Delta Sigma Theta members category
Every single article listed that I added came from the article that lists the members of the sorority. Until proven otherwise, I am assuming every woman listed on that page belongs there and therefore in the category. If you do not believe they belong in the categor y, then to be consistent you should remove them from the list. Postcard Cathy (talk) 06:33, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for January 27
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited List of Phi Beta Kappa chapters, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Augustana College and University of the Pacific (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Tons of representatives from GLAM institutions will be present, and we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, check out "Information for Volunteers".
I am also pleased to announce events for Wikimedia DC Black History Month with Howard University and NPR. Details on those events soon.
If you have any questions or have any requests, please email me at james.harewikimediadc.org.

Phi Gamma Delta letters
I received your message regarding the reason why the changes removing the Greek version of the fraternity letters were considered censorship. While I question whether simply changing the way the letters are displayed from their Greek to their English equivalents should actually be considered "censorship," I understand the point you're making and can abide by the explanation. Dougfields (talk) 18:32, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
- Naraht, I see I'm not the only one to be surprised by the reversion of "FIJI" to "ΦΓΔ". I don't have any skin in the game here. I'm a Greek, an experienced Wikipedia editor with tough hide, and I'm not a Fiji. Nor do I favor giving one group any perceptual edge over another, akin to saying their letters are more special then ours. But in writing the articles where Fiji's name is mentioned, members wrote to me asking for this courtesy, and so I went with it. Really, why the heck not? I'd point out that this IS NOT censorship - governments censor. Rather, what this IS about is a respectful accommodation to how that group wants to be identified. Further, since I noted the rationale as references on the pages I authored, perhaps it would have been more helpful for you to have addressed the matter on a Talk page. Jax MN (talk) 19:31, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
- I've read the WP:CENSOR admonition. Still, this seems unnecessarily annoying in this case, to overrule how this organization wants others to name them. Jax MN (talk) 19:37, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Dougfields: @Jax MN: WP:CENSOR and indeed Censor make it clear that censorship is a concept applied to Wikipedia rather than just by governments. Wikipedia has received a large number of requests from various Muslims to remove images preporting to be of Mohammed, and fulfilling their requests would be censorship of the article on which it occurs. On the Talk page for the Phi Gamma Delta article, Question 6, there is information for how *on that article* a setting can be done for a user with an account so they don't see it. That enclosing script can be added to other locations where the greek letters exist, but the information on how to use it would be necessary. If the President of Exxon-Mobil asked that wikipedia refer to it by Esso in Wikipedia, we wouldn't do so unless that was the way that the NYT & Washington Post started doing so. The legal name of the group is Phi Gamma Delta,

- The fact that Phi Gamma Delta limits where members of the fraternity use it *is* a relevant piece of information to be mentioned in the the article about Phi Gamma Delta, however that limitation is only for the members of the fraternity, which neither Wikipedia *nor* the large majority of its members are. I'm also a member of a Greek Letter Fraternity (mentioned on my user page). I've also been through this discussion at Talk:Phi Gamma Delta. I fully support the use of FIJI when the abbreviations ATO or DU or Phi Kapp is used and recently FIJI was *added* to the descriptor at the Phi Gamma Delta page.(note, I asked their national when to use FIJI and when to use Fiji, and the answer that I got was FIJI when referring to the Fraternity, Fiji when used as an adjective (so, he is a FIJI, he lives in the Fiji house), but I can't find that referenced). - We have a difference of opinion then. Naraht, you do a lot of good on Wikipedia, which I'll state for the record, because more casual readers and editors may think you are bullying over a small potatoes issue. Yeah, I wish FIJI used letters like others do. But it takes all kinds to make a world, and I would therefore grant them that small courtesy since they asked me with what I thought was great sincerity over a reasonable point of their own branding. Sheeesh. This isn't Mohammed, and they aren't Exxon. Aren't there other, more pressing and bigger errors on Wikipedia that an editor of your prodigious and quite helpful output should spend their time on? Jax MN (talk) 21:19, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Jax MN: No, it isn't Mohammed. But the policy covers matters great and small. I've spend *years* along with other editors dealing with the continued deletions of the greek letters on the Phi Gamma Delta page (the large majority of which weren't even close to as courteous as Dougfields). At one point even the replacement of the letters with a small image of the Phi Gamma Delta flag (Purple with white letters and a star) was considered, but the decision was made to keep consistency with the other GLOs. I'm just not sure why "..their own branding" should ever be a consideration in what should and should not be on Wikipedia. (And I've had to explain this to my *own* national fraternity!)

