Welcome!
Hello, my name is Red Phoenix.
Yes, that's an internet handle and not my real name. I choose not to disclose my real name publicly. The inspiration for the name came to be in 2007, coming from the legendary figure of the phoenix, and I've used it ever since. I joined Wikipedia in August 2007 as Redphoenix526 in order to make some updates without showing my IP address, and well, I'm still here today. How that is, I'm not really sure, but I'm glad.
A little about me
I'm employed as an assistant manager with a national retailer in the United States and I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Purdue University. I'm a proud Hoosier, born and raised. I'm also an author of fantasy fiction in my spare time, though it's just a hobby at this point. Ever since I was young, I have always been a fan of Sega consoles and video games, and have remained a member of the Sega task force of WikiProject Video games. More than that, though, I've enjoyed working in Wikipedia's functional areas, including WP:AFD, WP:GAN, and continued work with the Video games WikiProject, especially the Sega task force.
After starting in August 2007, I retired in July 2008 after a failed RFA and rampant drama running in the Sega task force, where I spent most of my time. I began to grow distant from the community I had worked with and just as well saw how much time Wikipedia was taking away from my college studies, because I could not put it down. During my year here, I had a few great contributions, including getting Crush 40 and Sega Genesis to GA status, as well as List of Sega 32X games to FL status, when the standards for each status level were more loosely interpreted than they are now, and referencing did not require such lofty standards for reliability. All were delisted after I retired, but in a way I think that's a good thing because being six years older I can see more that can be done with each.
I returned in May 2013, and I don't have any plans to leave soon. Even during my time of inactivity, I did frequently check Wikipedia and my user pages to see if anything was going on. It feels very good to have that spirit to keep editing again.
So, what am I doing back here?
Having been "back" for over a year now to the point where this is the main phase of my editing time on Wikipedia, I just find the notion of writing on the subjects I like so appealing. Ever want to find out why the Sega 32X failed and what's really true amidst all of the internet rumors? I would say I have the answer now because of the research I put into writing its article, now a featured article. What was the real story behind Sega v. Accolade? The answer is now available to the public. It's so neat to me to do the research, find the right answers, and put them into a form which others can read and understand the whole story. That to me is just so enjoyable, and likely why I'm so focused on high quality contribution. Anymore I'm here because I enjoy it and I have time to enjoy it, which when combined with my job and my other writing projects I do, such as my fantasy fiction writing, makes me feel like quite the productive individual.
Despite it all, I'm still an administrator hopeful and would love to be renominated to have access to "the mop" after I've regained my experience with writing Wikipedia articles and with contributing in Wikipedia's service areas. I'd really like to have a focus on dispute resolution and the administrator's noticeboard, as I fancy myself a good mediator of discussion, but would love to help out in other areas such as XFD, etc. My only RFA failed because of my naivety, but with six years comes a sense of maturity and a knowing of what I was missing before, and what I needed to learn from the experience.
A brief rundown of my editing philosophies
Very much, I'm a true WikiDragon. I make huge edits to pages, often focusing on one or two at a time, striving to amp up its quality. I always shoot for good article status as a bare minimum on any project I work on. I do tend to be a little protective of my own edits, but I credit that to pride, a trait that I have both on and off the encyclopedia. The opportunity to improve an article that has been down for so long and to work on it on my own to make it worth reading is a very appealing aspect to editing that I believe allows me to enjoy contributing.
Areas of my editing interest
If you would like me to assist with an article that is in my interest area, feel free to leave a message on my talk page and I'd be glad to have a look.
- Video game consoles, especially for Sega
- Related video game franchises, such as Phantasy Star Online, Hyperdimension Neptunia, Sonic the Hedgehog, etc.
- Indiana State Roads and interstate highways. Seriously, though, INDOT needs to reconsider their road numbering in a few places...
- Legal cases related to video game law, such as Sega v. Accolade
I also periodically do some FA and GA reviewing on request.
My favorite contributions
Here's some of the articles and lists that contain my best contributions. Anything listed here, I have personally worked on to make it have that status. Former GAs were demoted during my inactive periods, as the referencing standards of Wikipedia have improved. Though I am disappointed in the diminished article qualities that have resulted, I am glad to know the standards have improved and look forward to the challenge of improving them again.
