Proposed deletion |
On this page, the deletion or merging of templates and modules, except as noted below, is discussed. To propose the renaming of a template or templates, use Wikipedia:Requested moves.
How to use this page
What not to propose for discussion here
The majority of deletion and merger proposals concerning pages in the template namespace and module namespace should be listed on this page. However, there are a few exceptions:
- Stub templates
- Stub templates and categories should be listed at Categories for discussion, as these templates are merely containers for their categories, unless the stub template does not come with a category and is being nominated by itself.
- Userboxes
- Userboxes should be listed at Miscellany for deletion, regardless of the namespace in which they reside.
- Speedy deletion candidates
- If the template clearly satisfies a criterion for speedy deletion, tag it with a speedy deletion template. For example, if you wrote the template and request its deletion, tag it with {{Db-author}}.
- Policy or guideline templates
- Templates that are associated with particular Wikipedia policies or guidelines, such as the speedy deletion templates, cannot be listed at TfD separately. They should be discussed on the talk page of the relevant guideline.
- Template redirects
- List at Redirects for discussion.
Reasons to delete a template
- The template violates some part of the template namespace guidelines, and can't be altered to be in compliance.
- The template is redundant to a better-designed template (see also: WP:Infobox consolidation).
- The template is not used, either directly or by template substitution (the latter cannot be concluded from the absence of backlinks), and has no likelihood of being used.
- The template violates a policy such as Neutral point of view or Civility and it can't be fixed through normal editing.
Templates should not be nominated if the issue can be fixed by normal editing. Instead, you should edit the template to fix its problems. If the template is complex and you don't know how to fix it, WikiProject Templates may be able to help.
Templates for which none of these apply may be deleted by consensus here. If a template is being misused, consider clarifying its documentation to indicate the correct use, or informing those that misuse it, rather than nominating it for deletion. Initiate a discussion on the template talk page if the correct use itself is under debate.
Listing a template
To list a template for deletion or merging, follow this three-step process. Note that the "Template:" prefix should not be included anywhere when carrying out these steps (unless otherwise specified).
Step | Instructions |
---|---|
I: Tag the template. | Add one of the following codes to the top of the template page:
Note:
Multiple templates: If you are nominating multiple related templates, choose a meaningful title for the discussion (like "American films by decade templates"). Tag every template with Related categories: If including template-populated tracking categories in the Tfd nomination, add TemplateStyles pages: The above templates will not work on TemplateStyles pages. Instead, add a CSS comment to the top of the page:
|
II: List the template at Tfd. | Follow to edit today's Tfd log.
Add this text at the top, just below the
If the template has had previous Tfds, you can add Use an edit summary such as Multiple templates: If this is a deletion proposal involving multiple templates, use the following: {{subst:Tfd2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be deleted. ~~~~}} You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters If this is a merger proposal involving more than two templates, use the following: {{subst:Tfm2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|with=main template (optional)|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be merged. ~~~~}} You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters Related categories: If this is a deletion proposal involving a template and a category populated solely by templates, add this code after the {{subst:Catfd2|category name}} |
III: Notify users. | Please notify the creator of the template nominated (as well as the creator of the target template, if proposing a merger). It is helpful to also notify the main contributors of the template that you are nominating. To find them, look in the page history or talk page of the template. Then, add one of the following:
to the talk pages of the template creator (and the creator of the other template for a merger) and the talk pages of the main contributors. It is also helpful to make any interested WikiProjects aware of the discussion. To do that, make sure the template's talk page is tagged with the banners of any relevant WikiProjects; please consider notifying any of them that do not use Article alerts. Multiple templates: There is no template for notifying an editor about a multiple-template nomination: please write a personal message in these cases. |
Consider adding any templates you nominate for Tfd to your watchlist. This will help ensure that the Tfd tag is not removed.
After nominating: Notify interested projects and editors
While it is sufficient to list a template for discussion at TfD (see above), nominators and others sometimes want to attract more attention from and participation by informed editors. All such efforts must comply with Wikipedia's guideline against biased canvassing.
To encourage participation by less experienced editors, please avoid Wikipedia-specific abbreviations in the messages you leave about the discussion, link to any relevant policies or guidelines, and link to the TfD discussion page itself. If you are recommending that a template be speedily deleted, please give the criterion that it meets.
WikiProjects are groups of editors that are interested in a particular subject or type of editing. If the article is within the scope of one or more WikiProjects, they may welcome a brief, neutral note on their project's talk page(s) about the TfD. You can use {{Tfdnotice}}
for this.
Tagging the nominated template's talk page with a relevant Wikiproject's banner will result in the template being listed in that project's Article Alerts automatically, if they subscribe to the system. For instance, tagging a template with {{WikiProject Physics}} will list the discussion in Wikipedia:WikiProject Physics/Article alerts.
Notifying substantial contributors to the template
While not required, it is generally considered courteous to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the template and its talkpage that you are nominating for discussion. To find the creator and main contributors, look in the page history or talk page.
At this point, you've done all you need to do as nominator. Sometime after seven days have passed, someone else will either close the discussion or, where needed, "relist" it for another seven days of discussion. (That "someone" may not be you, the nominator.)
Once you have submitted a template here, no further action is necessary on your part. If the nomination is supported, helpful administrators and editors will log the result and ensure that the change is implemented to all affected pages.
Also, consider adding any templates you nominate to your watchlist. This will help ensure that your nomination tag is not mistakenly or deliberately removed.
Twinkle
Twinkle is a convenient tool that can perform many of the functions of notification automatically. Twinkle does not notify WikiProjects, although many of them have automatic alerts. It is helpful to notify any interested WikiProjects that don't receive alerts, but this has to be done manually.
Discussion
Anyone can join the discussion, but please understand the deletion policy and explain your reasoning.
People will sometimes also recommend subst or subst and delete and similar. This means the template text should be "merged" into the articles that use it. Depending on the content, the template page may then be deleted; if preserving the edit history for attribution is desirable, it may be history-merged with the target article or moved to mainspace and redirected.
Templates are rarely orphaned—that is, removed from pages that transclude them—before the discussion is closed. A list of open discussions eligible for closure can be found at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Old unclosed discussions.
Closing discussion
Administrators should read the closing instructions before closing a nomination. Note that WP:XFDCloser semi-automates this process and ensures all of the appropriate steps are taken.

