Look for invalid units and refactor for Convert/old
Look at various suspect pages, to see if they are showing "invalid unit" or "unit mismatch" from the Lua Convert. Also, I have been updating the prior threads at Tt:Convert to use {convert/old}, where the results have been nonsense with the Lua version running as {convert}. -Wikid77 07:38, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Template:HASH
A tag has been placed on Template:HASH requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion because it is an unused duplicate of another template, or a hard-coded instance of another template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.
If the template is not actually the same as the other template noted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page explaining how this one is different so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{substituted}}</noinclude>).
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page's talk page, where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. meteor_sandwich_yum (talk) 03:44, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
Google Translate
Wikid77, you evidently do not speak German. Google Translate continues to make absolutely crucial mistakes in translating from and to German. To give you just one example, the sentence rendered as "Please go into detail and do not you come to the end" in the linked Google translation should really read "Please do not go into detail and come to an end". Such complete reversals of meaning are common in Google translations.
Another example: "Wenn wir kein Problem finden" means "If we don't find any problem". Google Translate translates this as "If we find a problem." Do not inflict this on this project. It has enough problems already. (Also see the current discussion regarding Laura Hale at WP:AN.) Andreas JN466 00:04, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Re:Use i-tag for italics
From their edit summary, it seems they're reverting your replies since the discussion has been moved to Module talk:Citation/CS1/Archive 9#Italics in citation title broken. If you want to bring up your points there, maybe that would be more helpful. I'm not sure Matma was reverting you in bad faith, but maybe it's better to discuss it on their talk page. I never thought of using HTML tags to italicize titles like that before, so thanks anyways. Whisternefet (talk) 17:47, 16 February 2014 (UTC)
Your contributed article, List of mathematical symbols as TeX codes
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, List of mathematical symbols as TeX codes. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – List of mathematical symbols. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at List of mathematical symbols – you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.
If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. Ozob (talk) 20:37, 16 February 2014 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of File:Titanic 3D poster.jpg
A tag has been placed on File:Titanic 3D poster.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free file with a clearly invalid licensing tag; or it otherwise fails some part of the non-free content criteria. If you can find a valid tag that expresses why the file can be used under the fair use guidelines, please replace the current tag with that tag. If no such tag exists, please add the {{Non-free fair use}} tag, along with a brief explanation of why this constitutes fair use of the file. If the file has been deleted, you can re-upload it, but please ensure you place the correct tag on it.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Orphaned non-free image File:Titanic 3D poster.jpg
Thanks for uploading File:Titanic 3D poster.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Magog the Ogre (t • c) 03:24, 22 February 2014 (UTC)
Disambiguation of second-order
The second-order disambiguation page shows up on the "top 1000 disambiguation pages" list for January 2014. One such link is in Chow–Liu tree, and you created that link on 26 August 2012.
As I'm sure you know, "second-order" is a rather abstract concept with many applications and generalizations. I don't think it's right to try to fill Wikipedia with enough articles that Chow–Liu trees could reference a second-order (or even third-order) expansion article specific to joint probability distributions. What I did, instead, is decide that the best page to send link-clickers to is Orders of approximation. Thus second-order turns into second-order. Then since "order" already has a link, there's no need for a wiki-link when the article gets to "third-order".
I edited the Chow–Liu tree article accordingly, and I hope you like the result. If you come up with a better resolution, please go for it. I won't be offended. Larry Doolittle (talk) 04:59, 23 February 2014 (UTC)
Mis-fixed citations
This edit puts the first and last name of authors #2 and #3 into the last2=
slot. That's incorrect, compared to the pre-existing use of coauthors=
, which is just deprecated. Also, Help:CS1_errors#Check .7Cisbn.3D value tells us that isbn-13 is the preferred isbn=
(rather than keeping the isbn-10). No sense in putting this better data in an unlinked spot after the template itself. DMacks (talk) 15:54, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you. I have my CSS parameters set to display the hidden CS1 error messages, which have become mostly nonsense crap about otherwise valid parameters. When I wrote the Lua script Module:Citation/CS1, I never imagined it would devolve into a primitive error-scanner spitting numerous trivial warning messages about valid cites in live articles. The original intention was to use Lua to make the wp:CS1 cite templates fast and auto-correct numerous typos, which it did initially to auto-fix over 25,000 pages. We knew, early last year, that hand-corrections of cite typos would require over 3 years of manual editing, and the problem still persists, so I am planning to rewrite Module:Citation/CS1 to use smart auto-correction, rather than tedious error messages. -Wikid77 (talk) 12:03, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

