Font specimens
How do you create them?--Kopiersperre (talk) 20:50, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
- Hi! It's quite easy. I tend to do it simply in Microsoft Word. I use the layout of GearedBull as here (I think he has stopped editing Wikipedia mostly), but creating my own templates from coloured text boxes. (These tend to vary a bit from font to font for me unlike for him.) Then export to pdf, crop and conversion to .png. Up till now I have mostly created pictures for individual font articles but I have tried recently to create some for individual designers who have designed enough fonts to make it worth it-so for Lange, Goudy and Novarese among others. Blythwood (talk) 20:59, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks for information. Sadly I'm on Linux and looking for a way to create SVG font specimens. I will try to ask GearedBull.--Kopiersperre (talk) 16:40, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
Joanna at DHS
Per the DHS Seal and Signature Usage Guidelines, the official typeface of DHS is Joanna MT. Also, it's even disputed in reply tweets by two other type designers in the tweet that was linked. --TUFKAAP (talk) 15:12, 7 July 2015 (UTC)
- @TUFKAAP: Good catch! Added that to both pages. No question that the seal itself is Scala Bold though - while they look similar in general Joanna's P and R look quite different. Blythwood (talk) 15:25, 7 July 2015 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of CA Immo
The article CA Immo has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- The coverage (references, external links, etc.) does not seem sufficient to justify this article passing Wikipedia:General notability guideline and the more detailed Wikipedia:Notability (companies) requirement. If you disagree and deprod this, please explain how it meets them on the talk page in the form of "This article meets criteria A and B because..." and ping me back. Thank you,
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. WikiProject assessment tags for talk pages
Thank you for your recent articles, including Immofinanz, which I read with interest. When you create a new article, can you add the WikiProject assessment templates to the talk of that article? See the talk page of the article I mentioned for an example of what I mean. Usually it is very simple, you just add something like {{WikiProject Keyword}} to the article's talk, with keyword replaced by the associated WikiProject (ex. if it's a biography article, you would use WikiProject Biography; if it's a United States article, you would use WikiProject United States, and so on). You do not have to rate the article if you do not want to, others will do it eventually. Those templates are very useful, as they bring the articles to a WikiProject attention, and allow them to start tracking the articles through Wikipedia:Article alerts and other tools. For example, WikiProject Poland relies on such templates to generate listings such as Article Alerts, Popular Pages, Quality and Importance Matrix and the Cleanup Listing. Thanks to them, WikiProject members are more easily able to defend your work from deletion, or simply help try to improve it further. Feel free to ask me any questions if you'd like more information about using those talk page templates. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 09:05, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!
Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Pictures
Hi Thank you for your recent edit to the page Melvin Moss. I'm still trying to learn how to make the articles much better. I've created 40 or so articles about the biographies of many Orthodontists in the past. There are many pictures I know which are available out there but I feel that adding pictures through Wikipedia is a very tedious job. Do you have any recommendations? I'd love to add pictures to each article I've created, as I am a firm follower of Wikipedia Dentistry Project and want to create more articles on Dentistry. Thank you
- @Hgcool23: Hi! Actually I was just reading the article and wanted to help so I googled Dr. Moss and found there was a picture of him already on here. I don't really know anything about dentistry. My recommendation is the main thing you want to do to make really good articles is citation - just make sure you use the 'cite' option at the top of the edit window to give sources a title, source and a refname which means you can use the same source in multiple locations. That and citing Dr. Moss's most notable papers and any textbooks he wrote in the article would be great. But I actually don't write new pages that much - try running drafts past the Teahouse project before you submit them and they can often suggest improvements. Apparently this has been done before - look at the case of Joyce Hatto (New Yorker feature) - but seriously I can't believe the amount of work this must have taken to organise. Hi, I made a change to the Serif article. You added a sentence containing the phrase "thick and strokes", which didn't make sense to me. I changed it to "thick and thin strokes", because that's the closest common thing that would make sense. This is laneos. I take issue with your deleting my recent post without giving specific reasons for the action. The information I gave is accurate.
I am an editor and it is quite inappropriate to censor someone simply because I'm your opinion it "seems" to have issues. What are your reasons? Please explain and if there is in fact something I need to fix I will do so.
Thanks.

