Kangeyam or Kangayam is a second grade municipality[4] in Kangeyam taluk of Tirupur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is situated at the heart of Tirupur district, on Gudalur-Nagapattinam National Highway 67,[7] which runs from Nagapattinam, a sea-side town in Tamil Nadu to Gundlupet in Chamrajnagar district of Karnataka.[8] Kangeyam is a major commercial centre in Tamil Nadu,[5] with the main commercial interests being rice hulling, coconut oil extraction, Ghee production and groundnut cultivation.[9] The famous Kangayam bull, which is known around the world[10][11][12][13] for its superior draught strength and adaptability to poor nutritional conditions,[13] is indigenous to the area around Kangayam,[5] and is named after the town. As of 2011, the town had a population of 32,147.

History
An ancient beryl mine near Kangayam produced Indian beryl which was exported to Roman empire, which is the reason for numerous Roman coins found in the nearby areas.[14]
Politics
Kangayam comes under Dharapuram revenue division of Tirupur District.[15] Kangayam assembly constituency is part of Erode Lok Sabha constituency.[16]
Mr. Selvakumara Chinnayan is the member of parliament for Erode Lok Sabha constituency.(Kangayam had previously been under Palani constituency.)[17] Mr NSN Nataraj (AIADMK) represents Kangayam Constituency in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.[18] Mr. Vengu, alias Manimaran (AIADMK) is the Chairman of Kangayam municipality.
Connectivity
Roads
Because of its strategic location,[19] Kangayam is well connected by roads to many major towns and cities in Tamil Nadu like Coimbatore, Tirupur, Tiruchy, Erode, Palani, Dharapuram, Tanjore, Karur, Chennai, Ooty and Kodaikanal.[8] Kangayam is located on National Highway 67, which is a major commercial route running through Nagapattinam-Tiruchy-Karur-Coimbatore-Mettupalyam-Ooty-Gudalur.[8] A State Highway running through Kangayam connects Erode and Palani. There are two bus terminuses in Kangayam abutting each other- one for mofussil buses which connect the surrounding villages with Kangayam, and the other for service buses which connect Kangayam with other parts of Tamil Nadu. The roads around Kangayam are one of the busiest in Tamil Nadu. Such heavy commercial traffic passes through it that Kangayam has been forced to install traffic signals to regulate the traffic. Other state highways that run through Kangeyam are SH 96(Erode - Perundurai - Kangayam road), SH 172(Tiruppur - Kangayam road) and SH 189(Kangayam - Kodumudi road).[20] Kangayam is about 46 km from Erode[21] (a major textile centre in Tamil Nadu),[22] 68 km from Coimbatore[23][24] (the textile capital of South India)[25] and 28 km from Tirupur[24][26] (a major knitwear production centre).[27]
Industries
Kangeyam is a major commercial centre in Tamil Nadu. It is located close to industrial towns such as Tirupur, famous for its apparel exports,[13] Erode, a major agricultural trading and textile promoting town,[22] Karur, famous for its textile production and Coimbatore, a vibrant city known for its textile industries and machinery exports.[25]
The major business interests in Kangeyam are rice mills, coconut copra making which is used in coconut oil production, ghee production and groundnut cultivation.
The region, despite being semi arid and rain fed, produces rice throughout the year. Rice is processed to hull it, and then marketed. The rice that is produced here is marketed in nearby cities and is also exported to countries in Europe and North America.[9] Paddy procured from Thanjavur and Cauvery delta regions in Tamil Nadu and from other states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are also brought here for processing. There are more than 500 rice mills in Kangayam Taluk.[28]
Coconut oil production in Kangayam began in the 1980s when coconut cultivation started spreading in Tamil Nadu. With that, the region began to develop into an important commercial centre. The coconut oil that is produced here is marketed all over Tamil Nadu, and also in other states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh,[29] and is also exported.[5] Coconut kernel is first allowed to dry on large fields made for this purpose, and then processed in oil mills to produce coconut oil. Kangayam is often named among the major coconut oil producing regions of India.[30][31][32][33] There are about 150 coconut oil manufacturing units in and around Kangayam, and about 500 kopra processing and drying units in Kangayam Taluk.[28] The town is a very important rice and oil market in Tamil Nadu, and is called the "Rice and Oil Town".[5]
Ghee production is a major business in Kangayam.[9]
Ornamental stone production is also a major commercial interest in Kangayam. The stone that is produced is known as "Moon Stone", and is exported to other countries.[5]
Agriculture
The primary occupation of the people is agriculture, and there are a lot of businesses in and around Kangayam that depend on agriculture, like rice mills and oil mills. The main agricultural products are rice, coconuts and groundnuts.[9]
Rice is produced all around the year and is processed in rice mills that are located in and around Kangayam, and then marketed.[9]
Coconut trees are grown in farms in and around Kangayam. The kernel is dried and used for edible oil production. Kangayam is often named among the major coconut oil producing regions of India.[19][29][32][33] Groundnut cultivation is also an important agricultural activity in Kangayam.[9] Groundnuts are used for edible oil production.