Template:South Georgia Radio
- Template:South Georgia Radio ( · talk · history · links · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
This template was marked as deprecated 6 months ago, noting that this may be WP:OR. The template is currently unused. This is a strange way of handling an unwanted template. If it is indeed unwanted, it should be deleted. Gonnym (talk) 09:50, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

Template:AMG
- Template:AMG ( · talk · history · links · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
Unused template which from the /doc seems to have been meant to be used as one template for both films and games instead of the current 3. Since that didn't happen and the game website has been shutdown, this has no use. Gonnym (talk) 09:19, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

Template:Motorways and Trunk Roads in England
- Template:Motorways and Trunk Roads in England ( · talk · history · links · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
- Template:Motorways in the United Kingdom ( · talk · history · links · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
Propose merging Template:Motorways and Trunk Roads in England with Template:Motorways in the United Kingdom.
These look like they are closely related, so I wonder whether they could be merged. If not merged, {{Motorways and Trunk Roads in England}} should probably be renamed to {{Highways England}} as that seems to be the actual topic of the navbox (to add more confusion, the headline of the template is neither of those but rather "Strategic road network in England"). 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 16:29, 26 April 2021 (UTC)
- Delete Motorways and Trunk Roads in England. {{Motorways in the United Kingdom}} has existed for 15 years, covers motorways in the whole UK (not just England), an easy-to-grasp subject with easy-to-grasp subgroups. {{Motorways and Trunk Roads in England}} was created in 2018 and covers all roads in England (not UK) that are maintained by Highways England, grouped by Highways England's own internal management structure. This is a much less obvious subject matter (and subgrouping) which I would suggest is of little interest to most of our readers except for employees of Highways England. So I'd suggest deletion, but if deletion isn't agreed I'd oppose merger as the two templates cover very different subject matters, and rename it "Roads maintained by Highways England". -- Dr Greg talk 12:04, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
- Do nothing. The {{Motorways and Trunk Roads in England}} template describes trunk roads in England and who manages them like {{Motorways and Trunk Roads in Wales}} does for Wales. RichardHC, 2 May 2021, 20:27 BST

Template:Taxonbar databases
- Template:Taxonbar databases ( · talk · history · links · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
- Module:Taxonbar databases ( · talk · history · links · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
As per Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2021 April 24#Template:Authority control files. This one at least passes navbox criteron 2, as the articles do mention that they are some kind of database, and doesn't appear to be misused in situations where {{taxonbar}} was intended. However, several of the other concerns brought up in that TfD still apply, including fails of criteria 3 and 5 (brought up by me in the previous nomination) and being too self-referential (brought up by 86.23.109.101 in the previous TfD), and there is the new problem that many of the entries aren't even linked. * Pppery * it has begun... 17:25, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- Delete Since the databases included in taxonbars often relate to very different kinds of organism, there's no sensible "See also" use that covers them all, so far as I can see (why would the article at Plants of the World Online put the World Spider Catalog under "See also" or vice versa?). There are circumstances in which a more restricted set might make sense (e.g. a navigation template for plant-related taxonomic databases), but not the whole range available in taxonbars.
There is a case for templates that extract and display "configuration" information relating to modules and templates, but these are better in Wikipedia space, for use only in purely internal pages, such as template and module documentation (an example for which I am responsible is{{Wikipedia:Automated taxobox system/checked ranks}}
). So another possibility is to move the template to "WP:Taxonbar databases". Peter coxhead (talk) 09:05, 3 May 2021 (UTC)- I don't have any objection to this existing somewhere in Wikipedia namespace, but a list of all supported taxon identifiers is already available at Template:Taxonbar/doc#Taxon identifiers, so I'm not sure what this navbox would add to that. * Pppery * it has begun... 14:20, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

