your sandbox, you have not actually submitted it for review. If you were to do so, however, it would be rejected quickly, as it is completely unsourced to independent reliable sources. Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources state about a person, showing how they meet Wikipedia's special definition of a notable person. Wikipedia is not a place to post your resume. Please read the autobiography policy. 331dot (talk) 17:55, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Ian Stiell: Photographs are tricky. Usually it's the photographer not the subject who holds copyright, even if it’s work for hire. One workaround is to use a timer or remote shutter release to photograph yourself. For the mechanics of adding references to your sandbox article, see Help:Referencing for beginners. (The instructions there focus on wikitext and the 2010 editing toolbar. With Visual Editor, the principles are the same but the interface is different.) Minnesota Vacation
It is with deep regret that our family unit of 3 generations will be unable to make it to Minnesota this year on vacation to show our children and grandchildren your beautiful state. None of us has ever been racist but with all the rioting and damaging of peoples stores and restaurants and people allowed to run rampant and civil unrest going on we fear for our safety since no one seems to get arrested for anything there. I went to school outside of Chicago and speaking with my siblings none of us ever remember our parents, family members or even our neighbors ever asking if the friend we were bringing home was black, brown, white, or any other color to join us for dinner or for stay overs and certainly not their social class. What was expected was to behave, respect each other and our property and to be honest, virtues which seem to elude so many of those in power there. We were taught to respect our elders and the police, to always be obedient and truthful. These are virtues we choose to pass onto our children, not all this that's happening there. Besides, why should we spend our hard earned money there and support your local businesses when you do nothing to protect them. So sad, we will all keep you in our prayers.
Now what happens to anyone when they get shot or hurt by anyone regardless of color, race, ethnicity or social background is beyond tragic for all parties involved. Justice should prevail and due process afforded to all involved. After all we live in the greatest country on earth, the United States of America. But listening to that mayor today inciting racism just made me cry. My children asked me why I was crying. I said listen, this is hatred being shown towards other people. Showing respect, gratitude and love, being honest about all sides of every situation will do more to fix any kind of divide in this country than anything else. What gives anyone the right to destroy someone else's property? What gives anyone the right to kill, mame or hurt anyone else? What gives this so called mayor the right to judge someone so harshly without a full investigation? I can only pray Mr. Mayor that if you do someone wrong that the injured party to which you have wronged will show more grace and forgiveness than you have.
Until you lay down all your hatred and begin to respect each other, other's property and respect each other you can all have all your hatred and violence. Please just stay in Minnesota and do that. We choose not have any part of it or experience it in person. We pray for all of you.

Sockpuppet query
Hello, another editor and I have been discussing a newbie who is acting like an experienced editor. The person has immediately created templates, entered various deletion discussions and shown familiarity with the site and its terminology. The problem we have is that we cannot with any certainty identify a master account, which SPI requires, although we do have one suspicion. What is the best way to go about getting a suspect newbie's credentials checked in such a case? Apologies if I'm come to the wrong place with this. Thanks. No Great Shaker (talk) 03:47, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
- In this case I would probbably wait, until either somebody else remembers who the master is, you remember who the master is, or perhaps the new account turns into a valuable contributor (I have heard rumors that there are persons who read a substantial amount of Wikipedia rules before they hit save for the first time) Victor Schmidt (talk) 05:40, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
- Okay, it might be as well to wait and see what develops. Thanks for the advice, Victor. No Great Shaker (talk) 05:57, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
- FWIW, I myself have been editing on Wikipedia for around 15 years without creating a User Account. If and when I do decide to create one, I will obviously appear to have more than "newbie" expertise. The editor in question may be someone like me (I can hardly be unique in my approach), so I suggest that you need a little more evidence of malfeasance before jumping to conclusions.
- To anticipate the likely question, my choice to remain accountless so far is based on a desire to avoid the psychological pressure I would feel under (because I'm weird) to be even more active when I should really be doing other things, and on the belief that edits should be assessed on their own merits without relying on an editor's reputation. (I adopted the "pseudo-sig" that follows purely to avoid confusion in conversations, after my formerly static home IP became dynamic due to an ISP takeover.) {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.219.35.136 (talk) 11:12, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

