Harold C Helgeson
Hello I am the widow of the great Geochemist, Harold C. Helgeson and since this was the anniversary of his death I was looking at all of the wonderful articles on him and I noticed that Wikipedia has reduced his article down to mere sentence!! Wh does this??? This is very upsetting to his family as he was the greatest Geochemst who ever lived and I would like to know how we can return the article to its original context.
Thanks.

- The article was reduced to its current size after the removal of copyrighted text. Wikipedia cannot accept text that was copied and pasted from another site due to copyright law. Wikipedia articles must be written in your own words and must be summaries of what has been published in sources that have editorial oversight and a history of fact checking. I'm sorry but we are unable to restore the article to its previous state as the material has been permanently removed from the history. --Majora (talk) 02:44, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

HowTo? smarter searches within Wiki a'la Google with markup or Boolean logic?
My experience is that it is possible to do "dumb", "smart", and "smarter" searches with Google at the browser input field, with some "mark-up" with quotes and/or double-quotes and/or brackets to narrow the search. That would be something like regular expressions.
Is that possible within Wikipedia?
Welcome to the Wikipedia Help desk!
- This page is only for questions about using Wikipedia, not for general knowledge questions. If you have any factual questions, please use the search box or post them on the Reference desk.
- Before posting here, please read/search the FAQ and see if you can find the answer to your question there.
- Please give the exact title or URL of any page you want help with.
- If possible, please be specific in your question rather than general and link to any page or article your question involves, or at least tell us the title of the page.
In the above "Welcome to Wikipedia Help Desk!" that I can see during question creation, suppose I want to find only the two singular instances of "question", and exclude the three instances of plural "questions".
Or suppose in a very long Wiki article, I would like exact matches on the phrase "your question" rather than "your questions".
My impression is that this can be done with Google if you know what you are doing, and I haven't found a way to do the [admittedly contrived] search within Wiki.
Thanks! Lynn (talk) 06:25, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
- Google provides excellent search facilities. Wikipedia provides rather poor search facilities. This is unlikely to change any time soon. So, if you want to do any non-trivial search within Wikipedia, just use Google, and be thankful that they provide this excellent service for free. Maproom (talk) 08:01, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
- @L d allan: Actually, Wikipedia does indeed have regex searching, as well as various other Wikipedia-specific searching tools: see Help:Searching or, for more detail, see mw:Help:CirrusSearch. Regex, non-stemming searches (match only "questions" rather than "question") and I believe boolean operators are all possible. — crh 23 (Talk) 10:38, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
Extreme and persistent page vandalism
I have an issue and I don't know where to turn. I am really new to Wikipedia and am here to help a friend. At this point, my Wiki skills are somewhere between *zombie* and *newbie*. There is a living person I know whose page was set up by an unrelated party. That party has used that page to post defamatory content about the living person. I came in and edited it a few times to correct the problem, but now the unrelated party has locked me out and this rogue page is creating a lot of trouble. The content clearly violates any precept of the NPOV as Wikipedia governance suggests.
My question - What recourse do we have? The living person in question here only became aware of his own Wiki page a couple of months ago. The content is derogatory, defaming, hurtful and just plain inaccurate.
Help would be greatly appreciated.
ManjiroX (talk) 12:58, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
- It would be helpful if you'd provide a link to the page you mention. Jarkeld (talk) 13:00, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
- @ManjiroX: You don't have any edits in your account in the Wikipedia mainspace, so it's really hard to give good guidance on what you can do. Please tell us what page you are referring to. I could suggest WP:RFPP but I don't know if that's the right step at this point. Dismas|(talk) 16:04, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
-
- Hello, ManjiroX. Given that you seem to be talking about the page of a person you know. you have a Conflict of interest, and need to be very cautious about editing the page at all. However, the policy on Biographies of living persons says that you may (in fact, should) "Remove contentious material that is unsourced or poorly sourced". So, if the material your friend objects to is unsourced, then you may certainly remove it, and they should not be reinserting it: in that case, it is probably appropriate to report the issue on the BLPN - follow the instructions at the top. However, if the material they are adding is cited to reliable sources, then you should not remove it, even if the subject objects to it. As Dismas says, we can help you better if you tell us which article you are talking about. --ColinFine (talk) 21:39, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

if I create a username can I keep/merge my editing history/talk page into that? or will it all have to start over?68.48.241.158 (talk) 16:31, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
- You will have to start over. However, you can put a link on your new user page to your old contributions page. You can move your talk page over though. --Majora (talk) 16:35, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
- alright I'll have to think about it then..68.48.241.158 (talk) 16:40, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
- Just to point out, there are a few reasons why you should create an account. See WP:BENEFITS for those. It is completely up to you however. --Majora (talk) 16:45, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
- alright I'll have to think about it then..68.48.241.158 (talk) 16:40, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
I'd like to be able to keep my editing history as think this could be beneficial for a few reasons...what's the general philosophy behind not being able to move it over to a username? does it create technical problems? what's the difference between merging a talk page seamlessly vs merging an edit history seamlessly (if one can indeed seamlessly merge a talk page)??68.48.241.158 (talk) 18:09, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
- I'd assume it's a technical issue. If a registered user changes their username, the username will be changed in edit histories as well (ie. the user's edit histories are merged). But IP users without an account are a bit different. We always need IP contribution pages reserved to record edits made by you if you log out, or by others using your IP address while not logged in. That's why I don't imagine it's possible to merge IP users' contributions. You can always link back to your IP editing history: "my contributions when I did not have an account". – Finnusertop (talk ⋅ contribs) 18:15, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
- okay, thanks, makes sense..unless they could keep the IP history in place and that could be potentially added to by unlogged in...and copy paste the same history into my new username account...but they are probably just not set up to do this so...68.48.241.158 (talk) 18:22, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
You should understand that IPs are often reassigned. This means your IP talk page can be given to someone else in the future. My advice would be to make an account, then copy/paste the talk page history and put a link to where you got it in your edit summary. HighInBC 18:25, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
yes, if someone can weigh in on what the specific steps would be in terms of A. create an account (just do that normally?) B. make my current talk page my new talk page (if this can really be done)..C. and then I guess I could only link to my current edit history on my new (same) talk page? (I'm not sure about all this anyway, leaning toward the status quo)..68.48.241.158 (talk) 19:08, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
- Step 1: Create an account. Step 2: Put {{Userbox/IP Editor}} or something similar on your new user page. Step 3: Have someone who has the ability to move pages move your IP talk page to your new user talk page. Step 4: Blank the old IP user talk page. There is no need for suppressredirect as the page can stay created but blanked. Step 5: Enjoy your new account. --Majora (talk) 19:25, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
- okay, thank you..perhaps it's something I'll do..idk..68.48.241.158 (talk) 19:46, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
- I was suggesting suppress redirect as the IP could potentially change owner in the future, and it is undesirable for a future user of that IP to appear to be the same person as the current user, — crh 23 (Talk) 20:07, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

