Checking account number
I have a 10-digit checking account number, formatted like 0123-456789. Does anyone know if that works like a credit card number, i.e. is there a check digit, do the first 4 digits designate the bank, that sort of thing? Do all US checking account numbers have the same format, or anyway are they the same number of digits? I know there is a routing number separate from the account number, so I figure that is what designates the bank. So I'm wondering if the first 4 digits has any special significance. Or what I'm really wondering is: are banks free to generate and issue account numbers any way they please, with some reasonable constraints on the number length etc.? Thanks. 2601:648:8200:970:0:0:0:1A5F (talk) 20:34, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
- You could ask your bank. One possibility is that one part is a branch number. As to identifying the bank, see ABA routing transit number. --142.112.149.107 (talk) 23:39, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
- Bank account numbers do not have formatting rules like credit card numbers. Every bank has freedom to assign them however they choose. 97.82.165.112 (talk) 00:10, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
- But they must put in some checking. About the first four digits, years ago my bank was taken over by a different bank. They added "8500" to the beginning of all account numbers transferred over, so the first four digits may indicate the bank to some extent. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 00:43, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
- That could have been so that you didn't have a conflict in the database. When I set up checking for myself and my two kids, we got sequential numbers. That tells me that they are just incrementing each new account by 1. The first guy who showed up got 1. The next person got 2. The next person got 3, and so on. When banks merge, they have to ensure that you don't have two people with the same account number. An easy way is to add a number to the beginning of all the account numbers. Then 12300042 won't conflict with the already existing account number 42. 97.82.165.112 (talk) 14:16, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks all. Anyone know if there would be any technical obstacles (customer acceptance is a different story) to a bank using 16 digit account numbers, like credit card numbers? By obstacles I mean limitations in the national or worldwide check processing networks. 2601:648:8200:970:0:0:0:1A5F (talk) 07:08, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
- There is an international standard for that. It's called IBAN. This originated as a European standard, but has been adopted by several non-EU countries too. PiusImpavidus (talk) 09:17, 8 March 2021 (UTC)

Excel
I am not sure how to ask this question but this is related to Microsoft Excel. I have data in two columns ( column 1 and column 2). One column has heading as Gender and has values in form of male and female, for example I have total 70 entries and out of which 40 are female and 30 are male. Another column has values in numbers, for example 5, 6,3, 4 etc. What I want to do is that I want to subtract values given in the second column but the value subtracted depends if the cell belongs to a male or a female. If it belongs to female, I want to subtract 2 but if belongs to male I want to subtract 3 from the second column. How this operation can be performed? Can someone explain please? Thanks a lot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 116.71.6.118 (talk) 16:26, 10 March 2021 (UTC)
- Note that Excel labels columns with letters, not numbers.
- You can use a formula to do that. If your "column 1" is A and your "column 2" is B, and supposing that it is in row 1, enter (in the cell that the result should go in)
=A1-IF(B1="Male", 3, 2)
. (If the location is different, replace the A, B, or 1s as appropriate; you can alternatively click on the data cells to fill in the references.) - For information about how this works: [1], [2]
- After doing the first one, you can select the cell, then click and hold on the little square in its bottom-right, and drag down, to duplicate the formula to the rest of the cells below with the necessary adjustments.

JSON error downloading Word attachments from Yahoo mail
Hey all. I am experiencing an error I've never had before, from something I do all the time. My Google searches to identify the issue failed. I am getting the following error when attempting to download either of two Word documents from my Yahoo email account, emailed to me from my work colleague (or to download them together as a zip file):
- With JSON invoked (in blue), next to "Raw Data" and "Headers", I get:
error code "EC-4008" requestId "<removed>"
(I'm not really sure what the requestID is, but I have removed it above over privacy concerns.) As some context, I had my colleague switch from one email provider to a Gmail account and re-send the same files, and I am getting the same error message. I receive Word documents emailed from this colleague all the time, who attaches them from the same computer as the one used for this email to me. I am on an iMac. Any ideas? --Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 18:41, 10 March 2021 (UTC)
- Try getting your colleague to either make a very minor modification to the files, or to ZIP them themselves. It's possible that Yahoo only keeps one copy of each file it detects as unique (via some hash and filesize) and somehow their internal copy has problems so resending it doesn't help. If you can't do that for some reason, you could try using IMAP or maybe the mobile app to retrieve the attachment. It's possible the problem is only on their web client. If even that fails, it's possible that Yahoo is detecting the files as dangerous but for some reason isn't displaying a proper error message, or otherwise trying to process them and failing. Unfortunately in that case your options are limited. You could try sending it as a encrypted archive, but many emails services block this on either the sending or receiving end or both. You need to encrypt the file in some way that is has no recognisable header, and also ensure it has no extension that will be considered a problem. Alternatively you'll need some other way to send it. Nil Einne (talk) 22:54, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

a few questions regarding using Twitter
I'm reloading the following questions, after raising them yesterday in the 'reference desk', wrongly.
- It seems that there's no way to contact Twitter for any sort of direct appeal or questions, eventhough, sometimes, it's very necessary, and even expected. Is it so ? There must be a way, afterall !
- E.g., I want to change my username from a current, say, @aaaaaaaa to another, chosen by myself - how can this be done ?
- Suppose I wish to make a personal contact with someone there - how can this be done ? Unlike Facebook, and, of course, Wikipedia, there's no way to make a personal contact directly (email address or otherwise), or am I wrong ?
- Is it possible to be followed by a 'hidden' follower ? I ask that because, since tomorrow, the counter gives a count which is higher than the actual number of followers (which can visually be seen).
- How can I set a button of 'tweet to aaaaa', just under 'photos & videos' (and other possible tools) ? בנצי (talk) 08:28, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

AI which can turn sketches into either 3d models or realistic images
I've heard about artifical intelligences which are capable of turning either sketches into realistic images or 3d models. Does someone know such programs?--85.4.148.47 (talk) 01:55, 12 March 2021 (UTC)
p value in Excel
Hi everyone.. I want to ask a question related to Microsoft Excel. How is it possible to calculate p-value in Excel using data in two columns where many of cells do not contain any data ( i.e. values undetermined )?? Thanks in advance — Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.228.157.92 (talk) 11:27, 12 March 2021 (UTC)

How can I post a screenshot on this present page?
How can I post a screenshot on this reference desk page? Michael Hardy (talk) 18:31, 13 March 2021 (UTC)
- If you can publish the screenshot on some image publication site, you can do so and include a link to the image. If you want the image to actually show up on the reference desk instead of being a click away, you have to upload it to Wikipedia as an image. JIP | Talk 02:35, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
