Files for discussion (FfD) is for listing images and other media files which are unneeded or have either free content or non-free content usage concerns. Files that have been listed here for more than 7 days are eligible for either deletion or removal from pages if either a consensus to do so has been reached or no objections to deletion or removal have been raised. To quote the non-free content criteria, "it is the duty of users seeking to include or retain content to provide a valid rationale; those seeking to remove or delete it are not required to show that one cannot be created." For undeletion requests, first contact the administrator who deleted the file. If you are unable to resolve the issue with that administrator, the matter should be brought to deletion review. Examples of what files you may request for discussion, deletion or change here:
If you have questions if something should be deleted, consider asking at Media Copyright Questions. | |||||||

Instructions for listing files for discussion To list a file:
State the reasons why the file should be deleted, removed, or altered. Also, state what specific action should be taken, preferably in bold text; this allows discussion participants and closers to better understand the purpose of the nomination. Some examples of nomination statements include:
These are not the only "valid" reasons to discuss a file. Any properly explained reason can be used. The above list comprises the most common and uncontroversial ones. If you remove a file from an article, list the article from which you removed it so there can be community review of whether the file should be deleted. This is necessary because file pages do not remember the articles on which the file were previously used. |

Instructions for discussion participation
In responding to the deletion nomination, consider adding your post in the format
* '''View''' - Reasoning ... -- ~~~~
where "Delete", "Keep", "Comment", or something else may replace "View". In posting their reasoning, many editors use abbreviations and cite to the following:
- Wikipedia:NFCC#1 – Free equivalent is/is not available
- Wikipedia:NFCC#8 – Significance
- Wikipedia:Non-free content#Images 2 – Unacceptable image use
Remember that polling is not a substitute for discussion. Wikipedia's primary method of determining consensus is through editing and discussion, not voting. Although editors occasionally use straw polls in an attempt to test for consensus, polls or surveys sometimes impede rather than assist discussion. They should be used with caution, and are no more binding than any other consensus decision.
Also remember that if you believe that an image is potentially useful for other projects and should be moved to Wikimedia Commons, in lieu of responding '''Move to Commons'''
, you can move it there yourself. See Wikipedia:Moving files to the Commons for instructions.

File:Adult-art-artisan.jpg
- File:Adult-art-artisan.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Kolya Butternut ( | contribs | uploads | upload log).
Image is sourced to https://www.pexels.com/photo/adult-art-artisan-artist-1486470/ which has an free license but with commercial restrictions. The license terms does allow for some commercial use but not all commercial use. The license is not sufficiently free for Wikipedia and is certainly not CC0 as claimed by the uploader.as tagged by a subsequent editor. Whpq (talk) 08:49, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

- Which which bit of the Pexels license terms resricts commercial use? — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 09:18, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
- I think the license is fine but we don't need to figure that out here. Since Commons allows Pexel imports and has a {pexel-cc-zero} license template for this situation, I moved the photo to Commons. It can be deleted from Wikipedia as it is now an orphaned file anyway and I will CSD-F8 this file now as it is a duplicate of a Commons file. Leviv ich 15:30, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
- The license is still problematic. You need to look at the details of the pexels CC0 license at Commons. The license applies only for those files that can be shown to have been published prior to 4 July 2018 as they changed from CC-zero to their current not free enough license. See also this discussion on Commons. -- Whpq (talk) 18:29, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
- I understand, but the issue is whether the "Photographed on" date is considered the publication date, or if we assume a post-4 July 2018 publication date because we don't have an explicit publication date on Pexels. If the latter, then we can't use any Pexels pics unless they're explicitly marked CC0. In any event, we're having this conversation at the Commons DR, so I think everyone is in agreement that this particular file can be speedy-deleted F8 as a duplicate. (Also it's now an orphan.) Keep and move to commons According to official Pexels license, commercial use is allowed except for things such as selling the image. Use on Wikipedia does not meet any of the criteria of disallowed use. Also, Commons does allow images from Pexels (has a category and license template for images from Pexels).
Delete Even though use on Wikipedia complies with Pexel license on commercial use, it does have some restrictions and Wikipedia generally does not consider files with commercial restrictions as free images. --Atomicdragon136 (talk) 01:34, 12 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Atomicdragon136: did you read the above discussion? If this type of commercial use is disallowed, then it's a non-free license. Files on Wikipedia/Commons need to be free (meet the Definition of Free Cultural Works). It's not about our use, it's about what we allow our re-users to do. That's why we don't accept any licenses that disallow commercial use, even though Wikipedia itself is entirely non-commercial. And Commons only allows files that were on Pexels before 4 July 2018 (see c:Template:Pexels-Cc-zero). – Finnusertop (talk ⋅ contribs) 13:24, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

