While Wikipedia's written policies and guidelines should be taken seriously, they can be misused.
Do not follow an overly strict interpretation of the letter of policy without consideration for the principles of policies.
If the rules truly prevent you from improving the encyclopedia, ignore them.
Disagreements are resolved through consensus-based discussion, not by tightly sticking to rules and procedures.
Furthermore, policies and guidelines themselves may be changed to reflect evolving consensus. (WP:NOT)

Welcome to the 2019 WikiCup!
Hello and Happy New Year!
Welcome to the 2019 WikiCup, the competition begins today. If you have already joined, your submission page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and we will set up your submissions page. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work during 2019, and which you have nominated this year, is eligible for points in the competition, the judges will be checking! Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! The judges for the WikiCup are Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email), Godot13 (talk · contribs · email), Vanamonde93 (talk · contribs · email) and Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email). - There are a number of new or changed speedy deletion criteria, each previously part of WP:CSD#G6:
- G14 (new): Disambiguation pages that disambiguate only zero or one existing pages are now covered under the new G14 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-disambig}}; the text is unchanged and candidates may be found in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as unnecessary disambiguation pages.
- R4 (new): Redirects in the file namespace (and no file links) that have the same name as a file or redirect at Commons are now covered under the new R4 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-redircom}}; the text is unchanged.
- G13 (expanded): Userspace drafts containing only the default Article Wizard text are now covered under G13 along with other drafts (discussion). Such blank drafts are now eligible after six months rather than one year, and taggers continue to use {{db-blankdraft}}.
- The Wikimedia Foundation now requires all interface administrators to enable two-factor authentication.
- Members of the Bot Approvals Group (BAG) are now subject to an activity requirement. After two years without any bot-related activity (e.g. operating a bot, posting on a bot-related talk page), BAG members will be retired from BAG following a one-week notice.
- Starting on December 13, the Wikimedia Foundation security team implemented new password policy and requirements. Privileged accounts (administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, interface administrators, bots, edit filter managers/helpers, template editors, et al.) must have a password at least 10 characters in length. All accounts must have a password:
- At least 8 characters in length
- Not in the 100,000 most popular passwords (defined by the Password Blacklist library)
- Different from their username
- User accounts not meeting these requirements will be prompted to update their password accordingly. More information is available on MediaWiki.org.
- Blocked administrators may now block the administrator that blocked them. This was done to mitigate the possibility that a compromised administrator account would block all other active administrators, complementing the removal of the ability to unblock oneself outside of self-imposed blocks. A request for comment is currently in progress to determine whether the blocking policy should be updated regarding this change.
- {{Copyvio-revdel}} now has a link to open the history with the RevDel checkboxes already filled in.
- Following the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: AGK, Courcelles, GorillaWarfare, Joe Roe, Mkdw, SilkTork.
- Accounts continue to be compromised on a regular basis. Evidence shows this is entirely due to the accounts having the same password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately.
- Around 22% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 20% in June 2018. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless of whether you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

C1
Hi Liz
Seven hours after I created Category:Iranian expatriate sportspeople by country of residence as part of a series, you tagged it[1] as WP:C1.
It will be populated today, and then the tag will need to be removed.
Is such prompt tagging really a good use of anyone's time? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 15:18, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
- Well, I work off of the Database Report for Empty Categories, BrownHairedGirl, and so far the main problems that have arisen have been with 2019 categories that have not been populated yet. I'll remove the misplaced tag from yesterday. My apologies. Liz Read! Talk! 20:12, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
- Liz
- The database report is a good place to start. However, I suggest not tagging cats which are less than a day or two old. Plenty of editors create cats in batches, and then populate them later.
- Also, if the newly-created 2019 cats are part of an established series, then they will usually be populated soon. So again, no point in tagging them. -BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 00:14, 3 January 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you, BrownHairedGirl, I appreciate your advice. When I came back to edit WP in October, I might have done so with too much enthusiasm. That can happen when I find a task that is backlogged (there were over 1200 listed empty categories). It's all caught up now but I'll keep your advice in mind. Liz Read! Talk! 02:47, 3 January 2019 (UTC)
- Ah. I totally understand. Clearing big backlogs requires fast work, making snap decisions.
- When I started work on Special:WantedCategories, it had a backlog of (IIRC) about 30,000. The only way to do it was a blitz: work v fast, with a team of us at it. It took a few months ... and once it was all done, we could relax and scrutinise a bit more and leave nicer notes for editors etc. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 02:51, 3 January 2019 (UTC)