Hi Blythwood. Thanks for uploading File:Fira Sans sample image.png! Could you upload an SVG of it as well? --Moyogo/ (talk) 16:34, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
- @Moyogo: Am looking into this! I'm finding it a bit complicated since the SVG packages I'm familiar with don't have great font handling. But will think about it. I've kept all the original files in order to do conversions in future. Blythwood (talk) 23:18, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

Your edit of the photo does not make the picture clearer as it is now very small. On the Italian page it is a panorama but I am unsure how to set that up here. Thanks Roundtheworld (talk) 20:43, 10 January 2016 (UTC)
- @Roundtheworld: - I can't remember what the policy is on this but I know it's preferred not to make a full-size image display on the English wiki as the header image for an article. See Castle Square, Warsaw and Piazza San Marco as examples of this. I think the problem is that setting a specific image size doesn't work for people viewing the article on unusual display sizes. Maybe put in another image (like the one on itwiki) as header and the large one lower down? St. Peter's Square article has a panorama and it's a good example of that - the header image is normal size. Blythwood (talk) 20:59, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

Dear Blythwood,
Thanks for reviewing Clay chemistry. It is indeed just my second new page at Wiki and I agree it could profit from more detail. I hope soon I will be able to contribute more to it, since it is one of my specialty fields... In the meantime, please continue with the good work, and let me know if you have any more feedback! cheers,

Some terms that are frequently used in references are underlined in red in Wikipedia, although they are correctly spelled. I specifically recall the words "casemate" and "redesignated". I've seen erroneous edits made to eliminate these words from articles. How can I submit words for addition to the Wikipedia internal dictionary? RobDuch (talk) 05:26, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
Bertrand Badie
Hello Blythwood, thanks for your message. Regarding notability, a quick check on google scholar with his name gives me 6500 results. I think that, added to 20 book results on barns and nobles (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/s/%22Bertrand%20badie%22?Ns=P_Sales_Rank&Ntk=P_key_Contributor_List&Ntx=mode%20matchall), it justifies by itself the article correct? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rinko87 (talk • contribs) 10:57, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

I declined your CSD tag. Note at WP:CSD: This deletion rationale should only be used rarely. In the vast majority of duplicate articles, the title used is a plausible misspelling or alternate name for the main article, and a redirect should be created instead. This criterion should only be used if its title could be speedy deleted as a redirect. →Σσς. (Sigma) 22:16, 14 January 2016 (UTC) @Σ: - yes forgot that, sorry. Lactopontin
Thank you very much for your attention on Lactopontin. Its great to see people working and caring! I put the stub up at the request of another collaborator who is going to be adding a bunch of content to it soon (hopefully this weekend). Per your specific question, the name is not a trade or company name, but a name that is gaining preferred use in the scientific community for the particular protein secreted in milk, derived from SPP1. The protein is currently universally confused with the systemic protein Osteopontin derived from the same gene, but with a myriad of post-translational structure and physiologic functional differences. I've spoken with some of the researchers at UC Davis and UC Illinois who have agreed to add some of their most recent work that show why this is an important distinction. 17:56, 15 January 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Biotech5771 (talk • contribs)

Thank you for helping fill it out. My practice is to bring anything over to Wikipedia which I find in my travels through old encyclopedias on Wikisource which seems notable and not already there. My article on Scan-A-Line is not promotional. It is an encyclopedic article about how that type of technology works.
Blythwood:
You have flagged my article on Scan-A-Line technology for deletion because you believe it to be promotional. It is not a promotional article, but an explanation of how a fascinating technology works. However, the following article on Kleenex fits your description of a post eligible for speedy deletion because it absolutely promotes a brand: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kleenex.
Somebody doing research on non-contact measurement and guiding technology will find my article most intriguing.
Additionally, you did not state the reason for your action. You said "for several reasons" but failed to mention even one. Your decision appears to be arbitrary. If you have additional questions, please contact me, I am more than willing to answer any questions you may have.

esyN page
Dear Blythwood
I am still in the process of updating the esyN page. To support the fact that esyN is a widely used resource I have mentioned the fact that its been used by large databased like flybase and flymine and Intermine and pombase to display their data (i.e. esyN is embedded in their websites and used to display their data!) These are quite large websites and I believe this should warrant the status of notable or not ? I have added a section called embedded where I have added these details. At the moment esyN is being used by roughy 16700 unique users per month according to google analytics - how do I make a proper reference to this data ? Should I use an image from google analytics ?
Also, I know of other research groups (unrelated to me) currently submitting manuscripts that use esyN - but these articles have not been published yet..