Thanks for your edits on the page. The table grid is a good idea. If you don't mind I will add that myself so I can learn more about editing. Also, should I add information about a DK national officer who became a Sigma Pi national officer? Gooseneck41 12:46, 16 April 2015

- current school name
- chapter name

- chapter name as of 1960,
- Active (in whatever it ended up in)
or something similar name after being let me know if you have any help, I've done a few List of Alpha Phi Omega chapters, for example. :) And for the national officer who came over, just make sure it is referenced, but the Sigma Pi magazines would be very useful for that.Naraht (talk) 17:39, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

Your common.css page
Hi; I notice that in User:Naraht/common.css you have the CSS rule
.ambox-Orphan{display: inherit !important;}
- please note that there is an error in this (almost certainly copied from an old version of Template:Orphan#Visibility) which causes incorrect display in some browsers.
To check this, visit this page and look at the second bullet (the one that precedes the text "This article is an orphan ..."). If this bullet is not in the same alignment as the other four, but displaced to the left, you can fix it by altering inherit
to table
in the CSS rule mentioned earlier. If that doesn't work either, alter it to block
.
Template:Orphan#Visibility has been amended. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:29, 1 May 2015 (UTC)
About Durham Collage
Hey Narhat,
Thanks for the heads up about the lack of info on the college. I didn't know if I would need to do more than just add a few internal links but you pretty much answered that question. And Nice job or making all of the links on your fraternity page blue :o I'm just getting the hang of putting up the right number of said links, so just think of me as that random person that loves to add links that aren't red. Thanks for the welcome and just ask me if i can help out for adding links on other pages or if you can teach me anymore stuff than what I've read on the guidelines.
- Hope to see ya around,

Potential GA Nomination
Hi Naraht, I just wanted to let you know I'm planning to nominate University of Virginia Greek life for GA status (it currently has a B rating). Since you've been helping with the article I thought you might be interested. If you have thoughts or suggestions let me know. Thanks again for all your help! Puppysnot (talk) 15:13, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Puppysnot: Well the phrasing where the chapter names were added may need to be altered. Also, the descriptions of the Professional seems a little stilted, at the level of *anyone* who wants to rewrite them, I'd probably be happy with. No reference for Chi Epsilon. Sorting on the dates puts ADPhi in third place, even though Beta Theta Pi claims to be third. We may want to add a dts hidden to put that one at the end of the year. Let me know if I should copy this list to the article talk page...Naraht (talk)
- Thanks for the feedback. I rephrased the chapter names where it needed to be done, expanded some professional society descriptions slightly (it's difficult to find notes about them though, since most don't have their own chapter websites), added a reference for Chi Epsilon, edited Beta's description, and added a few more honor societies. Unfortunately I couldn't find a reference for the founding dates of Chi Epsilon or Alpha Sigma Lambda, but I'll keep looking. Puppysnot (talk) 16:31, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
Bots
You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.
What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.
This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.
If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!
- The simple solution is to simply include the "rawcontinue" parameter with your request to continue receiving the raw continuation data (example <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages&rawcontinue=1>). No other code changes should be necessary.
- Or you could update your code to use the simplified continuation documented at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Query#Continuing_queries (example <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages&continue=>), which is much easier for clients to implement correctly.
Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.
Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.
Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. I've started reviewing. The Sec of National Defense certainly is Enrile. I'm looking at the rest. The entire article could use more appropriate references, but it simply is harder to find those for the RP than for some other places. Atty. Wally Bayola, took the trial initiative to explore the idea to tap the younger generations. They decided to recruit in the High School sector. This gave birth to the "Junior Tau Gamma Phi" or better known as the "Junior Triskelions", founded at San Beda College - High School in 1975, where Triskelion Paolo Ballesteros was one of the founders.[6]
i tried editing this once, but you returned the article the way you edited it.
you are being bias on editing other fraternities articles. you are making fun of them.
also,Sorry for the initial revert, but don't change articles like Tau Gamma Phi in the way that you did.