Template:Infobox union
- Template:Infobox union ( · talk · history · links · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
- Template:Infobox organization ( · talk · history · links · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
Propose merging Template:Infobox union with Template:Infobox organization.
I see no need for this separate union template, as unions are a form of organization and almost all of the parameters are present in the organization template. The organization template is also much more widely used (roughly 30,000 transclusions compared to roughly 2000). Finally, there are also some random issues with the union template which have not been addressed despite comments in the talk page as there seems to be low traffic and not many editors interested in its upkeep (for example, the blue colour at the top of the infobox, despite there being no real link between the colour blue and unions as far as I can tell.) Merging would therefore make maintenance simpler as well. Elshad (talk) 15:58, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- In principle, this sounds like a good idea. When you say that almost all of the parameters are present in the organization template, are there any which couldn't be mapped across? I think a couple are barely used, but it would be a shame to lose useful information. Warofdreams talk 22:51, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
- The two parameter that Infobox:organization doesn't seem to have are "members" (number of union members) and "head" (leading union of a union federation). Both are pretty important, but that problem could be solved by adding them to Infobox:organization.
- Apart from that, I think there is also the question of whether unions are a distinct enough entity that they should have their own template. There are, for example, separate infoboxes for bus companies, companies (much more widely used than organization), universities, fraternities and institutes. If those get their own infoboxes, then I'd say that unions should have one, too. Benefits for distinct infoboxes would obviously be a distinct appearance and fitting parameter names (for example, "Head union" instead of a more vague "Head organization".) - I was completely unaware of the fact that this had subpages other than Template:Url editcount/Wikipedia when I nominated this. Nevertheless, all of the other subtemplates are doubly unusable: the link is broken in the same way as the main template, and they are code specific to wikis other than the English Wikipedia and so should never have been here in the first place. This is a routine nomination of all pages in Category:Unnecessary taxonomy templates for deletion. This category is a temporary holding area for taxonomy templates whose deletion will be uncontroversial, because the template is both unused and unnecessary, e.g. because it is incorrectly set up, or relates to a taxon no longer used. Periodically, all templates in this category will be nominated for deletion. These are templates used by the Wikipedia:Automated taxobox system; they are never placed directly on articles. The templates nominated here have all been blanked and are no longer in use. For more details, see this talk page thread at Wikipedia talk:Automated taxobox system. Credit for this explanation goes to Jonesey95 and Plantdrew, as I drew it up by combing their comments from a prior nomination. Tamwin (talk) 21:22, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

Template:POV
- Template:POV ( · talk · history · links · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
- Template:Unbalanced ( · talk · history · links · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
Propose merging Template:POV with Template:Unbalanced.
I propsed this merge six months ago, as "These seem to be about the same issue."
; the closing summary was "...keep separate. The majority of opponents to the proposal feel that any shortcomings and "duplicity" [sic] between the two templates can be cleared up by expanding and/or clarifying the documentation to make it more clear when to use each template. If there are still concerns about usage following these updates/changes, there is no prejudice against re-nomination, but please give a few months for both the changes to be made and to potentially demonstrate that there has been an impact."
. Since then, the documentation of neither template has changed. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:03, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
- Comment. Not sure I have an opinion on the merits yet, but if they're merged the result should look like Template:POV. It's both clearer and better aesthetically. Tamwin (talk) 21:45, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose based on how I got here, editing Methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl. It would seem that POV would be the wrong template for this article. POV seems more "political" where "unbalanced" is not. Dennis Brown - 2¢ 11:19, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
"POV would be the wrong template"
So you prefer a template which, according to its own documentation, is for "when you have identified a serious issue of balance and the lack of a WP:Neutral point of view"? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:58, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose per Dennis Brown. Vacant0 (talk) 11:23, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose Sometimes topics in a given issue are mentioned more than others, per due weight, etc, creating an appearance of imbalance. This is not necessarily a POV issue. The idea of POV/neutrality v imbalance can be two different things entirely. e.g. If 'Congressman Smith' is noted for ten good deeds, and one bad deed, we don't ignore nine of the good deeds to create the appearance of "balance". -- Gwillhickers (talk) 17:39, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Gwillhickers Wouldn't the use of Template:Undue weight be more appropriate then? - || RuleTheWiki || (talk) 07:13, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose They're different. To me, unbalanced means what is presented is all accurate and fair, it's just that there's little information about the other side of things. POV is when the information is not balanced and/or fair, and is also clearly written to attack or excessively defend the topic/subject of the article. Uses x (talk • contribs) 20:41, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
- Comment. I think some commenters here are indicating that WP:UNDUE (undue weight of certain aspects/info) is the message sent by "This article may be unbalanced towards certain viewpoints.", but that wording sounds to me like NPOV, which is confusing. If we want the "unbalanced" template to say something about a violation of due weight, shouldn't it say use a word like "aspects" (the word used at WP:UNDUE)? — Goszei (talk) 04:35, 4 May 2021 (UTC)