Demographics
According to 2011 census, Kangeyam had a population of 32,147 (in Tamil Nadu a panchayat union population exceeds one lake and above it will get municipal status kangayam gets status through court order by hectic effort of present chairman's father)now more than 2lakh, with a sex-ratio of 987 females for every 1,000 males, much above the national average of 929.[34] A total of 2,811 were under the age of six, constituting 1,485 males and 1,326 females. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes accounted for 9.33% and .07% of the population respectively. The average literacy of the town was 77.7%, compared to the national average of 72.99%.[34] The town had a total of : 9449 households. There were a total of 15,720 workers, comprising 392 cultivators, 603 main agricultural labourers, 1,610 in house hold industries, 11,503 other workers, 1,612 marginal workers, 63 marginal cultivators, 155 marginal agricultural labourers, 225 marginal workers in household industries and 1,169 other marginal workers.[35]
People and culture
People below poverty line are around 3%,[7] which is much lower than the national average of 29.8%[36] and the state average of 17.1%.[37] There has not been any major communal violence in the known past. The cultural practices largely resemble those seen in other parts of Tamil Nadu. Majority of the people are Hindus, while Christians and Muslims constitute minor proportions.
Places of importance around Kangeyam
Sivanmalai is a Hindu temple site located on the State Highway 172 (Tiruppur - Kangayam road). It is about 5 km from Kangeyam.[38] The temple is located atop a small hill.[39] The temple is famous for its "Thai Poosa Thiruvizah", a festival which is celebrated annually. People come from many parts of Tamil Nadu to take part in the festival, which lasts 18 days. A gigantic wooden cart called "Ther" is pulled by people, on a pathway about 3&ansp;km long around the temple, as part of the festival celebrations.[40] Chennimalai is a town located on SH 96(Erode - Perundurai - Kangayam road).[20] There is a Hindu temple located atop a hill.[41] A number of festivals are organised every year.[42]
Orathuppalayam Dam, built across the Noyyal River, is about 17 km from Kangayam.[43] The dam is a major concern for environmentalists because of its polluted waters.[44][45]
Vattamalai is a small hill, with a Hindu temple atop it.[46] It is located at about 8 km from Kangayam.[47] Many Indian movies have been shot at Vattamalai. Recently, the shooting of a Hindi movie starring Shah Rukh Khan made news as temple authorities refused to allow the crew to shoot inside the temple.[48][49]
Hospitals
There is a 54-bedded Government Hospital in Kangeyam.[50] Two Primary Health Centres at Chavadipalayam and Pachapalayam, and a Community Health Centre at Nathakadaiyur are under the administration of Kangeyam Health Block, which comes under Dharapuram Health Unit District (HUD).[51] Besides these, there are a number of private hospitals.[52]

Kangeyam Bull
The Kangeyam bull is a cattle breed that is indigenous to the area around Kangeyam.[5] There are two varieties of Kangeyam cattle. The smaller variety is prevalent in Kangeyam, Dharapuram, Udumalpet, Pollachi, Palladam and Erode, while the larger one is prevalent in Karur, Aravakurchi and Dindigul.[55] The Kangeyam bull is known around the world[10][11][13] for its superior draught strength and adaptability to poor nutritional conditions.[13] They have a compact body with short, stout legs, strong hooves, a short neck and a firm hump, and are usually grey or white in colour. They are highly valued draught animals.[55] These animals are now at the brink of extinction.[12]