Even though I did not write the article, I am failing to understand your recent revision (revert) that you recently did. Why were the wikilinks to his high school removed and instead, the use of the school district as a wikilink. To me, the way this is now written is grammatically incorrect. Does anyone really care what counties the school district he attended is located? If I wanted to know more about his school, I would go to his school page. Since I did not author this article, I will leave it as is, but I will check with a few other editors about the changes. You can leave a message on my user page. Thanks. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Alpha Kappa Psi (sorority), you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Stuart Hall, Georgia and Shorter College (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

ArbCom elections are now open!
Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Katya
OK, so why don't you include this sources in the article, instead of simply closing it without votation or other advises? Milca jnr (talk) 17:14, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
- @Milca jnr:I wasn't the one who changed the article back to the redirect. (Strictly speaking that doesn't count as a closing, but he's right about the sources being insufficient) What you did is still available at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Katya_Zamolodchikova&oldid=692293868 . I'd suggest copying it to your sandbox and improving it. It would be reasonable for most if not all of the Queens who have been on RuPaul's drag race to have pages, including Katya. Take a look at some of the other pages in Category:RuPaul's Drag Race contestants (The winners are in a subcategory). I guarantee you *if* the references looks like those on Laganja Estranja or Alexis Mateo then it is *much* likelier to stay.Naraht (talk) 21:51, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
- also,@Milca jnr: looing at the [1]] of the article, it appears that @Bearcat: actually did make a start of an article for Katya back in August which someone else changed back to the redirect.Naraht (talk) 21:59, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
Phi Sigma Kappa Chapters
Hello Naraht. I'm not convinced that WP:EL requires or suggests the removal of website links to the chapters cited on the page, List of Phi Sigma Kappa chapters. You deleted them all, not even attempting the median step of turning these into reference items. I disagree with the necessity of your edit, but have little time to address the matter as I am at work. However, I thought I would challenge you on this since you and I have corresponded and I appreciate your previous work. Please know, if I am not convinced at your explanation, I may revert or seek a poll. Jax MN (talk) 19:44, 3 December 2015 (UTC)
- @Jax MN:. To me, this is almost a perfect example of what is meant by the following text in Wikipedia:External_links#Links_in_lists:
"External link sections are not prohibited at the end of stand-alone lists or at the end of articles that contain embedded lists. However, the lists themselves should not be composed of external links. These lists are primarily intended as providing direct information and internal navigation, not a directory of sites on the web. This section does not apply if the external link is serving as a citation for a stand-alone list entry that otherwise meets that list's inclusion criteria."

Category moves
Hello Naraht. You shouldn't be moving categories using the move tab as you did here. You have to go either via speedy or full WP:CfD. Cheers, Number 57 16:48, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
- @Number 57: Two questions. 1) Is speedy move of categories in Twinkle? 2) Where is the policy on this? Naraht (talk) 16:52, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
- I've never used Twinkle, but there is mention of it on the CfD page, so I assume it is. The policy is all at WP:CfD. Although it doesn't explictly mention not using the move tab, in practice it is very much frowned upon – this is why there are both speedy and full discussions. Cheers, Number 57 19:04, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
- OK, I see that rename categories is essentially "under" the categories for Deletion concept in Twinkle. I'll use that from now on. I think part of the concern is getting things right so that bots can handle the change in the categories in each of the articles that are in that category.Naraht (talk) 19:31, 4 January 2016 (UTC)