How can I add an historical photo?
I'm not very familiar with uploading images, could someone help me understand how to upload a historical photo of Rosario Sánchez Mora (the Dynamiter), the Republican heroine in the Spanish Civil War? There are several very interesting ones,[3][4] I think it would improve the graphics of the article.--Mhorg (talk) 10:19, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Mhorg:The Spanish Civil War was recent enough that those photos' copyrights may not have lapsed. You will need to go through the drudgery of figuring out the copyright status. This is exactly the sort of situation that infuriates me: the possible copyright is of no use to anyone, but copyright law forces us to do a lot of extra work. After that, you can upload by clicking the "upload file" link in the left-hand column on any Wikipedia page (like this one) and following the instructions. If the copyright has lapsed, upload to Commons. If not, then you can still upload one image of her to the English Wikipedia instead of Commons under our extremely restrictive interpretation of the "fair use" doctrine, which you will need to read. After you complete the upload process, you can then add the picture or pictures to the article. -Arch dude (talk) 15:01, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Arch dude: thanks for the your answer! I uploaded a few images years ago, but I still don't understand precisely how it works. I agree with you that these copyright constraints can be very counterproductive. I will try to do as you say, I'll make some attempts to understand the copyright status.--Mhorg (talk) 18:30, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
- I couldn’t agree more. 70 years PMA is not only infuriating, it’s excessive and counterproductive. 50 years from creation should be enough for anyone to get the benefit from their work. Patents are only 17 years. (Mhorg, you can also ask the folks at c:Commons:Village pump/Copyright. Thanks RR for the MCA link, I didn’t know that one.) — Pelagic ( messages ) – (08:43 Thu 15, AEDT) 21:43, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

In Battle of Loschniza the standard template:Campaignbox Napoleon's invasion of Russia is used. The article is displayed correctly on a notebook but not on a tablet or a mobile as the content of the "Campaignbox Napoleon's invasion of Russia" is simply not shown. The same is true for the content of the "Campainbox Napoleonic Wars" in French invasion of Russia. Is this a known problem? Are there any any solutions?Ruedi33a (talk) 11:36, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Ruedi33a: Navigation templates (navboxes) are deliberately omitted from the mobile version, also {{Napoleonic Wars}} at the bottom of Battle of Loschniza. {{Campaignbox}} uses Module:Navbox. The bottom of mobile pages have a "Desktop" link to see the desktop version which includes navboxes. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:09, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

Ekaterina1964 (talk) 09:49, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
- Ekaterina1964 To be frank, Wikipedia has no interest in furthering Professor Kiselev's professional activities or aiding his communication. Those might be side benefits of a Wikipedia article, but not our main purpose. Wikipedia is not concerned with if an article benefits its subject or not- and often it does not. There are good reasons to not want an article.
- Wikipedia does not have "personal pages". It has articles. Those articles summarize what independent reliable sources state about a person, showing how they meet the special Wikipedia definition of a notable person.(or more specifically in this case, a notable academic). Typically, such articles are created by independent editors, who take note of a subject in those reliable sources and choose on their own to write about it. Please review conflict of interest and paid editing. It certainly sounds like Professor Kiselev might merit an article, if the independent sources are there to summarize, but it isn't a good idea for you, him, or anyone associated with him to write it. 331dot (talk) 09:54, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

To whom it may concern,
Our chairman would like to open his own page on Wikipedia and we would like to know the process and requirements to do so.