How do I go about proposing an article rename?
- The article Hangang Bridge bombing I believe should be renamed to Hangang Bridge demolition (1950). What board would I need to visit to propose this. Regards, Irondome (talk) 22:42, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

Katrina Mathers
Do we need to highlight reasons to you as to why this overwhelmingly autobiographical page should be subjected to "Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion" ?
A search on the internet clearly raises alarms regarding the complete lack of Notability of Katrina Mathers.
We have regularly seen Wikipedia pages set up to promote one's own business - these pages have always been removed very quickly.
We are concerned when autobiographical pages such as Katrina Mathers are created: Wikipedia's integrity suffers a great deal as I am sure you are aware.
Thanks and please place these concerns on the Talk page of Katrina Mathers page - I am unable to do so Srbernadette (talk) 23:37, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

Help with Original Research
I'm trying to get my head around how to identify 'original research' in the non-obvious cases. In strolling through articles with OR tags, I ran across [Little Heath, Coventry]. Could someone please look at this page and tell me what the original research here is (if any)? Thanks Leschnei (talk) 23:57, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
- Little Heath, Coventry is the convenience link. Nyttend (talk) 00:06, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
- The third paragraph of Little Heath, Coventry appears to be possible WP:OR, including the assertion that the church hall is used for Brownie meetings. It needs sourcing to WP:RS Cheers, Irondome (talk) 00:11, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
- I don't see anything that's likely to be original research. Most of it describes the current village, and it's stuff that could be found in the local telephone directory or Ordnance Survey map. The only real exceptions to that are the groups using the church hall (that can probably be found in some Guiding publication) and the construction period for the terraced houses, and I'm sure that such a general statement as this would be sourceable from something that's been reliably published. The real problem is the thorough lack of citations. Nyttend (talk) 00:15, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
- Agree with Nyttend on the above. It badly needs sources. Irondome (talk) 00:18, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, I noticed the lack of sources. I just wasn't sure that mentioning Brownie meetings warranted an OR tag. I suppose details like that could be added by someone living in the town without reference to any source at all which, of course, would not be good.
- Agree with Nyttend on the above. It badly needs sources. Irondome (talk) 00:18, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

9th infantry Division in Vietnam
The article states accurately that the 9th INF Division was under control in the 3rd Corps area, but the focus is only on the 2nd brigade operating in the Delta with the Mobile Riverine forces in the 4th Corps area! Headquarters was in 3 Corps located at BearCat in Bien Hoa province/ Long Thanh District. There is no reference to this information or the majority of operations the 9th conducted within 3rd Corps. I was an ARVN infantry advisor with MAC-V in Long Thanh District from June 1968 - May 1969. For the first part of my tour, we had a platoon of the 9th infantry stationed with us in our compound and during a major attack on our District Headquarters, the 9th Infantry sent relief units to our aid from Bearcat in October 1968. Later in my tour, the 9th relocated to Dong Tam in the Delta/4th Corps. They were replaced in Bearcat by the Thai Army. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.233.207.200 (talk) 19:33, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
- Hello, and thanks for your suggestion. Wikipedia's policy is that only information which has been reliably published somewhere may be put into articles, (because otherwise a reader has no way of verifying whether it is correct). If you have a published source for the information you want to add, please feel free to edit the article, or to suggest the edit on the article's talk page; but I'm afraid that if the information is only from your personal knowledge (or from unpublished records) then Wikipedia cannot accept it. Please see Verifiability for more information. --ColinFine (talk) 15:07, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

Adding to Discography
Sorry if this is a duplicate. I am new here. I am wanting to add to the graph on an artist's discography to include the American Top 40 along with the other charts on artists pages. Can this be done, and if so, how? Thank you Sdharri73 (talk) 21:59, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Sdharri73: Maybe I'm the only one but I find your question a little confusing. Do you want to edit an article for a single artist? Or the article for many artists? Or create a template which will appear on many artist's articles? Dismas|(talk) 22:23, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
Sorry if it is confusing, I have never used this template or help desk before. I am wanting to start a new section for AT40 music on many artists discography pages. For instance, on this page.....https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Posner_discography....On the "Singles as Lead Artist" section, I want to add another US section, this one being Top 40 next to the Billboard one, so it would say US Top 40 and have number two for "A Pill In Ibezia", next to the one that says 4 for US (which is the Billboard peak number). This is under the Peak Chart Positions on that page. Does that make sense? Thanks for your help. Sdharri73 (talk) 22:49, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
- So this is about Mike Posner discography#As_lead_artist, and you want to add a new column to the table? Maproom (talk) 06:17, 31 May 2016 (UTC).
Capitalising a page name - Orix = ORIX
Hi Team
The ORIX brand should be capitalized but is often written " Orix" incorrectly, I've updated ORIX in the content, but can't find how to update the actual "Orix" page name.
Any tips?
Thank you.