PAVA cloud CSD rejection
Hey, I saw that you rejected the speedy deletion request that I posted to PAVA cloud on the grounds that we should consider the merge first. However, the merge was proposed by me, and completed by me already, so I really don't think there's anything left to do with the merge. That having been said, I see that one of the sources uses "PavaCloud™" in its marketing, so I'm going to change the article to a redirect instead of refiling for deletion, as that seems reasonably appropriate. signed, Rosguill talk 18:08, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

Welcome message Suggestion
Hey, thank you for welcoming me to Wikipedia. Just an FYI, you may to check talk pages before you post your welcome message at the top in case the user has put something there already. Wallyfromdilbert (talk) 00:14, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
- I don't see another welcome note unless you have removed one from your talk page. I use Twinkle (an editing tool) and Twinkle always puts welcome notices at the very top of the user talk page. I just noticed that you only registered your account a week ago and hadn't been welcomed yet. If the note irritates you, please delete it, Wallyfromdilbert. Editors can remove everything but block notices & deletion tags from their own talk page. Liz Read! Talk! 00:30, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
- I had a link with the text "Click here to start a new topic" at the top of my talk page that I had put there shortly after creating my account. I have already moved it back to the top of my talk page above your welcome message, and I am aware that I can delete it from my own talk page. Also, the default setting in Twinkle is to place welcome messages below other content already on someone's talk page. You must have changed the default setting. Hence why I said you may want to look at the talk pages before you post so that you do not move down messages placed by the user themselves. If they have something already placed at the top of their own talk page and you want to post a welcome message, then change back to the default settings in Twinkle before posting. - Just because I'm a new editor doesn't mean that I don't try to read on the policies before I do things, even if I make mistakes in some of my edits. Going through my preferences and looking at the settings is pretty basic, and I'm not quite sure why an experienced user would try to be misleading about how Twinkle works. Way to assume good faith about me though with your statement. I know that's big here especially considering you have it in your banner when others edit your talk page. Maybe you should try it yourself. Wallyfromdilbert (talk) 04:06, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
- You know, Wally, I took a minute from my editing to simply posted a Welcome message to what I thought was a new editor. And you are making a big deal over what was meant as a simple friendly gesture from one editor to another. Now, I regret even extending you a hand of friendship. I won't respond any further and if you have any problems, you can take them to another administrator. I will revert or delete any further messages you post here and I've never said that to another editor before in my 5 years editing on Wikipedia. Good bye and good luck with your editing. So long. Categories...
