Files for discussion (FfD) is for listing images and other media files which are unneeded or have either free content or non-free content usage concerns. Files that have been listed here for more than 7 days are eligible for either deletion or removal from pages if either a consensus to do so has been reached or no objections to deletion or removal have been raised. To quote the non-free content criteria, "it is the duty of users seeking to include or retain content to provide a valid rationale; those seeking to remove or delete it are not required to show that one cannot be created." For undeletion requests, first contact the administrator who deleted the file. If you are unable to resolve the issue with that administrator, the matter should be brought to deletion review. Examples of what files you may request for discussion, deletion or change here:
If you have questions if something should be deleted, consider asking at Media Copyright Questions. | |||||||

Instructions for listing files for discussion To list a file:
State the reasons why the file should be deleted, removed, or altered. Also, state what specific action should be taken, preferably in bold text; this allows discussion participants and closers to better understand the purpose of the nomination. Some examples of nomination statements include:
These are not the only "valid" reasons to discuss a file. Any properly explained reason can be used. The above list comprises the most common and uncontroversial ones. If you remove a file from an article, list the article from which you removed it so there can be community review of whether the file should be deleted. This is necessary because file pages do not remember the articles on which the file were previously used. |

Instructions for discussion participation
In responding to the deletion nomination, consider adding your post in the format
* '''View''' - Reasoning ... -- ~~~~
where "Delete", "Keep", "Comment", or something else may replace "View". In posting their reasoning, many editors use abbreviations and cite to the following:
- Wikipedia:NFCC#1 – Free equivalent is/is not available
- Wikipedia:NFCC#8 – Significance
- Wikipedia:Non-free content#Images 2 – Unacceptable image use
Remember that polling is not a substitute for discussion. Wikipedia's primary method of determining consensus is through editing and discussion, not voting. Although editors occasionally use straw polls in an attempt to test for consensus, polls or surveys sometimes impede rather than assist discussion. They should be used with caution, and are no more binding than any other consensus decision.
Also remember that if you believe that an image is potentially useful for other projects and should be moved to Wikimedia Commons, in lieu of responding '''Move to Commons'''
, you can move it there yourself. See Wikipedia:Moving files to the Commons for instructions.

Non-free image being used in 1982 Sri Lankan presidential election "for visual identification of the election candidate". There is no significant sourced discussion about the image, and there is no need to for visual identification of the person to understand the topic of the article which is the election. - File:Cambridge Muslim college logo.png (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Muslimsson ( | contribs | uploads | upload log).
Dubious non-free use rationale. This image of an alternative logo is unnecessary as we have another logo for the college (File:Cambridge Muslim college logo.jpg). Breaks WP:NFCCP criteria 3a (minimal number of items) and 8 (contextual significance). The other logo is preferred as it appears on the college's homepage. Same reason as last time; this article not having a copyrighted screenshot of the episode was a prerequisite to its being promoted to GA, and we seem to be moving away from such images in TV episode articles in general. In this case in particular, it should need to go through GAR before any new images are added. Hijiri 88 (聖やや) 04:19, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
- Comment: I added the image after The Optimistic One requested it last year (see here). If there is a problem with having a non-free image on this article (of which I can see the arguments), there really does need to be a WP:TV discussion about the use of non-free images in across all shows, I think Hijiri88. I mean, if removing the image is what it takes for an article to be a good article, that suggests to me that having non-free images like this on any episode article is not a good idea, or only on a very few. I'm posting a link to the good article review in question here. --TedEdwards 12:13, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
- Technically, what makes an article a GA is meeting the requests of the GA reviewer. It's a severely flawed system, but it's what we have at the moment. Hijiri 88 (聖やや) 12:21, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
- O.K. But I still think starting a discussion of WP:TV could still be a good idea, so I'm wondering what you think. --TedEdwards 12:26, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
- Comment: Every other episode has a non-free image, why is it only this episode that gets penalised for having one? The Optimistic One (talk) 21:06, 15 April 2019 (UTC)
- @The Optimistic One: WP:OSE. Every other episode should not have a non-free image; the other episode articles either are not GAs, or their GA review was not thorough enough. Articles on episodes of other shows do not seem to have such images: I recall discussing this and hearing as much from someone else on one of the GOT talk pages two years ago, and just now clicked a bunch of links on List of Breaking Bad episodes that bore this out. Hijiri 88 (聖やや) 08:51, 16 April 2019 (UTC)