Bot archive loss
It seems a bot-created archive got lost due to some wrong coding on Talk:Brainwashed (George Harrison album). As you can see here, the talkpage consisted of three entries (one of them actually a factual question regarding the article from 2006 that never got answered) when the bot came rolling around with this edit in 2013. The result is that the talkpage is empty now (except for the Beatle box at the top and a new bot entry from 2016), and the archive link is red, pointing at nothing. --79.242.222.168 (talk) 04:39, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

- I'm not quite sure how a bot would detect all redlinks to archive pages, although a stab at some common patterns doesn't seem impossible. I think there's a way to list all redlinks (see, for example, Special:WantedPages), and you might just be able to search such a list for anything with "/archive" in the name. You might consider proposing this at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals). Rwessel (talk) 06:30, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

Is there a way to view another user's sandbox? Does this require a user to share his or her sandbox somehow? — Preceding unsigned comment added by AugusteBlanqui (talk • contribs) 08:19, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, there is a way. And no special actions are needed. You just need to know (or guess, or investigate) what the name of the sandbox is. For example if you go to the search box and type User:CiaPan/ the box will expand a drop-list suggesting three existing pages:
- User:CiaPan/sandbox
- User:CiaPan/Sandbox
- User:CiaPan/example of autoextending table cell
- You can accept any of them and see my sandbox pages. --CiaPan (talk) 08:34, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
- You can also click on the user contributions link and scroll to the bottom of the page. There you will see a link to "subpages" which will show you all the pages in a users space. - Hello, Baltistani. You will sometimes be able to avoid having to search, by going to the referenced English article, and seeing if it already has an Interwiki link to an Urdu article; but I don't think there's any shortcut to finding that and replacing the text. And where the article isn't already linked to an Urdu article, I don't think there's anything you can do but search. --ColinFine (talk) 18:48, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

- Hello, IP user. Wikipedia doesn't work like most resources you're probably familiar with: anybody can edit an article. But "notable" has a special meaning in Wikipedia: it doesn't mean famous, or important, or influential, or heroic, or popular or anything like that. It means simply "there has been enough material published about this person to write a well-sourced article about them"; because Wikipedia articles are required to be based entirely on published material, so that a reader can in principle always check the information in an article. If you can find such sources, then there could be an article on this person, and you may add them to the article in question - or you could suggest it on the talk page of the article. Alternatively, you could ask for assistance at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history. But if there are not suitable published sources for that person, then I'm afraid Wikipedia will not take note of them and they can't be added to the article. --ColinFine (talk) 18:57, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

WRONG TITLE
Hello, I just wanted to communicate that there is wrong title in one of the article of Wikipedia.
Beant Singh was not an assassin he was a FREEDOM FIGHTER. He killed Indira because she attacked their Golden Temple without any reason so consequently she was executed. It does not make any sense to describe a Freedom Fighter as an assassin it is RIDICULOUS!!. The scope of the website is to give any type of information to there reader, but not the fake one.
So kindly I am asking to change the wrong title in the correct one
Caspio19 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Caspio19 (talk • contribs) 19:35, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Caspio19 - it appears this person took part in an assassination, and (from a quick search) we don't have any articles on people with "(Freedom fighter)" appended, possibly due to the connotations the phrase holds? I can understand your frustration, and agree somewhat that an involvement in an assassination only tentativly makes someone an "assassin" - perhaps something like "activist"? This would be a discussion ideally suited on the article's talk page -- samtar talk or stalk 20:00, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Wikipedia refers to subjects using the words that are most often applied to them. I have examined all the citations in the article Beant_Singh_(assassin). Of those which I have been able to check, I find six use the word "assassin" or "assassination", two use "killer" or "killing", one uses "martyrdom", and none use "freedom fighter". So the current title is appropriate. Maproom (talk) 20:01, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

Style questions go where?

Does it matter? —67.14.236.50 (talk) 03:11, 1 June 2016 (UTC)- You can place style questions here as the place where you posted the question is not the place to discuss particular article's style queries. - Well then: I had posted a question at WT:MOS#Are editions of major works also major works? about whether the names of special editions should be italicized. Please have a look if you are knowledgeable about grammatical matters and style guides. Thanks!
- The original question by the editor:
-
-
- If a video game has a “Game of the Year Edition,” or an album has a “Collector’s Edition,” or a movie has a “Director’s Cut” release, should the edition name be italicized as well (per MOS:T#Major works)? Is “Game of the Year Edition” considered a partial title, part of the name of the major work, for instance Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception: Game of the Year Edition? (If so, should we also say “they released a Game of the Year Edition”?) A brief internal search shows italics inconsistently applied to such labels, so some guidance would be helpful. —67.14.236.50 (talk) 15:07, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
-
-
- My answer to this would be, that it depends on the actual name of the game. If the company has released it with the full name of the edition being "Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception: Game of the Year Edition", then italicise the full name including the Game of the Year Edition part. At the same time, do note that many a time, consensus on the article's talk page can reach a different conclusion, in which case you should follow the reached consensus. Xender Lourdes (talk) 05:46, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
- I don’t think that quite works. From a quick internal search, I find:
- Call of Duty 2 does not italicize “Special Edition” or “Game of the Year Edition,” and doesn’t even capitalize “a collector’s edition” or “the mobile version” (the latter of which is indisputably a different game).
- The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind italicizes “Game of the Year Edition” alone and both with and without a preceding colon, but not “Special Edition Soundtrack.”
- Batman: Arkham Asylum has “Game of the Year edition” roman with a small E, but italicizes “a Collector’s Edition.”
- When, if ever, should an edition name be considered part of the name proper, and when should it not? It sounds like your answer is always. The Lord of the Rings Extended Edition? Alan Wake Demo? —67.14.236.50 (talk) 12:15, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
- I don’t think that quite works. From a quick internal search, I find:
I’ve posted again at WT:MOS to ask about adding guidance on this to MOS:T. Personally, I’d advise treating any “edition” label as not a part of the work title proper unless there isn’t any doubt that it is: the Payday 2 demo, Doom collector’s edition, but Dead Island Definitive Edition or Resident Evil HD Remaster. Same goes for EP and LP music releases, movies, books, etc. It sounds like Xender would have us take whatever they put on the box and use it as the full title. I’m fine with however the consensus goes, as long as we have some kind of decision. Wondering if I should start an RFC. —67.14.236.50 (talk) 23:02, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
-
- You can post at WT:MOS (as you have) for a guidance to be included in the current manual. My initial suggestion is actually the same as your statement above. I too would prefer that the additional "2nd edition" etc should be italicised only if the so titled "2nd edition" etc is clearly included as the name of the particular release. It's a tough call but, and should be finally taken on the talk pages of respective articles. The thing to keep in mind is that whichever way the article decides – like in the case of citing sources where you can use any style of citing you wish in an article – you should maintain consistency within the particular article. It's not necessary that in such cases – where individual cases of naming of video games may differ – that we have the same format followed across Wikipedia. "I Hate Everything" page deleted. Please restore the page.
The page for YouTuber "I Hate Everything" has been deleted for some reason. Previous users have cited lack of press coverage of any kind as a reason why it was deleted. However, the Nostalgia Critic of Channel Awesome cited the channel when'I Hate Everything" noted flaws in YouTube's copyright system. The Wikipedia page cited a controversy the channel was victim of. It feels like someone deleted the page to withhold useful information to the public regarding freedom of speech. Please do something about this problem. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Internet Informant (talk • contribs) 03:10, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