Yes, I'd removed the {{empty category}} on those, because they aren't likely to be filled in a useful fashion now that the templates that filled them were actively removed. IIRC I placed the {{empty category}} on them, originally, when it was a possibility they could be filled. That is no longer the case.ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 15:24, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation, ShakespeareFan00. This whole EmptyCat issue is one I've been thinking about because the tag is being used on over 20,000 category pages, many more than is warranted. I'm hoping to post at the Village Pump soon to get some ideas on ways to be sure the tag is being utilized correctly and when necessary. I'm reluctant to remove the tag because I've run into disagreement about it even though many of those same empty categories are still empty and are likely to remain so. An editor puts a tracking or maintenance tag and an empty cat tag on a category and it is if the decision is written in stone. I think many of these categories need to be reviewed. Liz Read! Yarkon Bridge Trio
Hello, I am (as a fairly new editor) trying to expand articles relating to Israeli Music. I seen that the Yarkon Bridge Trio was previously deleted by you (to be clear: I didn't edited the deleted article and I don't know what was in the content). Is it OK with you if I'd have another go in writing this article, trying to make it as detailed as possible?--Daffidovic (talk) 08:03, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
- Of course, Daffidovic, go for it. Yarkon Bridge Trio was deleted because of A1: Very short article lacking sufficient context to identify subject of article. Here were the entire contents of the article that was deleted:
- 'hayarkon trio
- the yarkon trio was an entertiment group active in israel between 1963-1966
- Bulleted list item
- So, I think given that it was only a sentence long, anything would be an improvement. I have restored it and moved it to Draft:Yarkon Bridge Trio where you can work on it. Good luck with your editing! Liz Read! Talk! 17:11, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
- Many thanks. I worked on the article over the weekend and uploaded it now.--Daffidovic (talk) 06:40, 14 January 2019 (UTC)
Parliament categories
Hi Liz,
Regarding categories like the one in this edit - AIUI the general practice is for these categories to be one per Parliament, not per year. Circa 1400, there were about a dozen years with two parliaments each, which complicates things a bit. The memberships are apparently often quite distinct, with (for example) only 35 of 157 members from April 1414 known to reappear in the November 1414 Parliament, so it doesn't seem to make sense to lump them together in a single category. I'm not incredibly keen on the full "Month XXXX" names but I can't think of a snappier form (early/late?)
I've just finished some work on indexing MPs for the 1300s-1400s and I'm hoping to start populating the categories in a short while (probably need to set up a bot request first, as it'll be about 2500 edits). I had recategorised a couple of the existing ones as part of the preparation work but forgotten to list the old entries for deletion.
Hope you don't mind if I roll back your changes here and list the "amalgamated" categories for deletion instead! I'll hold off doing it until tomorrow in case you have concerns. Andrew Gray (talk) 22:22, 14 January 2019 (UTC)
- I see you've rolled some these changes back and listed the new categories for deletion again. As I noted, splitting these years into two for the two distinct parliaments is consistent with the way these are handled elsewhere (one cat per parliamentary term), and lumping them together when they have potentially quite distinct memberships seems arbitrary. I don't want to proceed with populating these cats until this is a bit more stable, and I'm not sure why you feel they ought to be merged - is there a category policy rule I'm missing? Andrew Gray (talk) 21:42, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
Am I missing something?
You nominated a number of cats, e.g Category:Fuegotrophon for deletion with the rationale that they are empty, yet they are not.--S Philbrick(Talk) 23:13, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