- Hello! The chairman of your company would need to first state that he has a conflict of interest (COI). If he pays anyone to create the page, that editor must disclose their relationship. Furthermore, COI editing is highly discouraged on Wikipedia. It's better to let other outsider people write articles on a company; it shows that it is likely to be notable and worthy to be included in the encyclopedia. If your company do decide to go through with this, it will need to comply with editing restrictions placed on COI editors that help keep neutrality and integrity intact. Any articles relating to the company or personnel in the company will need to be created through the Articles for Creation process, and any edits to already-existing pages generally require the use of edit requests. Other volunteer editors will heavily scrutinize your writing; not out of bad faith! It's out of a desire to stick to the core pillars of Wikipedia, and a conflict of interest usually interferes with that, even in good faith. I hope this helps your chairman decide! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sennecaster (talk • contribs) 11:41, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
- To the original poster: please see the reply to the previous question on this page, much of which is pertinent to your question. Like the poster of that question, you are starting from the erroneous position that Wikipedia is a place for people to tell the world about themselves, and that a Wikipedia article in any way belongs to, or is for the benefit of, its subject. If Wikipedia has an article about your chairman (whoever writes it) he will not own it, he will not control its contents, and it will not necessarily say what he would like it to say. --ColinFine (talk) 16:36, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