If you have, that would help. —67.14.236.50 (talk) 03:16, 1 June 2016 (UTC)- @Internet Informant: you can see why it was deleted here. Please note that an occasional cite by a third party here or there is not significant coverage. Furthermore, I'm not convinced that Nostalgia Critic of Channel Awesome is a reliable source - he does not represent a news organization or publishing house that would be known for accurate information and high journalistic standards. Lastly, Wikipedia is not a place for all kinds of information – no matter how useful or on how important topics (like the freedom of speech). Rather, it's a place for a specific kind of information: encyclopedic information about notable subjects. – Finnusertop (talk ⋅ contribs) 03:19, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

Missing equation images
All pages suddenly missing equation images. SVG in background does not work in all browsers - does not work in last secure version of Firefox ("secure" is such version, that has got Firefox.js in plain file available for security editing... newer versions of Firefox cannot be secured, because Firefox.js with meddle-snoop configuration is packed inside Omni.ja file. Chrome and IE are totally unsecure, because cannot switch off javascript). The math is missing in older version of IE also...
<math> is not rendered, <meta> with "background: url()" is not rendered either. The pages without equations are crippled.
Not sure, how long is that, in mid-april it worked - there was <img> with TeX in "alt" attribute. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.98.159.114 (talk) 08:45, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

And if you wish to work on them, do please work freely; this is just Wikipedia, not a financial payment gateway. Do write back if you need some help. Xender Lourdes (talk) 11:48, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

- No sorry, Chrome is not secure and I may not use it. "Latest" does not mean "Best", almost never... There is (or was) a golden internet rule, that USER chooses his software, not the content provider! The pages, saved to MHT (mime html) format could be displayed in very old email clients too, they could be packed to CHM archives, which are opened in IE, that may be quite old... It all worked fine until this April-May, when suddenly stopped appearing PNG equations, using <math> instead... Forcing unsecure browser (among many else falsely blocking "undesired" pages, also with privacy issues etc...) and of a single software provider to internet users this way by Wikipedia would be really ugly... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.98.159.114 (talk) 12:50, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

Might I suggest you post your query to Wikipedia:Reference desk/Computing? They might be able to assist the issue further. Thanks. Xender Lourdes (talk) 02:55, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

- It depends, what you mean by "older" version. It does not work in Firefox 3.0 and IE 6.0, it does not work in Opera 9.01, it does not work in Thunderbird 2.0 (if saved to MHT (mime html + all required files) by MAFF and thunderbird configured to see attachments inline), it would not work, if packed to CHM archive file... Wikipedia:Reference desk/Computing seems to be for asking general computing questions...? The question is not, how I display <math>, but how to make wikipedia use PNG for equations (as it did for many years until last month) and not <math> tags...! 79.98.159.114 (talk) 14:56, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

Unsure of where to post this. Apologies if it's in the wrong spot. The redirect Thimble Theater properly points to the article Popeye, as it was is the strip where Popeye originated. Being flagged for advertising
I've been editing a few pages by adding content about new technology in the field. The problem is it keeps getting removed for advertising. At first I made the mistake of using a company site for a source but since I used publications it still gets removed. How can I explain the new technology and not come off as selling it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Morrow363 (talk • contribs) 13:06, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
- @Morrow363: The tone of this addition does sound a little like you're trying to sell something - mixed with the inclusion of a link to http://www.aquisense.com/ (a supplier of UV Germicidal products) as a reference would lead many editors to belive you were attempting to promote the company. Please don't start an edit war by repeatedly reverting other editors - as Ronz stated "if there's something here that doesn't violate NOT, it needs to be rewritten from independent sources" -- samtar talk or stalk 13:12, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