- At the risk of lighting up your talk page, Draft:Jennifer A Heemstra may be something you might be interested in as well. -- Dolotta (talk) 18:48, 16 January 2019 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, Dolotta, I'm just seeing your message now, I don't know why I didn't get a notification of your messages yesterday. It looks like Draft:Juice Press has since been deleted but I'll review the article and restore it if I think it might clear AfC (my acceptance record is so-so but I have had a few successes). I'll look at Draft:Jennifer A Heemstra, too, but since it isn't a red link, it looks like some other editor or admin has worked on it. Thanks for the notice and the good work you do tagging stale drafts. Liz Read! Talk! 01:58, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
- Draft:Juice Press had some reliable sources but the predominant editor is a now-blocked paid editor and it reads like an advertisement with a great deal of detail about its investors. Draft:Jennifer A Heemstra has some potential but it is an autobiography and it is not correctly referenced. But I did a little editing which will spare it for another 6 months in case an editor with an interest in classical music would like to work on it. Liz Read! Talk! 02:12, 18 January 2019 (UTC)

Category:Taiwanese railway station stubs
Hi Liz, perhaps you could help. During NPP I approved between 10-25 stub articles about Taiwanese rail stations. In so doing, I tagged them as stubs. In creating the stub, I also created this cat. But I cannot populate any of the articles with this cat. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I don't create many cats, so obviously I've screwed it up somehow. Here are a few of the stub articles which belong in the cat: Xiangshan railway station, Sanxingqiao railway station, Yutengping railway station, Yutengping railway station. Fastily had deleted it once before, and then restored it. I am struggling with populating the cat... thanks. Onel5969 TT me 01:45, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
- Hello, onel5969,
- I work with categories a lot and I've found Wikipedia:HotCat to be invaluable. It makes adding, changing and deleting categories a breeze if you know which ones you want to assign to the article. Once you click the - or + and start typing, the likely possible categories will appear and you can select the one you want. This only works with existing categories, ones that have already been created.
- Do not bother with the Advanced usage instructions on the HotCat page, just look at the "How to use" section. Go to your Preferences>Gadgets>Editing and click the HotCat button. Let me know if you have any questions but it should make assigning categories much easier and faster for you. Liz Read! Talk! 02:09, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Liz... yes, I use HotCat as well... and in this instance, if you click on any of the articles I list above, and attempt to add this cat, it won't let you. Not sure what to do. Onel5969 TT me 02:11, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
- Okay, onel5969, so you know about HotCat. I don't know why the category isn't showing up when you use that tool so I just edited those 3 pages that you mentioned and added Category:Taiwanese railway station stubs to the page and it shows up. Do you mind doing that for 10-25 more articles? Liz Read! Talk! 05:07, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi, is there any way you could be able to restore Draft:Amphetamine synthesis? As far as I'm aware, its creator wasn't notified it had become eligible for deletion. – Uanfala (talk) 01:02, 25 January 2019 (UTC)

- Thank you for pointing me to that conversation, Uanfala. Some old drafts (see Draft:Shona Tucker) indicate that they are now ready to be deleted. Others, have no pink tag that says it's okay to delete and so I tag them CSD G13 which notifies the creator. Maybe the AfC submission tag should be changed. Drafts that have not been submitted to AfC do not receive a tag that states it's okay to delete them. Liz Read! Talk! 01:20, 25 January 2019 (UTC)

Tracking categories
Hi Liz
Please take a look at the revision history of Category:Template SportsYearCatUSstate on invalid page ( | talk | history | links | watch | logs), which I just restored.
It's an error-tracking category. Such categories may be empty some or all the time. Ideally they will, be empty nearly all of the time ... so being empty is not grounds for deleting them.
In this case, your tagging on the category for WP:C1 was reverted by @Ymblanter, but with a note summarising some of the above ... but you deleted it anyway.
I only spotted this just now, and restored the category, adding {{Possibly empty category}}.
If you encounter empty tracking categories, please do not just speedy-delete the, especially when that speedy has been opposed.
In most cases it will be best to tag them with {{Possibly empty category}}, but it is best to check whether the template is still using the tracking category.
In the case above, the tracking cat contained a link to Template:SportsYearCatUSstate, where the documentation explicitly mentions the tracking category. I struggle to see why you thought deletion was appropriate . --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 05:28, 26 January 2019 (UTC)
- I guess I took some instructions too literally. Most categories that are sometimes empty, sometimes filled, have a {{emptycat}} tag on them. If I don't see a tag, I think it's okay to delete. Thank you for pointing out that I shouldn't do this without a further inquiry. Liz Read! Talk! 03:59, 27 January 2019 (UTC)