- Hmmm .. seems to be one of mine. Give me a while to try to remember how templates work so I can see what it does/ what it did and if it can be fixed. I have a metamemory that I had no better response than @Michael_Bednarek when the interface first changed. OTOH, the German language version of this template, used in over 1000 pages, *IS* working.
- The website calling interface now requires an id number for the companies, singers, composers etc rather than a textual name. The good news is that deWP seems to have the numbers for their 1000+ links to, eg, Bayerische Staatsoper and Elīna Garanča. It should be straight-forward to rewrite the enWP (after all, the purpose of a template is to isolate the calling interface). I won't be able to look at this until mid-May, so if anyone else would like to volunteer to jump-in, please feel free! Scarabocchio (talk) 15:21, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
- You misunderstood the instructions at de:Vorlage:Operabase. By "Datenbank-ID" they mean the number in the URL for a singer, e.g. "1344" for Anna Netrebko, https://www.operabase.com/artists/anna-netrebko-1344/en, or "1496" for the Metropolitan Opera, https://www.operabase.com/companies/united-states/the-metropolitan-opera-1496/en. A query for a work's performances looks like https://www.operabase.com/productions/en?date_from=2010-01-01&date_to=2017-12-31&aggregation_query=&work_id=5399 for Tannhäuser from 2010 to 2017. I'm undecided whether we should keep the template until somebody (User:Rodomonte? who created the DE template) will fix it. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 02:06, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- It is not just a question of fixing the template. In DE I had to repair all the links manually, which took a lot of my time. Operabase has also changed their policy. Most of the content is not freely available anymore. Therefore you might consider dropping the template completely. --Rodomonte (talk) 07:41, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- OK, speaking as one who manually edited 500+ {{Almanacco}} calls, that sounds fairly nightmare-ish (and not a job I would like). I would only note that the page that I randomly accessed from deWP, Elīna Garanča, included a bio and photos, so rather richer than the site was before. There's no info on the source for the bio, but it is not enWP. Scarabocchio (talk) 08:08, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

- Template:Sockpuppet ( · talk · history · links · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
Propose merging Template:Blocked sockpuppet with Template:Sockpuppet.
Apparently, this template seems to be a copy of {{sockpuppet|''Example''|proven}}
, which provides the same sockpuppet template type. Also, this template can be ambiguous with {{sockpuppet|''Example''|blocked}}
, which provides as "suspected sockpuppet" and {{sockpuppet|''Example''|confirmed}}
, which provides as "confirmed by CheckUser as a sockpuppet". I propose to merge this template unless justification can be provided. Seventyfiveyears (talk) 21:04, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
- Although I don't necessarily see much issue with merging Template:blocked sockpuppet with Template:sockpuppet, blocked sockpuppet does by default mark a sockpuppet as "proven". The default behaviour of sockpuppet is to instead mark as suspected. If Blocked sockpuppet is to be merged, uses should be substed and then redirected as Sockpuppet already handles the behaviour if you provide two extra parameters to sockpuppet template. Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 22:56, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
- Comment: Current default behaviour of {{sockpuppet}} or {{sock}} is to mark as suspected but not blocked which has created a somewhat convoluted tagging issue – resolving it would likely some technical effort; the discussion here is probably relevant to this conversation. I think the socking templates could use a more general overhaul (complete deprecation of the "an editor thinks that this is a sock" version, retargeting of the defaults, potentially simplification of some of the parameters etc.). --Blablubbs|talk 12:09, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

Template:Biden presidency
- Template:Biden presidency ( · talk · history · links · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
- Template:Joe Biden ( · talk · history · links · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
Propose merging Template:Biden presidency with Template:Joe Biden. I don't think we need two templates where one could be enough. While Donald Trump had two templates, Template:Donald Trump and Template:Trump presidency, the case was different as the former was created about Trump's life before launching his 2016 presidential campaign and what ultimately what became his presidency. Since there is a lot of Wikipedia articles about Trump's presidency, it makes the latter worth having separate from the Donald Trump template. Every other president prior to Trump has one template that encompasses everything about them including their presidencies. Why have two templates when one can do the exact same thing with a section about the same topic? --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 01:10, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose for now. While this is not an unreasonable suggestion, I think we should wait a little, and then take up the issue later. Trump has increased the (already high) level of focus the president receives, as seen in the sheer volume of articles about him. A lot of this comes from him as a person, but we don't know yet how much of this increased focus will stick around in the long term. Trump brought us into a new era of how much coverage POTUS receives, and in my opinion we are still too early in Biden's presidency to know whether this is the new normal or we are going to return to the old normal. Assuming the latter, we would expect significantly fewer articles about the Biden presidency than the Trump presidency. If we're going into the new normal, I would oppose a merger of Biden's regular and presidential templates, because a single one would be too large. If we're returning to the old normal, then I would support a merger, but at the present time it isn't clear enough to me that we are going down that path. The pace of new article creation is lower for Biden so far than for Trump, but in my opinion still too high to suggest a return to the old normal. We should wait a few months and take up the issues of template merging when this dilemma has become clearer. - 188.182.13.127 (talk) 12:26, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
- I get your point, but many of those articles in the standalone Trump presidency template had a lot to do with then-new controversies which were always popping out every day of his presidency. I don't think there is any reason to suspect a similar thing with the Biden administration even though given how early it's been. It's the same issue I had with a now-deleted category called "Biden administration controversies". There wasn't reason in my mind to have it just in case a controversy were to happen, but rather if there was already a controversy, which there wasn't. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 17:19, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
- Support Pretty much every item on the Presidency navbox is also on the general Biden navbox, so I don't see the purpose of duplication. I came to this via 2021 Joe Biden speech to a joint session of Congress, and it just seems silly to have both there when one doesn't add anything. The main one can be organized with subdivisions of the presidency section. Reywas92Talk 02:03, 4 May 2021 (UTC)