- Delete, again. It's really not OK that this keeps getting re-uploaded. And we don't need yet another discussion about this: there's no automatic "entitlement" to include a non-free screenshot in episode articles. It's possible that GOT is lagging behind. - Do we need, and can we justify, two non-free images on this article ffor "identification"? "Precedent"' has been cited in edit summaries: [1], but I thought it was worth raising the question here for clarification. Pinging Guliolopez, an editor who I greatly respect, and sincerely hope is not offended by my raising this, as concerned. -- Begoon 13:05, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
- Hi. If both images had the exact same purpose ("identification of the subject"), then that would perhaps not be justifiable. However, before this more recent version was uploaded (replacing a perfectly viable alternative with a more complete FUR rationale IMO), the FUR purpose given was not just "identification". But also to "illustrate the organization's intended branding message". Two crests/logos with the exact same purpose are perhaps not justifiable. But two university logos/crests with different purposes? (One for "identifying the subject", another for "understanding the branding message"?) In my view this is justifiable. And, apparently, has historically been seen as justifiable/appropriate on many dozens (hundreds?) of university infoboxes. Where two FUR images (one crest and one logo) appear together. (The articles/infoboxes on Princeton, Harvard, U of London, Columbia and many many others all include two FUR images. Without question or concern. I'm not sure why we would apply a more stringent interpretation of WP:NFC#CS here. Not least when, per WP:NFC#CS, the "single item" criterion only applies when the FUR purpose given is "identification". Which isn't the case here. Or, at least, wasn't until very recently.) Coupled with the fact that these are not commercial/monetizable images, I do not see why we would not/could not justify retaining both. Guliolopez (talk) 14:00, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
- If we're comfortable with all that as a reason to retain multiple non-free images then I'm happy with that. It didn't initially seem justifiable to me, hence the question. I'd welcome further opinions, though. -- Begoon 14:20, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

- Delete per WP:NFCC#3a. The emblem is included in the logo. — JJMC89 (T·C) 00:20, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
- Comment - If that's the case, then why not delete the logo instead? And, for that matter, are we saying that the logos (or crests) of Princeton, Harvard, London and other similar Infobox elements are to be brought into the scope of this FfD? (I am happy to extend the scope if we think there's a misapplication of policy to the elements of these University Infoboxes - that therefore requires a broader discussion.) This is a derivative of a logo whose use is licensed by usb.org and probably under copyright. Therefore, the uploader's license is likely not correct. I believe it would be better for us to use a copy of the real logo if we are going to have the image, and I don't think that the image adds much to the Glossary of machine vision page where it is used. ★ Bigr Tex 19:26, 14 April 2019 (UTC)

Screenshot of one of two versions of the logo for the Proud as a Peacock advertising campaign by NBC. This second image, with no critical commentary or even mention of it outside of the caption, does not "significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic" and therefore violates WP:NFCCP#8. The boilerplate rationale template also gives me pause, as I doubt that "The logo may be obtained from Proud as a Peacock," nor does the purpose statement about identifying the brand make any sense. ★ Bigr Tex 20:20, 14 April 2019 (UTC)

Any guidance would be appreciated as I've never done this before. I must warn that the copyright holder is not someone I know personally so I don't know how likely they are to respond promptly. - Delete: I originally added the ticket received tag and have reviewed it again now but nothing has been heard since last December. No permission has been received on this ticket which also includes File:Dorotas Wildcat pic2.jpg that should also be deleted. ww2censor (talk) 22:02, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for pointing that out, I've amended the nomination to include File:Dorotas Wildcat pic2.jpg -FASTILY 22:04, 16 April 2019 (UTC)

- My fault I told the copyright holder what to send to OTRS, and (a) they've obviously messed it up, and (b) I hadn't noticed the tag on the files. I'll try to get the permission sent again. Black Kite (talk) 21:00, 16 April 2019 (UTC)

Today is April 17 2019. Put new nominations in Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2019 April 17 -- ()
If the current date's page has been started without the header, apply {{subst:Ffd log}} to the top of the day's page.
Please ensure "===April 17===" is at the very top of the new page so that internal page links from the main Files for discussion page (the one you're on now) work.
The page Wikipedia:Files for discussion/Today will always show today's log.