Just curious
so I'm told you left me a message this morning (world timely that's about 6 hours ago) couldn't find it untill i checked history. all you added was a header (aka ==Welcome==) it confused me because all of a sudden the page now has a Table of Contents. was that the intention? and How did you know it was needed? I looked through all revisions and saw no ToC until now --Qazwiz (talk) 12:38, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, I guess it is a personal quirk of mine, Qazwiz, but I hate to see content placed above a table of contents on user and article talk pages. All you need to do is place a header on the content and the table of contents rises to the top of the page. I hope it didn't bother you.
- By the way, an editor receives a notice any time anyone edits your user talk page...sometimes I have to search to find an edit and sometimes the edits are later reverted by another editor and there is no change at all to the talk page! An edit doesn't always mean that someone has left a message. You can also set your preferences regarding your notifications and either receive no notification or an email notification. Liz Read! Back when i was more active on wikipedia i was bothered that others had an index but my talk didn't. THANK YOU, refreshing that editors here know more than how to revert my multi hour edits LOL (sorry but reason i'm so cynical about wiki nowadays is Ive had about 50 - 100 hours of edits reverted POOF and "qazwiz? what qazwiz?" Interface administrator changes
- A request for comment is currently open to reevaluate the activity requirements for administrators.
- Administrators who are blocked have the technical ability to block the administrator who blocked their own account. A recent request for comment has amended the blocking policy to clarify that this ability should only be used in exceptional circumstances, such as account compromises, where there is a clear and immediate need.
- A request for comment closed with a consensus in favor of deprecating The Sun as a permissible reference, and creating an edit filter to warn users who attempt to cite it.
- A discussion regarding an overhaul of the format and appearance of Wikipedia:Requests for page protection is in progress (permalink). The proposed changes will make it easier to create requests for those who are not using Twinkle. The workflow for administrators at this venue will largely be unchanged. Additionally, there are plans to archive requests similar to how it is done at WP:PERM, where historical records are kept so that prior requests can more easily be searched for.
- Voting in the 2019 Steward elections will begin on 08 February 2019, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 28 February 2019, 13:59 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.
- A new IRC bot is available that allows you to subscribe to notifications when specific filters are tripped. This requires that your IRC handle be identified.
Category:People of Celtic Descent
Thank you for your input. My input was very clumsy, yet not in bad faith. I hope this can be resolved as I do not with to engage in endless edit wars with BrownEyedGirl or DuncanHill. Their lack of explanation for creating and applying the categories, and reverting my deletes, pushed me into this. I hoped it could be left in some form to apply to Iron Age folk, but it and its offshoot categories may really be best deleted. They really are too fuzzy for use. Fergananim (talk) 17:36, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
- Fergananim, if Wikipedia eliminated all editors who have been involved in a dispute with other editors, there would be no editors left to work on the encyclopedia! You look through my talk page archives (or those of CfD) and you'll see the times where BrownEyedGirl and I were on opposite sides of a dispute. And while we still do not also agree with each other, I have learned that BrownEyedGirl knows the ins and outs of categorization better than I do and she is (almost!) always right, as least as far as policy goes. I now believe that some of the categorization policies would be good to change but that will take a time when I have more time and energy to deal with an RfC on those matters.
- The great thing about Wikipedia is that you do learn how things are done the more time you spend editing. It might be that in the future, you do come up with some appropriate and well-defined categorizations that Wikipedia doesn't already have or that work better than what we have now and this time, your changes will stick! Request for comment List of churches in Sweden
You nominated this list for deletion. I voted "keep" (and I find I was wrong). I am trying to make this list useable. I am working on editing the list, but it is massive. I would appreciate your comment on the talk page of the article. Thanks Aurornisxui (talk) 17:42, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
- It is an enormous list, Aurornisxui and I'm not sure about the source for the information. I've glanced at the talk page discussion and I agree with other editors that this list would be much more manageable if it was broken down into geographic areas. What I've seen in other subjects has been to come up with lists that cover the main/primary large cities, first, and then work outward towards secondary cities, and later provinces/states/counties.
- The problem with this list, and why it was nominated, is that it is just so gigantic, having an entire country's churches on a single list is hard to navigate. Break it into smaller lists and it'll be easier to tackle and it won't seem so overwhelming. It will also be more satisfying as you finish one list and then move to another rather than attempting to update this list with its thousands of churches. Kudos to you for taking on this project! Liz Read! Talk! 22:12, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you Liz, it is overwhelming. The sources for the information are Swedish Wikipedia (which has some excellent references) and, more importantly, The Swedish National Historic Board. I was planning on making just one list, but break it into pages. I don't want to clutter things up any more than they already are. Aurornisxui (talk) 22:21, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

Shanelle Nyasiase
I tagged the draft of Shanelle Nyasiase for deletion because I created the article already as I was tired of going back and forth with an unexperienced editor who kept submitting it as a troll when it clearly wasn’t ready and would have been declined. It has to be deleted because now it’s a duplicate. Yet people over at ANI wanted to turn it into something personal and clearly not understanding what is wrong. For that reason, nothing else needs to be done with the draft unless the troll wants to continue their futile doodles.Trillfendi (talk) 04:38, 18 February 2019 (UTC)