I believe it is known as both interchangeably. Yes, I am part of a national greek org. I am sure there is a userbox but I prefer to not use it at this time. BlackAmerican (talk) 01:33, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
- @BlackAmerican:I think there was a note in one of the references that indicated that they had changed from Malik Sigma Psi (which they added the letters to make the administration happy) *to* MALIK. I'll have to see what I can find. OK, I've met some fairly experienced wikipedians who have fairly empty userpages, OTOH, if you do edit that greek orgs wikipedia page, you should state that you a member of that group in order to show that you do have a Conflict of Interest. My *first* edit was of the Wikipedia page of my GLO (fixing the alphabetical order of notable alumni), so I did it *really* early. I'm keeping an eye on the draft articles...Naraht (talk) 13:55, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
Yes, I haven't touched my frat's page and probably won't at all. You are right it was to make administration happy. It is on page 101 of this book. [1] BlackAmerican (talk) 06:47, 14 February 2016 (UTC)
- @BlackAmerican:. Right. I think there is quite a bit more that can be extracted from BG101 without getting into problems with Copyright infringment. Oddly enough, I actually own a copy of Black Greek 101 (bought it when I was assigned as a staff representative to the Alpha Phi Omega chapter at Howard U.), and looked at the references in the book cited in the MALIK section and the refs in the book aren't useful in finding additional information (18 is a phone interview, 19-21 are from an unpublished pamphlet). Eta Phi Beta
Eta Phi Beta, are the sources good? BlackAmerican (talk) 03:39, 22 February 2016 (UTC)
- I put the references in better form, but in terms of notability, it still pretty thin. Epsilon Sigma Alpha for example is both collegiate and non-collegiate and has over 1000 chapters. For new sources I'd add Indianapolis Recorder,Indianapolis, https://newspapers.library.in.gov/cgi-bin/indiana?a=d&d=INR19711218-01.1.4&e=-------en-20--1--txt-txIN------- (18-dec-1971 page 4) and the Jacksonville Free Press entry http://ufdc.ufl.edu/UF00028305/00440 also reference back to the legislative resolutions at http://www.legis.ga.gov/Legislation/20112012/115136.pdf and/or ftp://ftp.legis.state.tx.us/bills/81R/billtext/html/house_resolutions/HR01800_HR01899/HR01866F.HTM for some of the facts. Not great secondary sources but best bet...Naraht (talk) 04:04, 22 February 2016 (UTC)

Pi Sigma Epsilon
Logo for your current project: from the clients page at greeklicensing.com, the Pi Sigma Epsilon logo there is correct. While variations on this are visible around the web, I did some looking and am convinced the proper logo should show the spur bar in gold, and the disk containing the letters should be rendered in amethyst. Jax MN (talk) 19:46, 29 February 2016 (UTC)
- Also, fairly recently, zealous speedy deleters twice removed pages that had been made for Pi Sigma Epsilon. If I can help on this one, let me know. Jax MN (talk) 16:34, 2 March 2016 (UTC)
- @Jax MN: Dropped a note to the AFD proposer, he's sort of neutral on the idea of a new page. I just need to make sure the history is from Baird's and I should be OK. But I'll let you and him (User:Justlettersandnumbers) of you know when the Draft is finished before moving it. Naraht (talk) 16:59, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