ISBN changes
I see you have been doing some ISBN fixes. I've noticed it as the articles are popping up on my lists because ISBN-13: is used instead of just ISBN. Instead of moving one of the ISBN's outside the citation template, it might be better to just remove the ISBN 10 number. Bgwhite (talk) 06:54, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

Wikipedia talk:Autofixing cites
I've undone your last edit to this page pr WP:TPO because it refactored my comment, adding a heading I didn't add, changing the indentation so it looked like a standalone comment, not a reply to yours following on from another reply. Your comments are still in the history of the page if you want to add them again as proper replies to comments.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 12:36, 17 March 2014 (UTC)
- Again, stop refactoring other editors comments. Just add your own, below the comment you are replying to (and any other replies to it), indented a level below so it's clear it's a reply. If you are not replying, just commenting, do it without indentation. If you are starting a new topic then do so at the end of the talk page. But leave comments by other editors alone. There are only a handful of comments so no need to e.g. break up long sections or sort comments into support/oppose or along similar lines. I have undone your edit again – it's unclear whether you were adding a reply to my comment or a new comment so I was unable to fix that, while the other section was added out of order. - OK, I've tried instead fixing instead of removing. I moved your new comment in order: per the guideline new sections are added at the end. I've removed the odd "(re: Keeping cite error messages) ". If it's meant to be a reply it has no content, and by indentation is a reply to yourself which makes no sense. If it's a heading for my post it doesn't need one, it's clear from the indentation what it's a reply to. And I fixed the indentation on your comment - it wasn't clear what you intended here but if it's a new comment it shouldn't be indented, if it's a reply to mine it should be indented twice ( ' :: ' ).--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 14:43, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited George Burns, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Schmuck (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hi, Wikid: Since you've been writing a lot about autofixing CS1 cites, I thought I would try asking you this. Would you know who or how the Category:CS1 errors: coauthors without author have been getting fixed? Speedy deletion nomination of Template:Location map quick
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Template:Location map quick, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.
If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 10:18, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
- I have moved the template back. I am making no judgement as to whether the move was good or bad, but if you disagree with the closure of a deletion discussion, the way to deal with your disagreement is in the first instance to discuss it with the closing administrator, and if you are not happy with the outcome of that discussion, then to take it to Wikipedia:Deletion review. Unilaterally reverting the outcome of the discussion because you personally disagree with the closure is not the way to do it. Template:cita web
I have restored this to a redirect; per the previous discussion this should be kept as a redirect so instances of it can be spotted. Instead any uses of the template then need to be fixed; this is the English WP and Spanish should not be used, whether for content or in references. Having cita web as a working template with working Spanish parameters allows and encourages editors to use Spanish in citation templates, making things harder for the majority editors and readers who don't know Spanish.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 23:55, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