COI blocks
I notice a lot of people getting blocked for COI/promotion...it seems a lot of the articles they try to create are indeed about non-notable subjects (small companies they own/are closely involved in) so the articles wouldn't pass for notability...I'm wondering about subjects (companies/whatever) that are indeed notable but it would be highly unlikely anyone who doesn't have a COI would create an article about them...consider a medium-sized law firm with maybe 100 partners...a firm like this that's been around for any period of time would almost certainly pass for notability but it's probably unlikely anyone without a COI would have any interest in creating an article about it...this is just a random example..there are probably better examples...so are there at least theoretically many notable subjects that will never have articles because of this? Or in practice would the technical COI likely fly under the radar?....general input please...68.48.241.158 (talk) 14:24, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
- I am not sure what the question is. Conflict of interest blocks, which are normally paid editing blocks (a more specific and more serious kind of COI block) are not based on the notability of the subjects of the articles that they submit. Editors do not get blocked for submitting articles on nonnotable subjects (except for very rare situations, such as repeatedly submitting the same article after it was deleted). Editors do get blocked for failure to declare that they are paid editors. That is done regardless of whether the subject is notable or not notable. As to your comment that many theoretically notable subjects will never have articles because of lack of interest, I disagree. Out of hundreds of millions of Anglophone writers, any of whom can create an account (why don't you?), there is likely to be one person who is interested in a notable topic. I don't know if that was your question. However, conflict of interest blocks are not based on the notability or lack thereof of subjects. Robert McClenon (talk) 14:46, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
- there are a lot of blocks for promotion/coi..the promotion seems to be the primary reason for the block but the coi is usually referenced too in the block etc (the two ideas seem to be highly intertwined in the blocks)...what about my example above about the law firm...would it be disallowable for a partner in that firm to write a Wikipedia article about the firm (that passed for notability and for non-pov article content etc)? or would the article have to simply not exist because he wrote it? (I'm assuming in practice for a article topic like that the coi would fly under the radar anyway)..68.48.241.158 (talk) 14:57, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

- Can you link to an account that has been blocked where COI was referenced so we can look at what you are talking about? It is not against the rules for someone with a COI to create an article. It is highly discouraged but not prohibited. It is against the rules to get paid to create articles without declaring that you are a paid editor. As long as paid editors follow the rules they can create articles about something where they are paid to do it. So in your example, if a partner or more likely an intern created the article on behalf of the firm and they are getting paid to do it, they should declare their COI and that they are paid to create the article. They should not get blocked if they follow the rules. -- GB fan 15:07, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

- The issue isn't COI per se. If, however, that someone thinks we're free ad space instead of an encyclopedia, their conflict of interest is far too strong to write neutrally about their chosen topic, and Wikipedia has no use for their contributions. Would anybody without a conflict of interest think that "Get discovered and sell your [xyz]. Earn money doing what you love." is appropriate content for an encyclopedia article about a company? I doubt that. Huon (talk) 06:53, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
Image array
I am working on the aromatization article and would like to include a block of four images as follows:
- Column 1: File:ADN animation.gif
- Column 2: File:DNA intercalation.svg above File:DNA intercalation2.jpg (adjusted so they are each of the same width)
- Column 3: File:Benzopyrene DNA adduct 1JDG.png
Each column will be the same height, and a single caption below to describe all four images. I have been experimenting a bit with the multiple image template, but am still learning. Is there a template to do what I am describing? Thanks. EdChem (talk) 15:37, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

- This error means that you have added a reference name without actually assigning that name to a reference. At the first instance of the reference, you should input <ref name=XXX>details of the ref</ref>. Then when you need to use the same reference you only need to input <ref name=XXX/>. Eagleash (talk) 15:52, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
- In this case there seems to be only one instance of the ref being used (after 'languages' at the top of the page). Write the full ref as a normal ref between the ref tags (<ref></ref>) and the error should disappear. Eagleash (talk) 15:56, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

Ghost (Fake) Artists Lists
I am sorry if this question was already discussed. I am new in WP editing/monitoring and so far didn't find it.
Recently I came across the issue of 'ghost' artist - name of allegedly dead, but actually never existed people. In different areas it may be done for different purposes. EG in art - for creating a record with sales on different auctions (like eBay) to find later in your backyard hundreds of works on this non-existent artist. I came across several names. One of them is Nicholas Kalmakoff. Here I explain why this artist is an obvious scam
As I understand, Nicholas Kalmakoff page was deleted/removed several times from English Wikipedia, but Swedish page still exist.
Would it be reasonable to create Nicholas Kalmakoff page with indication that the name is a fake used in various scams? What about lists of other ghosts? Any discussions about suspicious/never existed people. — Preceding unsigned comment added by VladKSF (talk • contribs) 15:57, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
- The question is: can you find multiple independent reliable (WP:RS) references to establish notability of the non-existence? RJFJR (talk) 16:20, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
VladKSF (talk) 09:51, 2 June 2016 (UTC)Thank you very much, RJFJR! I think that I can. I didn't finish yet searching all French and Estonian records almost all of them including immigration. neither one of them contains the name of Kalmakoff. Though his name is used by Russian mafia for many years, all the articles are repeating same text word by word. It is said that this artist lived 30 years in Italy, than a few years in Russia, after that Estonia and Franjce. I do not want to put my name under something as it was mentioned by inattentive editors. I just wanted to alert about scam which is in process. I am sorry for not being clear in the last discussion. I alluded to Russian names from the site which I do not want to mention. Among other things I discovered using edited photos from Jewish museum Yad-Vashem for creating fake Antique Nazi artifacts.