Font samples template
Hello! Recently I found that many of font specimen, like this image, were created by you. I want to do the same job with Cyrillic glyphs, since I participate in Russian Wikipedia and Latin samples are not very useful. The design of these cards is very nice, and I wanted to ask you, does some kind of template exist? Maybe it is possible just to switch the font in it for each sample? And what kind of software do you use for it? — Euref (talk) 01:37, 9 February 2016 (UTC)
- @Euref: - ah, it's horribly simple. Since I want software that I am used to and I can get easily I just use Microsoft Word, assembling together the image from text boxes. Then export to pdf and crop, then export to image. Not a great system, but I'm not a professional graphic designer and it works. I style my images on the great work of GearedBull, who is no longer using Wikipedia; he did his in Quark Xpress I believe. For the Bembo image, I actually took one of his images (of the same font but a worse digitisation of it) and slowly substituted the font samples for mine bit by bit. I'm not sure this is the best way to do it though! Blythwood (talk) 12:25, 11 February 2016 (UTC)

- @Vote4fraser: - sure, but what matters is sources, though you have added some. In addition, parts of the article read as promotional, which isn't right for Wikipedia. I would finish the article and add anything you need to quickly, as you're technically breaking the rules on usernames. Wikipedia usernames aren't allowed to sound promotional or belong to an organisation rather than a specific person, so you may get blocked quite soon automatically and asked to reregister. Blythwood (talk) 05:51, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
- Blythwood I see... in what way is it promotional? Everything added to the article is fact and plays into the campaign he is running on. Vote4fraser (talk) 05:54, 12 February 2016 (UTC)

Hey, I had to decline the speedy for Race Wars story since it's a book series, as book series can't fall under A7. Hello this is Jaron. This organization is a company that has been started by well known members of the beatbox community. They have made a name for themselfs as a company having promoted and trained some well known iconic beatboxers and vocalists. Alot of the artists in the organization are world championship beatboxers and have performed with big names such as Cee Lo Green,Doug E Fresh,Biz Markie and Reggie Watts. Some of them have even been featured on the pbs television show "the electric company". I am not a member of the organization so this is not self promotion.

Hey. Thanks. Most welcome to add references. Initally all I could find was people quoting her as a gothic writer. - @Antiqueight: - no problem! It's just the kind of overarching statement I realised I had to watch out for making myself when writing undergraduate essays! Incidentally, the Perils of the Night book does look quite interesting as a brief commentary on her work, if you hadn't already seen it. Baker also describes her work as modelled on Sophia Lee's The Recess which might be a good topic to go down if you were looking for a way to expand the article... Blythwood (talk) 19:26, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

- You have the advantage of me there - I never had such essays - I am making this all up as I go - v. different from my forte of maths and physics and such like. Honestly, I have no idea how to expand the article other than the basic facts and a little colour where I can find it. But many people seem to have studied her work especially in relation to the development of the gothic novel and the implications of the Act of Union on gothic novels (in Ireland) in general...There was(brain not remembering) also another writer listed as someone who might have influenced her as well, another work that hers could be borrowing from. But how much to say and how much is me writing an essay on a writer I haven't read..I am more than willing to take instruction on the idea.... 🍺 Antiqueight chat 22:15, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

Ellen Heaton
Thanks for adding the extra references. The question of where Ellen's paintings went when she died is an interesting one, I think they are in various places now, and I don't know the answer to how they got there (yet). We ran out of time at the Editathon earlier so Leela0808 and myself will get back to it later, and there are other questions which we should be able to clear up locally - I'll put more on the article's talk page so it's not a one-to-one thing. Life of girls - nomination for speedy deletion
I doubt the article will be kept, but how is Life of girls vandalism? To me it looks like a network show from one of the Slavic countries. However, I may be missing something since it isn't a topic familiar to me, so I wanted to ask you about it. Thanks! 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 14:18, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, that is entirely reasonable, and is closer to my own analysis. It think it is somebody's wishful thinking, but I wouldn't call it vandalism (people get touchy about that), I would nominate for WP:A11 as made up. I just wanting to make sure, for my own education, I wasn't missing something obvious. Thanks for the explanation! All the best, 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 14:49, 7 March 2016 (UTC)

Pepperdine University Libraries
Hi Blythwood,
Thanks for contacting me. I'm a librarian from Pepperdine University Libraries. A group of us will be working on creating a page for the library, and I began the process in hopes of continuing to edit it. Forgive me, I'm still new to creating Wikipedia pages, and I'm not sure if this allowed or not. If this is not a good way to edit, we can create a draft of the page elsewhere before posting it.
Best,