Deletion of Nubile page?
Hi, I got a notification that the page Nubile was deleted. While I can't remember the page in detail, I was obviously involved, but now I can't see history to find out. Was it a redirect...vague memory perhaps linked to lotita, or did I change it from lolita to something like sexual attraction maybe (as lolita was not the correct context). "Term not even mentioned on target article" I suspect that would lead to a large number of redirects being deleted. Surely there will be people who search for Nubile, as I suspect I did, and while a specific page may not be extant a redirect to a similar topic is warranted? ˥ Ǝ Ʉ H Ɔ I Ɯ (talk) 06:22, 23 February 2019 (UTC)
- You really think that readers will do a search for the obscure, literary term "nubile"? The page was a one line redirect to Physical attractiveness and there was no mention of what nubile was, what it referred to, much less any meaning of the word. I wouldn't be opposed to a new article but it seemed like a useless redirect when connection to "nubile" and attractiveness wasn't even spelled out. Liz Read! Talk! 06:28, 23 February 2019 (UTC)
- The dictionary defn contains e.g. "2. Sexually mature and attractive. Used of young women.", the linked article 2nd line "The term often implies sexual attractiveness or desirability", which I felt was a better match than lolita, it is a back step to delete things rather than evolve/improve. Anyway...I just didn't think linking it to lolita was appropriate, so having it deleted achieves the same end. I'm starting to get a carefactor in wiki editing anyway...˥ Ǝ Ʉ H Ɔ I Ɯ (talk) 06:43, 23 February 2019 (UTC)

Hello, Liz,
I have gone back and looked. It appears information about J&K of South Africa (a company that does not exist), was smuggled into Uganda Oil Refinery and Energy in Uganda. I agree with you that it is a hoax. Fsmatovu 02:27, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

WikiCup 2019 March newsletter
And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2. With 56 contestants qualifying, each group in Round 2 contains seven contestants, with the two leaders from each group due to qualify for Round 3 as well as the top sixteen remaining contestants.
Our top scorers in Round 1 were:
- L293D, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with ten good articles on submarines for a total of 357 points.
- Adam Cuerden, a WikiCup veteran, came next with 274 points, mostly from eight featured pictures, restorations of artwork.
- MPJ-DK, a wrestling enthusiast, was in third place with 263 points, garnered from a featured list, five good articles, two DYKs and four GARs.
- Usernameunique came next at 243, with a featured article and a good article, both on ancient helmets.
- Squeamish Ossifrage was in joint fifth place with 224 points, mostly garnered from bringing the 1937 Fox vault fire to featured article status.
- Ed! was also on 224, with an amazing number of good article reviews (56 actually).
These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews on 143 good articles, one hundred more than the number of good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Well done all!
Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.
If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! - Following discussions at the Bureaucrats' noticeboard and Wikipedia talk:Administrators, an earlier change to the restoration of adminship policy was reverted. Was there some special reason why Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2017_December_15#Template:Kartographer_WLM_pin were not valid any more? Bug still exists as it was confirmed on just day before you deleted the template (phab:T168601). Also as said in the discussion way to replicate is to use page in enwiki as mapframe uses enwiki as a backend for rendering the templates. --Zache (talk) 07:30, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

Our team at the Wikimedia Foundation is working on a project to improve the ease-of-use and productivity of wiki talk pages. As a Teahouse host, I can imagine you’ve run into challenges explaining talk pages to first-time participants.
We want all contributors to be able to talk to each other on the wikis – to ask questions, to resolve differences, to organize projects and to make decisions. Communication is essential for the depth and quality of our content, and the health of our communities. We're currently leading a global consultation on how to improve talk pages, and we're looking for people that can report on their experiences using (or helping other people to use) wiki talk pages. We'd like to invite you to participate in the consultation, and invite new users to join too.
We thank you in advance for your participation and your help.