- Forum shopping to another venue because you didn't like the answer you got the first time is not going to change the answer. Wikipedia only documents material which has already been documented in reliable sources (which your own blog is not), so unless you can find mention of this scam in academic publications or the mainstream press, we're not going to mention him. Incidentally, Nicholas Kalmakoff page was deleted/removed several times from English Wikipedia is complete nonsense; at no point have we ever had a page by this title. ‑ Iridescent 16:27, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
VladKSF (talk) 09:51, 2 June 2016 (UTC)Please do not answer about things I don't ask. I do not want to write anything anywhere, I just alert people about scam, and I know that the name of Kalmakoff was used by Russian mafia in different scams. I know it from my old journalistic contacts. Dear Iridescent, You are constantly projecting on me something I am not. I was a journalist in popular newspaper before the time of Internet. Now, I am quite old and it is not my intention to put name under anything whatsoever. If you want to respond, please for the God sake, please read attentively what you are responding on. - Incidentally, dropping Nikolai Kalmakov (the more typical way to Anglicise a Russian name in this form) into Google brings up multiple coverage of this man in reliable sources across a span of decades, so unless this conspiracy has been ongoing for a century and involves multiple art historians across multiple continents, the simplest explanation is that you're wrong. ‑ Iridescent 16:39, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

I didn't get any answer first time, and it was not in forum, I just alerted moderators. But they wrote that it is to much to read in info I provided, so I just concentrated on one particular person. If you really respect Wikipedia, you should read before writing an answer. I provided a link to my article where I have briefly explained everything. if it takes too much to follow the link, I post it here, below. Than you would probably not teach me how to Anglicise Russian names, because my father participated in decision-making process of changing -off ending to -ov. -off was common in the age when second language in Russia was French. HOWEVER names of Russian emigrants who left earlier and adopted -off -eff for their new documents are spelled in the old way eg. Leontief, Tarasoff, Smirnoff... Nobody, (except probably you) will write Tarasov case, because the name is Tarasoff. Regarding your links I can show you why they are fake. You can, actually see it yourself if you will make some research. The fact that Russian mafia invested a lot of money in is one of the reasons why I write about it. Their goal is to reach million dollar sales for their "artists", so they hire top level professionals to incorporate their info everywhere. They even go that far to change text of the poem (though not the most known) of Russian poet Игорь Северянин.
And here is the text of my article.

Kalmakoff scam: art forgeries, ghost artists and manipulation of the past. First time I came across the name Nicholas Kalmaloff, ascribed to never existed artist, after buying fake Antique postcards on eBay. I started googling names on the cards and found a card made after image belonging to Jewish Museum of Catastrophe, Yad-Vashem. The image was very slightly modified and ascribed to some non-existing German photo artist. Many links of artist’s names directed on metropostcard.com where I found an amazing masterpiece of human ignorance — biography of another “ghost” artist — Nicholas Kalmakoff. Spelling of the name Kalmakoff made me feel something similar that native speaker of English would feel looking on the name Jhon Smiht. “Kal” is sh*t in Russian, “mak” could be the root of verb “makat” — to put in. So the name Kalmakoff sounds very special. Common Russian family name is KOlmalov, not Kalmakoff. While the endings of Russian last names changed their spelling form -off to -ov (common way of spelling now), never ever in history O could have written as A. Research with google and other Internet search engines confirmed my feeling that there are no people named Kalmakoff in Russia. However, this last name happened to be common among Aleuts of Alaska where first European colonizers were Russians. Apparently, initially Nicholas Kalmakoff (or at least his name) was created by the native speaker of English who mistakenly took Aleutian name for Russian. Reading the biography of an “artist” on metropostcard.com was truly unique experience. It was amazing to see how creators of Kalmakoff’s image who made by shill bidding million dollar auction sales for Kalmakoff’s art were not just ignorant of very basic historic realities. They were I would say aggressively illiterate, showing tones of contempt to any knowledge about the world outside regulations of online auctions. In the first sentence of biography it was said that Italian Russian artist Kalmakoff was son of Russian general and Italian woman who was born and grew up in the town of Nervi in Italy. The existence of Nervi was probably only piece of correct factual information in this sentence. However, in 1873 Nervi was a remote fishermen village, not an upscale resort on Italian Riviera, favourite destination of post-Soviet nouveau-riches where they regularly organize days of Russian culture. What kind of Italian woman supposedly was Kalmakoff’s mother? Remember that 19th century was still the age of slavery. If she was a peasant, she would have been considered sub-human by Russian aristocrat, so baby Kalmakoff had no chance of having such parents officially. If she were of noble birth, Italian aristocrat — 19th century Russian nobles didn’t know the word divorce. It was virtually non-existing. In that case, what was the family of Russian aristocrat doing in fishermen village in Italy. I will stop examining Kalmakoff’s bio not to be boring, but in reality it goes on and on having at least one anachronism in each and every sentence. Reading it is like getting information about first gold seekers in 19th century Alaska entertaining themselves by watching TV in their RVs. Believe me, as a former teacher of history I would commit suicide if one of my students wrote such an essay. Just one more thing from bio, which I wanted to mention is that after coming to St.Petersburg, Russia at the age of 30 to study at the Imperial School of Law (there was no such thing in St. Petersburg in 1900) Kalmakoff joint the Skoptsy sect. Well, in 19th century people usually didn’t start their career and go to school at the age of 30, but never mind. Skoptsy was tiny, boorish, crazy sect initiation to which was ritual castration. what did Russian aristocrat had to do with it? Logically, it is absolutely clear why counterfeiters put skopsty in Kalmakov’s bio. This was the way of justification ascribing to Kalmakoff erotic and sexual imagery. As they said it themselves, ritual celibacy of skopsty subconsciously turned Kalmakoff to erotism. Apparently, in their ignorance authors of the bio didn’t find better justification for Kalmakoff’s erotism. It all could have been just funny if not for reaction of Russian internet on the appearance of Kalmakoff. Almost nobody dared to question introduction of the new artist, and if somebody did, it caused a response in the best traditions of Goebbels’ propaganda: if somebody doubts “the truth”, repeat it thousand times for them. Times when somebody was not 100% sure in existence of the new classic of the Russian art coincided with the appearance of new articles about Kalmakoff and dozens of the newfound masterpieces (by the way, all created in different styles). Suddenly the world became very flexible — poems of Russian classics were changed to incorporate the mentioning of Kalmakoff, books about classic appeared in the library of Stanford university and on Amazon. Partially the silence of Russian experts was explainable — every word against the ruling party could resulted in hundred new evidences of Kalmakoff, disappearance of books from archives, so it totally makes sense to remain silent otherwise the number of newfound works of Kalmakoff would exceed that of all other Russian artists together. I wrote this thoughts based on material which is closer to me and easier to explain, but unfortunately phenomena of counterfeit in art is not limited to Russia. Browsing fake images and names I meet similar ghost assigned to every land, so that after creating million dollars sales for the ghosts authors of the scam could come with hundreds of works to put money on their bank accounts. By nature I am very quite person and probably would not mind new edition of the art world if it were done with at least minimal degree of knowledge and professionalism. But when bunch of gangsters comes forward with their stolen billions and lack of knowledge of the grammar of any human language whatsoever; sorry I am against. Keep the world at least somewhat literate. |
- And to repeat what I've already told you, this is a well-documented artist who's been referenced in books going back decades. Unless you have some actual evidence that multiple academic publishers in multiple countries have been conspiring for decades to falsify history, Wikipedia is not going to host an article on your conspiracy theory. ‑ Iridescent 20:05, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
Please do not tell me about multiple links and books going decades away. Please provide ONE, just ONE article from scholarly peer reviewed academic source (I hope that you know what it is) Regarding any of mentioning from google search you may also see that there is something wrong. There are no books about Kalamkoff. If you mean one on sale in Amazon - you are welcome to try to buy it. By the way, I need to alert Amazon. — Preceding unsigned comment added by VladKSF (talk • contribs) 20:20, 1 June 2016 (UTC) And by the way, here is the report of speed deletion of one of the Kalmakoff drafts. http://speedydeletion.wikia.com/wiki/Draft:Nicholas_Kalmakoff For some reason there is no log. — Preceding unsigned comment added by VladKSF (talk • contribs) 22:48, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