- Eric's preferred version seem to me clearly better than the version preferred by the IP editor. Maproom (talk) 13:38, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
(Potentially?) wrong IPA link in Polish Phonology/Ortography pages...
Hi all! It's my first time here so I hope I'm not messing up, but I noticed that in both pages for Polish ortography and phonology, 's' in its usual value is linked to voiceless dental fricative, which sounds weird to me, as that sound shouldn't be in Polish at all and I'd have expected it to be a Voiceless alveolar sibilant instead.
I checked in the code for the page and it seems that the links are automatically generated, so I didn't want to touch anything... Could someone with a bit more knowledge in the field tell me more, and correct either me or the link?
Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stefano thf (talk • contribs) 12:52, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Stefano thf: This is too highly specialized for the general help desk, but the topic is apparently important enough that we have a page for it at Help:IPA/Polish. I suggest that you use that help page's talk page (Help talk:IPA/Polish) to discuss this. -Arch dude (talk) 14:30, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
Regarding expansion of article on Vikram Sarabhai
I wish to undertake a major expansion project of the the biography of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, who is widely regarded as the "Father of Indian Space Programme" (see:[5][6]).
- He was the founder of many research institutions, served as Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation and its predecessor INCOSPAR. He also received two of the highest civilian honours in India- Padma Vibhushan & Padma Bhushan. He also served as the Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission of India.
- But many of his accomplishments such as the one just mentioned, despite being widely reported on by the mainstream Indian media, the Government and its various institutions that bears his fingerprints, his Wikipedia article fails to give account of his accomplishments.
- He is rated as Mid Importance in "WikiProject Physics" and as High Importance in "WikiProject India" and "WikiProject Gujarat". However his article is rated just as Start-Class.
I wish to expand the article with appropriate citations for reference. However, I'm wary that I will not be able to complete the entire editing in a single sitting. I need a personal space to draft the changes to the article to make its contents more encyclopaedic but editing guidelines prohibits to edit an existing article in sandbox and copying it to the Mainspace article later. What should I do?
- Please ping me, when you reply.
Thank you. Cheers! CX Zoom (talk) 13:04, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
- Completing the entire editing in a single sitting, and copying an extensively edited article back from a personal sandbox to article space, both have the same serious disadvantage: if another editor dislikes one of the changes you've made, the may revert your entire edit. It's better (and easier) to make your edits piecemeal. You could consider discussing your proposed changes in the article's talk page first. Maproom (talk) 13:44, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
Hat collector reputation
I admit I was once a hat collector, but now I've changed my approach. If I fail my next permission request, would I risk my reputation as a "Hat collector" again? Dr Salvus 14:14, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
- I wouldn't worry about your reputation. I would worry about making productive edits in the forum/area that you want additional permissions in. There's a good chance someone in that forum will notice your work and offer the additional permission to you, or otherwise suggest that you seek the permission. Worrying too much about what your reputation is does not lead to productive editing, generally. ‡ Єl Cid of Valencia talk 15:09, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
Reporting and removing obvious spammer?
New guy here. Hi! I just got started with making some minor edits to pages Wikipedia is requesting help on and the 3rd page that comes up had some pretty gross and unfounded conspiracy theory statements in it. If it had a reference, maybe I'd leave it alone, but I looked up the contributor's history and he/she has been dropping this same statement on multiple pages throughout Wikipedia.
I'm very confused about the warning system reporting here, but this is obvious spam with intention of adding false information throughout the site. What is the best way to report said Wiki abuser? Is there also an easy way to remove all of their past edits since they are basically the same thing? Or would this require going to each page and manually editing?— Preceding unsigned comment added by TriviaCollector (talk • contribs) 15 April 2021 14:49 (UTC)
- This user has now been blocked and their edits all reverted. Thanks for alerting to this. One place if you spot vandalism is at the Administrator intervention against vandalism noticeboard where you can report this sort of thing. Thanks. Canterbury Tail talk 15:06, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
Collapsing and Hatting Comments in a Discussion
Are there any particular guidelines about which way to collapse non-constructive material in a noticeboard or on a talk page? My specific question is that I am aware of the ability to {{collapse}} the comment or to {{hat}} the comment. These two templates are almost the same. My understanding is that hat is a little harsher than collapse. Is there any particular guidance about when to use which of them? Robert McClenon (talk) 15:51, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
To be specific, this has to do with disputes at DRN. If I am the moderator of the dispute, I understand that the moderator is "in charge", but is responsible for using judgment. Are there guidelines for when I should use which of the two templates? Also, just out of curiosity, are there any more more templates for these purposes? how to link to a book from a footnote
Hello:
I am the main contributor to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bud_Powell, as I wrote his biography (www.BudPowellBio.com).
If I click on the mention of my book in any of the footnotes that I wrote, I am taken to Google Books.
Is there some way that clicking on my book title in the footnotes can take readers to my book page?
There didn't seem to be a way to get to my page from Google Books - so no one who lands there would know how to learn about my book.
Thanks in advance for any advice. Powell biographer (talk) 16:14, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
- Powell biographer, one thing you need to know is that a mention of a published source is not a promotional name-drop. It is solely for verification of the material in a Wikipedia article. Therefore, the Google Books ref is adequate, and a link to your website, publisher or Amazon is not called for. See Wikipedia is not for promotion.--Quisqualis (talk) 18:00, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
- More seriously, Powell biographer citing your own book is generally regarded as conflict of interest; referring to your own book in the text (as opposed to just citing it) is certainly so; and mentioning that it was released as an ebook in a certain year is naked promotion. Furthermore as far as I can see Wail: The Life of Bud Powell is a self-published source, and (to quote that section) "self-published material such as books ... are largely not acceptable as sources" which means that anything in the article based on that book is original research, and doesn't belong in Wikipedia. --ColinFine (talk) 21:21, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
Change the title of the Wikipedia Article
I am wondering if the article title Tuscaloosa County Schools can be changed to Tuscaloosa County School System as it is the correct name for the school system in Tuscaloosa County.
- Hello. Please see Wikipedia:Moving a page regarding.. well, moving a page. But, I did move the page to Tuscaloosa County School System, per your request, which I confirmed on the official website. Thank you ‡ Єl Cid of Valencia talk 17:37, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
Typo in image on Donington Park Circuit image, not sure how to get it edited
Hello, I am a very big noob to Wikipedia editing so my apologies.
On this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donington_Park the first image at the top right, of the circuit, says 'Starkey's Straigh' when it should read 'Starkey's Straight'. This is on the top right of the image, between corners 8 and 9.
Hope someone with the know-how is able to fix this! :)