- Delete. Images that pose licensing burdens on reusers beyond those inherent to the CC license are generally not acceptable here unless they are fair use. I do not believe a decision to accept a new non-commercial license, even one that allows certain commercial uses but not others, is in the best interests of the project, and I do not believe that this image is important enough to us to seriously consider it to be an exceptional case. - Can you point us to this "rough consensus" that says images distributed by the FBI are therefore their copyright? As for being an AF photo, the USAF (and other branches of the US military) often contract out their portrait photography, so an image that's 'courtesy the US Air Force' isn't necessarily theirs unless there's a photography credit to verify that. — fourthords | =Λ= | 05:43, 18 February 2019 (UTC)
- If it is contracted then it would be a work for hire and the copyright would fall back to the US. Let me dig up some discussions. I was looking through our articles about people who have reached the most wanted list and about half of them use photos from the wanted poster. --Guerillero | Parlez Moi 05:52, 18 February 2019 (UTC)
- It's my understanding that work performed by a contracted entity remains the copyright of that entity. I interpreted that as the determination of this Commons deletion discussion. This 2011 discussion as well as my own experience with these third-party contractors are my touchstone for the unreliability of saying any US federally-distributed image is theirs and PD. — fourthords | =Λ= | 06:02, 18 February 2019 (UTC)
- As always with contracts, it depends on the specific terms of the specific contracts. At one point various interest groups were arguing that the contracts should be reformed so that everything produced is PD, but I don't know if that every went anywhere. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 15:44, 18 February 2019 (UTC)

This collage of non-free images is being used decoratively in the article about the actor. There is no significant sourced commentary about these images and so fails to meet WP:NFC#8. As well, the use of a collage of two images fails WP:NFCC#3a Whpq (talk) 15:07, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
The image depicts historical characters acted by the actor. There are comments about the image although not explicitly. The section where the image is present discusses the variety of roles portrayed by him, mainly the historical roles. The collage of images are from two of the most popular historical movies by him. Hence the image should be retained so as to give a clear picture about the actor. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ideal917 (talk • contribs) 04:42, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

Very much oversized non-free image (now at 1.5Mpx) - there is no rationale for such a very large size as stated in WP:NFC - At the extreme high end of the range, non-free images where one dimension exceeds 1,000 pixels, or where the pixel count approaches 1 megapixel, will very likely require a close review to verify that the image needs that level of resolution. Editors should ensure that the image rationale fully explains the need for such a level of detail. Ronhjones (Talk) 02:56, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- Comment If this is reduced in size it is possible that the text in the bottom right will become illegible. If this happens it will be important to transcribe it into the image description and possibly caption. Thryduulf (talk) 11:46, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
File:GE9X cutaway.jpg
- File:GE9X cutaway.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Marc Lacoste ( | contribs | uploads | upload log).
I believe this fair-use image (used in General Electric GE9X) fails WP:FU criteria #8 for contextual significance. Configuration details specific to this engine are almost invisible at this low resolution. What is visible (the main configuration and layout) is not at all specific to the GE9X. We have plenty of images of similar engines available to show a fan, compressor, turbine arrangement, including the GE90 from which this engine has been developed. Now that we have a free photo of the actual engine as a lead image, there is no need in my eyes to keep GE’s non-free version. Ariadacapo (talk) 06:35, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- The exterior picture of the fan does not show the engine config. A free picture of a cutaway could be taken in a museum/airshow to illustrate its config, like in Pratt_&_Whitney_Canada_PT6#Design, but no engine cutaway is on display and could replace it. The low resolution is due to the mandatory resize, the original does show each stage, in a different config than the previous GE90 (3LP+11HP vs 3LP+10HP or 4LP+9HP compressor) with no cutaway anyway, and the relative size of the parts is not the same (the GE9x core is relatively smaller). It seems to me an interesting fair use usage of a promo picture, not available by other means right now.--Marc Lacoste (talk) 09:47, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- The original image is super interesting — we can make an external link to it. But as it stands now in the article, it brings nothing that can’t also be seen in many other free images we already have. Ariadacapo (talk) 10:21, 21 March 2019 (UTC)