Thanks for creating The Toast article. I'd been meaning to create it myself but hadn't gotten around to it, obviously. It definitely deserves its own page. Cheers! Safehaven86 (talk) 18:48, 11 March 2016 (UTC) |
- @Safehaven86: - Thank you! It's not great, mostly because I decided to whack it together over lunch after seeing Ortberg had one (you can see from the dates the citations were accessed that I just copied half of them over...), but I hope it passes the MVP mark. Checking citations
Thank you for your feedback on the SEAW page. I've added some external links to past exhibitions. The society is also listed on the Suffolk Painters site with a description and some Youtube video demonstrations by a past member who references his membership. I wasn't quite sure where to list these - perhaps at the end? There are a few notable members (by virtue of past careers) who could also be added. Is this sufficient citation for the moment? I can keep on looking if not. I'm a wikipedia newby so any advice would be very welcome.
Thank you. JaneThomas64 (talk) 16:15, 17 March 2016 (UTC)
Review of Claudine K. Brown
Hey thank you for editing this new article! I'm impressed with many of your edits and curious about others. I've got to learn how to group references to avoid duplications, I'm guessing that's the a,b superscript thing, perhaps a ref group? Will check into it. Thank you for the added categories and citations! I'm most curious about why you put in "was an African-American museum director and...". I had actually written that exact phrase, and considered adding "female" in my draft, and looking at other biographical articles as models, decided to strike it in favor of a race- & gender- neutral description of her professional/notability credentials in the summary, and adding these attributes to categories instead. Your thoughts and work are appreciated! noranoodle (talk) 02:30, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
- @noranoodle: - Hi! Yes, I can't remember why I thought that was a good idea. I've cut it, but kept nationality since I felt that's normal to have at the start of an article.
For de-duplicating references, when you fill in citations using the cite web tool, just type in a 'ref name' (the article title, or whatever). Save the page and you can then select it from 'named references' and insert it at the location of the cursor. (Not sure what Visual Editor does as I don't use that - this is for the old editor.) To de-duplicate references a pre-existing page and add titles to references you can run it through Refill, an automated tool, which is what I did at first. It's not quite as good as manually filling in titles but often comes close and certainly saves a lot of time. For categories I use Hotcat, which tries to autocomplete categories - that also saves a lot of time since it tries to autocomplete categories for you so lets you find the right category if you don't know exactly what it's called. Anyway, thanks for writing this. It sounds like she had an interesting career and died quite young too. Blythwood (talk) 12:58, 20 March 2016 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Royal Sovereign shoal
Hello Blythwood. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Royal Sovereign shoal, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Google first, nominate for speedy deletion after that. Thank you. Shirt58 (talk) 03:09, 27 March 2016 (UTC)
- @Shirt58: - if you wanted to improve and keep it, that's fine, but the real issue for me was that this wasn't actually an article on the topic it was titled! It sounded like the write-up of some kind of school project about surveying and using trigonometry. Blythwood (talk) 20:25, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Blythwood! I think we were both right about this. Yes, it was a blob of unformatted... something... and "like the write-up of some kind of school project" when it was started. And speedy deletion tagging was the right thing to do. In my opinion, my job as an admin looking at speedy deletion candidates is to investigate blobs like that and see if there is a plausible article lurking somewhere within them. And in this case, there appeared to be one. No problems from my end if you want to send the article to WP:AFD, or redirect it to the lighthouse, or the place the shoal is located off, or whatever. Discussion on the as yet uncreated talk page would be good, first.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Palatino, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Italic (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Sink condition
Hello,
I'm a pharmacist myself.
"Pharmaceuticals" is a general term for drug forms made by the "pharmaceutical industry".
While "pharmaceutics" is the science and process of preparing pharmaceuticals (tablets, ampules, etc) from chemicals.
Thus, sink condition (pharmaceutics) is a more correct name for the article. Since the entry is related to the manufacturing process (pharmaceutics science), not the products (pharmaceuticals).

Proposed deletion of Maciej Cegłowski
The article Maciej Cegłowski has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- The coverage (references, external links, etc.) does not seem sufficient to justify this article passing Wikipedia:General notability guideline and the more detailed Wikipedia:Notability (biographies) requirement. If you disagree and deprod this, please explain how it meets them on the talk page in the form of "This article meets criteria A and B because..." and ping me back. Thank you,
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