Replaced with Module:Unicode convert. User:GKFXtalk 15:23, 10 April 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose I would rather these two get converted to wrappers for the module rather than be replaced by it. The module can definitely be hardcoded into
{{charmap}}
to take care of the vast majority of uses of these two templates, but they are still useful and intuitive to use in their current template form for those of us who document characters and encodings. VanIsaac, MPLL contWpWS 22:33, 10 April 2021 (UTC)- Personally, I object to the creation of template wrappers around modules. It makes the call stack longer and adds complexity to the codebase of whatever uses the wrapper, and the only benefit is slightly more familiar syntax. However, I recognise that this position is not policy, and if you want to replace these templates with wrappers around the Lua module they will probably survive TfD. User:GKFXtalk 13:19, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
- Okay, we're a week in and haven't gotten any more comments. I'm going to post this on WT:WikiProject Writing systems to see if we can't drag some more perspective in on this. VanIsaac, MPLL contWpWS 22:00, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- Template wrappers are preferred where the use of the module will be in mainspace. From what I can see, UTF-8 and -16 templates are not intended to be used in mainspace. If that is so, then delete. Otherwise, they should be reasonably be kept wrappers. --Izno (talk) 16:44, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Izno: is there a guideline or policy to that effect? It seems prima facia to be a reasonable principle, but I wonder if there are some subtleties that need to be taken into account. So if it isn't already codified somewhere, I would highly recommend that it go through the guideline process so that it can get a broad enough perspective to be formulated into good policy for these kinds of situations. VanIsaac, MPLL contWpWS 22:00, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- Don't think so, but I think that's just because it's not written down and not because that's not SOP. Generally, we prefer templates where casual editors will use them and module invocations in template-space only (in mainspace in exceptional circumstances such as having to deal with WP:PEIS). Keeps teaching/training easy for template use and teaching how to make modules easier (you don't have to deal with all the relevant frames if there's just the template frame passing information to the module). Izno (talk) 22:43, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- (edit conflict)Probably should be codified. I also believe this is a best practice. But there are cases where modules are used on a large scale in mainspace, Module:Chart and Module:Sports table being the ones that come to my mind. Posted at Wikipedia talk:Template namespace#Modules in namespace. --Trialpears (talk) 22:57, 18 April 2021 (UTC)

English is not an official language of Israel (nor is Israel an 'English-speaking country', even if many people there speak English as a second language), and therefore, WP:ENGVAR/MOS:TIES do not apply to Israeli-related articles. If some Israeli articles are written in American English, they can be tagged with that template. However, I'm not certain that this is actually the case, so that should be verified on a case-by-case basis. Either way, this template serves no purpose, as it does not even identify a specific 'Israeli' variety of English, and therefore should be deleted. RGloucester — ☎ 13:02, 22 April 2021 (UTC)

