Hello Essjay, how are you? I have just joined Meta today. So it is about [[:meta:Proposals for new projects]] page, where many users complained that its a total mess. I have an idea to make the page like [WP:FA]], that each project is placed in a different page. Then we can put templates on the main proposal page. How about that? I will do it real soon. Essjay is still around, he's just very, very busy. He's sorry the edit counter isn't working, but he doesn't know how to fix it; they changed servers and it's "totally borked" as he put it. He hasn't called anyone in Maryland or anywhere else, and would like to make it clear that he will '''never''' call anyone, so please don't believe anyone who says he did. |
|||
Right now he's very busy in real life and is enjoying his time away; whether others know it or not, he gave up a lot of free time and many of the things he enjoys doing to be able to be here as much as he was. He's currently working on several writing projects that had been completely ignored for the better part of two years, a new position, and a happy return to the world of daylight and social activities. |
|||
Those of you who are close to him will know he wasn't feeling well shortly before he disappeared; he's doing much better, has new medication (and is taking it), and is on a much more reasonable schedule. He feels terrible guilt for leaving you all, and misses you terribly; his doctors and I have encouraged him to break character a bit and be selfish enough to take care of himself for a while. I appreciate all the supportive people who care about him here, and assure you all he is doing very well. |
|||
I can't say whether he will be back soon, a long time from now, or ever; that is a decision he has to make, and he simply doesn't know when will be the right time. Until then, he asks that I give all of you who are friends his love, and that you all continue with what he would tell you if he were here: |

Privacy Issue
In User:Essjay/Archives/41 under the heading "User:Compaquser" a real name of a person was written against Wikipedias Privacy Policy and under "The "right to vanish" Policy by User: Kirjtc2 on August 4,2006 . This should be erased as the policy should be enforced. Especially if they have departed Wikipedia . I find this to be a poor repesentation of Wikipedia .

CovenantD
User CovenantD has been bothering other editors the same way you claimed in his talk page. I'm making all the complainers aware that we're that he has been doing this to several articles and editors.
I wrote him this: From my understanding you were blocked for 6 hours because of your 3RR violations in Clock King, please use the time to think about your actions. You've been a very inconsiderate user. the purpose of wikipedia is to make well sourced informative articles, not un sourced uninformative articles that don't ilustrate the content. If you don't like the topic, go to an article about a topic you like and provide research, tables, infoboxes and images according to guideline. Thank you--The Judge 02:10, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for writing an updated PHP version of the Interiot's tool. I love to able to see my edit count again. It is useful and VERY COOL! Royalbroil 12:46, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
New IRC bot needed
Hello Essjay. I do not know if you are following the discussion at WikiEN-I about WP:BLP. We are discussing the possibiity to have a similar bot as the one running at vandalism-en-wp, that monitors the newly created Recent Changes page for articles on living people, that can be used by the newly forming Wikipedia:BLP Patrol. Could you help? ≈ jossi ≈ t • @ 13:46, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
ACCUSATION OF SOCKPUPPETRY LODGED AGAINST ME BY ANOTHER WIKIPEDIAN WHO HAS REVERTED (ALMOST) ALL MY EDITS
I used the (helpme) function and received this reply:
"Well since I have no way of verifying the truth of otherwise of if you really only started today (From my perspective someone who genuinely started today would say that, but so would someone who is trying to pretend they only started today). I suggest you discuss it with the person who believes you are a sockpuppet, I have no magic wand to make them believe differently." --User:pgk 15:31, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
I contacted the individual (User:Demiurge) making the charges against me explaining that I was not who he evidently is mistaking me for, but I have not heard back from him.
This boils down to some unfortunate coincidence:
a) My ISP is similar to some malfeasants, but all I can say, not being a computer systems expert, is that I live in Manhattan, NY, in a building filled with people with computers, some of whom undoubtedly use Wikipedia.
b) My new page edit (Robin Livingstone) was not deleted or recommended for deletion, and a former editor of that exact same page was none other than User:pgk -- talk about coincidences!! And why did not User:Demiurge recommend that page for deletion, perhaps he liked its contents, which would indicate extreme subjectivity and abuse of power (although what power he has as a non-administrator is not clear to me, as a first time user).
I do not believe my edits should be vandalized by someone who suspects something, and I believe that there should be a checks and balances system to force him to desist until he is authorized to do what he is doing (he is not an administrator, which I have discerned from his/her own userpage).

User creation log
I find that on the user creation log, in about 1 minute there is at least 1 new user. Why is this so? Is Wikipedia becoming more popular? •Sean•gorter• 07:13, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- Actually, according to Special:Log/newusers, there's a new user registered every few seconds. However, statistics were gathered that most of the don't edit at all or are indefinitely blocked right away. I suspect that only once every few minutes do we actually get a real new contributor. Hi Essjay.
You made a CheckUser some time ago about this user. I don't understand who you did a CheckUser on? Did you only check the two users listed at the link, or did you check all those users listed at User:Mikkalai/arkven#Alphabetic list?
Thx, Fred-Chess 17:41, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
Elections
I am frankly appalled by the use of a dysfunctional (and discredited) electoral system called approval voting to fill a single empty position on the board of trustees. It is impossible to rationally decide whom to vote for in this system unless you have a fairly accurate idea of how others are going to vote; in the absence of opinion polls, this is indeed an impossibility.
Other systems avoid these problems, the obvious choice would be a single transferable vote system.
I'm trying to find out who decided to use this system, whether there was any discussion leading up to it, and whether there's any way of moving to a sane system.
Can you help?

