Blogs as references
Hi there, I'm not sure what was confusing about the embedded note that you replaced in this edit, so maybe you can suggest a way to rephrase it to avoid confusion. It didn't seem to do the job, since you added content that was supported by marathistars.com, which is clearly a blog, bornglorious.com, which is clearly not a reliable source with an established reputation for fact-checking (it credits Wikipedia as a source for content at the bottom of the page), filmymonkey.com, which is clearly a blog run by who-knows-whom, and a Yahoo reference that does not resolve. So, to clarify, We do not use user-generated sources as references. This includes blogs, unverified Twitter accounts, IMDb, Wikia, discussion forums, website comments, even Wikipedia itself. We are only interested in what reliable published sources with established reputations for fact-checking and accuracy have to say about anything. Please familiarize yourself with our reliable source guidelines, and please also note our rules for editing biographies of living people. BLPs must be impeccably sourced, which again means no blogs or other poor sources. Please feel free to respond below if you so wish. Thank you. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 16:49, 23 June 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Coolgama, thanks for your note at my talk page. You're welcome to disagree about whether or not Marathistars.com is a blog or a "website" (I'm not sure what distinction you make between the two), but to my experienced eye, the site is shaped like every other cookie-cutter blog I happen across. It contains content that is not attributed to anyone, there's no indication of when that content was published, it does not announce who owns or operates it, and there's no indication that there's an experienced journalism professional editing the content.
- This fits the standard profile for a faceless content-scraping blog. Note for example the phrasing on the marathistars.com site:
- "Swapnil married a dentist by profession, in January 2005. It was a love marriage but the two divorced in 2009."
- Now look at marathionweb.com. Now look at marathishine.com. Now look at vipmarathi.me. These sites all contain the same general content arranged the same general way. Even the websites bear a general common resemblance in layout. What a lot of bottom-feeders do, is create garbage websites/blogs, "scrape" content (i.e. steal content) from other sources without attribution, and then perform some SEO witchcraft to drive traffic to their garbage sites, typically so they can get advertising revenue.
- If you're still skeptical, look at marathionweb.com again
- Swapnil married a dentist by profession, in January 2005.[9] It was a love marriage but the two divorced in 2009. He then married Leena Aradhye on 16 December 2011 in a private ceremony, at the Taj Hotel in Aurangabad. Leena also is a dentist
- Do you notice the [9]? That's because marationweb.com lifted the content (without attribution) directly from Wikipedia. Look at this February 2014 version of the article. Exact same prose. Even has the [9] in the same place.
- Now look again at marathistars.com. Note the statement: "Leena also is a dentist." That phrasing appears here in a November 2012 edit, when someone changes the prose from:
- "Surprisingly, Leena also happens to be a dentist like his first wife."
- to
- "Leena also is a dentist."
- This suggests very strongly, that like marathionweb.com, marathistars.com lifted the content directly from Wikipedia, which means that we are basically using Wikipedia as its own reference, as filtered through these useless content aggregators.
- If I need to further demonstrate the point, see tribuneindia.com. This Tribune interview written who-knows-when is almost certainly the source of the content:
- "Swapnil Joshi who divorced his first wife Aparna in 2009 married Leena Aradhye on December 16 in a private ceremony. Surprisingly, Leena also happens to be a dentist like his first wife.
- So, my point is, marathistars.com did not originate the content, they scraped it from somewhere, almost certainly from Wikipedia, which makes it as completely unreliable as the other sites included above (minus the Tribune, of course, as that is a reputable publication with an established reputation for fact-checking and accuracy.)
- As for your question, "why we are so rigid for birthdate?" WP:BLPPRIVACY explains it.
- "With identity theft a serious ongoing concern, people increasingly regard their full names and dates of birth as private. Wikipedia includes full names and dates of birth that have been widely published by reliable sources, or by sources linked to the subject such that it may reasonably be inferred that the subject does not object."
- Biographies of living people must be impeccably sourced. If there are other articles with unsourced birthdates, those dates should be sourced or removed. Sorry for the ridiculously long-winded reply, but I thought you deserved a detailed explanation. Regards, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 15:43, 24 June 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Cyphoidbomb, I truly appreciate the efforts put by you in explaining details. Let us try to solve this. Interestingly I know Swapneel in person and he has personally confirmed me his date of birth orally and he has no issue in adding on wikipedia. Unfortunately, I could not find any reliable source for the same. Can you please help to find the way out? Coolgama (talk) 15:35, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

It's quick and easy to insert a references list.
Place the cursor where you want to display the references list (usually at the bottom of the page). Open the "Insert" menu and click the "References list" icon (three books).
If you are using several groups of references, which is relatively rare, you will have the opportunity to specify the group. If you do that, then only the references that belong to the specified group will be displayed in this list of references.
Finally, click "Insert" in the dialog to insert the References list. This list will change as you add more footnotes to the page.
You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.
Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has fixed many bugs. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are improving support for Arabic and Indic scripts, and adapting the visual editor to the needs of the Wikivoyages and Wikisources.
Recent changes
The visual editor is now available to all users at most Wikivoyages. It was also enabled for all contributors at the French Wikinews.
The single edit tab feature combines the "Edit" and "Edit source" tabs into a single "Edit" tab. It has been deployed to several Wikipedias, including Hungarian, Polish, English and Japanese Wikipedias, as well as to all Wikivoyages. At these wikis, you can change your settings for this feature in the "Editing" tab of Special:Preferences. The team is now reviewing the feedback and considering ways to improve the design before rolling it out to more people.
Future changes
The "Save page" button will say "Publish page". This will affect both the visual and wikitext editing systems. More information is available on Meta.
The visual editor will be offered to all editors at the remaining "Phase 6" Wikipedias during the next few months. The developers want to know whether typing in your language feels natural in the visual editor. Please post your comments and the language(s) that you tested at the feedback thread on mediawiki.org. This will affect several languages, including: Arabic, Hindi, Thai, Tamil, Marathi, Malayalam, Urdu, Persian, Bengali, Assamese, Aramaic and others.
The team is working with the volunteer developers who power Wikisource to provide the visual editor there, for opt-in testing right now and eventually for all users. (T138966)
The team is working on a modern wikitext editor. It will look like the visual editor, and be able to use the citoid service and other modern tools. This new editing system may become available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices around September 2016. You can read about this project in a general status update on the Wikimedia mailing list.
Let's work together
- Do you teach new editors how to use the visual editor? Did you help set up the Citoid automatic reference feature for your wiki? Have you written or imported TemplateData for your most important citation templates? Would you be willing to help new editors and small communities with the visual editor? Please sign up for the new VisualEditor Community Taskforce.

Dear Friends & Wikipedians, Celebrate the world's biggest sporting festival on Wikipedia. The Rio Olympics Edit-a-thon aims to pay tribute to Indian athletes and sportsperson who represent India at Olympics. Please find more details here. The Athlete who represent their country at Olympics, often fail to attain their due recognition. They bring glory to the nation. Let's write articles on them, as a mark of tribute.
For every 20 articles created collectively, a tree will be planted. Similarly, when an editor completes 20 articles, a book will be awarded to him/her. Check the main page for more details.