{{cita web}}
at RfD
Whatever the consensus outcome on this is, I must say I am with your reasoning. As one who translates regularly (which is not to say often) to have these bilingual templates is a real bonus. I don't know about your view, but it seems to me that people who speak only one language assume the hard bit is translating the words. That is actually the easiest bit. The hard bit (in real life too) is then translating the sense, moving words around, changing idioms and metaphors, and so on.
In Wikipedia we then have the added task of changing templates, references and so on, and at least for me that takes far longer than just changing the text. For example the other day I translated Roman Imperial Coinage from French WP and the templates there are {{harvsb}}
which nearly not quite translates into {{harvnb}}
; French also has a template for {{INSEE}}
which although it was created on 14 April 2012 in the English Wikipedia just references the INSEE (French national statistical office) website generally where in French a parameter references the area code so that it brings up the specific census data; I'd argue that it is not useful just to link to the site generally. I created one some years ago at {{Ksh url}}
and {{Infobox Hungarian settlement}}
for the same reason as you have your German geo templates: they seem to have stuck whereas the Hungarian-language ones didn't, presumably just someone who thinks all the world is English. I am not sure what would happen if one pointed out that, what, 10 to 20 percent of an article is not English but markup (more for technical articles): should we remove that too?
I don't know why people propose deletion of these things when they are obviously helpful to translators and entirely hidden from readers. Yes, it would be lovely to have them in all English but a bot can do that, but it can only do it after the content has been added. How is a bot supposed to do it on nonexistent content? I don't understand people's reasoning process there. So I am entirely with you. I was not aware of the German templates because I don't speak German, but the reasoning is entirely sound, in my opinion.
Thanks for all your contributions to Wikipedia. Si Trew (talk) 07:01, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
- Well, the consensus was never clear to keep the redirect "{cita web}" as pointing to {{cite web}}, rather than expand as a full template which auto-translates to English, so now we need to see what features the template parameters should provide. -Wikid77 (talk) 12:20, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Efficiency question
You've shown interest in efficiency of Wikipedia, so I hope you are the right person to ask. I'm interested in {{cite doi}}, specifically how to expand the usage. Before I push for that, I'd like some idea of the "cost" of the existing template. I don't really know how it works, although I think I have a decent guess - I assume that when invoked in an article, the template makes a call to an external data base to pull the relevant information, such as author name.
I'm wondering whether there is any value in using WikiData, that is, would it be faster if the field information were populated into WikiData records? I think I realize this isn't quite as simple as it sounds, as some of the information changes over time, so there has to be a way to update the database regularly, but I'll address that detail only if there is a meaningful gain in efficiency from using WikiData.
(As an aside, it appears that you are a user of NoteTab. I use that almost exclusively for pre-editing additions to Wikipedia, with a modest library of clips for various functions.)--S Philbrick(Talk) 14:38, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
- Template:Cite_doi is already very efficient, using separate quick subtemplates named for each DOI document number, and hence no advantage by using Wikidata. However, it would be better to just repeat the cite details in each page, as {cite_journal} entries, and remove {cite_doi} as too complex for many users to follow. There have been numerous times when a {cite_doi} subtemplate contained a markup error in parameters, and many users were unable to find the related subtemplate to correct the error outside the page. As a realistic limit, cite templates must be designed for typical users, and the multi-level database structures, with details stored outside the referenced page, cause massive delays for typical users to update (or correct) citations. -Wikid77 (talk) 15:18, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
-
- Thanks for the good news. I'm working on a proposal, which already has several moving parts. I'm glad an option to use WikiData doesn't have to be another consideration.--S Philbrick(Talk) 17:19, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!
Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Question
HI. I'm enjoying our conversation on Jimbo's page. I have a question for you: Why do we have bots that do this? I learned <i> and </i>, <b> and </b> and Wikipedia is one of the few places I can use it! :). All those single quotes look awful and are so confusing. What is the advantage? I just use the html codes and let it fix them rather than trying to remember if I am supposed to use 2, 3 or 5 of the single quotes, since it is faster for me. But I do worry that maybe it messes something up. I'm hoping there is a good explanation for it. --David Tornheim (talk) 11:12, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
- I think the MediaWiki software has always used 5 tics around bold-italic text, but the wp:CS1 templates generate interim HTML "<i>" tags to italicize any title, including end-apostrophe as in "Livin' and Givin' " or such. Even worse the template parameters are coded as triple-brace "{{{x}}}" which confuses with a template's double-brace syntax "}}" where parameters could become "#[x]" as an alternate syntax to improve readability of markup. Jimbo installed the original wiki software to turn dismal Nupedia into successful Wikipedia and probably remembers, if not afraid to discuss. -Wikid77 (talk) 12:00, 24 February 2016 (UTC)

new pays per day -- Sweden off the charts for Jan. 2016
I was looking at the wiki-data for new articles per day and Sweden was off the charts for Jan. 2016 with 12,000 per day [2]. Do you know if that has been fixed and if the appropriate admins. know about it? I'm guessing it is some kind of spam... --David Tornheim (talk) 07:54, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

Question about edits and edit summary on Atayalangal
Hi Wikid77. I noticed this edit with this edit summary at Atayalangal:
(20 changes: ce; fix cite for 2nd date & pre-spaced cite bars)
- What are the 20 changes?
- Where is the copy edit?
- Where is the fix cite for 2nd date & pre-spaced cite bars?
- What was the purpose of any of these changes?
- Why are you deleting unused citation parameters?
Ping me back. Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk}
20:24, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
- @Checkingfax:, most of the 20 changes were spaces between the cite parameters, but also changed 2nd date to be "access-date=" and removed unused "author=" and "date=" to focus on parameters which are used, not unused. The unused parameters tend to clutter the markup and would bog a search for actual "author" where used. The copy-edit also removed space in name "M. G. Sasi" to be "M.G. Sasi" without the peculiar space between the initials. -Wikid77 (talk) 23:02, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Wikid77. Good call on changing the 2nd date= to accessdate=
-
- However, IMHO, if names have spaces they should be left. This is customary. For instance:
-
- You may notice that for M.G. Sasi he is M. G. Sasi in the lead and in the infobox.
-
- Unused citation parameters should be left intact unless they are deprecated or excessive. date= and author=, even if blank, should be left in place for a cite news or cite web template as this metadata may become available to a future editor and then they can pop it right in there. Cheers!