Template:People of the Sengoku period
- Template:People of the Sengoku period ( · talk · history · links · transclusions · logs · subpages · delete)
I'm not sure what to do with this. The so-called "Sengoku period" is usually (I'm going by the apparent consensus of Japanese encyclopedias listed on Kotobank) dated to between the Ōnin War to Oda Nobunaga's entry into Kyoto or his slightly later abolishment of the Ashikaga shogunate, although some historians definitely use the term to describe a period ending with either the Battle of Sekigahara or even the Siege of Osaka, some 30–45 years later. I haven't seen any comparable templates for the Asuka, Nara, Heian, Kamakura, Nanbokuchō, Muromachi, Azuchi–Momoyama, or Edo periods, all of which have relatively clear beginning and end points—it goes without saying that the same applies for "muddier" periods like "Fujiwara" and "cloistered rule", so it seems really weird that an unclear/informal period classification like Sengoku has such a template. There are hundreds if not thousands of Japanese people in the 150 or so years covered by the broader definition of "Sengoku" apparently used in this template (I haven't done an extensive check, but a disproportionately large number of the "Three major daimyōs" and "Foreign people in Japan" more properly belong to the Azuchi–Momoyama or even Edo periods) who arguably meet GNG, so if all of such people were listed in this template it would become completely unwieldy. Anyway, ultimately I'm not sure if the solution would be to (i) delete this template, (ii) rename it to "Template:People of the Azuchi–Momoyama period" and split portions of it into new "People of the Muromachi period" and "People of the Edo period" templates, or (iii) keep it as is, although I should note that both (ii) and (iii) theoretically necessitate the creation of similar templates for other periods of Japanese history; so I figured it best to put it to the community. Hijiri 88 (聖やや) 01:19, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
- Comment: Just because someone hasn't yet made templates for the other periods doesn't mean they won't be made. It would be a logical grouping, and allow easy access to others within the same time period. If the Sengoku period template becomes too large, it can be logically split. Perhaps "Royalty and nobility of the Sengoku Period", "Warriors of the Sengoku period", "Women of the Sengoku period", and so on. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 16:05, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Nihonjoe: The problem is that the only one we have at the moment is one that, should the others be created, would become partially or entirely redundant. At present for me a Google search for 戦国時代はいつからいつまで brings up an answer from Google that says 1467 to 1615, but this is apparently attributed to Wikipedia (interestingly, when I set Google to Japanese the link changes to one to Japanese Wikipedia but the dates are still those of English Wikipedia), but the first two non-wiki results both start with a statement that it is generally taken as being the 100 years between the Onin War and the abolition of the Ashikaga shogunate (or something). Admittedly, our Sengoku period article definitely needs to be rewritten to prioritize the consensus view, but that's a different matter. Hijiri 88 (聖やや) 07:22, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
- In that case, it can be deleted. At this time, though, I don't see a valid reason to delete, so Keep. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 16:06, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

- Category:Pages needing conversion to transclusion ( · talk · history · logs · subpages · delete)
This is a minor issue and how the page is structured behind the scenes does not matter for readers for who it is unnecessary and potentially confusing clutter. No new editor will make Labeled section transclusion their first project invalidating that argument. I would suggest either moving it to the talk page like {{Image requested}} and some other templates with improvement suggestions or possibly just deleting it. I'm more inclined towards the former, but both are fine and should be on the table (hence the TfD). --Trialpears (talk) 21:42, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
- Move to talk page. It's a valid tag, but per nom there's no need to present it to readers. {{u|Sdkb}} talk 21:56, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
- Move to talk page as many more cleanup tags should be, per Sdkb. Elli (talk | contribs) 12:17, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
- Delete template, moving message to talk page. I'm not sure there is added utility in having a dedicated template for this on talk pages. Editors should either do the transclusion, or propose it for discussion in an ordinary talk page section. Is transclusion considered too onerous for editors, and so we need a mechanism for them to flag it for more experienced editors? (If so, I'm more inclined to direct them to Tea House or similar technical request board.) Is someone likely to pay attention to Category:Pages needing conversion to transclusion? Since the usage of this template is so small, I can volunteer to delete the template transclusions and add talk page messages to affected pages. I propose an ideal talk page message for no specified section would look like this edit. Please ping me if you'd like me to do this task. Daask (talk) 12:48, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

- Daask's proposal looks like the best option. Frietjes (talk) 13:48, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
- I think there's potential use in having the template, even if it's just preloaded text to be placed in talk page messages. Transclusion is still a relatively young concept on Wikipedia, but its use has been growing, so there's potential for the tag to be applied more widely in the future. {{u|Sdkb}} talk 02:41, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
- As per Daask's proposal. We have a team of editors fixing old transclusions from a decade ago that have errors....last thing we need is this being done all over....best have experienced editors talk about this first.Moxy- 02:06, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
Completed discussions
If process guidelines are met, move templates to the appropriate subsection here to prepare to delete. Before deleting a template, ensure that it is not in use on any pages (other than talk pages where eliminating the link would change the meaning of a prior discussion), by checking Special:Whatlinkshere for '(transclusion)'. Consider placing {{Being deleted}} on the template page.
Tools
There are several tools that can help when implementing TfDs. Some of these are listed below.
- Template linking and transclusion check - Toolforge tool to see which pages are transcluded but not linked from/to a template
- WhatLinksHereSnippets.js - user script that allows for template use to be viewed from the Special:WhatLinksHere page
- AutoWikiBrowser – Semi-automatic editor that can replace or modify templates using regular expressions
- Bots – Robots editing automatically. All tasks have to be approved before operating. There are currently four bots with general approval to assist with implementing TfD outcomes:
- AnomieBOT - substituting templates via User:AnomieBOT/TFDTemplateSubster
- SporkBot - general TfD implementation run by Plastikspork
- PrimeBOT - general TfD implementation run by Primefac
- BsherrAWBBOT – general TfD implementation run by Bsherr