Does use of Template:Current attract more editor attention, making it easier for articles to develop faster?
Example: The well-known EgyptAir_Flight_804 has had a lot of coverage recently, but soon after that, there was also Korean_Air_Flight_2708.
I'm wondering if one reason the latter event has less coverage might be because it did not use the {{current}} template. (I know it was a much smaller event, but I'm also curious if the template can affect anything.)
Question: Would adding the {{current}} template somehow help attract more attention from editors to help articles develop more? Thanks~:) Zeniff (talk) 22:39, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
- Probably the biggest thing is that everyone survived that incident. Dismas|(talk) 23:20, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
- That seems dark Dismas.... I would think that coverage depends on the scope and depth of the incident (one such scope would be mortalities). -- The Voidwalker Discuss 01:06, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
- I calls 'em like I sees 'em! I find it amusing that you, The Voidwalker, accuse me of being dark and then point out the very same thing that I was pointing out: the lack of mortalities. Dismas|(talk) 04:55, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
- Well, it is dark, but it is what it is. However, I was trying to use a more general statement for which can be applied to more than just the one example. -- The Voidwalker Discuss 12:20, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

- Sorry, I think I sounded too specific by using that example. I mainly meant to ask about Template:Current in general. I mean, does the template itself help to attract editors in some way, maybe in some similar ways as the Main_Page or Watchlist do by showing recently-edited articles? I hope that makes sense? o.o? (As for the earlier example, I was only considering the template on there if a template like that can be used to attract more editors to help it develop, which is what made me wonder about the template in general) Zeniff (talk) 01:28, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

- To try to answer your question... I'm going to say that we probably can't answer your question. Not definitively. In order to see really test it out, we'd need two articles of relatively the same importance and put the tag on just one of them. You could perhaps go into the history and count edits to various current event type articles both before and after the tag was applied. But again, there are a lot of outside factors to consider such as the even being publicized in the news. Dismas|(talk) 04:58, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

Watchlist changes
Where do the changes to the watchlist take place? I've noticed in the past week or so that there's been a couple of changes that have since been reverted as to how the watchlist is displayed. Is there a forum where those changes are discussed? Thanks. Air.light (talk) 06:48, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

Can we Create a Wikipedia page For Normal Person
Hello, I am Shahzad Ahmed, I want to create a new Article on Wikipedia. I am PHP Developer and I got some achievement. But I am not a famous Person. Can I Create an Article on Wikipedia. Actually I want the Give the me My Information. So Please give the Advice for this and Tell me Is it Possible. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shahjadahmad (talk • contribs) 08:23, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Shahjadahmad - Wikipedia is not a social media site like facebook, we only have articles on notable people, Click the word "notable" for an explanation.
Being "notable" is almost, but not quite, the same as being "famous". Unless someone has received significant coverage in reliable sources that totally independent of them, they do not qualify for an article.
Furthermore, even if they are notable, people should not write their own autobiographies, please see Wikipedia:Autobiography for the reasons why. - Arjayay (talk) 08:50, 2 June 2016 (UTC)- the exception being if you're somehow an academic...the notability guidelines for academics are far too inclusive imo and almost all of them are written by the people themselves or people very close to them...68.48.241.158 (talk) 12:21, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
Please help
I used the wrong template in my recent edit to the Mary Boleyn page - see two queeries above. The citation is from a website, as opposed to a book, and I got it wrong. Please leave the quote in. Thanks 101.189.0.102 (talk) 09:01, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

I hope I am not being annoying. Please help me. My recent citation, number one, on thr above page used the wrong template. The reference was from a famous UK website, not a book. Please alter ref. Number 1 accordingly. Thanks so much. 101.189.0.102 (talk) 11:50, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
Automated merge tool (+ policy question about multiple merge proposals)
I am a somewhat regular editor, but I have little experience with mergers.
At page patrol I came across this page which I merged and redirected to Far East Broadcasting Company following WP:SMERGE before realizing that multiple similar articles were created (e.g. DZFE, DZAS, etc.), which could plausibly be all merged and redirected to the FEBC page. I suppose that, when in doubt about the merge being appropriate, one should tag every affected page of the "bundled" merge proposal with Template:Merge to and place the discussion on the target page (is that correct?).
My main question is about the technical workings of all that. Copying Template:Merge to on all potentially affected pages would be tedious (compared with WP:BUNDLE for AfD) but more to the point, WP:SMERGE is made of 9 steps, some of which being quite tedious to accomplish for a human but trivial for a computer (fetching up diff and rev numbers). It would really be a hassle to do this for 20+ pages. Is there any automated tool out there to perform a merge?