Use of "pages="?
My apologies again for screwing up your user name. When my patience starts wearing thin I tend to spend less time and care in proof-reading, but that is no excuse for collateral damage.
Anyway, I wanted to ask if you understand what I have been saying about using |pages=
(in the citation/cite templates) for the inclusive page range of the source, and then appending the specific page number(s) after the template. I am also curious if you have considered using short cites just so that the voluminous full citations (such as at Alpha Phi Omega) could removed from the main text.~ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 23:28, 21 April 2016 (UTC)
- @J. Johnson: I don't really understand. After doing all that work to pull the information into a Template:Cite Magazine putting information outside of it seems unreasonable. And in this type of magazine, articles often span multiple unconnected sections. If an article is on pages 19-21, 86, 88 & 89, things get worse. I don't understand short cites at all, other than they seem to be an alternative to Template:Rp which although I've used, I don't believe that I've used in Alpha Phi Omega.Naraht (talk) 02:41, 22 April 2016 (UTC)
-
- Oh. Well, I'd be happy to help you. (In part because I am interested in learning to to better explain this kind of stuff.) That you go so far as to use the ugly {{rp}} template confirms that you recognize the value of providing the specific page numbers, but there really is no need to use {rp}; short cites are definitely the superior option. Would you like some examples?
- That page ranges are discontinuous is no problem. Something like
|pages= 19-21, 86, 88 & 89
is fine. (Quite common in newspapers, and especially the NYTimes, which often continues a story in a different section.) - That the specific page(s) are outside the template should not seem unreasonable, as the citation (and everything inside the template) is about the source itself, while a specific page number does not tell us anything more about source, only about where material is taken for use in the article. Look at it this way: does a source, or the description of a source (that is, its citation) change depending on how many articles use it? That each article may reference different parts of the source is a detail about each article, not the source; the full citation of an article should (essentially) be the same for all articles. Does that make sense? ~ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 20:11, 22 April 2016 (UTC)
- @J. Johnson:In general, I use rp only in the cases where I've seen a *massive* reduction in the number of reference entries. See https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Slasher_film&type=revision&diff=709779493&oldid=709690315 for probably the most significant example I've done, The places where I expect to see Short cites are articles which cite to books, normally at least 4 books referenced more than once, and on average at least 4 cites to different locations in each book. (Would you agree that Jefferson Davis is a good example?) I simply tend not to work on that sort of article, as my interest is in Fraternities and Sororities, where the book I'd be most likely to use is Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities where the information on fraternity XYZ is going to be entirely on pages 487-491 (for example). Yes, Alpha Phi Alpha uses it and is a FA, but most of the Fraternity/Sorority pages aren't anywhere near that deep. Also, I personally don't particularly find rp usage ugly, *shrug*.Naraht (talk) 20:54, 22 April 2016 (UTC)

- In general there is no reason for, and plenty of reason against, any repetition of a full citation (with its full load of all the bibliographic detail), so your big Slasher film edit was justified on that basis. However, plenty of editors quibble (maybe even fulminate?) against {{rp}}. It's ugly because it exposes a specific detail right in the text, while the citation it applies to is buried in a note. That it is a page number is not obvious (some readers inquire, but I think many just ignore it), and in fact sometimes it is not a page number, which causes more confusion. If an {rp} was added to a regular note (enclosed in
<ref>...</ref>
tags) containing a citation, it would seem obvious to just suck the page number into the note. But of course that doesn't work with a "named ref" ("<ref name= ...").

- Which is another issue: if you repeat a citation with a named ref there is breakage if you edit a different section, and it can be tedious finding the citation itself if it needs to be edited. Short cites are definitely superior.
-
-
-
-
-
- Short cites are not limited to books, or to four or more cites. Even if an article cited only (say) newspapers, and each source only once, it is advantageous to use short cites. That you associate short cites with articles that cite books, and multiple times, is, I suspect, because shorter and shallower articles (that don't cite books) tend to not use short cites. Less experienced editors especially don't want to bother initially with the slight extra trouble, and then when they do need to repeat a citation it is easier to use a named ref.
-
-
-
-
-
- Jefferson Davis has good examples of short cites, including page specification. However, I am a bit surprised to see you all haven't used {{Harv}} templates to get the automagic linking. Well, that is probably because the article was originally written by someone who was set against using templates. I wonder: would there be any interest in converting that article, as a demonstration? ~ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 22:33, 22 April 2016 (UTC)