This IP address vandalized my talk page. Can you block 205.188.116.135? •Sean•gorter•(Talk) 08:57, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

I realise you and the other election officials must be busy. I'd appreciate it if you could find the time to answer the questions on Meta at When will the election results be announced?. Thanks. Carcharoth 13:01, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
- Essjay has been missing in action for over a month, so you probably won't get a fast response. Perhaps you should ask one of the other election officials. MER-C 02:16, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

monobook.css
Just wanted to let you know I found your mononbook.css on the page for that, and adapted it a bit to what I wanted--especially some minor color changes, and to make it crystal clear to me what links I've viewed/not viewed in the past 24 hours (I keep my visited history limited thus). Oh, and to make external HTTP: links shockingly bold compared to the rest of the test--especially for finding non properly formatted references in the body of text. Yours was the best one of the lot (I just needed to tweak barely a few things for my own taste). Oh, and I love the new messages notification change. Thanks! · XP · 19:13, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

Talk page archive bot
Can User:EssjayBot III duplicate the type of archive I've used here?
- Style is User_talk:Omegatron/Archive01
- Last archive made was number 5
- Should archive after a section has been dead for 4 months
- 100 kB is a good maximum size
I'd like it to auto-generate the list of headings, though, on the archive page. Is that possible? I got the style from Wikipedia:How to archive a talk page, so it's probably common. (Worth writing if you haven't yet, in other words.)
Are there other bots that do this? (So I can comparison shop.) ;-) — Omegatron 02:47, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
- I'd like to prod you towards User:Werdnabot, only because Essjay has been on a two month wikibreak and doesn't look like returning. MER-C 10:16, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

Re: User:Robbie31
Hi. I was wondering if you could tell me what it is about CSS or whatever that is edited to make the appearance of Wikipedia change... if it is not too much trouble... what are the benefits? Mind changing my CSS and what else so that the appearance of Wikipedia could change and then if I don't like it, just changing it back or whatever? I really like modifying stuff and if you don't mind you might change my Wikipedia appearance... thanks... --Adriaan90 11:20, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
Edit Count?
Does your edit count still work? Cbrown1023 17:54, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
Counter broken
This is very similar to the above question. As I clicked on your wonderful counter today to see my edit count, it said that I am "Forbidden" and "You don't have permission to access /~essjay/edit_count/Count.php on this server." My server is Internet Explorer. I hope you can get this to work again because I really like your counter (and your beautiful user page too). Thanks! Reywas92Talk 21:51, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
- Oh no...I'm going through editcoutitis! Help! Akradecki 22:26, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hello; Essjay has been inactive, so I thought I would take the liberty to comment on your question. I don't know what the matter is with his edit counter, but in the meantime, may I suggest Flcelloguy's Tool? The vast majority has been developed wonderfully by a couple of technically-proficient Wikipedians (not by myself, contrary to the name :-) ), and is not toolserver-based, meaning that it's immune to toolserver crashing, etc. The tool is intended as a backup, though, so as soon as (or if) Essjay's counter comes back online, I highly suggest using that. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 22:34, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
- On a purely technical note: Internet Explorer is your browser, a client side program (the client being you, the person surfing the web). The server is on the other side of the internet, not on your computer, where the thing you are accessing is. So, the fact that you couldn't access the counter has nothing to do with the fact that you are using Internet Explorer. Armedblowfish (talk|mail|contribs) 22:57, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
- Mine and
a fewall other peoples Edit counters don't work. It is a great tool and is sorely missed. Thanks, Dfrg.msc 1 . 2 . 3 07:20, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
- The permissions for the edit_count directory in Essjay's public_html on Hemlock (the new toolserver, the one which tools.wikimedia.de now points to) is set to 700, and I don't know if this is a simple mistake or if it's been disabled on purpose. You can still access the copy of the edit counter on the old toolserver *hint* *hint*. I'll e-mail Essjay and ask him what's up. Cheers, Tangotango 08:51, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
Latin Motto
I got a message from you about neofascism mediation and I checked out your user page. Had to google your latin motto. I like it! The town of Bolton in England has one which says about the same but shorter, Supera Moras. I think it says, Overcome the Mess. But now they're translating it as overcome delays. Edit counting (again)
It seems that there is currently no tool for simple edit counting (simple meaning something even I can do). Is this a fair reflection of the status quo? --Dweller 17:03, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

- Have you considered going through Wikipedia:Editor review first? It's slower, and won't make you an admin, but you'll probably get good constructive feedback that isn't as brief or harsh as if people were screening you for adminship. Honestly, I don't think you could make adminship if you nominated yourself now - a lot of voters look at edit count, and you seem to have less than 500 edits. Different people have different standards, but 3000 edits is usually considered good. But don't let that discourage you, editcountis ignores the quality of edits, and given time, I'm sure you'll be a great admin, if that's what you really want to do. : ) Armedblowfish (talk|mail|contribs) 00:49, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

Essjay and Wikipedia
Please feel free to check out Essjay's contributions.
He hasn't posted anything to Wikipedia since August 14. We're assuming that he's okay, though there was one user who may have gotten a call from him in Fort Meade, Maryland, though this is dubious. For now, those of us who worked with Essjay at The Countervandalism Network must simply wait for his return.
He hasn't posted in a while. If you put a note to him here, he's not likely to see it anytime soon. It'd be best to contact someone else who can direct you to a more timely contact. Thank you. ~Kylu (u|t) 23:00, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