- We don't use html, we use Wikipedia markup language. To add a hyperlink to another Wikipedia article, put its name in double square brackests, like this [[dog]], which produces dog.
- There are lists of articles which have been requested but not created, here. But I see you are quite new to Wikipedia. Creating new articles is one of the most difficult things you could choose to do. It might be better to start with easier things, such as correcting spelling and grammar, making paragraphs clearer, adding citations for facts which need them, and adding new material to existing articles.
- Wikipedia is the "encyclopedia which anyone can edit". If something can be awarded, it can be copied.
- If you do good work, another editor may award you a "barnstar". But there's nothing official about these, and nothing really to stop a user awarding banstars to themselves.
- You should sign your posts with four tildes, like this ~~~~.

Page Disappearance
I wanted to inquire why the page for "The Rose of Paracelsus: On Secrets & Sacraments" has been removed. I am a researcher and copy editor on the title, working on the author's behalf. I understand there is an added hurdle of it being self-published, but as that warning appeared at the top of the page from the start and had since been removed, I thought we were good to continue with improving and expanding the content of the page, a task we were in the middle of doing.
Thank you.

- Here is the most recent state of the article, before it was replaced by a redirect, earlier today. It had no citations of independent sources to demontrate its notability, which articles require. If the book was, as you say, self-published, it seems unlikely that any such sources will exist. Maproom (talk) 15:22, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
- Given your statement above, you have a clear conflict of interest, so should not be editing that article, Please read and follow our guidance on COI editing here. Furthermore, if you are being paid for editing any page, either directly, or as part of your salary/stipend, you are also in contravention of our terms of use, as you have not declared this on your User Page - please read and comply with Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure. - Arjayay (talk) 15:37, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

- Please understand, PoorOldEdgarDerby, that a Wikipedia article should be based close to 100% on reliable published sources independent of the subject. Wikipedia has almost no interest in anything said by the subject, or the subject's relatives, friends, employees, associates or agents (unless their statements have been reported by independent sources). It follows that a topic which has not been treated in some depth by independent published sources cannot be the subject of a Wikipedia article. --ColinFine (talk) 17:41, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

Reconciliation Day
Hi ,
We are keen to update Reconciliation Day for our own page, it is not just about the South African piece, that is one component. We own the copyright to 'Reconciliation Day'. South Africa is for South Africa 'Day of Reconciliation', what we have is a global name. Are we able to create our own page for Reconciliation Day rather than that just linking to the South African page ? Reconciliation Day (talk) 16:11, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
- You could give a look to WP:Notability to see if you have the reliable sources to back up the need for a separate page. Also see Wikipedia:Username policy#Promotional names, as per which, your username seems promotional. You may discard this username and choose a new user name which is not promotional. Finally, give a look to WP:COI which bars entities with conflicts of interest contributing to topics they are involved in. Xender Lourdes (talk) 17:45, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
- Hello, Reconciliation Day. My answer is in several parts.
- First, the article about the South African holiday is actually titled Day of Reconciliation. The page Reconciliation Day exists just as a redirect to the article, which is something we often do for alternative names and phrases that people might look subjects up under. Actually I think it should be replaced by a disambiguation page, because we also have an article Reconciliation Day (Republic of the Congo): I may do that myself after I've finished typing this answer. As for the use of the name: Wikipedia articles use the form of a name found in the bulk of reliable sources about a subject, irrespective of what name the subject themselves might prefer. It seems unlikely to me that you can copyright a two-word phrase like that, but IANAL.
- Secondly, if there are independent reliable published sources about it (which in this case would mean "written and published by people who have no connection with your organisation"), Wikipedia could have an article on your organisation. It would absolutely not be your article, it would be Wikipedia's article about you, and you would have no control over its content. If there are not such sources (the Wikipedia jargon is that the subject is "not notable") then we cannot have an article about it.
- Thirdly, if we are to have an article about your organisation, you are strongly discouraged from writing it. You are not forbidden (but writing a new article is difficult even if you don't have a conflict of interest), and if you decide to go ahead nevertheless, I strongly advise you to read Your first article, (as well as the one on Conflict of Interest that I linked to above), and use the Articles for Creation process described there. You may also need to be familiar with the requirements on Paid editors.
- Finally, your user name is probably unacceptable, and you should change it. Accounts must be used by individuals, not shared; and may not suggest that they are editing on behalf of an organisation. Please see Username policy. --ColinFine (talk) 17:57, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
Policy on developing articles in mainspace?
I have often heard it said that main space articles should conform to wikipedia standards such as notability and verifiability, but is there a specific written policy that states this? I am concerned about plainly substandard articles that are tagged for deletion, and the creator's response is "I intend to fix that over time." ubiquity (talk) 16:27, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
- Wikipedia:Your first article #7 of the tips section notes, "Create the article first in Draft or User space unless you are very sure that you can create an acceptable article on your first attempt." The guidance on top of that also mentions, "Keep in mind that if the article is not acceptable, it will be deleted quickly.". On the other hand, the CSD policy mentions, "Contributors sometimes create pages over several edits, so administrators should avoid deleting a page that appears incomplete too soon after its creation." Xender Lourdes (talk) 17:35, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
- Generally, Ubiquity, articles should not get deleted just because they do not establish notability (though they need to make a prima facie claim of importance), but only if the consensus is that they could not be rewritten to establish notability. See the Deletion policy. --ColinFine (talk) 18:02, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