Destroying instead of closing
Perhaps you should consider closing the clear consensus discussions instead of destroying the work put into getting ready to action the discussion. Legacypac (talk) 21:49, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
- Can you tell me what page or article you are referring to, Legacypac? Then I'll know how to respond to your query. Liz Read! Talk! 21:57, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
- Anything around X3 you are tagging for deletion. Legacypac (talk) 22:04, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
- That redirect didn't lead to any section of the target page. I didn't know the redirect was being discussed, there was no tag on the page stating that it was the subject of any discussion. I'm not sure why the redirect page was created before the CSD criteria was approved which it was meant to post to. That was premature. Liz Read! Talk! 23:54, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

March GOCE newsletter
Guild of Copy Editors March 2019 Newsletter
Hello and welcome to the March newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2018. All being well, we're planning to issue these quarterly in 2019, balancing the need to communicate widely with the avoidance of filling up talk pages. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below. January Drive: Thanks to everyone for the splendid work in January's Backlog Elimination Drive. We removed copyedit tags from all of the articles tagged in our original target months of June, July and August 2018, and by 24 January we ran out of articles. After adding September, we finished the month with 8 target articles remaining and 842 left in the backlog. GOCE copyeditors also completed 48 requests for copyedit in January. Of the 31 people who signed up for this drive, 24 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Blitz: Thanks to everyone who participated in the February Blitz. Of the 15 people who signed up, 13 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed 32 copyedits, including 15 requests. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: As of 23:39, 18 March 2019 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have completed 108 requests since 1 January and the backlog stands at 851 articles. March Drive: The month-long March drive is now underway; the target months are October and November 2018. Awards will be given to everyone who copyedits at least one article from the backlog. Sign up here! Election reminder: It may only be March but don't forget our mid-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 June. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here. Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Miniapolis, Baffle gab1978, Jonesey95, Reidgreg and Tdslk. To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

Minor correction
In your statement re the Portal issues Arbitration request, you comment "They are not akin to Nellie's thousands of ill-thought-out redirects.". The redirects were created by user:Nelix not Nellie.
If you have not done so already (I haven't looked), you may wish to opine on the proposed temporary speedy deletion criterion discussion at WP:AN and/or the prosed expansion of P2 at WT:CSD. Thryduulf (talk) 00:02, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting me know about that typo, Thryduulf. I'm not on my standard keyboard so I can see how I made a mistake. I will correct it. Liz Read! Talk! 00:07, 26 March 2019 (UTC)

Request to revert deletion
The category Category:Civil rights in the United States was deleted by you, despite my request to move discussion to cfd. The category was not empty as it contained the parent article Civil rights in the United States before Le Deluge emptied it. Mitchumch (talk) 05:00, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
- Empty categories sit for 7 days in case there has been an out-of-process emptying, Mitchumch. Is there a reason you didn't move the discussion to CfD yourself during those 7 days? Liz Read! Talk! 05:04, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
- Because I didn't initiate the
delete discussion.deletion of category. I requested Le Deluge to do so less than two hours before you deleted the category. That request also represented an ongoing discussion. I thought that ongoing discussion would merit a postponement of the deletion. Categories that are proposed for deletion that have ongoing discussions beyond 7 days routinely remain undeleted until discussion is complete. Mitchumch (talk) 05:09, 27 March 2019 (UTC)- The "discussion" was you saying the category should not be deleted and Le Deluge saying that it should. There would not have been any resolution of this one-one-one conversation because you asked Le Deluge to post a request to discuss the category at CfD at the last minute. He legitimately tagged the category for CSD C1 deletion so why would he be arguing for the category to exist when it was empty? I'll restore the category but it is up to you, Mitchumch, to make a case at CfD for why it should not be deleted (which will be tricky since discussions there are usually about merging or deleting not saving). Since it usually takes 7 days to close a non-unanimous CfD discussion, that should take the a week as well. And, it would help your case at CfD if you assigned some parent categories to the page as right now as it is an orphan category.
- I hope you understand that deleting empty categories that are not a) part of a CfD discussion, b) redirects or c) are tracking categories that are occasionally empty, is simply policy. We don't keep empty categories that aren't being utilized no matter what subject they cover. Liz Read! Talk! 05:47, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
- The talk page also needs to be restored and all history is missing beyond my creation of the category. Mitchumch (talk) 06:02, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
- Sorry for overlooking the talk page, Mitchumch, I'll take care of that. By the way, there were only two edits to the category, one edit to create it and one edit to tag it for deletion. I assume you didn't want the tag reinstated but as long as it is empty, it will likely be tagged again soon. Liz Read! Talk! 01:19, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