- ProcrastinatingReader Did you come to any conclusions with regards to this one? I was going around reinventing the wheel when I noticed Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 185. To me it seems like the issue is that we want to place autoconfirmed-show on the mw-indicator-pp-default div, but per the rule in MediaWiki:Group-autoconfirmed.css that will cause it t be displayed as a block instead of inline which may cause issues. I guess the solution then is to add another instruction to make it inline again but since the block declaration uses !important we got an issue. I'm not up to date with regards to the css priority rules to find the best way to handle this, but I guess I could find out if no one else here knows. --Trialpears (talk) 22:33, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

I imagine a mapping of these should be enough to handle the majority of templates, and rest can be done by hand. Would appreciate a hand filling in the blanks, and checking over the mappings made. - Pigsonthewing, thanks for that! Yes, it fills in most of my list. Some further params didn't match up, so I made some educated guesses. There's a number which need to be added to {{Infobox locomotive}} on that list (ignoring the train infobox for now). Perhaps it's faster to just add the most common ones, as I think a number aren't used. Some adjustments to existing params would help too (eg I've made a request at Template talk:Infobox locomotive for a change to cylindersize).
- Besides the ones that need to be added/adjusted, an immediate issue that pops up to me is that the page maps 'Brennstoff' to 'fueltype', but a number of pages use this param as if it were 'fuelcap' instead, e.g. DRG Class 05. Also, is "Wheel arrangement" necessarily always Whyte and never AAR?
- Also pinging Slambo, since you have more experience with this template (and can edit it), if you'd be willing to add/adjust those parameters to infobox locomotive? ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 19:31, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

I imagine a mapping of these should be enough to handle the majority of templates, and rest can be done by hand. Would appreciate a hand filling in the blanks, and checking over the mappings made. I've written some regex for AWB but my problem is that I don't know how (or even if it's possible) to set a whole row as a conditional check. Currently this fails if the template isn't written in this exact order. Any ideas? @Primefac: have any ideas?
Find: \{\{Infobox reality talent competition\n.*\|.*name.*=.*\n.*\|.*logo.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*logo_alt.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*first_aired.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*last_aired.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*judges.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*coaches.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*host.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*cohost.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*broadcaster.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*competitors.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*finalsvenue.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*num_tasks.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*image.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*caption.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*winner-name .*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*winner-origin.*=\s?(.*)\n\|winner-genre.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*winner-song.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*runner-name.*=\s?(.*)\n.*\|.*runner-image.*=\s?(.*)\n\}\}
Replace: {{Infobox television season\n| image = $1\n| image_alt = $2\n| module1 = {{Infobox reality competition season \n | host = $7\n | judges = $5\n | num_contestants = $10\n | winner = $15\n | runner_up = $19\n}}\n| network = $9\n| first_aired = $3\n| last_aired = $4\n}}
--Gonnym (talk) 21:27, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- Oof, that's a bit nuts. I'll try to dig into that regex soon, but I'm starting to think that using an AWB module to save, store, and modify those parameters to convert the template use might be the best way forward. The other thing we should probably do is find out where the template is used alongside {{infobox television}}, since we shouldn't convert it to "season" if that's there (instead, just folding it in). Primefac (talk) 22:10, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Gonnym and Primefac: maybe an oversimplification, but since {{Infobox reality talent competition}} is now converted into a full wrapper, can't we just subst it? (after cleaning it up for subst, ofc)? ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 15:28, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