- @checkingfax - I disagree on both counts. Spaces between initials are fine for titles, standard form and all that, but it is not the convention for the small type within the body of an article, or a book, or a newspaper article, or a website. It is a peculiar affectation. Bear in mind that links should not be broken to tighten up the initials. As for deleting the ridiculous clutter of unused fields in info boxes and citation templates, this is, as Wikid indicates, beneficial for future editors. In a just world citation templates would be banned outright since they are nearly impossible for new editors to navigate. Anything to make the editing process for new editors less burdensome is for the good. Best regards, — Tim /// Carrite (talk) 15:51, 19 March 2016 (UTC)

Also, let me highlight for you: Unused citation parameters should be left intact unless they are deprecated or excessive. Leaving author= and date= in place is not excessive, but is helpful. As for spaces between initials in names and after the full stops the Chicago Manual of Style requires it, but on Wikipedia we only ask that you be consistent in an article; once the style is set, stick with it, regardless of your personal preference, bias, or how silly you think it looks. As for citation templates being "ridiculous", what is your alternative suggestion for preventing linkrot and providing harvestable metadata? What is an easier and better citation method new editors? Cheers!

YHWH
personal name.—Ps 83:18.Correct Pronunciation of the Divine Name. “Jehovah” is the best known English pronunciation of the divine name, although “Yahweh” is favored by most Hebrew scholars. The oldest Hebrew manuscripts present the name in the form of four consonants, commonly called the Tetragrammaton (from Greek te·tra-, meaning “four,” and gramʹma, “letter”). These four letters (written from right to left) are יהוה and may be transliterated into English as YHWH (or, JHVH — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:304:CD90:F30:D441:E190:47C9:9959 (talk) 00:41, 9 April 2016 (UTC)

Empty bold tags
Hi! I'm just wondering if you remember why you used empty bold tags like <b/>, for example in this edit. Also, do you know if you used such tags in other templates, and do other authors do it too? Apparently it breaks our prototype solution for phab:T89331 so I'm trying to work out whether we need to implement a fix. -- Tim Starling (talk) 23:47, 2 May 2016 (UTC)
- Editors have been using null tags for years like "<b/>" or "<span/>" (beyond null nowiki, "<nowiki/>") as escape-tokens to allow lead/trailing-spaces or leading semicolon ";" with only 4-to-7-character tokens rather than the 40-to-80-character nowiki tags, to avoid extra bytes in each template, with the
wp:expansion depth limit"wp:post-expand include size" being only 2,000 kb rather than 2.5 mb or more. -Wikid77 (talk) 17:55, 3 May 2016 (UTC)- So it's a workaround for phab:T14974? (Implicit newline insertion before * # : ; {|) Obviously
<nowiki/>
is the "right" way to do that, I guess (if we can't think of something better) -- I wonder if there's anyway to tell how many pages would really be broken (read, exceed the expansion depth limit) by replacing<b/>
with<nowiki/>
? Perhaps we could bump the limit from 2MB to 2.5MB at the same time as we get rid of the hack? C. Scott Ananian (talk) 19:58, 3 May 2016 (UTC)-
- I don't know how many pages use null-bold or null-span tags, among the current 5 million articles, but the massive wp:CS1 Lua cite templates, each, use about 2kb[!] of expansion space of the "wp:post-expand include size" to mega-hog, mega-waste the resource, and pages have been hackified smaller for years, such as "List of The Simpsons episodes" to fit the include-size limit. I don't think ruining pages matters any longer, as so many editors are ready to hackify the next oversized page, and users are accustomed to seeing 50,000 botched pages scarred with cite wp:reftag or other cite red-error messages. Just improve the wp:parser functions, and many editors will update more botched pages, as the coming months permit, among 50,000 other pages botched by templates. Keep up the improvements, and the wiki-gnome editors will further adjust thousands of pages as needed. Thanks. -Wikid77 (talk) 02:24, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
-
- So it's a workaround for phab:T14974? (Implicit newline insertion before * # : ; {|) Obviously

-
- Wikid, please give a specific example of a page that nowiki instead of b would push over the limit. I doubt any actually exist. Jackmcbarn (talk) 20:31, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- Many editors are working to hackify large pages as smaller. There have been over 450 pages in "Category:Pages where expansion depth is exceeded". It is difficult to keep aware of the thousands of botched pages for all the various problems. -Wikid77 (talk) 02:24/02:29, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
- In that case, this "solution" is completely unnecessary, as it's not even solving the right problem: making the expansion size smaller doesn't help pages where the depth is too high. Jackmcbarn (talk) 17:47, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