Portal guidelines
Regarding getting the WikiProjects involved: I've been saying this for a month at Wikipedia talk:Portal/Guidelines, and it was raised as a proposal by UnitedStatesian. To me it's the only scalable, sustainable way to identify the best entry points for topic areas and to maintain them. isaacl (talk) 00:37, 30 March 2019 (UTC)
- Well, it's your and UnitedStatesian brilliant idea, then, isaacl. What do you think we can do to make this happen? I'll post a message at the WikiProject Council. Liz Read! Talk! 00:42, 30 March 2019 (UTC)
- Pretty sure I'm not the first either, just the one that keeps raising it in the current set of threads. There isn't really a WikiProject Council; it's just a page that some people watch and offer opinions on. If more people would comment on the proposal on the portal guidelines talk page, then perhaps it can gain consensus support. isaacl (talk) 00:45, 30 March 2019 (UTC)
- Oops! I didn't realize there wasn't an actual council. I'll have to alter my post there. Thanks for informing me. I think the proposal discussion is so massive, that it is intimidating to take on. Liz Read! Talk! 01:07, 30 March 2019 (UTC)
- I mean there's a page called that, but it's essentially just a talk page for people interested in WikiProjects. (I didn't follow it during its heyday, so maybe it was different before, but it certainly has been like that for long time now.) Other people commenting on the case have said similar things about the size of the discussion, but there aren't really a lot of alternatives with English Wikipedia's decision-making traditions. Discussions are open to everyone and they all get to have their say. I could be misremembering, but as far as I recall, the conversation has been relatively calm compared with many others I've seen in the past. isaacl (talk) 01:45, 30 March 2019 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Category:Disestablishments in Qatar by millennium
Hello Liz. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Category:Disestablishments in Qatar by millennium, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Category is populated and has not been empty for 7 days. Thank you. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 05:08, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

User Marshmallow123321
Hi Liz! I hope that you're having a great day and that life is treating you well! I just wanted to let you know that I set Marshmallow123321's block duration to be indefinite. There's no doubt that the purpose of this account is only for engaging in vandalism. Given the total edits made by this account, as well as the severity of some of them (I had to rev del a few), a VOA block felt necessary to me. If you have objections or issues with my extension of the block you initially placed, please let me know. You're welcome to modify the changes I made to the block and without my prior input or approval. Just let me know that you did so and your thoughts and reasons behind the change. :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:18, 2 April 2019 (UTC)
- It's very thoughtful for you to let me know, Oshwah. I have no problem with you extending the block on this editor given their vandalism. Liz Read! Talk! 01:22, 2 April 2019 (UTC)
My category
Hi Liz, I noticed that you nominated my category for speedy deletion. Thank you for reminding me! I created that category and put my user page in it because of a userbox there was there that is not a template. Since I moved all my userboxes to a separate subpage, I removed that template from my user page, but forgot to put it into my userbox subpage, leaving the category empty. Although, the template can be deleted now because I don't feel I need it. Thank you! Catinthedogs (talk) 12:09, 2 April 2019 (UTC) Although, when you nominate a page for speedy deletion, I suggest that you notify the creator on their talk page, as it says on the notice. I am talking about Wikipedian Michael Jackson fans. Catinthedogs (talk) 04:05, 3 April 2019 (UTC) My user talk page redirects to my user page, but all the content of my talk page was put there, so someone could easily leave me a talk page message from that section of my user page. Possible Future GA Article
Hey I have been editing George W. Bush 2000 presidential campaign for the past few months and taken it from a list with just his platform to what it is now. I am not nominating it for GA yet, but can you read over it and give me your opinion on whether or not it could be a GA once it is complete? Jon698 (talk) 3:56, 6 April 2019 (UTC)