- I know how to turn it into a subst-able wrapper, however I don't know how if it achieves the acceptable results here. Primefac has looked at specific cases above it seems, so he may be better placed than me to answer that part. But if it works, that makes achieving the merge easier than regex-hell. - @Gonnym and Favre1fan93: I've made a substable wrapper in the sandbox based on your wrapper. Go to any transclusion, plug a /sandbox on the end (or change to {{Infobox reality talent competition/sandbox}} if it's using a redirect) and preview. This should be how it looked pre-wrapper. Then chuck a subst: in front and preview, and this is how it'd look being substed. By my eye, testing on a couple of pages, this all looks correct, however the winner's national origin isn't being mapped in the wrapper (Gonnym?). @Gonnym: is there consensus to remove the various parameters removed in the current wrapper? See eg pages in Category:Pages using infobox reality talent competition with unknown parameters, for example The X Factor (British series 11) when previewed with the sandbox version (which will show the old template v before your wrapper convert). - @Primefac: Please note that the {{Friendly search suggestions}} (FSS) template has several search options that are not existent in the other templates that were discussed at the TfD. Consensus at the TfD discussion seems rather clear that "all" were to be merged into the Find sources template (e.g. the multitude of "Merge all, add {{Find sources}} into {{Talk header}}" !votes), after which, the Find sources template would be added to the Talk header template. The latter has already occurred, but the FSS template links are still nonexistent. A lot of thought and work went into the FSS template, so it sure would be a shame if those valuable search links got lost in the mix somewhere. North America1000 16:27, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
- While I slog through the slow process of replacing uses, you are more than welcome to merge the content per the discussion (it's not necessarily a one-editor show). If you don't do so by the time I finish the orphaning, I will do so before deletion. Primefac (talk) 18:18, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
- It seems relevant to link in a discussion NA1000 had with myself and Trialpears prior to the comment above, here. I'll repeat simply for the record that I'm not sure there was a consensus to add in a dozen more links, at least on the basis of that discussion. It was an undiscussed detail at the time, however, so I guess people can make up their own opinions on the matter. To not disclose that conversation above when repeating their interpretation of my own close, and then request someone else make the edit without disclosing the conversation to them, is probably forum shopping, however. ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 23:58, 22 April 2021 (UTC)
- User talk pages are not particularly "forums", as in Wikipedia namespace areas, they're user talk pages, and I went there to discuss why the Friendly search suggestions template was being prematurely removed from talk pages before any merge occurred. Bottom line is that consensus at the TfD discussion was to merge, not to selectively merge, and not for the closer to later come along and decide via WP:SUPERVOTE to then delay the merge per their own personal opinions, ignoring the consensus that occurred. Fact is, I feel that the closer should have refrained from closing the discussion entirely and !voted instead, since they now appear to be against the merge from actually occurring.
- At the talk page discussion linked above, ProcrastinatingReader stated
"If, instead, you're not asking for my interpretation on the close (as the closer) and are instead just asking for something to be done, then note that I'm not standing in your way. I haven't touched the merge for months and am not currently implementing it. So I guess you can ask Trialpears, or edit the template {{Find sources}} yourself if you wish. I'm not standing in your way, objecting to that change, or saying I'll be reverting it."
. How on earth could my post here then be considered as "forum shopping"? It certainly is not. It is commentary about a proper merge being performed. Simply put: WP:CONSENSUS was to merge, not to delay the merge. After the TfD discussion, users eagerly removed the {{Friendly search suggestions}} template from article Talk pages, and unfortunately, now only very rudimentary search options are available to those that perform research to improve articles. - Another matter is that the search options presently remaining are dumbed-down almost to the state of when the Find sources template was first created in 2007 (perm link). The merge should occur 1) per the consensus, and 2) because all of the innovation that went into improving search options over the course of years will go down the drain, in favor of the present dumbed-down version of the template. Moving backwards and providing inferior search options does not improve Wikipedia, it deteriorates it. North America1000 23:21, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- It's forum shopping (or asking the other parent, or whatever terminology you wish to use) because you asked the person doing the merge and got an answer, asked the closer and got an answer, presumably didn't like both answers, and then asked an admin giving your own interpretation again, without disclosing the interpretation of the closer and the person doing the merge. Of course, you're free to ask anyone else to look into it (or use your own advanced permissions and take responsibility for the edit yourself?), but you can't seriously say it's not forum shopping to go down a list of permission holders until one makes the edit unknowing of the history that wasn't disclosed to them. - 1.5 years later I've taken another look. The merger itself doesn't look toooo bad but I'm really not a fan of adding "Infobox Chinese" to tons of articles not related to China in the slightest. The 2019 RM didn't go too well though and it's perhaps best to try to at least partially take a look at the (imo not so relevant) things cited as issues in the RM. These are adding support for some other major languages which is currently partially or completely missing (Arabic, Hebrew, Urdu if I'm not mistaken, Greek and probably a few more). The ordering support is also somewhat lacking which would be a pain to fix if it wasn't a module. I'm not particularly trilled about taking it on but I'm not a fan of having this ancient merger around indefinitely either. Trappist the monk you seem like the obvious person to ask since you both developed the module and is the language guru, but it's completely understandable to not want to touch this. --Trialpears (talk) 23:18, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
- If I remember correctly, I wrote Module:Infobox multi-lingual name to consolidate multiple various templates (with all of their unique peculiarities) into a single source. Then I wrote a long long document describing the things that should be done to make the whole mess more sensible. Alas, I lost that document as the result of a catastrophic computer failure which was perhaps serendipitous because of the drama the would inevitably arise – you know how wikipedians hate hate hate change because oh my god the sky is falling. In retrospect, I came to realize that the better solution is to restart as a fresh design beginning with a whole new specification. If the fresh design is any good it can organically take over from existing infoboxen without drama. I have done nothing to advance that because, as you can see, it appears that wikipedians are more-or-less happy with the crap template that I wrote. And, it appears, that wikipedians couldn't give two hoots about merging the two infoboxen because nigh on four years since the tfds and here the merge lingers... Better to declare the merger dead and get on with life?
- —Trappist the monk (talk) 00:20, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
- Regarding the name - keep in mind we can create any number of useful redirects if adding "...Chinese" to something that isn't is a problem. That being said, if it gets built into a location-neutral module, it would make so much sense to rename the main template (wink wink). Primefac (talk) 13:14, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
- It's a mess right now but I think the problem isn't that people don't care but that there are very few people who feel confident enough with both the lua and the languages to take it on and the few who do either don't want to get involved in the drama side or are simply busy elsewhere. I think I may deal with it after I've finished the mergers I've started but then there won't be any huge improvements to the module but rather just what's required for the merger. No matter what a second RM is coming. --Trialpears (talk) 14:17, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
