Files for discussion (FfD) is for listing images and other media files which are unneeded or have either free content or non-free content usage concerns. Files that have been listed here for more than 7 days are eligible for either deletion or removal from pages if either a consensus to do so has been reached or no objections to deletion or removal have been raised. To quote the non-free content criteria, "it is the duty of users seeking to include or retain content to provide a valid rationale; those seeking to remove or delete it are not required to show that one cannot be created." For undeletion requests, first contact the administrator who deleted the file. If you are unable to resolve the issue with that administrator, the matter should be brought to deletion review. Examples of what files you may request for deletion or change here:
If you have questions if something should be deleted, consider asking at Media Copyright Questions. |

Instructions for listing files for discussion To list a file:
State the reasons why the file should be deleted, removed, or altered. Also, state what specific action should be taken, preferably in bold text; this allows discussion participants and closers to better understand the purpose of the nomination. Some examples of nomination statements include:
These are not the only "valid" reasons to discuss a file. Any properly explained reason can be used. The above list comprises the most common and uncontroversial ones. Since abbreviated deletion reasons will not be familiar to most Wikipedians, especially newbies, please consider using full words. A few extra keystrokes now can save paragraphs of explanation to a panicked uploader wondering what's wrong with their image. If you remove a file from an article, list the article from which you removed it so there can be community review of whether the file should be deleted. This is necessary because file pages do not remember the articles on which the file were previously used. |

Instructions for discussion participation
In responding to the deletion nomination, consider adding your post in the format
* '''View''' - Reasoning ... -- ~~~~
where "Delete", "Keep", "Comment", or something else may replace "View". In posting their reasoning, many editors use abbreviations and cite to the following:
- Wikipedia:NFCC#1 – Free equivalent is/is not available
- Wikipedia:NFCC#8 – Significance
- Wikipedia:Non-free content#Images 2 – Unacceptable image use
Remember that polling is not a substitute for discussion. Wikipedia's primary method of determining consensus is through editing and discussion, not voting. Although editors occasionally use straw polls in an attempt to test for consensus, polls or surveys sometimes impede rather than assist discussion. They should be used with caution, and are no more binding than any other consensus decision.
Also remember that if you believe that an image is potentially useful for other projects and should be moved to Wikimedia Commons, in lieu of responding '''Move to Commons'''
, you can move it there yourself. See Wikipedia:Moving files to the Commons for instructions.

This file was recently replaced by File:Lexa (The 100).jpg in the infobox at Lexa (The 100) and moved to another section. However, this seems an unnecessary use of non-free content so I orphaned the image and nominated it for deletion under WP:CSD#F5. It has now been restored by the editor who uploaded it, and the CSD tag was removed with the edit summary "Nope. Nominate it for deletion if you want it gone". AussieLegend (✉) 08:23, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
- Delete. The image was initially uploaded by me as the lead image. I recently changed the lead image and moved File:Lexa, from the series "The 100".jpg to the Casting and creation section of the article because it had a bit of information about the wardrobe of "Grounder" characters, which is what Lexa is, and I knew that I would be expanding the makeup and wardrobe material in that section. I went ahead and expanded the material after reverting AussieLegend. I included the image in the Casting and creation section per the number 5 listing at Wikipedia:Non-free content#Images. For more examples, see the Concept and creation section of the Jason Voorhees article and the Signature scar, hair and facial cues section of the Todd Manning article. After hours had passed, I decided that there should be a better image showcasing Lexa's wardrobe; so I uploaded File:Lexa wardrobe.jpg, and that is the image currently in the section. - I uploaded the file at 08:22, 20 September 2016, which is a minute before your initial post above. And it's clear that I had been working on the file before that upload. You can talk of convenient as much as you want to, but I know what I am doing (as I usually do on Wikipedia), and the previous file would not have been deleted under your rationale. Experts on Japanese copyright law have opined that this is considered an artistic work for the purposes of Japanese law and thus ineligible for Japanese FOP. However, US FOP establishes the distinction between buildings and artwork as follows: "The term building means structures that are habitable by humans and intended to be both permanent and stationary, such as houses and office buildings, and other permanent and stationary structures designed for human occupancy, including but not limited to churches, museums, gazebos, and garden pavilions." So if it qualifies as a building under US law, then {{FoP-USonly}} applies. What we need to figure out here is: Are there any overriding provisions in US law that would nonetheless make this an artwork? Because intuitively it looks awfully like a sculpture, and it's only a building on account of its habitability, but I don't see anything in US law that says otherwise. Let me preface this with the following might seem cold in lieu of the circumstances. However, this image is not really needed. The main image, also under fair use, is the most important one. The one showing the child dead. The photo of the child while he was still alive does not add any additional encyclopedic value to the article in my opinion. Therefore, it is unnecessary failing our strict non-free use policy. Specifically, WP:NFCCP #3a (minimum number of items to convey the same information) and #8 (its absence will not be detrimental to the understanding of the article). Majora (talk) 21:23, 22 September 2016 (UTC)
- Keep - Shows face of the late Alan Kurdi in a neutral context. --Jax 0677 (talk) 21:54, 22 September 2016 (UTC)
- The entire article is about his death, not his life. Don't really know why you need a smiling picture unless you think that somehow offsets the picture of his body. It really doesn't. Fair use is all about the absolute minimum number of copyrighted images that can convey the same information. Not about neutrality. Fair use photos in the name of neutrality need to have some context to them in order to fit with our fair use policy. This one doesn't seem to do that. --Majora (talk) 21:59, 22 September 2016 (UTC)
- Neutral, leaning toward support - I am torn. I added this image to show the kid's bright, optimistic life as other articles have done on events involving a sole person. Kurdi's death is unfortunate, and the infobox (corpse) image illustrates this. I previewed removing the image in the article, and I have two possibilities. On one hand, even with the image removed, readers would still understand the whole article about the kid's death despite short biography. On the other hand, the removal would obstruct readers from understanding how the kid's death tragically ended his bright, optimistic life, though WP:NOTMEMORIAL should apply in case of low-profile or non-notable people. Two front covers are included to identify the releases of this song. The images are not substantially discussed by sources, so one of images must be kept instead for identification. The 1980s live re-release is more prominent than the original (Dutch) 1972 release. The original 1970s release was uncharted; the live re-recording was charted, however. In short, the 1980s live picture sleeve should be retained; the Dutch one, deleted. George Ho (talk) 23:20, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
- The song was released in two substantially different versions. Each of the versions is discussed substantially in the article. So each of the single covers is appropriate for identication. Rlendog (talk) 14:12, 26 September 2016 (UTC)
-
- Nevertheless, Rlendog, one release is more prominent than the other. Both versions might have equal prominence, but the live re-release made the original recording more popular than the original release did. Also, the (original) single was neither charted despite overseas release nor commercially released in the US. That's what happened to I Will Remember You (Sarah McLachlan song). - I don't know, Rlendog. The consensus agreed in other venues to normally keep just one front cover of any release by the similar singer. George Ho (talk) 16:32, 26 September 2016 (UTC)
- That consensus was based on a single editor besides the nominator agreeing that it made sense to have only one of the covers shown. Hardly a broad-based consensus that can be simply applied to all other situations where there are covers to multiple versions that are discussed in the articles. 20:30, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

Please ensure "===September 26===" is at the very top of the new page so that internal page links from the main Files for discussion page (the one you're on now) work.
The page Wikipedia:Files for discussion/Today will always show today's log.