- File:Boeing 777X launch.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Wbm1058 ( | contribs | uploads | upload log).
I believe this non-free photo (used on Boeing 777X) now fails criteria #1 and #8 of WP:FU: "no free equivalent", and "contextual significance".
(this image formerly displayed two airplanes and was used as lead. now that we have a free lead image, it is used to illustrate different configurations of the 777X)
The only useful visual information here is that the -8 airplane is shorter than the -9. A sentence is enough to convey this information. If not, a simple diagram could be created. Ariadacapo (talk) 07:31, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- As you note, it is a
different configurations
, not illustrated in the main pic anymore. It will not have a free equivalent until the -8 variant is rolled out. The visual difference, being shorter, is the main difference between variants. There are others like the exit door config. This is a useful usage of a promo picture. A diagram would be a nice supplement.--Marc Lacoste (talk) 09:51, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- I fail to see how this supports criteria #1 (a free equivalent could definitely be created for the same purpose) and #8 (removing the photo would not be detrimental to the readers’ understanding of the topic). We can add an external link to the non-free photo montage instead of embedding a thumbnail. Ariadacapo (talk) 10:19, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
File:Rio Grande Valley Dorados Helmet 2019.png
- File:Rio Grande Valley Dorados Helmet 2019.png (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by NostalgiaBuff97501 ( | contribs | uploads | upload log).
Non-free image which is not needed per WP:NFCC#3a. There is already a non-free file of the logo (File:Rio Grande Valley Dorados.png) being used for primary identification purposes in the main infobox; so, there's no need for two non-free files which are providing essentially the same information. If the color of the helmet is worth mentioning in the article, it can be sufficiently done so using text per WP:FREER. This file was prodded for deletion, but deprodded by the uploader; so, I'm bringing it's non-free use up for discussion here. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:55, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- This file is THE helmet that is being used by the team as is evident by a YouTube video of an actual game payed a week and a half ago. The link can be found on the team's page and the proof is right there. NostalgiaBuff97501 (talk) 09:03, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- Whether this file actually shows the helmet used by the team has nothing to do with why its non-free use is being discussed here. There are two logos being used in the infobox that are basically identical and provide the same encyclopedic information to the reader, but there's no need for two such files per Wikipedia's non-free content use policy. The logo file shows the teams logo more clearly and it seems better for that one to be kept; however, if you think it's better for the reader to see the helmet file, then perhaps that's the one which should be kept. -- Marchjuly (talk) 09:25, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
File:Austin Wild Helmet 2018.png
- File:Austin Wild Helmet 2018.png (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by NostalgiaBuff97501 ( | contribs | uploads | upload log).
For similar reasons as given above for #File:Rio Grande Valley Dorados Helmet 2019.png, two non-free files basically showing the same logo and providing the same encyclopedic information are not needed for primary identification purposes in the main infobox per WP:NFCC#3a. Whether its better to keep this file or File:Austin Wild.png can be discussed, but the logo file does seem to be better for identification purposes than the helmet file; so, that's the one I would suggest keeping. -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:39, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
